Fichou, Jean-Christophe. Brest, 1987. http://www.theses.fr/1987BRES1004.

Full text
Abstract:
Nautical charts which are traditionally presented to the various navigators are based on the cumulative display of diverse facts which are often result in a visual obstruction and undeniable reading difficulties. It is particulary obvious for yachtmen who, in their great majority, do not have the needful nautical knowledge for a good use of the documents suggested to them. This is the reason why it seems interesting to search particular methods to work out a pleasure craft chart specifically designed for yachting; it is all the more than 600 000 small-crafts of that type which scour the french seashore today. In that purpose, it is at first absolutely necessary to know perfectly the conventional solutions which are used by the national hydrographic services. They generally consist in instituttions in charge of the conception and making of nautical charts, taking no account, however of answering amateur sailors particular needs. Then one has to know what is to be understood by the word "yachting" and to try to define the criteria approriate for that type of sailing and also know the particularities of the ships in question and the knowledges of the sailors who use them. After these investigations, it is easier to be concerned with questions such as the visual perception and optimum conditions of the use of the yachting chart by the yachtmen. Therefore it appears judicious to attempt to work out on new and different research basis a document intented to yachtmen considering their needs, their ship and their way of navigation fundamentally different from professional sailor's one

This creative personal essay examines the long-term effects of surviving a friend's adolescent suicide. The piece begins with the story of the narrator's suicide loss, and subsequently follows her on a quest to understand her grief. She explores cultural perceptions of suicide in America, such as the dialogue around suicide, suicide prevention objectives, the suicide survivor experience, suicide tourism, and media responses to suicide--all reflecting her relationship to the subject. In the end, the narrator returns to the place where her quest began, carrying the wisdom she has gleaned from her inquiries.

Abstract:
Significant characteristic of any VLSI design circuit is its power, reliability, operating frequency and implementation cost. Dynamic CMOS designs provide high operating speeds compared to static CMOS designs combined with low silicon area requirement. This thesis describes the design and the optimization of high performance carry select adder. Previous researchers believed that existing CSA designs has reached theoretical speed bound. But, only a considerable portion of hardware resources of traditional adders are used in worst case scenario. Based on this observation our proposed design will improve on theoretical limit. The major scope of this proposed design is to increase the speed of carry generation between intermediate blocks of Carry select Adder (CSA) by introducing fast multiple clock Domino Manchester carry chain (MCC) that generates carry outputs. This design technique will have some advantages compared to pre-existing implementations in operating speed and power delay product. Simulation has been done using GPDK (Generic Process Design Kits) technology using cadence virtuoso. Thus the proposed technique provides advantages over pre-existing techniques in terms of operating speed.

Abstract:
This thesis is an investigation into the work of michel leiris, a work the autor himself sees as an unfinished selfportrait. The thesis adopts neither a historical nor a merelly literary approach, but is based on categories of a semiologic-deconstructionist kind. Since all leiris' work is an attempt at autobiographic reconstruction, an attempt which he sees as bound to failure, the thesis attaches a central role to the analysis of writing and contents. Memory, in fact, makes writing possible but, at the same time, stands as the limit of autobiography. Writing is seen as a formal apparatus where the event is lost, as leveling of all psychical stages, thus as a loss of identity. Paradoxically the end of self-portrait is realized in its incompleteness. Together with the interwined categories of time-memory-autobiography, the thesis stresses freudian unheimliche, which looms in his work in a disquieting and unresolved fashion. Conscience is alwais veiled, representation of the self and the world is never granted; the act of writing is alwais submitted to chance, to what has not surfaced yet, but which should be unveiled. Leiris is well aware of this and he feels guilty. He acknowledges responsability, although he tries to delay its effects. The confession gains value trough delay and reticence

Abstract:
This thesis is engaged with a critical exploration of, and creative response to, family archives. Presented in two parts, the thesis is first a work of fiction, a novel, which was initially inspired by my own Danish family history during the Second World War, but soon found a life of its own. Set in a small provincial town in Jutland, the novel explores themes of loss and connection, as well as those of loneliness and compromise. The second part is an interrogation of the stories we carry: stories from history, stories from the family archive and stories conjured up from the imagination alone. In the Holmboe family archive, I discovered fortytwo volumes of Christian Holmboe's journals and among them the list of the dead in the family's home town of Horsens in early September 1943. Ebbe Holmboe, my great-uncle, was murdered at the age of twenty-three in a Nazi concentration camp. Signs in this Danish archive led me to a diverse selection of accounts written across Europe during and after the Second World War and included the archival research, journals and creative responses of Élisabeth Gille (the daughter of Irene Némirovsky), Georges Perec and Jacqueline Mesnil- Amar among others. Their unique works of memoir, documentary journal and imagined biography confront the annihilation of family during war and seek to articulate the aftermath that endures far beyond the events themselves. The thesis ends with a reflection on the prose fiction of W.G. Sebald and Anne Michaels, two novelists who show how imagined stories can fill the silences left by history and create new memories.

Abstract:

Carry in/ Carry out (CICO) policies have been used in front-country parks for a long time. According to the National Park Service (2013), “trash free parks” are ones that implement carry in and carry out policies; the manager of a park removes all or most of the garbage cans in hope of having park patrons carry out the refuse that they generate and dispose of it at home. Managers use this policy as a way to reduce the costs associated with hauling trash out of the park, and to deter patrons from leaving garbage in the park. Reducing the amount of trash clean up also gives the park staff the ability to focus on other operational needs and park projects. This study looks at the effectiveness of carry in/ carry out policies in federal parks, state parks, and NGO-managed lands by interviewing sixteen managers (n=16) of these areas in the Northeast. This exploratory study used grounded theory. Two strategies were used to collect data (online survey and phone interviews). Data was analyzed by coding. Results suggest that the number one barrier for getting visitors to comply with CICO policies is a lack of awareness about littering. The most common benefit for using a CICO system is to save money, followed by creating public awareness about the items brought into parks. This study found that 67% of NGO managers and 75% of federal managers think that CICO is an effective policy; state park managers were mixed on whether CICO policies are in fact effective. The one thing that federal, state, and NGO agencies agree on is that there is always litter to be picked up by staff or volunteers. The amount of that litter varied from park to park, and there does not seem to be one strategy that works for everyone.

This is a product development project which has developed a prototype in order to facilitate for people using mobility devices when they want to buy a larger quantity of groceries. The prototype is a shopping cart composed with the upper part of a walker.Today there are many different types of mobility devices used by elderly and people with physical impairment. According to Myndigheten för samhällsskydd och beredskap (MSB) are accidental falls the most common cause of accidents in Sweden. This project has been using Computer Aided Design (CAD) as a tool to create a visual image of the prototype. The advantage of this is to modify the functionality and performance of the prototype on the computer before the modification takes place in the real model. Using human manikins, the CAD model was rendered in natural surroundings to get as true a picture as possible. The prototype is adjustable, why various anthropometric measurements were used to fit to the individual, but not less than the 40th percentile for women, corresponding to a height of 161 cm.The project has resulted in a CAD model and a functional prototype. The prototype has been tested by a user group at Alla Hjärtans Hus (AHH) and received positive feedback. The prototype also received constructive criticism from users, so suggestions can be applied. Suggestions for further development of the prototype have been developed. The prototype needs to be modified and components must be added before it can be used in grocery retailers.

Abstract:

Bertolini, Lorenzo. "Trading foreign exchange carry portfolios." Thesis, City University London, 2011. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/1090/.

Full text
Abstract:
Foreign exchange carry trades involve buying high yielding currencies while selling low yielding currencies. Contrary to the implications of the uncovered interest parity condition, carry trades have generated consistent profits in the past decades. As foreign exchange has gained increased relevance as an asset class in its own, the carry trade emerged as a major driver of foreign exchange market turnover. Given the widespread use and ease of implementation of carry strategies, active currency managers should be evaluated relative to a benchmark which incorporates a proxy for carry trade returns. Within this thesis we study the profitability of various carry portfolio strategies on a very recent data set ranging from the 1st of January 1999 to the 5th of March 2010. Within three distinct empirical chapters we analyse whether different asset allocation, market-timing and money management methodologies have the potential to improve the performance of a simple carry portfolio, such as the one implemented by the Currency Harvest exchange traded fund by Deutsche Bank. Three main findings emerge from our investigation on carry trade portfolios. First, we find that a simple carry trade proxy is difficult to outperform with asset allocation and market-timing techniques. Nevertheless, we would not conclude that professional currency managers should cease to implement carry strategies, since they can add value to the investment process by successfully addressing the issue of optimal leveraging for carry trades. Second, we find that the portfolio flows of carry traders do uncover pockets of predictability in the FX market. Strategies which aim at front-running the trades of carry strategies, do generate positive returns with low correlations to traditional carry trade strategies and therefore offer good diversification vehicles for carry portfolios. Lastly, we find that while profitable market-timing seems feasible on historical backtests, the results are strongly dependent on the correctly timing the credit crisis. Thus, we note that our results are affected by a lookback bias. We posit that before the credit crisis, portfolio managers would not have had the foresight to select the correct market-timing indicators. We thus advocate a broad diversification of risk indicators for carry trade timing.

Abstract:
The average time necessary to add numbers by local parallel computation is directly related to the length of the longest carry propagation chain in the sum. The mean length of longest carry propagation chain when adding two independent uniform random n bit numbers is a well studied topic, and useful approximations as well as an exact expression for this value have been found. My thesis searches for similar formulas for mean length of the longest carry propagation chain in sums that arise when a random n-digit number is multiplied by a number of the form 1 + 2d. Letting Cn, d represent the desired mean, my thesis details how to find formulas for Cn,d using probability, generating functions and linear algebra arguments. I also find bounds on Cn,d to prove that Cn,d = log2 n + O(1), and show work towards finding an even more exact approximation for Cn,d.

CAPES
Conversational markers are signs that tie text as a structure of interpersonal interaction and ensure the continued development of dialogue, often operating as discursive deists that punctuate the conversational text. They are mostly devoid of semantic content and syntactic role, and irrelevant in the interpretation of the topic; However, are essential and recurrent in the construction of oral discourse. However, this resource that is usually used in orality has become a constant in the textual productions, written, developed by students of the ninth grade of a public school in Puxinanã / PB. For this reason, the present research has the general objective to investigate the lexical use practices of these students in argumentative texts in relation to the use of conversational markers. And in the specific plan, our objective is to elaborate didactic strategies to ameliorate the use of these linguistic resources in texts that require the formal use of the language, like the argumentative letter. In order to guide this action research we consider the following hypothesis: in a public school, in the municipality of Puxinanã-PB, conversational markers are used in texts at random because students do not realize that such records are inadequate for the practice of formal texts. In order to materialize this study we use the methodology of the didactic sequence of Dolz and Schneuwly (2004) and use the following procedures: initial reflection on the genre "argumentative letter"; An initial production proposal; Identification of the types of conversational markers used in students' texts; Intervention proposal through three modules to ease the use of these records; Final production proposal and analysis of results. As a theoretical support to guide this research we take into account the studies of the Portuguese Language NCP (1997), the conceptions about the use of the language of Urbano (1999), Bortoni-Ricardo (2004), Marcuschi (2007), among others. Analysis of this practice observed that the student makes use of conversational markers in a sharp way in his text, sometimes influenced by the media and in others randomly, which was minimized after the execution of this didactic sequence.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The mining sector is a fundamental part of the Peruvian economy, as well as an important part of the country's history. The sector has maintained a high expectation of growth that is reflected in the results of recent years, which has also resulted in a consistent growth in the purchase of equipment that supports this industry. Mining operations and projects are mostly executed in the highlands of the country, facing social conflicts that have resulted in higher costs and even paralyzing the development of some important projects. It is essential that companies linked to the sector improve their competitiveness by offering lower costs, working towards environmental sustainability and capacity to adapt to changes. This thesis has developed the Strategic Plan for Carte Mining Perú following the sequential model proposed by D’Alessio (2015). The company is constituted as a regional office of the Mining division of the Carte group having its headquarters in Glasgow, Scotland. The headquarters in Perú were founded in 1986, having as main activities the design, manufacture and provision of support services for the machinery used in the mining and mineral processing sector. The main opportunities is represented by the greenfield and brownfield type mining projects such as the expansion of Santa María, the expansion of Toquepala, Quellaveco, Mina Justa, Quecher Main, San Rafael and Toromocho. The strategies of the plan and objectives are aimed at accomplishing the vision of Carte Mining Perú by 2029: to be the leading company in the marketing of capital goods and services for mining. Sales have had a positive evolution; however, EBITDA has been decreasing mainly due to the new product lines that are being introduced in the market. The methodology used for strategic planning led to an external and internal analysis of the company, and long and short-term objectives towards achieving the vision, and the final chapter presents the guidelines for implementation, as well as the policies, resources and recommendations to specify the process.

Abstract:
Data shows that elderly people are more likely to live alone than younger people, meanwhile the percentage of elderly people with disabilities increases significantly with age. These trends and facts bring a number of issues. One of these we would like to solve is that it is difficult and dangerous for them to lift the heavy loads through ladder. Sometimes it is also very dangerous for normal people, not to mention to people with reduced mobility. In order to solve these issues and reduce the possibility of accident, we have come up with a new ladder used for attics that can transport the heavy loads automatically. As transmission part we use a rack and pinion mechanism to achieve a   smooth transport and a ratchet mechanism for stopper to avoid sudden accident drops.  The ladder also can be hidden when not using it.

This report will consist on the developing of a “shopping cart”, adapted to some requirements that our client has, those requirements are special because she has the disability of reuma. It will be a big challenge, because it must be a competitive shopping cart but it also has to carry out the specific needs of our client.  We need to follow these steps in order to obtain a successful product: First of all we need to study the shopping carts market. We must analyze all the products involved in that market and discover the best qualities of each one. Of course, we need to know the illness of our client, it will be very important to understand what she need and what we have to improve, so that it will be good to work together, to know her common days, and so on. Afterwards, we start the real work. We are going to analyze and develop characteristics such as use, functions, parts of the shopping cart, how to fix the problem of the movement, reducing unnecessary movements,… Finally, we will obtain a competitive shopping cart in the market, to be able to use by a big range of people, especially by people with difficulties in their common days and with an ergonomic adapted to the requirements and of course, with a well design.

Cary, Karri Lee. "Willow resilience on Yellowstone's Northern Elk Winter Range a function of environmental gradients /." Thesis, Montana State University, 2005. http://etd.lib.montana.edu/etd/2005/cary/CaryK0505.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Willow, a deciduous, woody shrub, is a characteristic and often dominant riparian species (Amlin and Rood 2002) that has been unable to successfully regenerate throughout much of its western range, and Yellowstone National Park (YNP) is no exception (Singer et al. 1994, NRC 2002a). The primary objective of this study was to understand growth and maintenance of established willow stands as a community and as individual species following winter browse. These were based on the premises that (1) different levels of herbivory produce varying levels of compensatory growth (Brookshire et al. 2002), (2) different channel types provide diverse hydrologic conditions for vegetation establishment and maintenance (Patten 1998, Castelli et al. 2000), (3) riparian biodiversity is a function of fluvial dynamics and is increased by the degree of hydrologic connectivity of the system (Amoros and Bornette 2002), and (4) the possibility of willow species being either generalist (showing water source shifts) or specialist (availability doesn't influence water source) (Dawson and Ehleringer 1991, Busch et al. 1992, Schwinning and Ehleringer 2001). Site selection and design, and sampling scheme were designed to evaluate biophysical gradients both within and between sites over time. Gradients of biophysical parameters were quantified throughout the growing season. Regressions were used to identify relationships among physical and biological parameters or characteristics. Vegetative communities were compared using Sorenson's similarity index. Ecosystem functions that influence willow presence on the Northern Range include establishment, browse pressure, and maintenance and resilience or their ability to recover. Establishment of willow was a result of availability of their preferred water source while winter decline was a function of location and herbivore preferential selection. Maintenance and resilience were dominated by soil water use in the early season and groundwater use later in the season but with distinct variations between hydrologic systems. Nutrient availability and hyporheic connectivity, essential to dispersing those nutrients among the plant communities, also may influence growth and resilience of willow plants. However, excess or even "acceptable" levels of only one of the physical factors was not enough alone to control dominant plant growth and response to herbivory.

Li, Yating. "Currency crash risk in the carry trade." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2017. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/8393/.

Abstract:
This thesis provides a systematic study of currency crash risk and funding liquidity risk in carry trade strategy in the foreign exchange (FX) market. Carry trade, which involves longing currencies with high interest rate and shorting currencies with low interest rate, is a popular currency trading strategy in the FX market for obtaining annualized excess return as high as 12%. This thesis studies exchange rates of 9 currencies over 13 years from a microstructure perspective. We identify a global skewness factor and use it to measure the currency crash risk. Applying a portfolio approach in cross-sectional asset pricing, we find that global skewness factor explains more than 80% of carry trade excess returns. On the other hand, funding liquidity is effective in predicting the future currency crash risk. Funding liquidity explains more than 70% of carry trade excess returns. We also use the coefficient of price impact from customer order flows to measure the liquidity, which reveals heterogeneous information content possessed by different types of customers. We find that the order flow implied liquidity risk factor can explain a fraction of carry trade excess returns but with small risk premium on quarterly basis. We provide empirical evidence to show that the excess return and crash risk in carry trade is endogenous; i.e., the crash risk premium is inherent in carry trade process. As the natural condition widely affects all investors, we argue that funding constraints are effective in explaining the excess returns of carry trade. When capital moves smoothly in a liquid condition and investor have sufficient funding supply, carry trade is prosperous in the FX market. When investors hit their funding constraints, market-wide liquidity drop, which force the carry trade positions diminishing. The exchange rates respond as that the low interest rate currencies appreciate and high interest rate currencies depreciate, which exacerbates currency crash risk and induces large loss to carry traders. Our cross-sectional analysis provides empirical evidence to show that funding constraints helps to explain the forward premium puzzle and push the exchange rate shift back to the direction the UIP expects.

Abstract:
The carrying of concealed weapons for protection, specifically handguns, is a widely debated topic. This is especially true on college campuses following highly publicized mass shooting events. Researching students’ projected carrying behavior if legal on campus is important because it sheds light on the extent to which a concealed carry policy would be utilized in the university context, which has implications for public safety as well as student perceptions of safety. The scholarly literature indicates that White, Southern males who own guns are most likely to favor concealed carry policies. Donald Black’s theory of self-help (1983) and the collective security hypothesis (1987) frame this investigation by exploring whether students who feel that local law enforcement is ill equipped to protect them are more likely to say that they would utilize a concealed carry policy on campus as a measure of self-protection. Analyzing survey data from a Midwestern university In the Spring of 2009 with logistic regression, it is clear that the majority of students sampled are not in favor of a policy for carrying concealed firearms onto campus. As expected males and gun owners are significantly more likely to say they would carry concealed if legal. The interaction between gender and trust in law enforcement is also significant, indicating that males are more likely to say they would carry on campus relative to females as their level of confidence in law enforcement decreases. Overall, this research does not support Donald Black’s theory of self-help and the collective security hypothesis. In order to better test the theory of self-help and the collective security hypothesis, additional measures of the key variables are warranted in future research. In addition conducting a survey on projected carrying behavior with a nationally representative sample would aid understanding as to how the broader population of students in The United States would feel and behave if concealed carry were legal on their campus. Further investigation exploring why gender and law enforcement interact in predicting projected carry behavior is warranted.

Abstract:
The digital revolution is radically changing the way we produce, access and use information. The amount of information available on an ever evolving World Wide Web is questioning the very nature of a document as a vector for information, especially in its digital form. As part of this mutation, integrated semantic tools must be developed to address three essential aspects of the question: indexing documents, browsing through large collections, and producing those documents. Such tools must be based on a deep understanding of the intricate relation between the physical form of a document and the informative content it carries, which is bound to the context in which they appear. Based on those assertions, we propose a study of the geographical map in the multi-modal document. The goal is to define a theoretically and technically consistent approach to exploiting thematic maps in the geographical documents. We propose an general overview of the context of our study, namely the geographic information and the composite document. We then develop a content model for the thematic map, based on a semiological approach. We finally present a software framework implementing the various concepts and models that have been discussed

Abstract:
What role does cartographic imagination play in the creative process ? This study is part of a field of research that, for nearly thirty years, accompanies the numerous and regular uses of maps in the contemporary visual arts. But it offers a unique method that places the imagination at the center of the relationship between the map and work of art, by thinking through the historical periods and disciplinary frameworks. The proposed process thus journeys through works of contemporary art and historical maps, through literary fiction and youth albums, or through musical scores, as another way to understanding the meaning of map making. The question raised in the first part is thus definitional : this is not about the significance of a map, but rather the significance of map making. Map making is representation, according to standard definitions. Yet we must keep in mind how the imagination has a place in the mapping process that builds territories in an effect of representa¬tion. The second part is also regarding definition : what is imaginary cartography ? And the answer will change from the term construction to that of foundation. Imagining a map would be giving oneself the power to create : a territory, a world, or a place for a work of art to emerge. The last part com¬pletes the meaning of the term foundation : map making would provide the space for a world that remains to be invented, or even a work of art to be achieved. And again, because of imagination, the very use of a map could be revealed as a practice in itself, and could join in the movement of creation

Abstract:
This study has begun with an important observation : organizations are more and more submerged by information whose management is necessary for their activities. As a matter of fact, the globalization of flows and services has created new needs and then new activities have been developed : strategic intelligence, innovation management, knowledge capitalization, intellectual and human capital management, economic intelligence, etc. Insofar as more and more information are collected, the enterprise's informational space does not stop to increase. In such a context, the future of organizations goes through the control of their informational space. The control of a space is a universal problem which concerns mankind since its origin. Cartography results from this problem. It makes it possible to visualize a space for a better apprehension. Each map plays the role of an external medium for mind in order to amplify the user's cognition. The study of cartography has revealed that building maps from the informational space of organizations requires to carry out paradigms of representation, visualization and interaction. This process is now well known and controlled. However it meets only partially our needs. Indeed, it remains two problems to solve to reach that point: how to take into account the domain's semantics and how to select the different paradigms in order to provide the most suitable maps for users ? Faced with this two-fold problem, we have defined a new cartography paradigm for building maps which fit to the needs of organizations. We have named it "semantic cartography". This new cartography paradigm relies on our different propositions and realizations. Our proposition has been validated through different industrial applications, e. G. Content management systems and competency management systems
