Full textKnown to most as Dracula, the vampire is revealing and resilient monster whose diegetic existence predates Stoker's novel, and that has become a key figure of popular culture. From folklore to fiction and from shadow to ligjhte, its evolution is indicative of the times and societies in wich it return to life. Equally transgressive and normative, its avatars play a cathartic role aas they epitomize rejection of human, natural and divine laws, but also the reiteration of the rules and the creation of literary canons. This diachronic study focused on "Carmilla" (1872), "Dracula" (1897) and Anne Rice's vampires shows that their adventures induce reflection on both the consequences of wrongdoing and the validity of norms, on the essence of human nature and hubris, and the liberating fucntion of fictional characters, particulary monsters

The aim of this study was to make a comparative analysis focusing on the female literary representations present in two English novels. Through the study of the novels Carmilla (1872), by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, and Sabella (1980), by Tanith Lee, we examined the main common characteristics from female characters and their attitudes within the society to which they belong, and with the purpose of finding some possible points leading to a literary female identity construction. From a deep contact with the title-characters Carmilla and Sabella – both female vampires and also representatives of distinct English literary fiction periods – we depict the social-historical contexts to which each author belongs. The analysis is based on some feminist theories developed and propagated along of the 70’s and the 80’s, which discuss the new places occupied by women in social contexts so far known as “banned”, like out-of-house works, politics and sexuality. We also interact with texts related to social female representations linked to the mythological vampire figure – a kind of representation directly associated to some emotional transformations dealing with the primitive opposition between good vs. evil.

_________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
Nb2O5 has been characterized by SEM, surface area, FTRaman and FTIR. Protonation and deprotonation of catalyst surface caused by changes in pH values were followed by surface charge density and calorimetric studies of this catalyst. The Nb2O5 was applied in the photodegradation of indigo carmine dye, its ability was compared with catalysts TiO2 and ZnO. Nb2O5 presented a degradation lower than other oxides, however, it can be easy recovered and recycled. The activity of Nb2O5 increased with ionic strength up to 0.05 mol/L salt concentration and above this value, photocatalytic activity started to decrease. Nb2O5 showed high activity in acid medium (pH < 4.94), due to this protonated region favors dye interaction. The catalyst was recycled and reused more 9 times and maintained its photocatalytic activity showing 80% of indigo carmine degradation.

Full textThe dissertation offers an analysis of the relationship between Catullus' long poems and Apollonius Rhodius' Argonautica. The analysis, which is mainly concerned whith poem 64, is based on a methodical collation. The study is divided into ten chapters, an introduction, and a conclusion. In the introduction the adopted methodology is explained, and some theoretical questions regarding intertextuality are discussed. Chapter One deals with an outline of modern scholarship pertinent to the last hundred and fifty years. This outline points out that Apollonius tends to be more and more important in the scholarship on poem 64. From Chapter Two to Chapter Nine poem 64 is examined in detail. Special stress is laid on the similarities between Catullus and Apollonius pertaining to content, structure, and style. Chapter Ten concerns poems 61-63 and 65-68. As these seven poems are generally quite different from the Argonautica, only the similarities which are significant are examined. The last section draws the conclusions. On the whole, the study shows that the similarities between Catullus and Apollonius are rather unimportant, since they usually aren't deep or concern topoi. Although for historical reasons it seems probable that Apollonius influenced Catullus, there is in fact no evidence that Catullus' poems were directly influenced by Apollonius' Argonautica. Therefore, it is suggested that interpretations of Catullus 64 based on Apollonius' Argonautica should be avoided. This view stands in contrast to the views of those contemporary scholars who establish an intertextual relationship between poem 64 and the Argonautica.

Grove, Chantal. Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/52460.
Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: In his Odes, Horace pays particular attention not only to the subject in hand, but also to the reader as his audience, or the addressee, who is usually mentioned at the beginning of the poem. As this kind of communication draws the poet into his own creation, it is useful to refer to him in that context, as the speaker. It is evident from the manner of communication with the addressee that Horace conveys the message of each poem not solely by means of statements, but by implying certain facts, through this interaction between speaker and addressee. The specific addressee for each ode - to whom the speaker's attitude is a reaction - is therefore chosen with great care, in order to underline a specific subject or support a point of view. Just as each ode is different, and contains a variety of differing emotions, Horace's speakers display a myriad of different attitudes. His deeper sentiments do however remain constant. This brings one to the realisation that Horace applies a number of "roles", in order to obtain the desired effect in each poem. Eventually the interaction is not between the speaker and the addressee, but between the poet and the reader. Some of the poems do not give the names of addressees, only the roles Horace plays as the speaker. These roles are termed personae, and represent the poet on a number of realistic and super-realistic planes. In this study, a selection of personae was analysed and the effects examined, in order to establish in what way the persona might influence the interpretation of the poem. Initially a collective overview of several personae was planned, for the purpose of a synthesis of those personae, possibly leading to the discovery of a central Horatian persona. It was however, found, in the complex perfection of his work, that that central person is Horace: the poet.

Full textThe main objective of the thesis was that to provide a review of the critical edition, with a translation and a commentary of the scholia pseudacroniana on The Fourth Book of the Odes of Horace. In the vast field of the Horatian lyric, it's been considered un 'independent' section. The pseudacronian corpus looks like a jumble of Horace's scholia not due to an individuality or to a precise historic moment: they are the result of a stratification began in the fifth century and lasted until the Middle Ages, mistakenly attributed to Elenius Acron, author of the second century AD. Some critical interventions have been proposed to the edition of reference, that of O. Keller, published for the series Teubneriana (Pseudacronis Scholia in Horatium vetustiora, Leipzig 1902).During the draft of the commentary I've given great importance to the evaluation of the literary investigations proposed in the pseudacronian text. It's not even a careful focus on the types of notes, too, from which we deduce the linguistic, rhetorical, literary, mythical, historical competences. The work has been completed by an essay divided by sections: the first part concerning the receipt of the text of auctores, and in particular Horace, in the context of the school. The second section concerns the characteristics of the commentary on the fourth book of Odes, taken as an example for the evaluation of ps.Acron's exegetical technique

Full textOne of the constant themes of the tradition of the CLE (Carmina Latina Epigraphica) is represented by the ideal relationship which exists between the Tumulus/dead and traveller/alive. In the words of whoever is speaking, the tomb is presented as a new abode which is by nature eternal. Yet, fundamentally, the body resides in this dwelling while the soul or spirit transmigrates. .

After his famous Commentarii linguae latinae, he published a collection of epigrams entitled Carmina in 1538, which are event poems about various subjects. Follower of a minor genre and of a flexible metric, Dolet does not forget, as a civic humanist, to give to his pen a political, avenging or moralizing mission. Ciceronianist, he reveals free in the field of the imitation and in his treatment of the epigram, which oscillates between tradition and innovation. His poems, as well as two later collections, Genethliacum Claudii Doleti (1539) and Francisci Valesii Gallorum Regis Fata (1539), reflect the attraction of their author for various philosophic spheres of influence but especially seem to testify of the influence of the free thinker Pomponazzi

Full textThese researches participate in a wide reflection led at present on the demographic behavior of the population of Rome. Recent works defined a specific demographic model of the antique megalopolis, where an insufficient birthrate and a strong mortality rate would have prevented the renewal of the generations. The population of Rome would have held steady thanks to an immigration coming from Italy and from the provinces. This doctorate joins in the field of the social history of the population of Rome. It analyzes the family behavior in the lower classes, and the place of the child in the family. It bases itself on a study of funerary verse inscriptions (carmina Latina epigraphica), dating back to the end of the Republic and the Empire. It so presents a corpus of epitaphs dedicated to children (with an age mentioned), as well as a study of this catalog. This study analyzes the nature and the role of the carmen in commemoratives practices. It specifies the identity of the deceased and the social origin of families ; then it evokes the structure of these families by listing all the persons mentioned in the epitaphs. It reveals complex structures of family, where there are many illegitimate children, because of the current or past slavish status of certain relatives. It approaches finally the question of the place of the child in the family, by examining the modes of expression of sorrow, according to the various literary motives and chosen speakers. This research allows to know better the status of the child within the modest families and the attitude of these families in front of birth and of death

In this paper we analyze the profound changes taking place in the twelfth century Medieval West and were noted by Haskins as a distinct form of Renaissance. And these are represented within the set of satirical texts, Carmina Burana. For this mobilizarei an effort, at first, to understand the formulation of the concept of Cultural Renaissance, which is established in their proper contours by Jakob Burckhardt and is used by Haskins to think an era of breakups and social fluidity, which were atypical to a company linked to stability that an agrarian culture, as we showed Ernst Gellner, possessed. This discussion of historiographical character is important to realize the time to formulate a well-defined concept and fully explanatory and otherwise present an instability that does not diminish the formulations of 70 years of history, but to understand another way of real-last explanation does not act via the conceptual, but another via formation of language, that is, the metaphor. Within these understandings intend to take, by a hybrid way, an effort to demonstrate the formativeness these verses, their surroundings and how they, in some way, realize a real experience and thus demonstrate my main hypothesis have the laughable texts of Carmina Burana a metaphoric way of building knowledge about the past.

Full textOptatianus Porfyrius transcended the Alexandrian figurated poem (technopaegnia). His square-like poems display internal pictures drawn by clever versus intexti : geometrical patterns, dedications, emblems. This poetry combines influences from epigraphy (characters placement, acrostiches), ornamental arts (mosaic patterns) and mathematics (combinatorics of reading paths and word permutations). To describe his art the poet uses the vocabulary of weaving. His works illustrate graphically this idea of the text as an intertwining. The weaving metaphor reminds of the embroidery: the text/fabric becomes the equivalent of the toga picta of the conqueror. Composed in the period 320-326, Optatianus' Carmina follow emperor Constantine steps toward a monarchic, dynastic and Christian rule. A parallel study of contemporary coins shows how Optatianus carefully exploits the evolution of the imperial propaganda. His praise give evidence of the Christianization of the executive power, precisely when it keeps connections with the cult of sol. Optatianus also emphasizes the theme of the light, with the purpose to celebrate the constantinian gloria. Optatianus poetry bears traits of the esthetics of the roman 4th century a. D. : a taste for abstraction, symbols and clichés. The vows associated to the renewal of the emperor's charisma give to the Carmina a liturgic value in harmony with the spirit of the main imperial celebrations

Full textGiovanni Pascoli (1855-1912) is a classic of Italian literature. A bilingual poet writing in Italian and Latin. He has distinguished himself in the field of Neo-Latin literature by composing poems awarded in the certamen poeticum hoeufftianum. His Latin work, the Carminas, is almost unknown in France. The first objective of this doctoral research is to propose a bilingual edition, translated and commented, of a selection of Pascoli's Latin poems, accessible to a French audience not specialised in Latin or Italian literature. We have tried to select poems of various forms (narrative poems, epigrams, dedications odes) in order to give the reader an idea of what a complete edition of the Carmina could be like. In the introduction, we presented the biographical elements and the various aesthetic and linguistic aspects of Pascolian poetry that could facilitate the understanding of the texts. We also offer an analysis of the practice consisting in writing in Latin as a poetic experiment, and tried to situated this practice in relation to his contemporaries. We also tried as much as possible to study Pascoli's Latin poetry in relation to his Italian poetry. The second aspect of this thesis concerns the posthumous nature of this work, edited by the poet's sister, Maria Pascoli, with the help of philologist Ermenegildo Pistelli. Since the poet did not have time to propose a structure of his work in a collection, the Latin poems are organized according to thematic sections that are not always satisfactory (for example, the epigrams are published without organizational logic in a section containing all the short poems or the poems that could not be classified in the thematic sections). The digitization of all of G. Pascoli's drafts enabled us to explore the drafts of the author's plans, and we propose two possible collections in the introduction to this thesis: the first organized according to the chronology of the writing, the second organized according to the chronology of the facts represented. Our commented edition of the Carmina is presented according to the first organization, in order to offer an overview of Pascoli's writing as a process that has evolved over time. This study of the Pascholian writing process was also carried out at the poem level, in the detail of the composition. We made an XML-TEI genetic edition of a draft folder, that of the poem Crepereia Tryphaena. In this edition, we have described with great precision the writing gestures visible on the page (add, delete, substitute, move, rewrite a new version) and we have tried, when possible, to analyze the mental operations that caused these gestures. We have also tried to reconstruct the chronology of the writing of each draft, in order to create an editing prototype that allows us to read the drafts of poetry by displaying the text one writing campaign after the other and to visualize the modifications made by the author up to the scale of the letter. Thanks to this edition, we were able to analyse in detail the composition steps, the methods used by the author and the gestures made to carry out his project, and we deliver the results of this analysis at the end of the introduction of this thesis

Full textThis thesis deals with the renaissance of the Latin elegy in the humanist era, at the beginning of the 15th century, in Siena, when Giovanni Marrasio composed the first collection of elegies in Renaissance Latin, Angelinetum, with love as its inspiration, in addition to numerous diverse poems, his carmina varia. This style of expression had not been in use for several centuries prior to this. The exclusive use of the elegiac distich lends unity to the wide range of themes and subjects in the poet's work. This leads one to ponder the conception of the Latin elegy as illustrated by Marrasio : if he reappropriates many themes and topics characteristic of ancient elegies, he integrates several literary legacies from various earlier periods in his poetry. All these borrowings are skillfully combined into original poetry by means of clever purposeful imitation. The methods of this imitation are analysed in full: literary influence is thus expressed by allusion, quotation and translation. The analysis of Marrasian imitation also allows the poet's new contributions to the elegiac genre to be evaluated, in particular his use of Petrarchist themes and combination of the elegy and the epigram. As a man of letters, Marrasio took part, in certain literary debates of his time, on topics such as inspiration or the value of poetry, which find novel expression in his poems, identifiable thanks to a metapoetic writing style. Marrasio turns out to be both an imitator and an innovator in the renaissance of the elegiac genre

Full textCoal fly ash, a waste generated in coal-fired electric power plant, was used to synthesize zeolite by hydrothermal treatment with NaOH solution. The fly ash (CL-2) and this synthesized zeolite (ZM-2) that was characterized as hydroxy-sodalite were used as adsorbents for anionic dyes indigo carmine (IC), and reactive orange 16 (RO16) from aqueous solutions. Effects of contact time, initial dye concentration, pH, adsorbent mass, and temperature were evaluated in the adsorption processes. The kinetics studies indicated that the adsorption followed the pseudo-second order kinetics and that surface adsorption and intraparticle diffusion were involved in the adsorption mechanism. The thermodynamics parameters demonstrated that the adsorption was spontaneous for all adsorption processes. The enthalpy data confirmed the endothermic nature for all adsorption processes except for IC/ZM-2 system which was exothermic. The entropy data showed an increased disorder at the solid/solution interface during the adsorption for all systems except for IC/ZM-2 whose negative entropy value indicated a decreased disorder at the interface. The adsorption isotherms were closely fitted to the Langmuir linear equation. The maximum adsorption capacities were 1.48 mg/g for the IC/CL-2 system; 1.13 mg/g for IC/ZM-2; 0.96 mg/g for RO16/CL-2, and 1.14 mg/g for RO16/ZM-2 at room temperature. The desorption study carried out with water, with acid aqueous solutions, and with an alkali aqueous solution showed to be inefficient both for recovering the dyes and regenerating the adsorbents.

Full textThis paper discusses the musical aspects related to the construction of Julius Heckethorn's clock, based on the Sonata K 462 by Scarlatti, narrated in detail in the subject P, of the novel Avalovara, by Osman Lins. The goal is to establish relationships between the musical aspects and the structural elements of the novel, unveiling some of its rules. The musical references present in the novel are relevant and numerous. Besides the rich narrative sound scenes, like the beating of waves on the beach, the sound of wind, the sound of horses' hoofs and the chirping of birds, there are depictions of folk and classical musical events such as the Pastoril, in Recife, the cantata Carmina Catulli by Carl Orff, and the psalm In Convertendo Dominus, by André Campra. The reflections are referenced to the theoretical perspective of Matila Ghyka (1968) to relate the structural elements of the work with the construction of Julius Heckethorn's clock, and are referenced musically to the information contained in Grout and Palisca (2007).

This thesis will be focus on the male and female vampires in both Dracula and “Carmilla” in order to explore their different faces and metamorphoses. After that, I hope to infer the reason why vampire stories always attract people. This thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter deals with Tzvetan Todorov’s theory on the fantastic. And as Todorov says, the fantastic gives us a chance to read something which is forbidden to talk about, such as incest and homosexuality. Readers can enjoy the delights of aberration when reading the fantastic without really breaking the moral standards and the rules. In the fantastic stories, vampires appear as the incarnations of different taboos. Since there are many different taboos in the society, vampires metamorphose into different forms. In this chapter, folkloric vampires are also mentioned. From the folkloric vampires, we know that vampires’ images and traits differ from countries to countries and cultures to cultures. Chapter Two deals with all the male and female vampires in Dracula and “Carmilla”. In this chapter, male and female vampires will be explored using Carol A. Senf’s idea of the three characteristics associated with vampires. From this chapter we know further that vampires change their images according to people’s and society’s needs. In Chapter Three, the focus is on the two protagonists, Dracula and Carmilla, in the two vampire fictions. There will be three main points in this part. The first one is about the historic Dracula and Carmilla. In the second point, heterosexuality and homosexuality will be discussed. At last, another vampire fiction, Fred Saberhagen’s The Dracula Tape, will be used to discuss vampire’s voice. From this novel, we know that vampires in the twentieth century are very different from those in the previous centuries. They speak for themselves. They transform from terrible monsters to attractive characters. From these three chapters, we know that the reason why vampires always can attract people is because of their fluid nature. They don’t have a stable image. They metamorphose into different images according to different culture, society, and epoch in order to answer to people’s and society’s fears or needs.
