Esta entrevista faz parte do Dossiê “40 anos de ‘Uma voz diferente’: contribuições, desdobramentos e o legado das ideias de Carol Gilligan (1936-)” da Revista Schème – Revista Eletrônica de Psicologia e Epistemologia Genéticas. Gilligan tornou-se referência mundial para a Psicologia do Desenvolvimento Moral, para os Estudos Feministas e os Estudos de Gênero na década de 1980, depois de publicar, em 1982, o livro Uma voz diferente. No dizer da Harvard University Press, “este é o pequeno livro que começou uma revolução”. Com o passar dos anos, o trabalho inicial de Gilligan também foi ganhando notoriedade e sendo reconhecido por outras áreas do conhecimento, a princípio na Filosofia e no Direito, para depois na Educação, Enfermagem e outras, assim como em vários campos da própria Psicologia. Hoje aos 84 anos, Gilligan é atualmente professora da Universidade de Nova Iorque (2002-atualmente), sendo professora aposentada da Universidade de Harvard (1969-1997), onde conseguiu seu Ph.D. em Psicologia Social em 1964, e lecionado anteriormente na Universidade de Chicago (1965-1966) até ter sido contratada em Harvard. Nesta entrevista, realizada pelo Prof. Matheus Estevão Ferreira da Silva, foram realizadas 17 perguntas, que posteriormente, com o diálogo contínuo em mensagens eletrônicas, expandiram-se para 21 perguntas. Assim, as questões foram enviadas por e-mail dando-lhe o espaço que achasse necessário para respondê-las.

Abstract:

The paper discusses the ethical views of Carol Gilligan that emerged to dispute the theory of six stages of moral development developed by Lawrence Kohlberg. In his opinion, women tend to reach the higher stages of his scale less frequently than men do. According to C. Gilligan this does not evidence the moral supremacy of men over women, but the faulty de- sign of the research tool. In her opinion, the Kohlbergian conception was based on an ethics of justice that took into account an exclusively male point of view. Women, whose voice is not heard in the public sphere, adopt a different type of ethics, namely the ethics of caring. C. Gilligan believes that it is necessary to promote this specific type of female ethics in order to overcome male dominance which is harmful both for women and men. Introducing a fe- male ethics will make it possible to refute the ‘double lie’ underlying patriarchal civilization. The lie involves (1) the assumption that male ethics are universal; and (2) female concealment of their own models of moral reasoning.

Abstract:

This article reviews some of Carol Gilligan’s ideas on the ethics of care and justice, and describes the development and validation of a care-based moral development instrument, the Ethic of Care Interview (ECI). Following Gilligan’s theory, the ECI measures five hierarchical levels of care reasoning that involve a progressively more sophisticated understanding of human interconnection. A series of studies suggests that the ability to care both for others and oneself is a valuable human quality and an important aspect of positive adaptation across the lifespan. The link between care-based moral thought and identity development is strong, especially for women, as Gilligan suggests. Potential decisive determinants of growth in the care ethic and moral maturity are discussed. Gilligan and Erikson agree that crisis reveals and creates character. Conflict, tension and trauma are potential sources of growth and strength. Crisis and life changing events can propel people into a deeper understanding of themselves and the truth of human interdependence. Questions of morality are bound with questions of right and wrong, good and evil, and ultimately of the meaning of life itself. Why be moral? Why care? Why live? Kohlberg and Erikson say that faith and the experience of unconditional love (agape) is required to find an adequate answer to such profound questions. Both contemplated a similar higher spiritual stage of human development – a transcendent perspective beyond the universal to oneness with the whole of life, nature, cosmos or God. A potential parallel higher metaphoric ECI level is considered. It is concluded that care and justice each is a part of agape. Moral maturity involves an integration that reconciles the truths of both. Future studies and implications for moral education are suggested.

Trata-se da apresentação de resultados parciais de uma pesquisa concluída financiada pela Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP). Objetivou-se refletir sobre a obra de Carol Gilligan no tocante das críticas que teceu às teorias psicológicas do desenvolvimento, sobretudo da teoria do desenvolvimento moral de Lawrence Kohlberg, argumentando que conservavam um viés masculinizante. Entrou-se em contato com livros, capítulos de coletâneas e artigos de autoria de Gilligan que abordam as críticas tecidas pela autora, sendo, o principal desses materiais bibliográficos, o seu livro Uma voz diferente (In a Different Voice), publicado em 1982. Ressalta-se que Gilligan questionou a validade da teoria de Kohlberg ao argumentar que as mulheres se desenvolvem moralmente diferente dos homens, pois elas se orientariam pelo que chamou de Ética do Cuidado, enquanto eles se orientariam pela Ética da Justiça. As críticas de Gilligan são consideradas revolucionárias para o campo da Psicologia do Desenvolvimento Moral, além da própria Psicologia e da Ciência em geral, e com implicações de vanguarda ao pensamento feminista de sua época. Conclui-se sobre a importância de Gilligan ao modo de se fazer Ciência, quanto à participação nula das mulheres em dados amostrais e às considerações acerca do desenvolvimento feminino.

Carol Gilligan heard a ‘distinct moral language’ in the voices of women who were subjects in her studies of moral reasoning. Though herself a developmental psychologist, Gilligan has put her mark on contemporary feminist moral philosophy by daring to claim the competence of this voice and the worth of its message. O presente artigo tem como proposição dialogar com algumas ideias de Carol Gilligan, acerca de uma voz diferente, para pensarmos numa atuação no campo de pesquisa em psicologia que considere a ótica das mulheres acerca de si e do mundo. Para isso, partimos de uma pesquisa em curso intitulada “Versões do Sofrimento Psíquico Construídas por Jovens na Contemporaneidade: Articulações entre a Teoria Ator-Rede e a Clínica Gestáltica”, na qual acompanhamos 35 jovens mulheres e constatamos a presença do cuidado nas relações estabelecidas no grupo, bem como o reconhecimento do cuidado como prática e como ética. Seguindo as pistas oferecidas por Carol Gilligan e Annemarie Mol, enfatizamos essa prática do cuidado nas experiências e relatos explanados no texto que constituem vozes que clamam, que se encontram e se multiplicam, promovendo a possibilidade apontada pela própria Gilligan, quando ela nos mostra a importância de ampliar vozes na construção do conhecimento. A partir dessa ampliação, consideramos a importância de não compreendermos o sofrimento das mulheres exclusivamente pela ótica do adoecimento.

Neste artigo, reconstitui-se o debate inconclusivo travado entre Lawrence Kohlberg e Carol Gilligan em torno das diferenças de gênero no desenvolvimento moral e da universalidade desse constructo, debate iniciado na década de 1980 e estendido à contemporaneidade. Gilligan questionou a validade universal da teoria de Kohlberg ao argumentar que as mulheres se desenvolvem moralmente diferente dos homens, pois se orientariam pela Ética do Cuidado enquanto eles pela Ética da Justiça. Kohlberg rejeitou essa hipótese, o que causou uma cisão no campo da Psicologia do Desenvolvimento Moral, dividindo-o entre apoiadores(as) de Kohlberg e de Gilligan. A reconstituição do debate revela, além do que ele consistiu inicialmente, quais foram as réplicas do autor e tréplicas da autora às críticas de cada um(a) direcionadas ao posicionamento do(a) outro(a), a recepção do debate pelos(as) apoiadores(as) de cada lado e o despontar de autores(as) que, desde lá, apoiam a hipótese de Gilligan parcialmente.

El objetivo de este trabajo es situar la ética del cuidado en contexto de las éticas de la responsabilidad. Para ello analizamos la orientación hacia el cuidado en las éticas de la responsabilidad mostrando la transición de una responsabilidad limitada por el cálculo consecuencialista en la actividad política, a una responsabilidad integral exigida por la preservación de la naturaleza ante los desafíos de la ciencia y la técnica. Interpretamos la aportación de Carol Gilligan en términos de «provocación » a la ética contemporánea para que el cuidado no sea únicamente una categoría sentimental o afectiva sino una categoría con la que reconstruir reflexivamente la justicia social. Esta interpretación evita que la orientación al cuidado se reduzca a una introducción del género en la ética de la justicia y minusvalore el papel de la fundamentación en detrimento del activismo. Este fortalecimiento el cuidado de la responsabilidad resulta fecundo si leemos a Gilligan desde Hans Jonas. Se construye así una responsabilidad sustantiva e integral que levanta la «voz» y se convierte en grito para romper con el descuido, la indiferencia y la insensibilidad.

Gilligan's understanding of moral reasoning as a kind of perception has its roots in the conception of moral experience espoused by Simone Weil and Iris Murdoch. A clear understanding of that conception, however, reveals grave difficulties with Gilligan's descriptions of the care perspective and justice perspective. In particular, we can see that the two perspectives are not mutually exclusive once we recognize that attention does not require attachment and that impartiality does not require detachment.

Third wave anti-essentialist critique has too often been used to dismiss second wave feminist projects. I examine chims that Carol Gilligan's work is “essentialist,” and argue that her recent research requires this criticism be rethought. Anti-essentialist feminist method should consist in attention to the relations of power that construct accounts of gendered identity in the course of different forms of empirical enquiry, not in rejecting any general claim about women or girls.

Abstract:

Neste artigo, buscamos diálogos e problematizações, a partir de perspectivas feministas e críticas contemporâneas, com o trabalho da psicóloga estadunidense Carol Gilligan em torno do desenvolvimento moral, trabalho lançado em seu livro “Uma voz diferente” de 1982. O aporte teórico para esta análise são os estudos feministas contemporâneos, mais próximos do pós-estruturalistas e de perspectivas interseccionais. Gilligan teceu fortes críticas à teoria de Lawrence Kohlberg e a outras das principais teorias psicológicas do desenvolvimento de sua época, não só a um nível empírico como também epistemológico. Em âmbito global, seu trabalho foi igualmente aclamado como criticado por autoras(es) feministas, psicólogos(as) e filósofos(as) morais. Alguns dos problemas apontados ao trabalho de Gilligan, e esses em específico apontados pelo campo dos Estudos Feministas, são os de essencialismo identitário, de compactuar com binarismos e de buscar por um modelo de desenvolvimento generalizável. Reconhecemos a importância dessa autora e o vanguardismo de suas críticas e propostas, mas procuramos ressaltar a necessidade de se revisar algumas de suas proposições, que são questionadas pelas teorizações feministas pós-estruturalistas, assim como de se aprofundar e expandir em suas críticas à produção do conhecimento. Ao final, argumentamos que, embora Gilligan não seja uma autora pós-estruturalista, em seu pensamento atual, ela parece hoje estar mais próxima do pós-estruturalismo do que esteve em 1982, asseverando seu rompimento com o paradigma moderno de Ciência.

This article offers a gender reading of a brief dialogue between Rabbi Hiyya and his wife, Judith. Treated in light of Carol Gilligan and Judith Butler, the account reveals a female character who is surprisingly able to manipulate the masculine realm to her own ends. Faced with extreme pain in childbirth, Judith chooses not to approach her husband relationally, in what Gilligan would describe as a typically feminine mode of communication. Instead, Judith disguises herself and confronts him in the masculine sphere of the court setting. Her choice of location and approach suggests, as Butler might argue, that her disguise is actually an example of male “drag,” and her successful performance in the masculine sphere earns her the right to opt out of the system it oversees.

O objetivo do presente artigo é analisar qual o impacto epistemológico do trabalho de Carol Gilligan no sentido de uma revisão da moralidade humana. Ao descrever a chamada “ética do cuidado” no livro “Uma voz diferente: psicologia da diferença entre homens e mulheres da infância à idade adulta”, publicado em 1982, esta autora revelou o enviesamento da teoria tradicional sobre desenvolvimento moral, sobremaneira da escala de Lawrence Kohlberg, que universalizou experiências morais do universo masculino e ocultou, assim, a força da “ética do cuidado”, voz moral oriunda da experiência das mulheres. Nesse contexto, Gilligan foi alvo de críticas por parte de algumas autoras feministas, que classificaram seu trabalho como uma tentativa arbitrária de essencialismo sobre a condição das mulheres. Assim, o presente artigo busca discutir se as conclusões de Gilligan sobre a “ética do cuidado” realmente se restringem à condição feminina, como as críticas contra ela sugerem, ou se fornecem uma chave mais ampla, de reavaliação da moralidade humana como um todo, para além de dualismos de gênero

Abstract:

Issues of moral development and moral action have been explored by psychologists by both empirical and nonempirical methods. Lawrence Kohlberg's moral stages have been of particular interest and scrutiny since his longitudinal study of boys was first published in 1969. Harvard's Carol Gilligan contests Kohlberg's findings in her 1982 book In A Different Voice, as well as other publications, claiming that girls' morality developed differently from boys' and that Kohlberg's stages were not universal as he asserted. The debate over gender differences in moral development has focused primarily on these two theories. Numerous studies and articles have been published deliberating about both Kohlberg's and Gilligan's theories with most concluding there is no significant difference in the way the sexes make moral decisions. This article reviews the current literature of both theories, providing a context in which to view morality, and offers suggestions for future research.

Trata-se da apresentação de resultados parciais de uma pesquisa concluída financiada pela Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP) e dos primeiros resultados de um Programa de Pesquisa, em andamento, culminado a partir dela. Objetiva-se conhecer o estado atual das ideias de Carol Gilligan sobre o desenvolvimento moral das mulheres e de sua proposta de Ética do Cuidado na produção de pesquisa em Psicologia do Desenvolvimento Moral no Brasil, com recorte ao contexto paulista da produção. Analisou-se a produção de teses de doutorado e dissertações de mestrado provenientes de Programas de Pós-Graduação stricto sensu. Por meio de buscas na Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações (BDTD) a partir dos descritores “Carol Gilligan” e “Ética do cuidado”, sem delimitação temporal, foram encontrados 45 trabalhos, 38 dissertações e 07 teses, mas, considerando-se apenas pesquisas que tinham o desenvolvimento moral como tema de pesquisa, restaram apenas cinco, 03 dissertações e 02 teses. Devido a essa escassez, buscou-se mapear e analisar as produções de três Programas de Pós-Graduação em Educação vinculados a três diferentes Universidades públicas paulistas, em que parte de suas produções volta-se para o campo da Psicologia do Desenvolvimento Moral em intersecção com a Educação. No período delimitado de 2008-2019, foram encontrados 70 trabalhos, 41 dissertações e 29 teses, sendo 18 dissertações e 07 teses do apenas 06 dissertações e 09 teses citam Gilligan, limitando-se, quase em sua totalidade, a referi-la como uma crítica à teoria de Lawrence Kohlberg e sem maiores aprofundamentos em seu trabalho. Programa A, 10 dissertações e 10 teses do Programa B e 13 dissertações e 12 teses do Programa C, todas com o desenvolvimento moral como tema de pesquisa. Tendo em vista os 40 anos da publicação original de In a Different Voice: Psychological Theory and Women's Development, este texto revisita as principais propostas teóricas de Carol Gilligan tendo em vista a corrente de pensamento conhecida como "feminismo da diferença". Ele se debruça sobre a forma através da qual a autora leva em conta a construção das diferenças entre homens e mulheres. Olhando para as contribuições de Gilligan, buscamos compreender como essa concepção de diferença corroborou um esforço epistemológico de descentramento da voz masculina nos debates sobre as formas de conhecer e agir no mundo. Assim, reportamo-nos a algumas de suas escolhas metodológicas e teóricas para a elaboração do que chamou de uma "ética do cuidado" - que tentava descrever o senso de conexão e interdependência que marcaria o desenvolvimento feminino em nossa sociedade - em contraponto a uma "ética da justiça" - modelo de amadurecimento moral masculino marcado pela abstração, no processo decisório, da relação entre o indivíduo e aqueles em relação aos quais ele existem. O estudo de Gilligan é famoso por descrever e criticar a hegemonia da ética da justiça nas formas de avaliar o desenvolvimento moral das pessoas como um exemplo do masculinismo que marca uma ciência composta majoritariamente por homens. Contudo, este não é o único aspecto deste artigo. Nele denota-se como os argumentos da autora estavam sendo formados concomitantemente às análises propostas por diferentes feministas da década de 1980 em diferentes áreas do conhecimento. Todas essas mulheres traziam um forte posicionamento contra as naturalizações e as essencializações invisibilizadas nos processos de legitimação androcêntrica do fazer científico. Outrossim, apresentamse liames epistêmicos que contidos nas perguntas abarcadas pela chamada "voz diferente" das mulheres enquanto refletimos sobre o que esta voz dizia frente a m momento em grande ebulição social, política, cultural - contexto que apontava para a necessidade de mudanças nas formas canonizadas de conhecer em nossa sociedade, a partir da inserção da experiência das mulheres como sujeitos do fazer científico. Interpelando as propostas teóricas de Carol Gilligan no contexto de seu próprio lugar histórico e intelectual, intentamos observar nuances, diferenciações e interseccionalidades que ficaram de fora de suas análises, bem como evidenciar os caminhos abertos por sua obra para as epistemes do cuidado.

Dans leur réflexion sur le raisonnement moral, critique d’une approche rationaliste stricte, les théories du care et les philosophies travaillant à une compréhension enrichie de la raison pratique se sont attachées à mettre en valeur l’importance éthique qu’il y a à envisager la perspective de l’autre. Elles se sont concentrées à cette fin sur le travail de l’imagination. On montre ici que l’éthique du care de Gilligan, l’éthique de la narration de Nussbaum et l’éthique de la sollicitude ricoeurienne, quoique différentes, se renforcent mutuellement à partir d’une compréhension renouvelée du rôle de l’imagination dans la morale. Si l’enquête psychologique de Gilligan, la philosophie de la littérature chez Nussbaum et l’herméneutique du texte chez Ricoeur diffèrent, ces trois auteur.es ont en commun de ne pas se satisfaire des méfaits d’une rationalité instrumentale qui bride la créativité pratique des actrices morales et acteurs moraux. Il appartiendrait à l’imagination éthique de prendre la mesure de la complexité des situations morales et d’en suivre les variations subtiles, afin de prendre soin de formes de vies rendues invisibles ou d’existences vulnérables.

Abstract Pioneered by feminist ethicist and psychologist Carol Gilligan in her 1982 work In a Different Voice, care theory rests, according to philosopher Rita Manning, on four key elements: Moral Attention, Sympathetic Understanding, Relationship Awareness, and Harmony. Combined with the notion of voice present in Gilligan’s title, each of these components represents a key portion of the translator-text-author relationship, particularly when translation is seen as negotiation. In this contribution, after examining the notion of translation as negotiation as Eco describes it, I will offer an overview of the psycho-sociological theory of care, with the aim of presenting it as a framework for ethical decision-making in negotiating the act of translation. The importance of translaboration will become evident through the theories of Ricoeur and an emphasis on the cooperative nature of ethically negotiated decisions; i.e., ‘trans’ and its insistence on moving across, beyond, through; and ‘laboration’ and its insistence on the continuing and ongoing process of working.

Abstract:

This paper offers a comparative reading of Cleopatra, the most famous Egyptian queen in history, as portrayed by William Shakespeare in Antony and Cleopatra (1606) and Ahamad Shawqi in Mas’ra’ Cleopatra, (Death of Cleopatra) (1927). It aims at analyzing both portrayals from developmental psychological and feminist perspectives demonstrated particularly in Carol Gilligan’s theories. Gilligan explored the development of women’s morality and ethics of care in her influential book In a Different Voice (1982) and other subsequent publications. The aim is to investigate how Shakespeare and Shawqi portray her as a female protagonist, her manner of thinking, and her system of values. Cleopatra’s dilemma as a woman in her different roles as a queen, political leader, wife, mother, and lover is examined in the light of these theories of ethics of care/ justice and the power im/balance between the sexes. The methodology used in this study integrates Gilligan’s perspectives of women’s concepts of the self, morality, and how women handle issues of conflict and moral choices. The study reveals how both dramatists successfully portray Cleopatra’s moral reasoning with its different dynamics, struggling with her conflicts, choices, and decisions to find her own moral voice and self.

This article explores recent charges of Western-centrism and gender essentialism in care ethics. In response to these charges, and informed by the work of Carol Gilligan, I argue for a view of care ethics that regards it not primarily as a normative theory advocating for care and care workers, but as a critical ethics that voices and enacts resistance to Cartesian splits and hierarchies. These are not just gender hierarchies; rather, care ethics resists all binaries that divide people into categories and separate them from others, and, indeed, from themselves.

Introduction: In previous issues of this journal, Carol Gilligan’s original concept of mature care has been conceptualized by several (especially Norwegian) contributors. This has resulted in a dichotomous view of self and other, and of self-care and altruism, in which any form of self-sacrifice is rejected. Although this interpretation of Gilligan seems to be quite persistent in care-ethical theory, it does not seem to do justice to either Gilligan’s original work or the tensions experienced in contemporary nursing practice. Discussion: A close reading of Gilligan’s concept of mature care leads to a view that differs radically from any dichotomy of self-care and altruism. Instead of a dichotomous view, a dialectical view on self and other is proposed that builds upon connectedness and might support a care-ethical view of nursing that is more consistent with Gilligan’s own critical insights such as relationality and a practice-based ethics. A concrete case taken from nursing practice shows the interconnectedness of professional and personal responsibility. This underpins a multilayered, complex view of self-realization that encompasses sacrifices as well. Conclusion: When mature care is characterized as a practice of a multilayered connectedness, caregivers can be acknowledged for their relational identity and nursing practices can be recognized as multilayered and interconnected. This view is better able to capture the tensions that are related to today’s nursing as a practice, which inevitably includes sacrifices of self. In conclusion, a further discussion on normative conceptualizations of care is proposed that starts with a non-normative scrutiny of caring practices.

O livro foi escrito em 1920 e publicado em 1925, tendo como personagem principal Clarissa Dalloway, uma mulher conhecida por oferecer festas, para a elite da sociedade de Londres, do séc. XX. O presente estudo pretende discutir sobre o desenvolvimento moral da personagem Mrs. Dalloway, à luz da teoria de Carol Gilligan (1982), no livro Uma Voz Diferente. Nesta obra, a autora afirma que existe um conflito entre o eu e o outro, a partir do qual é constituído o problema moral decisivo para as mulheres, que suscita um dilema, cuja solução exige a conciliação entre feminilidade e idade adulta. No processo de construção do trabalho, foram realizadas pesquisas bibliográficas, baseadas em autores (as) que auxiliaram com a análise literária da obra, que teve foco na personagem principal Clarissa Dalloway. Dentre esses (as) autores (as), encontra-se Oliveira (1979), analisando a obra tecnicamente e pontuando os conteúdos mais relevantes dela. Ademais, cita-se Woolf (1929), retratando a mulher na ficção, no século XX. O resultado da pesquisa enfatiza o conflito interno vivenciado pela personagem principal, que foi causado por influências sociais e a fizeram questionar sua existência.

I appropriate Deleuze and Guattari's concept of the refrain for a feminist analysis of the girl because it offers more insight into the ways girls construct themselves as performative networks than the death-by-culture or at-risk model preferred by such feminists as Jean Kilbourne, Carol Gilligan, and even Susan Bordo. I proffer that it costs women everything to practise a politics of difference that is by definition reactionary, a reaction to the cultural refusal of leaky gendered bodies that must be overcome. Girl is mapped through such alternations as powerful aggregates of the tremulous, roaming emissions of monstrous particles most desired and desirous.

Institutional ethics committees (lECs) in health care facilities now create moral policy, provide moral education, and consult with physicians and other health care workers. After sketching reasons for the development of IECs, this paper first examines the predominant moral standards it is often assumed lECs are now using, these standards being neo-Kantian principles of justice and utilitarian principles of the greatest good. Then, it is argued that a feminine ethics of care, as posited by Carol Gilligan and Nel Noddings, is an unacknowledged basis for /EC discussions and decisions. Further, it is suggested that feminine ethics of care can and should provide underlying theoretical tools and standards for lECs.
