Abstract:
Employment relations literature is concerned with what is exchanged between the employer and the employee via an employment contract, a social contract or a psychological contract, with perceived mutual obligations (Rousseau, 1995; Capelli, 1999; Kalleberg, 2001). The psychological contract finds its foundation in the perceptions of the employee, that is, what the employee believe the employer has offered the employee in terms of their work relationship and the social contract refers to the expectations and obligations employers and employees have for their work and the employment relationship (Grahl, & Teague, 2009). The new employment contract differs from the old employment contract in that it is largely informal and even unwritten (Gilbert, 1996). This is in line with the new trend of business management as used by people-driven world-class organisations with a globalised focus (Gilbert, 1996). A research need exists to examine the potentially different or redundant effects of promises and expectations on the development of the obligations that are perceived to constitute the employment, the social and the psychological contracts (Martocchio, 2004; Shore, Tetrick, Taylor, Coyle-Shapiro, Liden, McLean-Parks, et al. 2004). The primary objective of this research is to investigate the relationship between the social- and the psychological contracts of private security employees (N=217) in the Vaal Triangle in terms of employability, job insecurity, job satisfaction, life satisfaction and intention to quit. This study is submitted in article form. The research method for each of the two articles consists of a brief literature review and an empirical study. Factor analyses, as well as Cronbach alpha coefficients were computed to assess the reliability of the research. Validity, Pearson product moment correlation coefficients as well as regression analysis were utilised to examine the relationship between the constructs employed in this research. The Employment Contract Scale (ECS) was also utilised as a research instrument, as the questionnaire-method proves to be largely reliable. Reliability analysis confirmed sufficient internal consistency of the subscales. The observed correlations were found to be comparable with the values reported in previous research by Edward and Karau (2007). By using multiple regression analysis, it was established that by investigating the relationship between the social- and the psychological contracts of private security employees (N=217) in the Vaal Triangle in terms of employability, job insecurity, job satisfaction, life satisfaction and intention to quit (the primary objective of this research) that job satisfaction and intention to quit predicted the social contract and that job satisfaction and life satisfaction predicted the psychological contract. No relationship however exists between employability, intention to quit and the psychological contract. Recommendations are advanced for future research.

Carstens, Almari. "Comparison of renal toxicities with LY231514 600mg/m² versus 500mg/m² in the treatment of stage III or -IV cervical cancer / A. Carstens." Thesis, Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/1600.

Abstract:
Cervical cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in females in South Africa and constitutes 16.47% of all cancers registered. LY231514, a new multi-targeted antifolate, is a potent in vitro inhibitor of thyrnidylate synthase (TS), dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) and glycinamide ribonucleotide formyl transferase (GARFT). Anti tumour activity has also been seen in vivo and preliminary results from Phase I1 clinical trials suggest that the drug has activity against a range of solid tumours. In this thesis, data from study H3E-MC-JMAM, sponsored by Eli Lilly & Company, was analysed and conclusions made upon results obtained. Twenty-four patients with advanced carcinoma of the cervix were treated with 600mg/m2 LY231514, and eleven patients with 500mg/m2. Patients who were entered into the study had advanced squamous cell carcinoma Stage 111 or -1V disease. The patients receiving 500mg/rn2 LY231514 were also given oral folic acid (5mg) supplementation for 2 days prior to treatment, on the day of treatment and also daily thereafter for 2 days. LY231514 was given as a 10-minute infusion every 21 days. A patient's treatment could be delayed or reduced according to the Common Toxicity Criteria results from the previous cycle. Twelve patients (50%) on the 600mg/m2 regime were withdrawn from the study due to decreased creatinine clearance thus preventing further administration of the drug. In an attempt to reduce the incidence of renal toxicity, but without compromising response, the dosage of LY231514 was reduced to 500mg/m2. On this new regime, only one patient out of 11 (9%) had to be discontinued from study due to a decreased creatinine clearance. The initiative to do an analysis between the two specific patient treatment groups came to me as a result of my involvement as clinical research associate in study H3E-MC-JMAM sponsored by Eli Lilly & Company. This study was conducted to evaluate difference in response between the two treatment groups, as well as to establish a safe dosage regime. During this study I made the observation that certain patients developed a decrease in their creatinine clearance mostly during the second and third treatment cycle. I came to the conclusion that LY231514 had an influence on the renal function of the patient as observed by an extended increase in their creatinine clearance and subsequent removal from study as study drug had to be withheld for an extended period of time. Patients thus could not receive optimal treatment for their disease as 90% of LY231514 is excreted via the kidneys and decreased renal function increased the risk of toxic accumulation of the drug. I decided to investigate the possible factors responsible for the decrease in renal function while placing special emphasis on the differences seen between the 500mg/m2 and 600mg/m2 treatment groups. Another motivational factor to do this analysis was the fact that this phenomenon were not seen in other studies conducted with LY231514, definitely not in such a way that patients had to be discontinued from study due to renal toxicity. Patients enrolled into study H3E-MC-JMAM signed an Informed Consent Document (Attachment I) before any study procedures were carried out. Eli Lilly & Company gave me permission (Attachment 11) to use the patient data to perform the analysis for this thesis. The two investigator sites participating in this study included Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town and National Hospital in Bloemfontein. At the time of submission, the study used for the data analysis in this thesis, study H3E-MC-JMAM sponsored by Eli Lilly and Company, had ongoing patients. Eli Lilly and Company will release their final study results after all patients have been discontinued and the final statistical analysis report has been generated.

Abstract:
AThe main target of the present study is to reconstruct the genesis of the esthetical ideas of the German art theoretician and writer Carl Ludwig Fernow (1763-1808), whose work and intellectual importance has been recently rediscovered and revalued by several researches. Carl Ludwig Fernow’s name is particularly related to the art discussion of the so called “Weimarian art friends”, the circle of amateurs of beauty who assembled very famous members and personalities such as Goethe, Schiller and Meyer. However, Fernow has always acted in the shadow of these main actors, trying to make him known as an author. Thus, quite a number of his publications and articles in German appeared in German well known revues such as “The Propylees”, “The new Mercury” or “The journal of fashion and luxury” have never been touched a large public, but still would merit a closer look, based on a reexamination of the role he played for the formation of the movement of art’s autonomy, in order to show his art theory, resuming his main ideas and concepts concerning the character, the ideal of beauty and the enthusiasm of the artiste, which he personally considered as the principal components of genuine art expression representing the key to real artistic creation

Abstract:
In 1761 an expedition funded by the King of Denmark embarks for Yemen. It comprises a philologist, a naturalist, an astronomer-cartographer, a physician, a draughtsman and a servant. They are expected to spend two or three years away and return with as much information as they can about the country, its current and past languages, including botanical and zoological terminology which could be linked to Biblical terms in Hebrew and Aramaic as well as detailed maps based on astronomical observations. Five months after reaching Yemen the philologist dies and so do shortly afterward the naturalist, the servant and the draughtsman which leads the two survivors to leave for India where the physician also passes away after a short while. Carsten Niebuhr, the astronomer-cartographer left by himself returns by way of the Persian Gulf, Mesopotamia and Turkey and continues to make the observations and measurements he was trained for but also takes upon himself to collect information in other fields that were to be covered by his deceased companions thereby becoming a proper ethnographer. Back in Denmark, Niebuhr publishes four volumes in German of his own work and another three in Latin from the work of the naturalist. Although he was belatedly elected a Foreign Associate of the French National Institute, for his ethnographic works mostly, including copies of cuneiform inscriptions in Persepolis, his astronomical and cartographic contributions were never really accessible to French scholars. This is one of the objectives of this research as well as reappraising the achievements of the Danish expedition to Arabia
