Full textThis receiver consists of a bank of analog receive filters, the number of which equals the dimension of the CAP line code, and a matrix of cross-connected, infinite-length, baud-spaced feedback filters. It is shown that the optimum filters and the corresponding MMSE of the DFE receiver require the factorisation of a discrete-time channel spectral matrix. This mathematically intractable step can be avoided, however, when the DFE results are specialised to a standard 2-D CAP system where we are able to again exploit the Hilbert transform pair relationship to derive a further and more useful MMSE expression. Three sets of numerical studies are given on the MMSE performance of the CAP receivers. In the first set of studies. we model the sum of all crosstalks as an additive, Gaussian noise source and select three test transmission channels over which we compare the MMSE performance of the linear and DFE receiver structures. In the second set of studies, we compare the performance of the two receiver structures, but in a data-like cross-talk environment. The results demonstrate the importance of NEXT equalisation in the design of CAP receivers operating in a NEXT dominant environment. In the final set of studies which follows from the second set of studies, we investigate the relationship between the MMSE performance of the DFE receiver and system parameters which include excess bandwidth, data rate, CAP scheme. and relative phase between the received signal and the NEXT signal. The results show that data-like cross-talks can be effectively suppressed by using a large excess bandwidth (alpha > 1 in the case of a RC transmit shaping filter) alone.
The relative phase also affect; the receiver performance. but to a lesser degree. In addition to the MMSE performance analysis. implementation issues of an adaptive linear CAP receiver are also considered. We propose a novel linear receiver by appending two fixed analog filters to the front-end of the existing adaptive linear receiver using fractionally-spaced equalisers (FSE). We show that if the analog filters are matched to the transmit shaping filters, then inphase and quadrature finite-length FSEs in the proposed receiver have the same NINISE solution. We further propose a modified least-mean-square (LMS) algorithm which takes advantage of this feature. The convergence analysis of the proposed LMS algorithm is also given. We show that the modified LMS algorithm converges approximately twice as fast as the standard LMS algorithm, given the same misadjustment, or alternatively, it halves the misadjustment, given the same initial convergence rate.

Full textNowadays, the number of connected devices requiring access to mobile data is considerably increasing. The arrival of even more connected multimedia objects and the growing demand for more information per device highlighted the limits of the fourth generation of broadband cellular networks (4G). This pushed for the development of new methods, one of which is 5G. The goal is to be able to support the growth of wearable, sensors, or related internet-of-object (IoT) systems. The vision behind 5G is to enable a fully mobile and connected society with a consistent experience. In consequence, there is a fundamental need to achieve a seamless and consistent user experience across time and space.Small cells are the basis of advanced communications standards such as 4G and now, 5G. They exist as a result of using higher frequency bands for RF access in order to support new standards and the increasing demands in bandwidth. 5G use millimeter waves and requires a deployment across indoor and dense urban environment which may prove to be a challenge. This is where 5G will need to include hybrid networking solutions and be able to coexist with other wireless access technologies. Visible light communication (VLC) fits into that mold since visible light corresponds to the band between 400 and 800 THz. The available spectrum is multiple thousand times the size of the RF spectrum and it does not interfere with it. The technique combines illumination with communication at possibly tens of gigabits per second. It has the potential to offer a synergistic pairing with 5G in a hybrid network, offering high speed, no interferences, and more security at the cost of limited coverage and low technological maturity. The goal of this thesis is thus to propose and evaluate an experimental implementation of an indoor multi-user VLC system in order to answer the objectives of Li-Fi setup in the context of a small cell. The first step of this study is a detailed state-of-the-art on VLC in indoor wireless communication and multi-user access. It allows the design of our work to be better explained and to compare our approach with existing works. The second step is an analysis of the principles and hypothesis supporting the indoor multi-user VLC system in the study both on the modulation technique and the multi-user access schemes. The conclusions drawn from theoretical and numerical analysis are used as a basis for the rest of the work. The third step is the experimental setup investigations on the single-user broadcast performances optimization and then on the multi-user performances of the system using various schemes. The total throughput using an off-the-shelf white LED reaches 163 Mb/s with a bit-error rate decreased by a factor of 3.55 thanks to the performance optimization process. This technique has the advantage of increasing the flexibility for a multi-access scenario while not augmenting the complexity as it only optimizes the modulation filter parameters. The multi-user access is obtained for a cell size of 4.56 m² at a distance of 2.15 meter away from the transmitter. The user capacity can reach up to 40 users, or 40.62 Mb/s in a 4-user scenario. It is thus demonstrated that the proposed system could function as a cell at a realistic range, with high data rate and the ability to provide for a large amount of users while limiting the cost of implementation

Full textVisible Light Communications (VLC) have attracted particular attention in the research community since a few years as a promising solution for high-speed indoor wireless networks. By exploiting the existing solid-state light-emitting diode (LED) lighting infrastructure, VLC offer numerous advantages such as a large unlicensed bandwidth, transmission security, and immunity to electro-magnetic interference compared to their radiofrequency counterparts. Within the context of indoor VLC, the multipath propagation channel and the non-ideal characteristics of the commercial white LEDs cause the main limitations for achieving high data-rate transmission. The objective of this thesis is to investigate the true impact of these limitations on the data transmission and to propose efficient signal processing solutions to mitigate their adverse effects. We start by the study of the indoor VLC channel impulse response by developing an efficient simulation tool. We then consider evaluating the channel frequency selectivity through different metrics. Next, given the potentially frequency-selective channel and the limited modulation bandwidth of the LEDs, we investigate the suitability of employing different signal transmission techniques including optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (O-OFDM) in order to achieve high data-rate transmission. Given the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of O-OFDM signals and the limited dynamic range of the LEDs, we then propose a novel transmission scheme, which consists of using carrier-less amplitude and phase (CAP) modulation together with frequency domain equalization (FDE) at the receiver. We analyze the performance of the VLC link using this technique and compare it with the O-OFDM schemes, especially by taking the non-linear characteristics of the LED into account. Lastly, we demonstrate the merits of using the CAP-FDE transmission scheme via some experimental results

New techniques for improving outphasing transmitters show potential of breaking the traditional linearity-efficiency trade-off by using highly efficient non-linear switching Power Amplifiers (PAs). This work focuses on two of the main building blocks of modem outphasing systems, the power supply switching network and the phase modulator. Both are ubiquitous building blocks in modern RF transceivers, and both are especially critical in Asymmetric Multilevel Outphasing (AMO) systems. A design of the power supply network and control scheme is proposed for an implementation in mm-wave operating frequencies as part of a complete transmitter in 45nm SOI CMOS utilizing four discrete power supplies and achieving data rates of up to 4GS/s. The design includes analysis and simulation of the control signal data path requirements for optimal system operation as well as switch optimization and effects of the driving strength on overall system performance. A new design concept is proposed for a phase modulator utilizing the phase shifthing capabilities of a resonant tank and the ability to seperately control the circuit properties via its components. A prototype in 65nm CMOS achieves 12 bits of resolution, with an Effective Number Of Bits (ENOB) of 10.2 bits and very fast settling time of less than 5 carrier cycles. The chip is also tested as a stand alone transmitter showing an EVM of less than 5% for 8-PSK modulation at maximum data rate, meeting the requirements for operation at the Medical Implant Communication Services (MICS) band.

Full textLETI possesses an expertise allowing to realize Spatial Light Modulators (SLMs) made in microelectronic technology on silicon, having very high resolutions and very small pixel steps. LETI wishes to use a specific LCD technology (IPS technology), on the one hand the electro-optical performances in the field of micro-display had to be investigated but on the other hand allows to keep costs down and reduce the number of manufacturing steps. The objective of this thesis is to evaluate on the basis of simulations and technical achievements, the performance of a micro-SLM IPS used in phase modulation and amplitude. Our investigations have been carried out on four major areas of study. The first axis is the search and testing of a specific software (LCDMaster) to simulate liquid crystal cells and floating electrodes. The second axis according to different designs of pixel and the different liquid crystal alignment modes (Homogeneous, vertical and twisted) with an IPS type control, to investigate the performances in modulation phase. The best results were obtained for a vertical alignment providing a phase shift of 2π. In addition, the performance of an adaptive optics device integrating the studied SLM has been investigated. The third axis of study focused on the performance investigation of a liquid crystal SLM with an IPS-type control using a homogeneous alignment in amplitude modulation (static and dynamic study). This study also makes it possible to study the possibilities of reducing the response time of the cell. It resulted in two SLM designs. The first design with two levels of electrodes separated by an insulator to reproduce a Faraday type effect. The second has drastically reduced the response time. The fourth area of research consists in testing prototypes based on these two designs to validate the performances obtained in simulation. Concordant results have been obtained and new types of IPS-controlled SLMs with state-of-the-art refreshing times have thus been designated and characterized

Full textSeveral optical encryption techniques have been developed due to the need to transmit information in a secure and reliable way. In these techniques the information is encrypted in a way that to recover the encrypted information is necessary to have a previous knowledge of the same mask that encrypted it, being this mask unique. Because of this, the techniques are robust. These image encryption methods work with the phase distribution obtained directly from the image that is intended to encrypt and consequently the decrypted image will also be in the phase modulation. But, images in a phase distribution are not visible for the human eyes. To transform them in an amplitude modulation, that is visible for the human eyes, it is used the Zernike phase contrast method. Then, it is proposed a method for encryption and decryption of information processed in a binary form in an amplitude modulation. After the decryption process, the image obtained is recognized because the human eyes are able to differentiate continuous, periodical regions to random pattern. This method has an easy implementation and it can be obtained using regular and inexpensive materials, like paper, plastic films, etc. Many attacks were realized against the proposed method to analyse if this method is robust. This method can not resist the known-plaintext attack and the known-ciphertext attack.

Full textOver the years, the increased search and exchange of information lead to an increase of traffic intensity in todays optical communication networks. Coherent communications, using the amplitude and phase of the signal, reappears as one of the transmission techniques to increase the spectral efficiency and throughput of optical channels. In this context, this work present a study on format conversion of modulated signals using MZI-SOAs, based exclusively on all- optical techniques through wavelength conversion. This approach, when applied in interconnection nodes between optical networks with different bit rates and modulation formats, allow a better efficiency and scalability of the network. We start with an experimental characterization of the static and dynamic properties of the MZI-SOA. Then, we propose a semi-analytical model to describe the evolution of phase and amplitude at the output of the MZI-SOA. The model’s coefficients are obtained using a multi-objective genetic algorithm. We validate the model experimentally, by exploring the dependency of the optical signal with the operational parameters of the MZI-SOA. We also propose an all-optical technique for the conversion of amplitude modulation signals to a continuous phase modulation format. Finally, we study the potential of MZI-SOAs for the conversion of amplitude signals to QPSK and QAM signals. We show the dependency of the conversion process with the operational parameters deviation from the optimal values. The technique is experimentally validated for QPSK modulation.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis investigates orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) as a viable modulation technique for an ultrasonic acoustic underwater modem. The underwater environment provides a challenging setting for acoustic communications. Long delay spreads due to multipath propagation, severe Doppler frequency shifts, frequency dependent absorption and very limited bandwidth are but some of the challenges to overcome. OFDM essentially provides the parallel transmission of symbols in the frequency domain by simultaneously modulating many closely spaced orthogonal subcarriers. The resulting long parallel symbol rate together with the cyclic extension of symbols render the signal robust against intersymbol interference (ISI) caused by multipath propagation. Intercarrier interference (ICI) between the overlapping frequency responses of subcarriers is mitigated by their property of orthogonality. Doppler spread contributes to the loss of orthogonality and can result in severe ICI. A method of measuring the Doppler shift by means of including a preamble and postamble symbol with each data frame is proposed. The detected frequency offset is corrected by resampling the frame at the desired sample rate. Not only do the ambles serve as a mechanism for timing and frequency synchronisation, but they are also applied in the channel estimation process. The equalisation of channel response is required for the coherent demodulation of the received symbols. An investigation into different phase shift keying (PSK) and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellations reveal optimal arrangements for minimal symbol errors. The optimised QAM constellations do not lend themselves to Gray-coding, so that an efficient interleaving scheme is needed to mitigate the non-uniform distribution of bit errors among symbol errors. Forward error correction is provided via a Bose Chaudhuri Hocquenghem (BCH) block code. Variable code rates, together with the ability to switch between different constellations, enable the modem to perform so-called variable modulation in an attempt to maximise the throughput under specific channel conditions. The modulation/demodulation scheme is wholly defined in software as to provide flexibility and facilitate experimentation with different signal processing methods. The accompanying hardware platform allows for the transmission of a pre-generated signal and the recording of a received signal for off-line processing. The prototype design serves as a proof of concept and thus provides only simplex communication. Field tests over limited distances demonstrate the successful operation of the prototype modem. We conclude that OFDM is indeed a suitable modulation technique for acoustic underwater communication.

Full textThe continuous demand for highly efficient wireless transmitter systems has triggered an increased interest in switching mode techniques to handle the required power amplification. The RF carrier amplitude-burst transmitter, i.e. a wireless transmitter chain where a phase-modulated carrier is modulated in amplitude in an on-off mode, according to some prescribed envelope-to-time conversion, such as pulse-width or sigma-delta modulation, constitutes a promising architecture capable of efficiently transmitting signals of highly demanding complex modulation schemes. However, the tested practical implementations present results that are way behind the theoretically advanced promises (perfect linearity and efficiency). My original contribution to knowledge presented in this thesis is the first thorough study and model of the power efficiency and linearity characteristics that can be actually achieved with this architecture. The analysis starts with a brief revision of the theoretical idealized behavior of these switched-mode amplifier systems, followed by the study of the many sources of impairments that appear when the real system is implemented. In particular, a special attention is paid to the dynamic load modulation caused by the often ignored interaction between the narrowband signal reconstruction filter and the usual single-ended switched-mode power amplifier, which, among many other performance impairments, forces a two transistor implementation. The performance of this architecture is clearly explained based on the presented theory, which is supported by simulations and corresponding measured results of a fully working implementation. The drawn conclusions allow the development of a set of design rules for future improvements, one of which is proposed and verified in this thesis. It suggests a significant modification to this traditional architecture, where now the phase modulated carrier is always on – and thus allowing a single transistor implementation – and the amplitude is impressed into the carrier phase according to a bi-phase code.

The main reason for such intense focus is the wide applicability of the research achievements to medical, financial and optical applications, as well as radar/sonar signal processing and system analysis. Accurate estimation of sinusoidal parameters is one of the most common digital signal processing tasks and thus represents an indispensable building block of a wide variety of applications. Classic time-frequency transformations are appropriate only for signals with slowly varying amplitude and frequency content - an assumption often violated in practice. In such cases, reduced readability and the presence of artefacts represent a significant problem. Time and frequency resolu

A systematic design of unitary space-time modulation using phase shift-keying (PSK) signals was proposed in 2000. In this thesis, we propose three schemes of unitary space-time modulation (USTM) that use amplitude phase-shift keying (APSK) signal points. We utilize the computer to search codes in USTM that maximize the diversity product ζ. Several of searched codes in Scheme 1 and Scheme 3 have better diversity product ζ than the codes for the proposed scheme in 2000. Simulation results confirm that our searched codes have better error performances than the proposed scheme in 2000.

This dissertation studies the application of carrier-less amplitude phase modulation (CAP) in short-reach MMF transmission. In addition to two different modulation orders (i.e., CAP-16 and CAP-32), we adopted two kinds of filters in CAP modulation, which are named by Filter 1 and Filter 2. The frequency responses of two data paths in Filter 1 are root raised cosine functions multiplied by sine and cosine, and this scheme is not only inter symbol interference- (ISI-) free but also maintains orthogonality between two paths. As to Filter 2, the root raised cosine function and its Hilbert transform are directly used as the frequency responses of two data paths. Although higher spectral efficiency can be achieved by Filter 2, the orthogonality between two paths does not hold unless the roll-off factor is zero. We used the Volterra and decision feedback equalizer (DFE) to equalize the CAP signals, and the corresponding improvement can demonstrate the characteristics of the used filters. First of all, we experimentally compared the CAP signals based on the two filters at optical back-to-back. When the symbol rate is low, Filter 1 can outperform due to the orthogonality. However, when the symbol rate increases, Filter 2 can perform better due to its better spectral efficiency. In particular, when the system bandwidth was reduced after 200- or 500-m MMF transmission, the highest data rate of CAP-16 was achieved by Filter 2. Nonetheless, if CAP-32 was used, the highest data rate was accomplished by Filter 1 because symbol rate was low to meet the requirement of higher SNR. Since CAP-16 can achieve higher data rate compared to CAP-32, this work demonstrates that Filter 2 is a potential candidate for future high-capacity short-reach MMF transmission.

In this thesis, we using high spectra efficiency and cost-effective carrier-less amplitude-phase modulation supplemented by digital signal processing in short-reach optical interconnection and long-reach passive optical network. In short-reach optical interconnection system, using novel two-mode vertical cavity surface emitting laser to extend transmission length over 1005 m OM4 fiber, using feed-forward and decision feedback equalization to substitute for frequency domain equalization. Successfully demonstrate 56 Gbps for optical back-to-back and maintain 40 Gbps high capacity after 1005 m OM4 fiber transmission. In long-reach passive optical network system, we demonstrate 4-channel wavelength division multiplexing with 24 dBm high launch power to solve the power fading phenomenon after transmission to successfully extend 3 dB bandwidth. By using electro-absorption modulation and PIN detector supplemented by nonlinear Volterra filter compensation, achieve 224 Gbps high capacity after 60 km transmission and have 12 dB power budget per wavelength which can offer 16 optical network unit and each down-stream speed &;gt; 3 Gbps.
