Turull i Crexells, Isabel. Carles Riba i la llengua literària durant el franquisme. Venice: Edizioni Ca' Foscari, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.30687/978-88-6969-309-0.

Abstract:
Carles Riba, one of the most relevant personalities in Catalan letters, not only as a poet but also as a linguist, has been considered a difficult writer. This book aims to examine how his theoretical preparation and his ideas in linguistics influenced his work in the particular case of some early stories in which he tries “uns utilíssims exercicis de simplicitat”. Carles Riba did not present his linguistic theories in a single text in a complete and articulated way but we can evaluate them in various papers he wrote and published up until his death in 1959. The first part of this work, after an introduction which sets the author in the context of European linguistics, is a review of the ideas that can be found in the collections of essays: Escolis i altres articles (1921), Els marges (1927), Per comprendre (1937), ... més els poemes (1957), and in a few other particularly interesting papers. This part focuses also on some of the controversies in which Carles Riba is involved as a linguist during the spanish dictatorship: especially his role on the publication of the second edition of Pompeu Fabra’s dictionary in 1954 and the consequences of the prologue he wrote for the volume. Joan Coromines considers an attack on the linguist Pompeu Fabra the negative comparison Riba proposes with the honnête homme: in our research we re-evaluate this consideration and analyse the historical and semantic value of this expression belonging to 17th-century French culture. The second part of this paper is a strictly linguistic analysis of three texts, chosen among Carles Riba’s works for children. The interest of those texts is in the author’s deliberate intent of using the most simple language, which enables us to determine what he considers the basic aspects of linguistic quality. Furthermore, the existence of different editions of those texts permits a philological analysis of those versions showing Carles Riba’s ‘simple’ language in three very representative moments, from the beginning of his career as a writer to the difficult situation during the dictatorship.

Olivieri, Antonio, ed. Il carteggio tra Luigi Schiaparelli e Carlo Cipolla (1894-1916). Florence: Firenze University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.36253/978-88-5518-012-2.

Full text
Abstract:
More than four hundred letters and postcards remain of the long correspondence between Carlo Cipolla, born in Verona and professor of modern history in Turin and then in Florence, and Luigi Schiaparelli, one of the students from his time in Turin. The majority of the letters came from the student, on the grounds of communicative asymmetry and conservative accidents. There are over twenty years of epistolary dialogue (1894-1916) in this publication, which now contributes significantly to the knowledge of Schiaparelli (the first modern scholar of diplomacy and palaeography in Italy), his years of apprenticeship and his career début, as well as on the vicissitudes of the last years of Cipolla’s career. Further insights are also gained on several aspects of the history of historical studies in Italy (and partly in Germany) in the decades between the 19th and 20th century, up to the World War I. The correspondence offers infinite, unpublished glimpses and lively accounts on people, events and discussions animating this intense season of Medieval Studies.

Malita, Laura, and Vanna Boffo, eds. Digital Storytelling for Employability. Florence: Firenze University Press, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.36253/978-88-6453-181-6.

Full text
Abstract:
This publication results from the research work undertaken by the partner institutions involved in the KA3-ICT Project Transversal Lifelong Learning Programme, Learn about finding jobs from digital storytelling(143429-2008-LLP-RO-KA3-KA3MP), with the main purpose of enhancing graduates' employability possibilities. For graduating students looking for a job it is perhaps harder than ever to meet success on the job market. They must use every tool they know to express themselves and to reflect their knowledge, competences and skills. The book aims to explain the main aspects of using digital storytelling as a method for employability, career development, reflection, assessment, consultancy, presentation and communication. Through digital storytelling, students begin to comprehend how all the elements of writing a narrative work together and how to manipulate them for the best effects in readers and viewers. Also, sharing and evaluating digital stories among peers is an excellent way to foster self-expression and tolerance and to create an engaged community of learners.

Abstract:
This book is a collection of some of the most interesting work by Maria Di Salvo compiled on the occasion of her sixty-fifth birthday. These articles reflect her intellectual curiosity, her clarity of exposition and the capacity to apply and amalgamate different methodologies and disciplines, blending them into a coherent whole despite the variety of topics and subjects of study. We have favoured the essays that are harder to get hold of, making selections that enable the identification of two essential groups: the philological and literary studies and those related to the relations between Russia and Italy. We trust that the choices made will offer an organic overview of the intellectual and academic career of Maria Di Salvo, including the latest 'new path' of research, that on punctuation in the Slavic languages, and while awaiting the imminent publication by Edizioni dell'Orso, of the part devoted to Russia in the memoirs of Filippo Balatri, the famous castrato sent by the Grand Duke of Tuscany to the Russian court at the end of the seventeenth century.

Nencioni, Francesca, ed. A Giuseppe Dessí. Lettere editoriali e altra corrispondenza. Florence: Firenze University Press, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.36253/978-88-6655-156-0.

Full text
Abstract:
This volume completes the valuable work of cataloguing carried out on the correspondence of Giuseppe Dessí conserved in the 'Alessandro Bonsanti' contemporary archive of Florence. The research, launched by Chiara Andrei in 2003 with the edition of the Corrispondenze familiari (Firenze University Press) and continued in 2009 by Francesca Nencioni with the publication of Lettere di amici e lettori (Firenze University Press), has its third result in this work by Francesca Nencioni, who has indexed the unpublished editorial and professional material, providing it with exhaustive references. The letters make it possible to trace a profile of the writer from his youth through to the 70s, illustrating the historic, political and cultural backdrop against which the events and activities of both his first and second profession developed. This casts light not only his complex professional career, but also on Dessí's collaboration with newspapers and journals, his relations with publishers and his contacts with the world of the mass media. Of particular importance is the appendix of unpublished letters, meticulously edited by Monica Graceffa, comprising the correspondence with two seminal journals of the 1930s and 40s «L'Orto» and «Primato». In the background are the figures of Bottai and Vecchietti and the complex coexistence between the intellectuals of the time and the regime.

Abstract:
Until the appearance of his Piano Sonata in 1946, and Sonata for Violoncello and Piano in 1948 Carter seemed to lack a distinctive voice. Aaron Copland, a close friend, taunted Carter about the “difficulty” of works that Carter had tried to make accessible, and did not mention Carter in an important 1948 article on emerging composers. Carter’s music at this time, however, was moving in new directions. The two sonatas for the first time deploy the distinctive formal and contrapuntal techniques of his mature style. Their idioms also reflect Carter’s realignment with ultra-modernism in his renewed friendship with Varèse and involvement with the publication and performance of Ives’ works. The appearance of metrical modulation in the Cello Sonata, an innovative approach to rhythmic organization, also sprang from Rudolf Kolisch’s study of tempo in Beethoven’s music.

Abstract:
The rise of mass education has led to mass research—quantity dominates quality. A ruthless institutional competition for status, plus academics pushing to get published in the ‘right’, career-enhancing journals, has led to the fetishization of journal outputs even when they are of little meaning or value to society. This situation is now endemic within the system of academic research and publication, and is strongly driven and sustained by academics themselves, even when they are unwilling to admit it. Academics, both individually and collectively, exercise considerable control over the content and nature of social science research, its scrutiny, assessment, and dissemination. They also have considerable control over the practices of various scientific institutions, including universities and their departments, funding bodies, conferences, and publications. Social science researchers underestimate and diminish their own responsibility for this state of affairs and sometimes prematurely adopt a victim position, blaming an impersonal system.

Abstract:
This publication shares perspectives built on teacher training, educational policies, the profession and other educational settings related to teaching, learning and research. From a collection of texts, it reveals walks through research and pedagogical experiences built in the school's daily life, which is an incarnated and reconfigured scenario in the lives of teachers who appear in publications as authors and/or as collaborators of search. It is an e-book that emerges from the debates held in the Thematic Group gathered at the Colloquium on Teaching and Diversity in Basic Education, organized by the Diverso Research Group, from the State University of Bahia – Uneb and which presents texts that dialogue with the current scenario of the Teaching Profession, considering the professionalization processes with a focus on the teaching career at its different levels and teaching modalities, in addition to enabling the broadening of the debate about the collective organization of the category in view of the current educational policies and teaching working conditions in a scenario in which the new political and sanitary agendas call the profession to destabilizations, uncertainties and ruptures.

Hitchcock, Tim. The Body in the Workhouse. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198748267.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
Hitchcock’s chapter examines the impassioned response represented in a couple of cheap publications to the death in 1732 of Mary Whistle, in a workhouse in the London parish of St Giles in the Fields, where she had been confined with a view to making her work in return for aid. The story became a focus for public opposition to the new workhouses, in the process bringing an end to the career of the man in charge of this one, Matthew Marryott. Hitchcock contextualizes publications mobilizing shock at these events by evoking the recent history of innovation in the parish’s government; by giving a sense of the character of the publications in which outrage was expressed; and through analysis of the values which informed the response.

Abstract:
This introductory chapter discusses the intertwined histories of novel and magazine publications and how certain authors, generally attributed to the “rise of the novel,” have made a significant shift from novel-writing to periodical culture. In particular, the chapter examines the career of Charles Brockden Brown as he draws influences from other writers during the time while also developing an editorial function which he would work to define in his last fictions and in his periodical work of his final years. This chapter also explores the writings of a particular author whom Brown has read—Hannah Webster Foster, whose career witnesses an even more abrupt turn away from the novel.

Van Raalte, Theodore. Antoine de Chandieu. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190882181.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The first study in any language dedicated to the influential theological publications of Antoine de Chandieu begins by introducing us to the memory of Chandieu as it was at Theodore Beza’s death. Poets in Geneva mourned the end of an era of star theologians by reminiscing about Geneva’s Reformed triumvirate of gold, silver, and bronze: gold represented Calvin (d. 1564); silver Chandieu (d. 1591); and bronze Beza (d. 1605). The present work sets Chandieu within the context of Reformed theology in Geneva, the wider history of scholastic method in the Swiss cantons, and the gripping social and political milieus. The book shows why Chandieu developed a very elaborate form of the medieval quaestio disputata and made liberal use of hypothetical syllogisms. Chandieu was far from a mere ivory-tower theologian: as a member of French nobility in possession of many estates in France, he and his family acutely experienced the misery and triumph of the French Huguenots during the Wars of Religion. Connected to royalty from at least the beginning of his career, Chandieu later served the future Henry IV as personal military chaplain and cryptographer. His writings range from religious poetry (put to music by others in his own lifetime) to carefully crafted disputations that saw publication in his posthumous Opera Theologica in five editions between 1592 and 1620. The book argues that Chandieu utilized scholastic method in theology for the sake of clarity of argument, rootedness in Scripture, and certainty of faith.

Full text
Abstract:
Alexandre Matheron (1926–2020) worked and wrote substantially on the 17th century philosopher Benedict de Spinoza beginning with the publication of his influential 1969 masterpiece Individu et communauté chez Spinoza. Widely considered one of the most important and original interpreters of Spinoza’s philosophy in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, but whose work was rarely translated into English, the 20 essays gathered here span the entirety of Matheron’s prolific career and present to the Anglophone the first collection of its kind outside of France. From texts on Spinoza’s epistemology and metaphysics to his signature interpretation of Spinoza’s political philosophy, Matheron’s work touches on every imaginable theme in the Spinozist corpus from Spinoza’s views on sexuality to his relationship to his predecessors, contemporaries, and inheritors such as Aquinas, Hobbes, Machiavelli, and Rousseau to Spinoza’s latent communism and importance for the development of Spinozist Marxism in France. Complete with a substantial interview conducted by two of Matheron’s best known students, Laurent Bove and Pierre-François Moreau, and a comprehensive bibliography of Matheron’s publications, this is a crucial collection for anyone seeking to understand 20th-century continental Spinozism. Whether it be the established scholar looking for translations of difficult to find essays or the advanced undergraduate or graduate student in search of reliable secondary literature on Spinoza, this volume is the perfect introduction to Matheron’s rigorous, masterful, and original interpretation of Spinoza’s philosophy.
