Abstract:
Aim: Determine the prevalence and incidence of dental caries in children´s deciduous teeth, who were treated with ART technique. Methods: In T1, 62 children were examined for being between 3 and 6 years of age. A questionnaire was applied to the parents or guardians of the children involved in the research, to analyze their knowledge about eating habits and oral hygiene. An intra-oral examination of children from 3 to 6 years old was carried out and dental treatment was performed by the ART technique. Six months after,(T2), the clinical examination was redone to investigate the restorations´stability. Results: In T1, 94 carie cavities were found in 19 children and 86 were recommended for restoration with ART. In T2, 58 restorations were damaged or lost and 15 children had 20 new carie cavities. Conclusion: The prevalence of dental caries in the deciduous dentition was 38.8% and the incidence was 31.9%. In T2, the majority restorations class I and II were damaged or lost. ART technique is an option, despite the high failure in ART, especially for child population with deciduous teeth that has limited access to dental services. However, restorations should be supervised and healthy eating habits implemented.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Objective: To compare the effectiveness of various caries removal techniques in mandibular primary molars using Smart Burs, atraumatic restorative technique (ART) (mechanical caries removal) and Carie-care (chemomechanical caries removal [CMCR]) among primary school children in clinical and community-based settings. Materials and Methods: A total of 80 carious primary mandibular molars were selected for the study from the dental clinic and community. They were equally assigned to four groups according to caries removal technique and also by the operating site. In Group 1, caries was removed using Carie-care in the dental clinic and in Group 2, with Smart Burs in the dental clinic. In Group 3, caries was removed using Carie-care in the field and in Group 4, with the ART in the field. The time taken for caries removal, the efficacy of caries removal and patient acceptance were evaluated with different caries removal techniques. Statistical Analysis: The obtained data were subjected to statistical analysis by ANOVA test. Results: In clinical settings, Carie-care was time-consuming but was more efficient with increased acceptance than Smart Burs and the result was found to be significant statistically (P < 0.05). In community-based settings, Carie-care was more efficient, less time consuming, and showed an increased acceptance when compared to atraumatic restorative treatment and the result was found to be significant statistically (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The CMCR technique was superior to the mechanical caries removal technique in primary teeth among school children in terms of time, efficacy, and acceptance in both clinical- and community-based settings.

Abstract:
What the author calls the “crystal interface” presents an opportunity to historicize and theorize the remarkable fascination with crystals found in contemporary art theory and practice. In aesthetics, science and art production, the crystal materializes intimations of transparency, of vitalistic transformation or of a purist stability. It powerfully articulates a line or gradation between the organic and inorganic. The author's goal is to create a context in which to understand the recourse to the crystal in contemporary art, specifically in the work of Roger Hiorns, David Altmejd and Gerard Caris. As a frame, the author examines Schopenhauer's, Worringer's and Deleuze and Guattari's adoption of the crystal as metaphor and material exemplar.

Abstract:
The origin of enduring stereotypes of Native peoples conjured by Christopher Columbus in the late-fifteenth century, the Kalinago people of today live in Dominica, an island with a unique, complicated history of settlement and resistance. Kalinagos dedicated to raising "cultural consciousness" participate in Dominican museum and heritage projects as well as in international indigenous meetings abroad. This article suggests the concept of "the professionalization of indigeneity" to consider how some Native people are experts at representation itself: producers of representations of their communities both on their communities' behalf and for the public abroad, yet always with attention to state relations at home.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The article is devoted to an artistic and historical study of a marble relief with a symbolic scene of Nero’s victory over Armenia from the Sebasteion sanctuary complex in the ancient town of Aphrodisias in Asia Minor. The temple complex was dedicated to the cult of the Julio-Claudian imperial dynasty. The artistic and stylistic analysis of the relief was performed in the context of the sculptural program and decoration of the whole complex, and took into consideration other images of Nero in the Sebasteion. Through a comparative analysis of the figure personifying Armenia depicted on the marble relief in Aphrodisias, as well as a series of images on coins and small statuary samples, characteristic iconographic traits of Armenia in the Roman imperial art were revealed. Along with this, the paper presents an in-depth ‘reading’ of this scene within the context of specific epi- sodes from the history of the Parthian-Roman conflict and the Roman struggle for Armenia during the period of 54–68 AD.

Abstract:
Studies of the phytochemistry of carob (Ceratonia siliqua) leaf material are extremely limited. This report features the second natural product isolation study of carob leaves and the first such investigation of C. siliqua grown in Australia. Investigation of leaf material from seven carob cultivars using pressurised hot water extraction (PHWE) revealed the presence of high levels of myricitrin, d-pinitol, and sucrose in addition to the previously unreported natural product siliquapyranone {(2R,3R,4S,5R,6R)-5-hydroxy-6-(hydroxymethyl)-2-(((2S,4S)-2-methyl-6-oxotetrahydro-2H-pyran-4-yl)oxy)tetrahydro-2H-pyran-3,4-diyl bis(3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoate)}. Siliquapyranone represents a biosynthetic fusion of conventional 2,3-gallate esters on a β-glucose tannin with a hydroxytetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-one-related non-tannin tetrahydropyran-2-one, parasorboside. Preliminary biological testing indicates that siliquapyranone exhibits weak activity against both tumour and normal cell lines. This suggests that, like most tannins and parasorboside, siliquapyranone may act as an antifeedant.

Abstract:
1024 Background: The combination of platinum agents and PARP inhibitors may benefit patients (pts) with BRCA-associated metastatic breast cancer (MBC). We report on the response and clinical benefit rates when combining the PARP inhibitor veliparib (V) and carboplatin (carb) in a phase I trial. Methods: BRCA carriers with MBC were eligible. Carb starting at an AUC of 6 was given IV in 21-day cycles (C) and V was given orally twice daily (BID) at dose levels (L) L1 through L5. Results: Twenty-eight pts (26 eligible) carrying BRCA1 (12) or BRCA2 (15), or both (1) mutations were accrued between June 2010 and June 2012. The median age (32-66) was 45 years. The number (#) of prior chemotherapy regimens given for MBC was 1 (0-5); 70% of BCs were ER+, and 7% were HER2+. The schema, dose limiting toxicities (DLT) during C 1, median # of Cs on trial, and maximum tolerated dose (MTD) are shown. There were 3 (12%) complete and 9 (35%) partial responses (PR). Unconfirmed PR or stable MBC (median duration: 8 months [6-10+]) were seen in 7 pts (27%); the clinical benefit rate was74%. The median progression-free survival (PFS) is 7.8 months (95% CI 7.3-9.5). The pt with Fallopian tube cancer had a CR. DLTs with C 1 were seen in 2/6 evaluable pts at L1 (1 pt w/grade 3 hyponatremia and dehydration, and 1pt w/grade 4 thrombocytopenia [PLT]), leading to de-escalation of carb. At L2, 1 pt had grade 4 PLT. At L5, 1 pt had grade 4 PLT, and 2 pts grade 3 PLT (1 pt also experienced grade 4 granulocytopenia [ANC]), defining the MTD at carb AUC 5 and V 150 mg BID (L4). Dose delays and/or dose adjustments due to grade ≥ 2 toxicities for ANC or PLT were seen during the first 3 Cs at L1 (100%), L2 (50 %), L3 (67%), L4 (83 %), and at L5 (67%). Conclusions: The combination of carb and V is active, and is associated with substantial clinical benefit rate and managable hematologic toxicities in BRCA carriers with MBC. Further definition of the role of V is warranted. [Table: see text]

Abstract:

Palavra chaves: Caribe, descolonização epistêmica, Grupo Novo Mundo, Pensamento CríticoInsular Caribbean: Between reality and epistemological subversionAbstractThe reality of the Caribbean – it’s true, it’s ontology -, because of the complex historical process and it's “being”, generated forms, seizure modes and concepts that are far from those established by Western thought. Throughout the twentieth century, notions such as blackness, “choteo”, creolization, imperial border, wretched of the Earth, Antillean speech, “antilhanidade”, poetic of relationships, acculturation and metaphoric concepts as “Caliban”, has been formulated and became constitutive of a theoretical e philosophical expression of Caribbean existence. A notable case discussed in this article is the emergence of the New World Group, that, against the creation of new Nation-states after the independence from the English Empire, shows it’s dissatisfaction with the current metropolitan knowledge and theoretical approaches. Afterwards, considering that they should ‘think to act’, they proposed the development of an ‘independent thinking’ and the articulation of notions such as ‘epistemic decolonization’, ‘epistemic sovereignty’, ‘Caribbean epistemology’ or the study of Caribbean as a plantation system. The epistemic subversion of the English-speaking Caribbean happened through active intellectuals, those with practical purpose and commitment to their world, thought to make a difference. Keywords: Caribbean, epistemic decolonization, New World Group, Critical Thinking

L5 is currently being expanded to 6 pts (3 currently enrolled, 1 pt with grade 4 granulocytopenia (Gr) and grade PLT reached DLT). Non-DLT dose delays mostly due ≥ grade 2 Gr or PLT were needed at 60%, 53%, 53%, and 43% of Cs in pts treated on Ls 1-4. Response: In 12 eligible pts treated at Ls 1 and 2, 2 complete and 6 partial responders (67%) and a clinical benefit (CB) of 75% were seen. All pts at Ls 3-5 are still being treated, and in pts treated at Ls 3 and 4, 2 unconfirmed PRs, and 4 cases of stable disease were seen, with L5 too early to assess. Conclusions: The combination of Carb at an AUC of 5 and daily V at doses 150 to 200 mg BID is feasible and the MTD is being defined. In preliminary analysis, response and CB rates are better than expected with the individual agents alone, providing justification to proceed with a planned phase II randomized single agent versus combination trial. Abstract:
Background. Acute variceal bleeding is a major cause of death in liver cirrhosis. This large scale retrospective cohort study aims to analyze the prognosis of patients with cirrhosis and acute variceal bleeding and to validate the current prognostic models. Methods. Patients with cirrhosis and acute variceal bleeding were enrolled from Jan 2019 to March 2020. The independent prognostic factors for in-hospital death were identified by logistic regression analyses. Area under curves (AUCs) was compared among Child-Pugh, cirrhosis acute gastrointestinal bleeding (CAGIB) score, and model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) scores. Results. Overall, 379 patients with liver cirrhosis and acute variceal bleeding were consecutively evaluated. The majority of the patients were males (59.1%) and the mean age of all patients were 53.7±1.3 years (range 14-89). Hepatitis B virus (HBV) was the most common underlying cause of liver cirrhosis (54.1%). 72 (19%) patients had hepatocellular carcinoma. Multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that age, HCC, WBC, total serum bilirubin, serum creatinine, and ALT were independently associated with in-hospital death. And the odds ratios (ORs) for in-hospital death were 1.066 (95% CI 1.017-1.118, P=0.008), 7.19 (95% CI 2.077-24.893, P=0.001), 1.123 (95% CI 1.051-1.201, P=0.001), 1.014 (95% CI 1.005-1.023, P=0.003), 1.012 (95% CI 1.004-1.021, P=0.006), and 1.005 (95% CI 1.000-1.009, P=0.036), respectively. In the whole cohort with HCC patients, the AUCs of Child-Pugh, CAGIB, MELD and NLR scores were 0.842 (95% CI 0.801-0.878), 0.840 (95% CI 0.799-0.876), 0.798 (95% CI 0.754-0.838), and 0.688 (95% CI 0.639-0.735), respectively. The differences were statistically significant between Child-Pugh and NLR scores (P=0.0118), and between CAGIB and NLR scores (P=0.0354). Conclusion. Child-Pugh and CAGIB scores showed better predictive performance for prognosis of patients with cirrhosis and acute variceal bleeding than NLR scores.

Abstract:
Abstract The hydrographic network of volcanoes has an impact as much on the constructive as on the destructive processes. This study is potentially rich in information. Volcanic hydro-geomorphology studies volcanic hydrographical system from a naturalist and multiscale approach. On volcanoes, the analysis of processes that are produced in volcanic streams, during eruptions or rest periods, shows that the hydro-volcano-geomorphologic (HVG) hazards are numerous and cannot be reduced to simple flooding. All of the different HVG destructive phenomena act to evacuate the excess of volcanic material. The morphological impact is more definite than the ‘standard’ water floods. As a result, the threat of volcanic streams is significant because it is frequent, spontaneous and cannot always be predicted. Which bring us to the following question: are volcanic streams more dangerous than eruptions? If the HVG risks have been neglected by the society in favor of the crater phenomena, it has not always been so in the Lesser Antilles. The vocabulary of the native Caribbean (Kalinago) that has reached us through the Carib-French dictionary of Father Breton (1665) is rich in information. It allows us to identify several gradients in the hydro-geomorphologic factors: meteorological crisis, stability of land and torrential phenomena intensity. The Kalinago’s vocabulary contains other words from different domains in geosciences, but none which refer to volcanic eruptions. This amerindian society probably perceived volcanoes on another time scale than ours: a temporal scale adapted to the impact of hazards, their danger.

Abstract:
Rouget analyzes the recordings of two pieces for vòdún initiation ceremonies for the deities of Xɛvyòsò (thunder and lightning) and Sakpàtá (the Earth), which he recorded near Porto Novo, Benin (formerly Dahomey), in 1958 and 1969, respectively. These pieces are performed in great secrecy and differ significantly in form and style from the drumming, dancing, and singing performed for the public “coming-out” ceremonies at the end of the initiates’ period of seclusion. Using staff and sonogram transcriptions, Rouget focuses on melodic and strophic repetition, as well as the function of chromaticism, a rarity in African music. These pieces reflect how the initiates move from a state of “dispossession,” or self-alienation, which the author chronicles in his photographs, before they are symbolically reborn in the public portion of the ceremony. Rouget argues for the pieces’ status as sacred works of art, originating from before colonization, that are worthy of aesthetic appreciation. Citation: Rouget, Gilbert. This paper includes some determinations of archaeological, art and palaeobotanical samples from Spain and Portugal, obtained at the University of Granada Radiocarbon Dating Laboratory, mostly from 1986 to 1988. Pretreatment of charcoal and wood samples is a standard acid-basic procedure using 8% HC1 and 2% NaOH at boiling temperature. The collagen of bone samples is obtained by the Longin (1971) method. The method of dating is benzene synthesis and liquid scintillation counting as previously reported (González-Gómez, López-González & Domingo-García 1982; González-Gómez, Sánchez-Sánchez and Domingo-García 1985; González-Gómez, Sánchez-Sánchez and Villafranca-Sánchez 1986, 1987).14C activity was measured in a Packard Tri-Carb Mod 4640 liquid scintillation spectrometer, using 20 ml low 40K counting vials with 5 ml benzene and 10 ml PPO-toluene as scintillator with a background of ca. 9 cpm. Efficiency was approximately 70% using the part of spectrum above the end point of tritium.

Abstract:

Abstract:

It is common knowledge that the West Indies were inhabited by three cultures at the time of European contact—the Island Caribs, the Tainos and the Ciboney – identified largely from the accounts of Spanish and French explorers and chroniclers. Is this knowledge accurate? This evaluation of evidence for the Guanahatabey (‘Ciboney’) of western Cuba and southwestern Haiti finds they did not survive until the time of European contact.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Aim: The aim of the study included the effect of aqueous extract (AE) and ethyl acetate extract (EAE) on blood sugar in diabetic rats and their effects on liver enzymes and lipid panel in control and diabetic rats. Furthermore, the antioxidant activity of the EAE was studied in vitro and compared with AE. Materials and Methods: Sugar and antioxidant content of AE and EAE were determined. In vitro antioxidant activity of AE and EAE was estimated by 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and ABTS*+ radical scavenging assay, ferric-reducing antioxidant power assay, and total antioxidant assay. To study the effect of the extracts on blood glucose level (BGL), lipid profile, and liver function in non-diabetic and diabetic rats, five groups of six rats each were treated with distilled water, AE, EAE, glibenclamide (GLB), and sucrose for 8 days. Plasma glucose level (PGL), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), transaminases (alanine transaminase [ALT] and aspartate transaminase [AST]), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were determined. The effect of the interventions on BGL after acute administration also was investigated. Diabetes was induced by streptozotocin injection. Results: EAE contains significantly lower content of fructose and glucose than AE (p<0.05), and it has no sucrose. AE and EAE exhibited a significant antioxidant activity and high antioxidant content; the antioxidant content was higher in AE than EAE (p<0.05). In diabetic rats, acute treatment by AE increased PGL, while EAE significantly lowered BGL as compared to the untreated diabetic rats. Both interventions significantly decreased BGL as compared to the sucrose treated group in diabetic rats (p<0.05). EAE was more potent than GLB. Sucrose caused 13% increment in BGL after 8 days of induction of diabetes, while AE caused only 1.3% increment. Daily treatment by EAE decreased significantly AST, ALT, ALP, and TC. EAE decreased significantly TC and TG level in diabetic rats in comparison to the untreated diabetic group. Conclusion: The study showed for the 1st time that EAE has more hypoglycemic effect than AE, and both extracts prevent the increment in BGL on day 8 after induction of diabetes observed in the control and sucrose treated group. EAE significantly ameliorated the lipid and liver function disorders induced by diabetes.
