Abstract:
Modern, rationally structured, hierarchical state administrative bureaucracies coincided with the centralization of government authority and expansion of European imperialist military systems in the 18th and 19th centuries. ‘Progressive reform across the globe’ explains that the characteristics and dimensions of the modern nation-state helped lay the foundations of modern public administration and social welfare systems in America and Western Europe. The American Progressive era and the progressive reforms that shaped European welfare states are discussed. Public administrators were compelled

Tick-borne rickettsioses are emerging as more important health problems throughout the world. Rickettsia are are arthropod-borne gram-negative coccobacilli bacteria and are obligate intracellular organisms that do not survive in artificial medium. This chapter examines two novels that portray the unsuccessful immigrant. Lê thi diem thúy's The Gangster We Are All Looking For and Madeleine Thien's Certainty feature protagonists from war-torn countries in Southeast Asia -- Vietnam and Borneo (later Malaysia) -- who start new lives in North America but who carry with them painful and traumatic memories that intrude upon their lives and threaten to overwhelm them. Both novels illustrate the precarity of everyday existence by revealing the ways in which war, death, and violence can lie just beneath a veneer of the ordinary and unremarkable. I

This chapter focuses on Richard Durham's pursuit of new creative challenges after writing The Greatest. Durham had long talked about writing a book about Aesop—the man whose morality tales known as fables carry his name. Another historical figure who had long drawn Durham's creative interest was a man named Hannibal Barca, also known as Hannibal the Great or Hannibal the Conqueror. However, neither the Aesop nor the Hannibal project materialized. By the late 1970s, Durham knew that the seeds of a growing black political movement were sprouting in his hometown. After the Revolutionary War, disillusioned by how quickly its promiscuous printing of Continental currency had led to hyperinflation, the U.S. government left it to private institutions such as state-chartered banks to carry on this artistic American tradition. Adorned with a vast variety of images, bank notes soon became the fledgling country’s primary currency. Wit

Abstract:
Theologies, no matter their designations, are public measures—they disclose as well as gauge the publics (near and far) on which they stand, sit, lie, or fall. Because publics shift and mingle, theologies require reimagining, relocating, and embracing fresh insights and energies. The insights and energies embraced in this work are in three clusters: spaces, bodies, and technologies. The spotlighted spaces are in Africa, Asia, Black America, the Caribbean, and Pasifika—beyond the eyes of mainline theologies; the privileged bodies have survived, with scars from empire and missionary positionings

Abstract:
The following analysis examines the trends and challenges that have come to define American Muslim religious leadership over the past forty years. By concentrating on personal narratives and institutional expectations of imams and chaplains, the objective is to present a picture of the new and evolving understanding of these leaders in the United States. Conceptually, this entails reimagining religious leadership and adapting the distinct but deeply interrelated notions of ‘ulama and clergy to an American Muslim context. Furthermore, although there is a direct, fluid, and organic connection be
