It is increasingly recognised that cartography is a contested practice, embedded within particular sets of power relations, and that maps are bound up with the production and reproduction of social life. The author begins by emphasising the importance of these issues for considering how the city has been mapped and represented through cartographic schemes, and draws on debates around the power and politics of mapping, and contentions that maps are ‘preeminently a language of power, not of protest’.
Abstract. The links between art and cartography are deep, and integrate the knowledge generated by the combination of elements that involve the concepts of territory, culture, history, geography and power. The approximation of art and cartography occurs in the aesthetic and visual sense and invites us to unravel and reflect on its role in the spectrum of spatial representations. In schools, the artworks that involve cartographic representations offer us an opportunity to understand young people's relationships with local and global spaces, and the meaning

Abstract. Human communication is notable both for its precision and flexibility (Krauss, 2002). By following a mutually shared set of signs and rules, meaning can be conveyed from one entity to another. In doing so, human communication allows to formulate an “unlimited number of meaningful novel messages that are not tied to the immediate present” (Krauss, 2002, p.1). Human language in particular allows to refer to and think about both concrete objects and abstractions, past events and experiences, remote both in space and time, or which exist only in the

Abstract The Soviet military mapping project was the most comprehensive cartographic endeavour of the twentieth century. The resulting maps have been commercially available to the West since at least 1993, when a Latvian business first offered Soviet plans of Western cities for sale at the 16th International Cartographic Conference in Cologne, Germany. Covering the globe at a range of scales, Soviet military maps provide a fascinating – if disconcerting – view of familiar territory with a striking aesthetic. But they also provide a substantial untapped geospatial resource, often with an unpara

The article presents the theoretical reasoning and the practical value of such an integrative teaching method as intellectual-graphic visualization, which corresponds to the modern method of informatization of the society. The method is based on Metadidactics Theory, Visualization and Infographics Theory, and uses the fundamental cartographic approach to modeling spatially distributed information. Essentially, it is the reasoning for the second language use, i.e. the language of graphication of information, in the learning process.

Abstract The 10/40 Window map is used by evangelical missionary societies to promote mission in Northern Africa, the Middle East and South East Asia. It has been widely popular among Christians worldwide, but has also suffered sustained criticism. The map itself, however, has received no scholarly attention. This article investigates the 10/40 Window map through the lens of the concept of territoriality. Using insights from the field of critical cartography, it argues that the map is pivotal in directing missionary zeal, but that in turn it has also reshaped missionary thinking. This is so bec

This paper offers a comprehensive discussion of the cardinal numeral system of Italian Sign Language. At the lexical level, we present the different formational strategies used to generate cardinal numerals and we provide evidence that in the younger generations of signers, the signonehas lost the function of indefinite determiner and is now used as a cardinal only. At the syntactic level, we show that the attested variation in the ordering between the cardinal and the noun is in part due to definiteness and contrastive focus. We account for this variation within the cartographic approach to s

This work considers the problem of extracting geodata from natural language texts and visualizing it in a form convenient for perception and subsequent analysis. The information technology for extracting geodata from texts in natural language and building a cartographic interface based on them on the basis of ready-made geoservices is proposed. Syntactic, morphological and semantic analysis methods were used to extract toponyms from texts. For implementation of geocoding and visualization procedures the possibilities of modern web-geoservices were used.

The article is devoted to current theoretical issues of modern cartography. The paper puts forward the concept of metacartography, which laid as the foundation for the Theory of Cartography as a science. The author of this concept is the outstanding Georgian cartographer Alexander Aslanikashvili, who is the founder of the theory of cartography. This concept, which in a new way comprehended the main categories of cartography (the subject of cognition of science, the method of studying a certain side of reality and language) by means of which cartography examines its subject, made it possible to
