Abstract:
Secondary tropical forests are increasingly recognized for their role conserving biodiversity in agricultural landscapes and this role is especially important for seasonally dry tropical forests (SDTF), one of the most threatened tropical forested ecosystems. The conservation value of secondary forest is increased by its capacity to maintain ecosystem properties and provide services to humans; which has been hypothesized to have positive links to the species and functional diversity of ecosystems. However very little information is available on the occurrence of this relationship in secondary

This dissertation explores the struggles over identity and place in a small Afro-Caribbean village on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. Cahuita, founded by Afro-Caribbean migrants in the early twentieth century, and until decades ago a village of farmers and fishermen virtually ignored by the national government, is now one of the Caribbean coast's main tourist attractions. Already engaged in battles against the perceived discrimination of the government, the turn to tourism provided Cahuitans with reason and ammunition for their continuing lucha ("fight"). The purpose of this thesis is to gain insight into the problem of economic development in general and of Latin America in particular. Its main inquiry is to attempt an explanation of the process of regional economic development based on historical fact. That is, how does one reconcile economic stagnation with the presence of a high wage economy. A chronological sequence of primary and secondary quotes tailors the theme, as major evidence for our argument. We do not wish to centre it on the wage variable. This dissertation explores the growing field of study around Maritime Security. While an increasingly common sub-heading in American naval strategy documents, maritime security operations are largely framed around individual threats (i.e. counter-piracy, counter-terrorism, counter-narcotics). Here, we endeavor to explore how a seemingly disparate set of transnational issues fit into a more coherent framework to give greater theoretical substance to the notion of Maritime Security as a distinct concept. In particular, we examine, as our research question, whether the Broken Windows theory, a cr

Roads, bridges, buildings, and land have all been sites of violence, illustrating the blurred lines between military and civilian space. The meanings of these locations change after war.
