ABSTRACT Critiques leveled at epistemic decolonization call for a reorientation in theories of colonialism. The colonial imagination, a rhetorical tool that normalizes a sensible order of dispossession and appropriation, can be a reoriented site of contestation. By imagining an identity whose only means of relating is through opposition, the colonial imagination renders identities that inhabit a state of solitude. Two letters from Hernán Cortés to King Carlos V of Spain show how this colonial imagining aims to normalize dispossession and appropriation of the relations Originary peoples have wi

The Braganza (Bragança) diamond – also known as the Great Diamond of Portugal – is considered a mystery, although it seems more accurate saying that it’s a secret. In a strategy here called ludibrium, or a kind of dissimulation game, it appears that since the first news – concerning its discovery in Brazil around 1741 and delivery to King João V of Portugal in the following year – the stone was successively mentioned as being a white sapphire, then a white topaz and more recently an aquamarine, when in fact it was a dark yellow diamond with an oblong shape and about 1680 carats in weight wit

Less than two years after the United States occupied New Mexico, Acoma Pueblo accused its neighbors in Laguna Pueblo of misappropriating a painting of Saint Joseph. The Indians of Acoma claimed that they had loaned the picture to the pueblo of Laguna for the purpose of celebrating Holy Week, but Laguna had subsequently refused to return it. The large oil painting on canvas, which portrayed the standing figure of Joseph holding the baby Jesus, was said to have been sent to New Mexico by Carlos II, king of Spain from 1665 to 1700. Both pueblos claimed rightful ownership of the picture, both said

This contribution focuses on the analysis of the iconography of the kings represented with the spear. An iconography of the sovereign seen as a warrior, wielding a weapon which, from the archaic Greek age, passing through the early Middle Ages and the Renaissance age, becomes emblematic in the depiction of monarchs. The spear, moreover, is the weapon used by the archetype of the universal sovereign par excellence, that is Alexander the Great. In this brief examination, comparatively, we will consider how, from the late imperial age up to Titian's famous portrait of Charles V on horseback,

A partir de ese momento la retórica simbólica invadió como nunca el espacio urbano, y la imagen del monarca alcanzó en las celebraciones públicas una dimensión desmesurada. As the daughter of a well-known Sevillian sculptor, Roldán developed her skills in a busy workshop that produced life-sized polychrome wood sculptures. But when the artist arrived in Madrid with her family in late 1688, she found an uncertain economic environment and a very different market, with reduced demand for the sculpture with which she was familiar. Similar concepts flood management structures such as Delta-dikes, un-breachable dikes or super-levees can also be found in literature. Yet all of them have two key design requirements in common. The first one is to improve their reliability given the uncertainty in future projections of water level change. The second one is the optimization of their dimensions in order to make them safe enough. In the case of the Netherlands, the failure mechanism of piping is one of the main con

Abstract The development of an accurate and user friendly computer model for the prediction of tubing life in gas condensate wells has led to its use as a tool for engineering applications. The USL Corrosion Model Phase V-version 2 provides the user with an accurate physical description of the flowing conditions inside a gas well in addition to the predicted tubing life. This information can be used to assist in determining the mechanism which is responsible for the predicted corrosion rate. With this kind of information, the engineer can then run “what if” scenarios to estimate the effect var

This technology allows for safe, fast, and accurate inspection whereby the results are presented comprehensively. This will be illustrated with results from a recent project. Abstract Objectives/Scope: Oil and gas operators use a variety of reservoir engineering workflows in addition to the reservoir, production, and surface facility simulation tools to quantify reserves and complete field development planning activities. Reservoir fluid property data and models are fundamental input to all these workflows. Thus, it is important to understand the propagation of uncertainty in these various workflows arising from laboratory fluid property measured data and corresponding model uncertainty.
