Abstract:
ntroduction: Fasciola hepatica is a parasite of the class Trematoda. It commonly has been found in developing countries. When it infects humans is characterized by a triad of fever, pain in right upper quadrant and peripheral eosinophilia. We present a 67-year-old female from a rural town of the north of Lima, Peru, it was found abdominal pain, eosinophilia and focal hepatic lesions. For this reason, a hepatic mass was the initial suspicion. The hepatic biopsy was performed and one of the findings was eosinophilia. Fasciola hepatica infection should be considered as part of differential diagnosis in hepatic tumors with eosinophilia when the origin of the patient is from endemic areas of F. hepatica.

Tillson, Henry. "Simulations of mass accretion onto dark matter haloes and angular momentum transfer to a Milky Way disk at high redshift." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2012. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:23152d86-ca8a-42dc-9561-b31190ab75e8.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents results from two simulation studies of galaxy formation. In the first project, a dark-matter-only HORIZON simulation is used to investigate the environment and redshift dependence of mass accretion onto haloes and subhaloes. It is found that the halo accretion rate varies less strongly with redshift than predicted by the Extended Press--Schechter formalism, and that low accretion events may drive the radio-mode feedback hypothesized for recent galaxy formation models. The subhaloes at $z<0.5$ in the simulation accrete at higher rates than haloes, on average, and it is argued that this is due to their enhanced clustering at small scales. There is no dependence of accretion rate on environment at $zsim2$, but a weak correlation emerges at $zleq0.5$. The results further support previous suggestions that at $z>1$, dark matter haloes and their associated black holes grew coevally, but imply that haloes could be accreting at fractional rates that are up to a factor of 3--4 higher than their associated black holes by the present day. In the second project, outputs from one of the Adaptive Mesh Refinement NUT simulations are analyzed in order to test whether filamentary flows of cold gas are responsible for the build-up of angular momentum within a Milky Way type disk at $zgeq3$. A set of algorithms are presented that use the resolved physical scale of $12,mathrm{pc}$ to identify: (i) the central gas disk and its plane of orientation; (ii) the complex individual filament trajectories that connect to the disk, and; (iii) the infalling satellites. The results suggest that two filaments at $zgtrsim 5.5$, which later merge to form a single filament at $zlesssim 4$, drive the angular momentum and mass budget of the disk between $3lesssim zlesssim 8$, whereas luminous satellite mergers make negligible fractional contributions. These findings hence provide strong quantitative evidence that the growth of thin disks in low mass haloes at high redshift is supported via inflowing streams of cold gas.

Gaylard, Jeanne. "The anorexic mask : a case study of a patient with co-morbid nervosa and factitious disorder?" Thesis, Rhodes University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1004511.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is a case-study of a patient who was diagnosed as having co-morbid Anorexia Nervosa and Factitious Disorder. It would appear that central to an understanding of both of these disorders is the patient's disturbed relationship to her own body. The existing literature on co-morbid Factitious Disorder and Anorexia Nervosa is rare, with only three cases published. A careful reading of these cases suggests that in all of these cases, Factitious Disorder may have been the primary diagnosis. In this case there was as overidentification with the patient role, and the patient's anorexic symptoms appeared to serve the function of meeting the patient's acute dependency needs. Thus, the patient's Anorexia Nervosa masked the Factitious Disorder and appeared to be secondary to the Factitious Disorder. It is argued that these disorders share several common dynamics, namely the inability to separate from the mother, high parental expectations as well as the use of the body as a transitional or pre-cursor object. In addition there are some common dynamics in the psychotherapy of these patients. All of these factors suggest that in both these disorders the developmental arrest may be located at a pre-verbal level.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an attempt to analyse publishing critically, in keeping with the current preoccupation with the phenomenon of 'globalisation'. The primary concern of this thesis is to systemise and elaborate a theoretical frame for the study of international publishing by looking into the following major research questions. I. How can we apply the concept of globalisation which has recently dominated discussion in the social sciences in analysing international publishing? 2. What are the major factors which influence contemporary international publishing that have resulted in an uneven intellectual structure? 3. As a case study of these issues what is the publishing situation in Korea in relation to the international publishing scene? In explicating these three research questions, the thesis combines a theoretical review with a field study.

Olaoye, Olanrewaju Akanbi. "Collaborative governance : the case of mass transportation in London and Lagos." Thesis, University of Lincoln, 2015. http://eprints.lincoln.ac.uk/23288/.

Full text
Abstract:
State actors have adopted policies which they claim will enable the provision of public services including mass transportation. In most global cities, dedicated strategic transport authorities are employed for the purpose of planning and implementing strategies to sustain mass transportation. While such bodies play key roles, not only planning mass transport policies, but also coordinating the system, not much is known about the dynamics of the relations among the actors who constitute the governance system responsible for sustaining mass transportation. This thesis therefore explores the systems of governance of mass transportation in London and Lagos with the aim of evaluating the role of collaborative modes of governance in affecting and sustaining better transportation for the mass public. While it is claimed by the political leadership of both London and Lagos that ‘partnership’ is employed in delivering mass transportation, the cases investigated show that what really exists ranges from a few relatively genuine partnerships to relationships that are driven more by contracts and mandatory arrangements. The research is an analysis of two cases, employing a qualitative approach for data gathering through the use of semi-structured interviews. The primary evidence gathered from both cases is validated by the secondary data. The thesis contributes to the literature on collaborative governance by emphasising the importance of political and strategic leadership, the relevance of the nature of funding regime, accountability and the socio-cultural context for sustaining service delivery. A key finding from the study is that most of the partnerships in both cases are influenced by political leaders (the Mayor of London and the Governor of Lagos state). Furthermore, actors in both governance systems do not agree on the organisation that should take the lead in the system, although there is a fair measure of agreement that the Mayor is best placed to take the lead in London. Also, perhaps unsurprisingly, in both systems there exist conflicts and partnerships. The discussion of the findings, together with an analysis of the recurring themes in this study, offer significant insights into the factors that shape and influence the systems of governance of mass transportation in both cases, and the degree to which collaborative governance exists.

Abstract:
Mass Media and Communication
Ph.D.
This dissertation is a case study of the Irish Echo, an Irish ethnic weekly newspaper that began publishing in New York City in 1928. The Irish ethnic community is unique because it operates within two cultural spheres: Irish society and American society. The purpose of this case study is to identify how ethnic newspaper function and how this function has changed over time. The study attempts to explain the role of the ethnic newspaper in balancing the needs of immigrants to adapt to American culture while maintaining ties to their native country. The author uses a qualitative approach combining oral history, in depth interviewing, documentary evidence and textual analysis. The study finds that the Irish Echo acts as a functional intersect that provides adhesion and structure through the operations of bonding and bridging. It performs these functions through political advocacy, vocal criticism of discrimination, and guides in assimilation and character building.

Lago, Rita Mafalda Torrao. "Political communication and news coverage : the case of Sinn Fein." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/913.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the development of Sinn Féin's communication strategies and considers how news coverage of the party has evolved in recent years, and in particular with the advent of the Irish peace process from the mid-1990s onwards. The aim of the research presented here is to establish the relationship between the development of the party's professional communication apparatus and the evolution of its news coverage and to determine the extent to which the emergence of a sophisticated approach to communication has impacted upon media coverage. The thesis argues that the development and implementation of the party's professional communication apparatus has been the result of a much wider process of republican reappraisal that took place during the 1980s. This culminated in the 1990s with the transformation of the republican movement into a more constitutional and negotiation-oriented party, while progressively moving away from the armed struggle as a means to achieve Irish re-unification. Moreover, in emphasising that there has been a considerable improvement in the reporting of Sinn Féin; namely that the news media have become progressively more interested in republican predicaments, less biased and more critical of unionism, it also suggests that the improved media coverage must be seen as a result of the political re-alignment of the movement itself. Ultimately, the main argument of this thesis is that we are now witnessing a new phase of the republican movement and, by proxy, of Northern Irish politics and its coverage in the media. This has meant that Sinn Féin has become more wiling to reach a political compromise and to find a peaceful solution to the conflct, and has attempted to affirm itself as a party with political and social interests, other than Irish re-unification. This has also forced the British government to reappraise its own view of the conflict and of Sinn Féin, recognising above all that the party and Northern Irish politics have evolved from a situation of war to one where it is dominated by careful and sensitive diplomacy. The result is that most of the common assumptions held about Sinn Féin including those of some academics, its political communication and its news coverage, must now be reconsidered in light of the radical transformations that have taken place.

Abstract:
Namibia has been praised for having rigorous policy frameworks that address various national development challenges. Over the years, the country has introduced various policy initiatives to address the housing challenge in the country. However, implementation of such policies and programmes faced various challenges resulting in suboptimal outcomes and consequently, a situation where such programmes are abandoned, and new ones are introduced with little learning from past experiences. This paper, analysed the role of governance on effective programme management using a case study of Namibia’s Mass Housing Development Programme. The findings highlight governance challenges, as one of the key contributing factors to failing programmes. A qualitative approach was employed in gathering data using face to face in-depth interviews with the informants who represented the target population in the study. The paper contributes to the body of knowledge on the importance of governance which public policy and programme makers can draw lessons from for effective programme implementation.

Mungonge, Goliath. "A case study of strategic leadership in the creation and development of a privately owned newspaper in Zambia." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1003854.

Full text
Abstract:
Roles of various constituent elements of Strategic Leadership address deep and continuing issues relating to the creation and development of any organization. What is required to help firms successfully navigate the dynamics and uncertain environment in which they compete today to be successful is addressed. The founding in July 1991 of The Post, a privately owned Zambian newspaper, provided a unique opportunity to investigate the roles that various constituent elements of strategic leadership have played in its success. This is largely because much is already known about how state-owned media are managed, financed, and sustained by the state itself, which is fully involved in their re-capitalization and operating costs. The themes identified are at the heart of current debates about the capacity of private organizations to respond to new expectations, market realities, no state funding, globalization, technology, and a long list of other challenges so as to become market driven enterprises. The case of The Post is seen to present a story of an enduring publication in times of political, financial, social and other adversities and the research participants have no illusions about the success of the publication. The case study of The Post also gives useful insight into the many challenges and obstacles faced by the newspaper. It offers examples of determination, focused courage and innovation, complemented by strategic leadership. This was done by means of what emerged from the insight and experiences of the six research participants that were part of the founders of the newspaper and those associated with the development of the newspaper since its inception.

Lee, Hee-Jung. "Factors Affecting Tourists’ Preference for Organised Mass Tours: The South Korean Case." Thesis, Griffith University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/367120.

Full text
Abstract:
Organised mass tourists heavily rely on travel organisations and purchase holiday products that offer various elements including transportation, accommodation, meals, sightseeing activities, and tour guides who speak their language. Organised mass tourists are unlikely to have chance to experience authenticity and freedom at a destination, as they have to follow schedules which have been previously organised for the group by travel professionals. Despite perceived disadvantages, however, organised mass tours remain popular in South Korea with around half of South Korean travellers purchasing various types of mass tourism products. Previous studies have focused more on identifying ‘how’ mass tourists behave differently from independent travellers when travelling overseas. Relatively less attention has been paid to identifying reasons ‘why’ mass tourists behave differently from independent travellers. This study fills this gap by identifying important factors affecting South Korean tourists’ preference for mass tourism. The primary purpose of this research is to identify driving factors that encourage tourists to prefer organised mass tours in the South Korean context. This research employed a mixed method approach by conducting two stages of research sequentially. Qualitative research was carried out during the first stage. A review of previous literature showed a lack of prior research into reasons why mass tourism continues to be preferred in Asian countries including South Korea. To gain a better insight into this topic, qualitative research was carried out through focus group interviews. Three interview sessions were held with experienced South Korean tourists and two sessions were conducted with travel industry experts. Based on the qualitative results and a review of the literature, a series of hypotheses was proposed along with the proposed framework of the study.

Full text
Abstract:
New media technology continues to provide journalists with sophisticated tools that are changing news processing and gathering. Economics journalists in particular have grasped the possibilities offered by new media technologies. Thus, this paper offers a theoretical and practical look at how new media technologies have impacted the production and processing of economics news in South Africa, with a particular focus on Fin24.com which is South Africa's biggest online economics news publication. Using qualitative research methods and the case-study approach, this thesis documents the impact of new media technologies on the production of economics news. It draws on Witschge and Nygren's (2009) framework which describes how new media technologies change the nature in which news is produced and processed. New media technologies in this study will refer to the Internet, particularly search engines like Google, social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, Blogs as well as mobile telephony. Economics journalism will here refer to all coverage of economics and business-related news. This is because the case study (Fin24.com) covers both business and economics journalism by strict definition. Findings reveal that these new media technologies have not only changed economics newsgathering and processing but also journalistic routines. The findings generally show that new media technologies make it easier for economics journalists to produce the news quickly and efficiently. Indeed, the most distinguishing characteristic of new media is its overall speed, which is both challenging and attractive. The findings also reveal that new media technologies within a newsroom can be problematic in a number of ways, mainly raising issues of accuracy and credibility thus challenging the profession of economics journalism more than ever.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil (Journalism))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
Adolescent girls’ passage to womanhood is frequently exposed to a vast array of media products. Mass communication products have become educational devices, guiding young women towards an understanding of femininity and all its accompanying intricacies. We are taught gender lessons throughout our lives, but our teen years are of special significance in this regard. In a society that is becoming all the more media saturated, advertisers are capitalising on different desires and ideals that are being constructed in the media. Initially, only adult women were targeted, but these days a number of mass media products aimed specifically at young women have opened up a whole new market. Until a few years ago, South African teenage girls had only women’s magazines aimed at adult women to refer to. These days, however, a number of teen magazine titles exist locally. The aim of this study was to look at teen magazines as an example of texts that are aimed specifically at adolescent women. More specifically, the study looked at the discourse on femininity within the pages of the text – what is the magazine in essence saying about womanhood? To take the research one step further, it was decided to look at how readers of the magazine engaged and negotiated with the text in order to inform their own understanding of femininity. The goal of the study was to determine how the discourse on femininity played out between the text and the reader. Combining quantitative and qualitative elements, the study was located within a cultural studies framework and referred to Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding model as a representation of the communication process. It was found that the magazine under scrutiny had twelve specific thematic categories that were most prominent. It was found that the femininity encoded in these texts revolved around consumerism, fashion and boys. The study found that the readers taking part in focus group research possessed a sufficient amount of educational “cultural capital” to be able to resist the dominant messages encoded in the texts, yet they seemingly chose not to. This study also indicated that the femininity that was constructed in the studied text did not take the greater South African context into account, and that it served to entertain readers from higher LSM groups rather than all South African girls.

Abstract:
Corruption is a local and global problem which has been exacerbated by neoliberal capitalism. One of the institutions available for curbing it is the media. This thesis examines the impact of democratisation and press freedom on transparency and accountability in the conduct of public affairs following Nigeria’s return to “civil rule” in 1999. Largely qualitative, and nominally quantitative, in nature, the study covers some of the major socio-economic and political issues affecting the Nigerian media, and the inherent unethical conduct that has portrayed the fourth estate of the realm as a lapdog. The fieldwork involved the content illustration of news stories, focusing on features; newspaper headlines; editorials; opinion articles; and cartoons. My interviews were with twenty-five select-stakeholders in the anti-corruption sector in Nigeria, including former heads of anti-corruption agencies, politicians, legal practitioners, civil society activists, faith based leaders and media practitioners who had completed the instrument used for the study. The analytical framework deployed for this study is critical discourse analysis, which involves analysing responses from the twenty-five stakeholders, who were picked using a purposive sampling technique. These interviews formed the primary data for the study, and documentary research consisting of newspapers reports, official reports and in-house magazines published by two of the anti-corruption agencies formed the secondary data. A major finding of the study is that the current Nigerian media industry is structurally deficient in the credibility needed to perform its role as a watchdog, because its integrity has been compromised, following incidents of bribery and corruption, which are commonly subsumed into the derisive phrase, “brown envelope.” Fifteen years of “civil rule”, and anti-corruption measures, such as the adoption Freedom of Information Act 2011, have not significantly been translated into reduction of corruption, since the press has been largely adjudged to be equally corrupt. Corruption has permeated the media sector, and it seemingly enjoys the connivance of the media proprietors, who often encourage reporters to use leverage on sources for pecuniary rewards by urging them to abuse their professional identity cards for “survival”, since their salaries and emoluments are not paid on time. Moreover, the concept of “cash-for- news- coverage,” where journalists only publish positive news in exchange for cash from the source(s), the suspect(s) or the aggrieved, is very common. The widespread practice of taking the “brown envelope” describes an unethical form of news commercialisation and, coupled with the bias of media houses towards adverts, this compromises their critical roles of advocacy and as the watchdog in society. Following the perpetuation of this perversion by the media, crooks are often portrayed as saints and falsehood overshadows truth. The findings therefore suggest that corruption is growing, rather than diminishing, in Nigeria, because the media are very weak. Essentially, the argument is that to overcome some of the challenges facing the media industry in Nigeria, there is an overwhelming need for media practitioners to establish a pool of resources, to gain majority control of newspapers (a virile organ of thought and an opinion shaper) and, invariably, to curtail political inference in their editorial contents and, eventually, to run their newspapers professionally. Broadly, this study contributes to extant literature on democratisation; it offers new paradigms for, and perspectives on media transparency. It establishes that political corruption is the negative outcome of the connivance and collusion between the mass media and the civil society in a transitional democracy. In specific terms, it reveals that there is need for a clear distinction to be made on the kind of media tradition that will aid the anti-corruption crusade in Nigeria and in other growing democracies. The research contributes to work on media and accountability in the context of neoliberal corrupt behaviours that have both local and global dimensions.

Abstract:
This Master's thesis deals with network traffic control and bandwidth management in Internet, and includes four parts. In part 1, we introduce network traffic, the basic principles of traffic control, control methods and components, which are used to support the Quality of Service (QoS) in different network environments. In part 2, we present network bandwidth management concepts and its methods. Bandwidth is finite and valuable, so we need to manage it efficiently. Bandwidth management can support traffic control to lighten the traffic load. Bandwidth management and traffic control are complementary, and together can assure a high QoS. In part 3, we address the QoS issues in Internet, since the Internet is increasingly important and popular. We focus on the Differentiated Services (DiffServ) in Internet, and implement the two-bit (Premium/Assured) based DiffServ by coordinated control. Coordinated control is the combination of traffic control, bandwidth control and queue control. Since the two-bit based DiffServ has two major drawbacks, in part 4, we propose some new methods and algorithms to improve them. These methods and algorithms include Multilevel Assured Service, Token-based Assured Service, Constraint Based Routing and load balancing.

Abstract:
Our aim is to answer whether or not 3D printing is capable of achieving mass customization and mass production, since answering this might help predict a shift within manufacturing industries and the use that this technology has had the past years. Further, our aim is to give an overall view of the industry of companies offering 3D printed goods for end use through an e-commerce marketplace and its value creating activities. The overall aim is to contribute to fill the academic gap regarding research on 3D printing within the field of mass customization and provide groundwork for future research. To provide the current picture of the industry and thus analyze its capabilities regarding mass production and mass customization, we present the value chain with the involved value creating activities. We have conducted three qualitative interviews to three out of four companies within the industry complemented as well with an exhaustive research to the websites of the companies.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Non malignant invasive tumors of the colon and rectum are very rare. Gastrointestinal Basidiobolomycosis can present as a mass lesion mimicking colorectal cancer. CASE PRESENTATION: A 56 year old Caucasian male was evaluated for abdominal and pelvic pain for 4 weeks complicated by acute urinary retention. Radiological evaluation showed him to have recto-sigmoid and cecal mass. Endoscopic examination and biopsies did not reveal a definite diagnosis. Computerized tomography guided biopsy of the mass showed fungal elements consistent with gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis. He was treated with Itraconazole for 12 months with very good clinical and radiological response. CONCLUSION: Basidiobolomycosis of the gastrointestinal tract should be considered during evaluation of colorectal masses with atypical presentation. It is a rare entity seen more in endemic regions of the world for basidiobolomycosis including southwestern United States.

Abstract:
Quality and quality management have gained importance in the construction industry also due to losses of life and property. For high-quality buildings, the amount of defects during the construction works must be reduced. Thus, it is important to determine the defects which lead to low quality in the construction projects
and architectural, structural and constructional standards to measure some indicators of quality like workmanship, design of components and usage of correct and highquality materials. Therefore a systematic approach is required to achieve good standards both in design and construction. CONQUAS quality assessment system and Six Sigma quality management system are systems that could provide this systematic approach. The objective of this research is to evaluate the quality in mass-housing projects via Six Sigma. Thus, level of construction quality of the three houses in ODTÜ
KENT housing units in Turkey were assessed through Six Sigma with the contribution of CONQUAS quality assessment system. CONQUAS was used for determination of standards, whilst Six Sigma was used for data analysis. After the evaluation of interviews with contractor, site-supervisor, occupants and visual observations, defects and their reasons were determined. Reasons of poor quality in ODTÜ
KENT housing units were listed as firstly poor workmanship, then improper or of poorquality material usage and lastly problems in design of detailing. Despite different construction dates of units studied, the results show that nothing was learned from the previous mistakes and same defects were repeated. This shows the importance of a system providing feedback and evaluation of quality level of a construction project and quality improvement efforts of the contractor, and measuring the progress over time like Six Sigma.

Abstract:
This thesis presents the issue of user interfaces in Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), the difficulties in their use, and what we think could be done to alleviate these difficulties. The project came about as a result of complaints from students at a chemistry laboratory in Uppsala. Case studies of the laboratories in Stockholm University and Karolinska Institutet were made in the form of interviews, questionnaires, on-site visits, and literature studies. Combining this work with our knowledge in computer science and visualization, we investigate the ramifications of user interface problems in this area as well as our proposition for solving them. Our study showed that there are unaddressed issues with interface usability and the handling of user feedback, and that there is a need both for further research and bolstered efforts to alleviate these issues.

Full text
Abstract:
Acknowledging the provenance of the mask of Scaramouche in carnival, this thesis employs a critical framework drawn from the work of one of that phenomenon's major theorists, the Russian philologist, Mikhail Bakhtin. It specifically tests the hypothesis that the mask embodies Bakhtin' s criteria of carnival- laughter, both mocking and regenerative. First by charting its evolution as a parasite or servant role in the professional theatre of the socalled commedia dell 'arte in early seventeenth-century Italy. A comparison between the myth of its most famous exponent, Tiberio Fiorilli, and his material history exemplifies the hypothesis by establishing his social position as a type of court jester. The satirical functions of the mask in French society are then examined, focussing particularly on its influence upon the theatre of Moliere in its fluctuation betwen the roles of servant and master. It is argued that the carnivalesque qualities of the mask represented the continuation of a heterodox opposition to absolutist containment, and these dialogic properties are emphasised in its history throughout the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries, which is marked by a hybridisation into different artistic genres. It is demonstrated how the mask became inextricably associated with revolution through the popular fiction of Rafael Sabatini and cinematic adaptations thereof. Finally its attraction to the Italian avant-garde is seen in the closing decades of this century, returning through the mask to a cultural politics echoing the utopian project of carnival.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.C.P. and S.B.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 1999.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 67-70).
This thesis embodies the results of extensive research and analysis on options and strategies for procuring backup energy supplies for the Tren Urbano, an urban heavy rail transit system under construction in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Tren Urbano is designated as a Federal Transit Administration demonstration project because of the unique private role of the private sector in the design, construction, operations, and maintenance. The Tren Urbano is seen as a solution to the increasing traffic congestion and current lack of reliable public transportation in San Juan. The success of Tren Urbano will depend on a high degree of acceptance and usage by riders. Historically, Puerto Rico has suffered prolonged and frequent power outages due to extreme weather, a large demand on the island's isolated power grid, and reliance on a single power producing authority. Power disruptions will jeopardize public safety if passengers are stranded; loss of service and delays will compromise the public image of the train system. Therefore, reliable and adequate power supply is essential in ensuring Tren Urbano's reliability, safety, and positive public perception. This study addresses the critical need for backup power for TU, using as its starting point earlier engineering requirements which recommends 20 MW backup power split between two key locations. The thesis discusses procurement options .in general and then presents case studies of organizations from which the Tren Urbano Organization can draw valuable lessons about procuring backup power. A decision tree is derived by carefully analyzing and critically assessing various options open to Tren Urbano. A time line is developed for evaluating these options. From this study, two options emerge: 1) to go out and solicit bids for a backup power system using one of the following delivery methods: Design-Build/Turnkey or Design-Build-Operate/Design-Build-Operate-Maintain 2) to provide the backup power through a Siemens change order. Option 1 has the potential of saving 10 million dollars for the Tren Urbano Organization. This study takes into account legal, political, and technical issues. It is applicable even under possible departure from current engineering requirements, and as such provides the Tren Urbano Organization with an extremely useful and flexible decision-making template.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the last few years, the use of mobile telephony has become increasingly popular amongst various social and age groups around the world. Out of a need to understand this phenomenon, scholars have conducted a number of studies on the use of mobile phones and their characteristics such as mobility and accessibility. Few of these studies however, have focused their attention on this phenomenon in less developed countries. This thesis examines the key dimensions associated with the motivations and social implications of the use of mobile phones in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, by high school students. I specifically address the relationship between the motivational factors that lead to the purchase and use of mobile phones as well as the implications for interpersonal relationships and the social structure. I used the Domestication model (Silverstone and Haddon, 1996) along with the notions of 'context', 'rappropriation' and 'revelation' to answer the main research questions and attain the objectives of the study. The overall research findings of this thesis are based on data collected via questionnaire, interviews, and observations held in public places during a two-month field study in Port-au-Prince. The data analysis reveals several findings; the participants' main motives for acquiring and using mobile phones are to provide a sense of security in emergency situations, as a means to communicate with friends and family members and as a symbol to display their status. Keywords. Less developed countries, mobile phone, mobility, immediacy, domestication, motivation, interpersonal relationships, culture, rappropriation.
