Abstract:
Carybdea xaymacana Conant, 1897 is a box jellyfish belonging to the family Carybdeidae and is currently recorded from the Mexican Caribbean (State of Quintana Roo), Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, Jamaica, Panama, and Venezuela. Here, we report for the first time the presence of this species in Colombia, based on collections made in three departments of the Colombian Caribbean. Documenting the extension in the distribution range of this species is of great importance due to its ecological role in regional ecosys-tems.

Abstract:
This thesis reports the molecular characterization of C. barnesi Southcott, 1967 and Malo kingi Gershwin, 2007; two Australian box jellyfish responsible to trigger, a complex and variable illness in humans, termed -Irukandji syndrome-. This is characterised by a 30 min delay before severe systemic symptoms occur including severe pain, catecholamine effects and in some cases cardiopulmonary decompensation. Between 100 to 200 cases of Irukandji syndrome are reported each year and in 2002, Irukandji jellyfish caused the death of two people in North Queensland, Australia. M. kingi is presum

Abstract:
Coming into contact with particular jellyfish species causes envenomation, and can trigger a range of debilitating, even fatal, set of symptoms called Irukandji Syndrome. Despite the risk to human health, potential losses in tourist revenue, and direct, substantial costs of treatment, there is confusion in the diagnosis and treatment of Irukandji Syndrome, and major gaps in our knowledge about the fundamental biology and ecology of the animals that cause it. This project examined the scope of Irukandji Syndrome and scrutinized the current ideas in relation to its distribution, definition and t
