Abstract:
Architecture has always been about connection since its primary purpose of building a shelter for humans. Among many other things, it provides connections between people, and connections between people and the natural and built environment. The design and building process is about connection as well. We design in the present, relying on the past to build in the future. In this context, time is the strongest connection that is present in most of the built environment around us. I consider museums to be a good building type that connects people with objects and materials of historical, religious, and cultural importance through preservation and presentation for the public. Since a very young age, I used to admire the buildings while walking the streets of Casablanca, where I was born. A city that is a combination of traditional Islamic influenced design and the European style of construction brought by the colonizers. My goal in this thesis is to explore, in an architectural setting, connecting the old city to the new city, and present this story to the general public.

Abstract:
The souika or the little market is a daily commercial event. It is surronded with a wall or a wire fence and is specialised in trade of daily needs (early vegetable and cloything) ; it is too attractive to be ignored. It helps the city's incomes increase through retail trade. Its social role is very important in the sense that the souika helps qualified and non-qualified people earn their living. It representes a masked economy of the developing cities and has never been the object of a particular study. The souika has turned to be an unquestionable reality in a segregationist and socio-spatial context. It is original in itself because il belongs neither to the modern sector nor to the traditional one. Inded, the souika is the result of an accelerated urbanisation and demographic growth which determine the economie metropolies of Casablanca and its regions. The souika is partially structured and is economically necessary to its surrounding areas; it also satisfies the needs of its customers who may be poor or rich. Yet, the souika's future remains ambiguous and unsure : it might be transformed into a well built urban market, or remain in its current state ; it might also disappear once for all. In sum, it depends on the city's management programme which is in use since 1984 (the year of the establishment of the diagram management of Casablanca)

Abstract:
A small town of about 20000 inhabitants in 1900, and chosen as the main port of the country and basic town of colonial penetration since 1912, casablanca rapidly became a thriving place of development where all social classes and enterprises have estblished themselves. In 1987 casablanca was the only city twice and half millionaire. Today it concentrates more than 50% of the economic activities of the country, hence its great attraction for capitale and manpower. Its population has never ceased increasing because of rural exodus. Its urbanization goes back to the time of the protectorate and still maintains its urban characteristics: architectural diversity and vast quarters often created by speculation. An important commercial center, casablanca is linked by all means of communication to other moroccan towns and regions and by its big port and airport to the major parts of foreign countries, especially those of the e. Abstract:
