OBJECTIVE: Caries is a multifactorial infectious disease and the main etiological agent is the bacteria Streptococcus mutans due to its virulence factors, which enable the adherence to dental enamel and favours the formation of dental biofilm through the production of extracellular polysaccharides. The transmission of S. mutans can occur between people, often within families. The present study aimed to evaluate the intrafamily genetic pattern of S. mutans through partial sequencing of the gene that encodes the glucosyltransferase β (gtfB) enzyme.METHODS: We previously analyzed saliva samples f

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses three families of theoretical mechanisms—homophily, proximity (physical and electronic), and social support—that have been identified by social scientists as important motivations for why we create, maintain, dissolve, and reconstitute our communication networks. While much of this research is conducted in nonorganizational settings, this chapter focuses on the theory and research that we consider to be most germane to communication and other organizational networks. Several researchers have attempted to explain communication networks on the basis of homophily, that is, the selection of others who are similar. Brass (1995a, p. 51) notes that “similarity is thought to ease communication, increase predictability of behavior, and foster trust and reciprocity.” Homophily has been studied on the basis of similarity in age, gender, education, prestige, social class, tenure, and occupation (Carley, 1991; Coleman, 1957; Ibarra, 1993b, 1995; Laumann, 1966; Marsden, 1988; McPherson & Smith-Lovin, 1987). Several lines of reasoning provide support for the homophily hypothesis. These fall into two general categories: the similarity-attraction hypothesis (Byrne, 1971) and the theory of self-categorization (Turner, 1987). The similarity-attraction hypothesis is exemplified in the work of Heider (1958) who posited that homophily reduces the psychological discomfort that may arise from cognitive or emotional inconsistency. Similarly, Sherif (1958) suggested that individuals were more likely to select similar others because by doing so they reduce the potential areas of conflict in the relationship. The theory of self-categorization (Turner & Oakes, 1986) suggests that individuals define their social identity through a process of self-categorization during which they classify themselves and others using categories such as age, race, gender. Schachter (1959) argued that similarity provided individuals with a basis for legitimizing their own social identity. The manner in which individuals categorize themselves influences the extent to which they associate with others who are seen as falling into the same category. It is easy to see that the theoretical mechanism by which homophily influences the likelihood of a communication relation is based on the similarity among specific attributes of the actors.

This chapter describes how Clarke’s fascination with the oceans predates his skin diving career, as early stories convey that humans are drawn to and inspired by the sea, which played a key role in human development. Later stories draw upon Clarke’s underwater experiences to rapturously describe undersea wonders; he occasionally argues that undersea creatures like dolphins and squids may be developing human-like intelligence; and he perceives similarities between life in the seas and life in space. In Clarke’s major novels about the oceans, the former astronaut of The Deep Range (1957) finds fulfillment in protecting Earth’s whales and other sea creatures, but The Ghost from the Grand Banks (1991) instead emphasizes how humans may never be able to fully understand, or master, this strange environment.

This technique involves grouping words that reveal semantic similarity to each other and results indicate that considerations around soft and hard skills in tourism have been different over time. In short, it might be said that it is hard skills that lead people to job interviews, but it is soft skills that allow them to be recruited for employment. Hence, it is the combination of the two skill types that enables people to have a job in the tourism industry, manage a career, and contribute to the differentiation of tourism companies in the tourism global marketplace that tends to be increasingly competitive.

Full text
Abstract:
For Plato, the model of the leader as shepherd suggests protectiveness and care. But he also realizes that it could be used to make the opposite point: the leader only appears to protect the flock; his ulterior motive is to exploit them for profit. As a result, the model divides into two: the good shepherd, who cares only for the flock, and the bad one, who seeks to exploit them, like a tyrant. Another problem is that the model elevates the leader to the level of a higher species, who merely shouts commands, quite unlike the teacher model described in the previous two chapters. Consequently, Plato later abandons the shepherd in the Statesman. The second part considers an example of the ‘bad’ shepherd, Travis Kalanick, CEO of Uber Taxis, whose attitude to his drivers shows similarities with the shepherd who professes to care for his flock, but merely seeks to exploit them.

This chapter considers the legal and ethical aspects under which we work as dental professionals. In an increasingly litigious society, it is important to be aware of the processes that are involved with complaints and recourse to the law and our Regulator. This chapter briefly outlines the differences and also similarities between those legal processes and those of the General Dental Council. The processes that are involved in fitness to practise are also discussed, and the different types of indemnity are briefly considered. Important changes to the law concerning consent are outlined, and how these might affect how and when treatment is provided to an individual. Some simple ethical principles to consider are outlined, and the reader should perhaps develop these concepts further throughout their careers in dentistry.

Abstract:
This chapter illustrates the similarities that exist between the data from Ugarit and the next principal literary corpus, that to be found in the Hebrew Bible. The emphasis is not on the theology or the theological politics of the two corpora, but on their literary qualities. It stresses two aspects of the Ugaritic‐Hebrew parallels: first, the points of resemblance between the two corpora in the aesthetics of poetic structure and imagery; and, second, the evolution visible in the Hebrew Bible in the areas of literary genre, subject matter, and life setting of individual poems or collections of poems. The perspective is not that of a biblical scholar, but that of someone who has spent much of his career attempting to elucidate Ugaritic texts from the epigraphic and philological perspectives.

Abstract:
In the United States, there are over one million military spouses. Frequent geographical relocations, the psychological stress and anxiety associated with spousal deployments, and supporting their children as the only parent while their active duty spouse is away leave military spouses disproportionately accountable for all family obligations. Ultimately, these inequities create barriers for military spouses and their employment and educational pursuits. Despite similarities in lifestyle to active duty service members, military spouses are not categorized as an at-risk population and have not been studied in depth. This chapter utilized the source, survey, synthesize method to address the literature gap surrounding the barriers to military spouse education and employment. Findings from the existing literature were synthesized to present the key themes for studies that investigated the military culture, barriers to military spouses' pursuits of higher education, employment, and career advancement and earnings.

A graph-based method is proposed for inferring similarities among companies from their affiliations in the context of expenditure financial transactions in the Brazilian Federal Government. There are trusted and untrusted companies. We performed a basic cluster analysis in the companies network to verify whether clusters (connected components) are discriminative concerning companies trustworthiness. Results show evidences that this is true, reinforcing the following hypotheses: (1) there are suppliers associations, which evidences the formation of cartels; and (2) public agencies and agents pl

In Steam Turbines, under low flow conditions, the flow structure on the long last stage blades is complex. The rotor blades create outward radial flow. Recirculations are setup near the tip in the gap between the fixed and moving blades, and near the hub downstream of the moving blade. The blade carries negative loading and encounters gross flow separations. In this environment, fluctuations in pressure are detected rotating at about half of the rotor speed. Some similarities exist with rotating stall, as found in compressors. In the validation of a new blade design, checks are therefore inclu
