Abstract:
This chapter examines the legal position and economic role of slaves in Punic Carthage. First, through an examination of the evidence of Graeco-Roman and Punic sources, it shows that Finley was mistaken to dismiss Carthage as relying on non-slave dependants and that slavery was an important institution at Carthage. Second, this chapter looks at the evidence for large-scale exploitation of slave labour in Carthage’s large agricultural hinterland and the scale of slave ownership among the Carthaginian aristocracy. It ends by showing how the Romans drew on the technical expertise of Carthaginian

This chapter first lays out how we understand Christianity, contemporary ways of exploring ancient religion, and how contemporary studies of religious movements can help us to understand ancient religion; it also explores the social, economic, historical, archaeological, or other cultural forces that intersect with and explain the many facets of religious experience. It further discusses the provenance of Christianity in Roman Carthage; how Christianity started as a very small sect and became a dominant religion in a short period of time; Stark’s thesis about methods of and reasons for convers

Abstract:
This book traces the formation of the archaeological site of Carthage and how it re-emerged in the minds of European antiquarians and travellers in the early modern world. For almost 1,600 years the ancient city sat on the north coast of Africa, dominating the central Mediterranean until its fall in 698 CE.
