Full textIn a changing and unpredictable international environment, uncontrolled events may occur in an individual’s career which results in the beginning of a “second career”. However, this restarting career is more complicated for a category of persons: the old workers. In 2009, the employment rate was 38.9% for individuals aged 55 to 64 which shows the difficulty for those people to prolong their working life. The literature proposes two approaches for this subject: objective and subjective, and introduces the “career lifecycle” concept. Our research is to explain the objective and subjective career cycle structures by identifying events uncontrolled by individuals, called “critical career incident”. The study based on the Worldwide Express case, showed the existence of mono-cycle and multi-cycle objective and subjective career lifecycle. It also highlighted critical incidents of individual and organizational careers which could be “positive” or “negative” for the individual’s career. This research has identified common characteristics that are appropriate to the objective and subjective career cycle structures. Finally, the empirical study showed that it was impossible for the old workers aged 50 or more to restart a new objective or subjective career cycle. Indeed, from this age the critical incidents in their career always influence negatively the professional life on these persons. This study proposes to the old workers and the organizations to understand the critical incidents of their career in order to start with a new “step” for the latter. For this reason it is suggested to “forget” the notion of age but rather to the age of the carreer, i.e. experiences as a decisive criterion in career management

Full textCareer success is traditionally defined as objective or subjective. In a complex and changing economy, it is more and more important to understand the determinants of objective career success. Human capital and cultural capital are regular predictors to objective career success. But organizations have changed. Careers unfold in ambiguous, but ongoing and valued contexts. In such contexts, individuals must make sense by themselves concerning decisions to be made, opportunities to be constructed or occurrences that may be undergone. For this purpose they use a repertoire of cognitive schemas that constitute a career frame of reference. Hypotheses A suggest that the career frame of reference is a moderator of the influence of human capital and of cultural capital on objective career success. Reciprocally, careers and organizations shape the career frame of reference. Thus, hypotheses B claim that the type of careers has an influence on the career frame of reference.Three methods were used: qualitative pre-survey, scales development and cognitive mapping (602 individuals). Cognitive maps were constructed thanks to a new technique that helps avoiding the biases. Factorial analyses show that the career frame of reference is a four-dimensional construct. The four dimensions describe the “career worlds”, i.e. the shareholders and the associated beliefs involved in one’s career. Data collected show the radicalization of objective career success differences among French executives. Hypotheses A are partially supported by the data. Objective career success is predicted by human capital, but it is moderated by the career frame of reference. Competencies are not enough to reach objective career success. Career frame of reference has a pragmatic and symbolic efficiency: successful careerists’ frame of reference validate norms and ideologies about the efficiency of free job markets and fair competition among employees for achievement. Hypotheses B are supported by the data. The type of careers leads to specific career frame of reference

Full textWhen parents use drugs, it is tempting to wonder what impact this practice will have on their children. Our work asks the opposite question. We look at how parents who use illicit substances are affected by their children's socialization and how this affects the way they use drugs. It is in the prism of this issue that we approach the specific case of shared consumption. By combining participant observation, semi-directive interviews and document analysis, the survey aims to observe the interactions between families in which at least one minor child has used an illicit substance with his or her parents and the actors responsible for prescribing, disseminating and guaranteeing standards of parenting. The investigation was carried out in two sections corresponding to these two populations. It concluded that parenthood is a career dependent on the socialization of the child. As a framework of constraint, it contradicts the framework of consumption. In this sense, the child constitutes the cursor of a normative tension between the parental career and the consumer career. Including or excluding the child from drug-related practices is, for the parent, part of a strategy to develop both careers

Full textThe second career is an analysis of the dynamics of ages and social times for the entire lifespan, as well as their changes. Set in the framework of the sociology of age and the life cycle, this work is at the crossroads of the sociology of work, the sociology of leisure, and the sociology of the family. The surveys and research deal with the situation and the transformations taking place in the second half of life in industrial societies today : employment and unemployment, early retirement and retirement, family life and leisure, health and life expectancy, personality changes. This thesis demonstrates that a second career and a new age are emerging : a period of several decades which is no longer that of young adulthood but not yet the of old age. Its characteristics are analyzed as well as its implications for the restructuring of different ages and the life cycle as a function of societal (economic, social, cultural) changes. In contrast to models of the post-world war two period of economic growth, a variety of scenarios for the future are discussed

Full textA political biography, that of Henry de Jouvenel (1876-1935), allows an understanding of a political destiny of a person who played the role of a turning point between the notable citizens of the 19th century and the political men of the 20th. Furthermore Henry de Jouvenel's itinerary situates him in a genuine dynastic line : heir to a large conservative family, Henry de Jouvenel joined the ranks of radicalism, a commitment which offers many rewarding paths of research for the historian. For the researcher, the difficulty lies in the exuberant activity of this brilliant dilettante. Nevertheless, several research approaches can be considered : - the influence wielded by an editor in chief of "le matin", a newspaper which served as an interface for the world of culture and art. - his prominet role in the radicalist movement. - the impact of a French delegate at the league of nations between 1922 and 1926 : one of the most-listened to men in Geneva, a man who was also an enthusiastic propagandist for the ideals of collective security and disarmement, a man who was a representative figure of a multinational milieu then present in Geneva. - the study of a senator from the Correze region and his difficult settlement in local politics. - the innovative action led from 1925-1926 as a high commissioner in Lebanon and Syria and his important role when he was an ambassador in Rome in 1933 at the time of the signature of the "Pact of Four" which led to the French Italian reconciliation which he considered crucial

Full textThe present labour market destabilize the labour society and, with the disappearance of the long-terme employment relationship, employees are forced to develop career strategies to protect themselves from new social risks. However, companies in the food industry are facing difficulties in recruiting and retaining employees needed for their development. Therefore, it appears that the organizational career continues to serve the strategic interests of the companies. In this research, we wonder about the future of careers: “How is the organizational career evolving in the food industries?”. Our objectives are, on one side, to respond to a concrete career management problem in the food industry in France and, on the other side, to extend the current knowledge of vocational guidance that seem insufficient in the light of phenoma observed in the labor market. In addition, we are interested in all socioprofesionnal categories, and in particular the working-class population, which seems largely forgotten in career management research. In order to ancitipate these evolutions, we develop an appropriate methodology by combining the theory of career anchors with the jobs prospective method. The new method, which we call “career foresight”, is based on the analysis of one hundred and forty empirical studies, fifty-eight semi-structured interviews, one hundred and eighty-three self-administered questionnaires, a focus group and a webinar. Our main results concern the co-construction of five prospective career scenarios, the identification of thirty-four possible career orientations and the operationalization of the self-prospective concept

Full textThe tunisian civil service model, tracing back to the deep history of pre-independence tunisia is based on a conception where the notion of career occupies a central place. Having its roots in the administrative tradition, the civil service conception directly derives from the system of career hammered out, in the long run by the french administrative law. The independant tunisia preferring a secure conituity to incertitude, has deemed it necessairy to stick to hisphilosophy, which is very common in many countries, while including suitable modifications dicted by needs an imperatives of local context. We can fear that such an approach could lead to a diversion from the initial system towards a new type of civil service far away from the career system. In fact, the analyses we have carried out gave unequavocally proved the continuity of this system and the absence of any attempt to replace it. However, if the tunisian civil service remains mainly based on the notion of career the latter undergoes, under the pressure of needs, alterations which without really diverting from the basic conception, reveal the necessity to seek solutions which are not always genuine and corresponding to the traditional principles of civil service career
