Abstract:
On the basis of the theory about blind separation of monaural speech based on computational auditory scene analysis (CASA), a two-talker speech separation system combining CASA and speaker recognition was proposed to separate speech from other speech interferences in this paper. First, a tandem algorithm is used to organize voiced speech, then based on the clustering of gammatone frequency cepstral coefficients (GFCCs), an object function is established to recognize the speaker, and the best group is achieved through exhaustive search or beam search, so that voiced speech is organized sequentially. Second, unvoiced segments are generated by estimating onset/offset, and then unvoiced–voiced (U–V) segments and unvoiced–unvoiced (U–U) segments are separated respectively. The U–V segments are managed via the binary mask of the separated voiced speech, while the U–V segments are separated evenly. So far the unvoiced segments are separated. The simulation and performance evaluation verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:
ntroduction: Fasciola hepatica is a parasite of the class Trematoda. It commonly has been found in developing countries. When it infects humans is characterized by a triad of fever, pain in right upper quadrant and peripheral eosinophilia. We present a 67-year-old female from a rural town of the north of Lima, Peru, it was found abdominal pain, eosinophilia and focal hepatic lesions. For this reason, a hepatic mass was the initial suspicion. The hepatic biopsy was performed and one of the findings was eosinophilia. Fasciola hepatica infection should be considered as part of differential diagnosis in hepatic tumors with eosinophilia when the origin of the patient is from endemic areas of F. hepatica.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents results from two simulation studies of galaxy formation. In the first project, a dark-matter-only HORIZON simulation is used to investigate the environment and redshift dependence of mass accretion onto haloes and subhaloes. It is found that the halo accretion rate varies less strongly with redshift than predicted by the Extended Press--Schechter formalism, and that low accretion events may drive the radio-mode feedback hypothesized for recent galaxy formation models. The subhaloes at $z<0.5$ in the simulation accrete at higher rates than haloes, on average, and it is argued that this is due to their enhanced clustering at small scales. There is no dependence of accretion rate on environment at $zsim2$, but a weak correlation emerges at $zleq0.5$. The results further support previous suggestions that at $z>1$, dark matter haloes and their associated black holes grew coevally, but imply that haloes could be accreting at fractional rates that are up to a factor of 3--4 higher than their associated black holes by the present day. In the second project, outputs from one of the Adaptive Mesh Refinement NUT simulations are analyzed in order to test whether filamentary flows of cold gas are responsible for the build-up of angular momentum within a Milky Way type disk at $zgeq3$. A set of algorithms are presented that use the resolved physical scale of $12,mathrm{pc}$ to identify: (i) the central gas disk and its plane of orientation; (ii) the complex individual filament trajectories that connect to the disk, and; (iii) the infalling satellites. The results suggest that two filaments at $zgtrsim 5.5$, which later merge to form a single filament at $zlesssim 4$, drive the angular momentum and mass budget of the disk between $3lesssim zlesssim 8$, whereas luminous satellite mergers make negligible fractional contributions. These findings hence provide strong quantitative evidence that the growth of thin disks in low mass haloes at high redshift is supported via inflowing streams of cold gas.

Gaylard, Jeanne. "The anorexic mask : a case study of a patient with co-morbid nervosa and factitious disorder?" Thesis, Rhodes University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1004511.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is a case-study of a patient who was diagnosed as having co-morbid Anorexia Nervosa and Factitious Disorder. It would appear that central to an understanding of both of these disorders is the patient's disturbed relationship to her own body. The existing literature on co-morbid Factitious Disorder and Anorexia Nervosa is rare, with only three cases published. A careful reading of these cases suggests that in all of these cases, Factitious Disorder may have been the primary diagnosis. In this case there was as overidentification with the patient role, and the patient's anorexic symptoms appeared to serve the function of meeting the patient's acute dependency needs. Thus, the patient's Anorexia Nervosa masked the Factitious Disorder and appeared to be secondary to the Factitious Disorder. It is argued that these disorders share several common dynamics, namely the inability to separate from the mother, high parental expectations as well as the use of the body as a transitional or pre-cursor object. In addition there are some common dynamics in the psychotherapy of these patients. All of these factors suggest that in both these disorders the developmental arrest may be located at a pre-verbal level.

In ASME 2020 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. Abstract:
Abstract Additive Manufacturing (AM) has been identified as a key enabler for Mass Customization (MC) due to its negligible tooling cost associated with producing one-off items. This is especially valuable for the medical industry where the ability to create patient-specific products can greatly improve performance and comfort. However, the use of AM so far has only been limited to previously custom-made devices due to the prohibitive design costs associated with a knowledge-intensive and highly manual design process. The research community has often overlooked this area and as yet no study has shown a completely automated process that can reduce or even eliminate this design cost for existing mass-produced ergonomic products (e.g. respirators). This study investigates the methodology of developing a completely automated design pipeline through a case study on Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) mask. Through a parametric design approach, a fully automated pipeline was constructed based on a large-scale statistical shape model “learnt” from 9,663 high-resolution facial scans. The pipeline accepts a single “in-the-wild” facial image as the only data input and produces a CAD model of CPAP mask in under a minute. The significant reduction in design time, ease of data acquisition and the complete removal of a manual CAD modelling process can make AM more accessible for CPAP masks manufacturers. The same workflow can potentially be employed to construct automation pipelines for other types of wearables, therefore encouraging the adoption of AM for MC of a wider selection of products.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: The PICOS principle was adopted when we confirmed the study eligibility. The inclusion criteria were as follows: (1) patients were critically ill, which was defined as adult patients who were from the ICU department; (2) exposure: patients had a clear definition of LSMM based on CT scans, anthropometric methods and ultrasound; (3) presented the prevalence of LSMM or could be calculated by the available data from the article; and (4) study design: observational study (cohort study or cross-sectional study). Articles that were reviews, case reports, comments, correspondences, letters or only abstracts were excluded. Condition being studied: Critical illness often results in low skeletal muscle mass for multiple reasons. Multiple studies have explored the association between low skeletal muscle mass and mortality. The prevalence of low skeletal muscle mass and its association with mortality are unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to identify the prevalence and mortality risk of low skeletal muscle mass among critically ill patients.

Hanna, Rema, Bridget Hoffmann, Paulina Oliva, and Jake Schneider. The Power of Perception: Limitations of Information in Reducing Air Pollution Exposure. Inter-American Development Bank, July 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0003392.

Abstract:
We conduct a randomized controlled trial in Mexico City to determine willingness to pay (WTP) for SMS air quality alerts and to study the effects of air quality alerts, reminders, and a reusable N95 mask on air pollution information and avoidance behavior. At baseline, we elicit WTP for the alerts service after revealing whether the household will receive an N95 mask and participant compensation, but before revealing whether they will receive alert or reminder services. While we observe no significant impact of mask provision on WTP, higher compensation increases WTP, suggesting a possible cash-on-hand constraint. The perception of high pollution days prior to the survey is positively correlated with WTP, but the presence of actual high pollution days is not correlated with WTP. Follow-up survey data demonstrate that the alerts treatment increases reporting of receiving air pollution information via SMS, a high pollution day in the past week, and staying indoors on the most recent perceived high pollution day. However, we observe no significant effect on the ability to correctly identify which specific days had high pollution. Similarly, households that received an N95 mask are more likely to report utilizing a mask with filter in the past two weeks, but we observe no effect on using a filter mask on the specific days with high particulate matter. Although we nd that air quality alerts increased the salience of air quality and avoidance behavior, these results illustrate the difficulty that information treatments face in overcoming perceptions to effectively reduce exposure to air pollution.

Filmer, Deon. Long-Lived Consequences of Rapid Scale-Up? The Case of Free Primary Education in Six Sub-Saharan African Countries. Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE), February 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.35489/bsg-rise-wp_2023/128.

Abstract:
Across six Sub-Saharan African countries, grade 4 students of teachers who were hired after a free primary education reform perform worse, on average, on language and math tests—statistically significantly so in language—than students of teachers who were hired before the reform. Teachers who were hired just after the reform also perform worse, on average, on tests of subject content knowledge than those hired before the reform. The results are sensitive to the time frames considered in the analysis, and aggregate results mask substantial variation across countries—gaps are large and significant in some countries but negligible in others. Analysis of teacher demographic and education characteristics—including education level or teacher certification—as well as teacher classroom-level behaviors reveals few systematic differences associated with being hired pre- or post-reform.

Abstract:
Consideration of aspects of the functioning of mass media in society requires a comprehensive approach based on universal media theory. The article presents an attempt to consider public events in terms of a functional approach to understanding the media, proposed by media theorist Dennis McQuayl in the theory of mass communication. Public events are analyzed, on the one hand, as a complex object of journalistic reflection and, on the other hand, as a situational media that examines the relationship of agents of the social and media fields in the space of communication interaction. Taking into account philosophical approaches to the interpretation of the concept of event, considering its semantic spectrum, specificity of use and synonyms in the Ukrainian language, a working definition of the concept of public event is given. Based on case-analysis of public events, In accordance with the functions of the media the functions of public events are outlined. This is is promising for the development of study on typology of public events in the context of mass communication theory. The realization of the functions of public events as situational media is illustrated with such vivid examples of cultural events as «Gogolfest» and «Book Forum in Lviv». The author shows that a functional approach to understanding public events in society and their place in the space of mass communication, opens prospects for studying the role of media in reflecting the phenomena of social reality, clarifying the presence and quality of communication between media producers and media consumers.
