Abstract Carpentry skills were among the most important elements of building practice in premodern China and Japan, and traditional carpentry skills continue in use in both countries to the present day. Although their importance has been greatly marginalised in building practice, in both countries some master carpenters have gained public recognition. This paper compares the modernisation of traditional building knowledge in China and Japan, and the fate of carpentry knowledge as the building industry and the formal discipline of architecture evolved. It distinguishes three phases in this hist

Abstract The phrase “cosmic consciousness” has a surprising and fascinating history. I will show how it first enters into circulation in the writings of the remarkable Englishman Edward Carpenter (1844–1929), a socialist, philosopher, and prescient activist for gay rights and prison reform. Carpenter made a trip to India and Sri Lanka in 1890, where he spent two months sitting at the feet of Ramaswami, an Indian sage and disciple of Tilleinathan Swami. Carpenter invents the phrase in order to paraphrase Ramaswami’s teaching, which was itself a commonplace among the Advaita-inspired sages of th

Wanne Mendonck, “‘I Sort Rather with Those who Do Not Read’: Edward Carpenter, the Religion of Socialism, and the Prophetic Agitation of Literary Form” (pp. 56–90) Edward Carpenter’s prose poem Towards Democracy (1883) constructs “new forms” to frame a radical voice that helped shape the British “socialist revival” of the 1880s and 1890s. Formal questions, however, have often been skirted in relation to Carpenter, or referred to his reputation as a disciple of Walt Whitman. This article argues, by contrast, that they can be productively asked in relation to a prophetic understanding of individ

Likewise, with representations of dog, house, and kennel, an algorithm should be able to recognize that the semantic composition of dog and house, dog house, is highly similar to kennel (dog house and kennel are synonymous). Two species of large carpenter bees (genus Xylocopa) were studied in southern Arizona. Nesting preference of X. c. arizonensis in floral scapes of Agave palmeri was found to depend on floral scape age and status of the thermal microenvironment. Evidence suggests that females assess scape age with extreme accuracy and this ability enables them to avoid those scapes that are degraded by other biota. Females also preferentially used Agave scapes that were shaded from the afternoon sunlight. Male mating behavior and lek site selection of X. varipuncta was also investigated near a large nesting sit

Stomata consist of two specialised epidermal cells termed guard cells (GCs) surrounding a pore, through which gas exchange can occur. In Arabidopsis thaliana, a dedicated cell lineage is initiated and undergoes a series of cell divisions to produce a stoma. The initiation and proliferation of stomatal lineage cells is controlled by the transcription factor SPEECHLESS (SPCH), which drive the asymmetric division of meristemoid mother cell to originate a small triangular cell ter

This thesis argues that British scholars Havelock Ellis, John Addington Symonds, and Edward Carpenter viewed themselves as somewhat rebellious, attempting to reconstruct norms of sexuality, particularly those concerning homosexuality. To do so, they invoked the well‐established constructions of class, gender, and sex. Nevertheless, in spite of their attempts problematize these constructions, they simultaneously worked within and reinforced them. Ellis, Carpenter and Symonds desired to change widelyheld perceptions of homosexuality and while doing so, alter notions of class, gender, and sex. Th
