Abstract:
“User” , as subject of studies after World War II, were frequently studied in 1980s in the field of Economics and Management as well. While in particular it was held in the Consumer Behaviour context, it was divided into subheadings according to the process it was included (such as purchase decision; Mittal, 1989; Slama and Tashchian, 1985; Smith and Bristor, 1994; cited in Michaelidou and Dibb, 2008) and each subheading had evaluated in its way. But there is a conflict about the involvement process in this context because the notion of consumer describes the subject as passive. In case, the main aim of this paper is to define “user” as an active agent by presupposition of user’s potentiality. In this context, the user involvement is studied in terms of innovation which is the intersection of management and new product development. The research is based on literature review and seeking for an answer of the reasons and fundamentals of user involvement in innovation process. The condition of user in terms of involvement is discussed in the light of the answers that we deduce from the literature review. Keywords: User involvement, innovation, user innovation.

Abstract:
Malignant fibrous histiocytoma is also known as malignant fibrous xanthoma and is a form of neoplasm with uncertain histological origin. This tumour is rich in histiocytes and fibroblasts. MFH represent one on the most common type of soft tissue sarcoma but it has a low incidence in general population. We report the case of a 60 years old male patient, presented at the University Emergency Hospital Bucharest for a tumoral mass on the left hemithorax, in evolution for about 1 year, with an accelerated grow in the last 6 months. This case is typically because the patient is a male and he is 60 years old (range 50-70 years). In the same time, there are some particularities that make the case special and determine us to draw some conclusions about the management of this pathology. Histiocytoma represent a rare tumoral pathology and it is difficult to do a differential diagnostic preoperatively. Surgery is the cornerstone of treatment for all soft tissues. The goal of surgery is to eradicate disease in the affected area. All excisions of tumoral mass must be with resection margins for oncological security to avoid the possible complications.

Abstract:
In the present development of a knowledge society and with the increasing impact of knowledge on economic growth, case studies have become vehicles of knowledge which can both store and transfer it. Knowledge based case studies describe the best practices as well as solutions of complex problems. Knowledge in case studies is described in both written and symbolic form. The content and form of knowledge based case studies should be in mutual equilibrium. Knowledge based case studies are both descriptions of methods and algorithms as well as narratives. As narratives, they should have a relevant literary quality. Case studies can involve mass media into their structure and use simulation techniques as well as techniques of entrepreneurial games. Case studies can thus be both dynamic and flexible. Users can personally influence the behaviour and evolution of the process. They can choose their role in the process and can also change it whilst performing the solution. Social, cultural and traditional values are respected during all steps leading to solutions of problems. Ecological aspects and conditions of sustainable development are taken into account when solutions are analysed, recommended and accepted. Case studies present the best practices which enable users to provide benchmarking examples of their own solutions. Data bases of case studies should provide more dimensions containing descriptors which characterize the studies. In the following article, six descriptors will be recommended: domains, objectives, critical success factors, indicators, the best practices explanations and case characteristics. These enable to sort out, categorize, classify and stratify studies in a data base and are helpful in assessing their quality. A vertical structure of the data base facilitates classification and ordering of studies according to subject areas. A horizontal structure of the database enables classification of case studies from the user point of view.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to individually examine the findings from eight case studies presented in this special issue and comparatively identify the findings regarding local learning and action. Design/methodology/approach Underlying research questions regarding power and powerlessness in regard to addressing underlying risk factors affecting local populations form the basis for the discussion. Proceedings of a collaborative workshop conducted with the contributing authors are analysed qualitatively to identify learning relating to the research questions emerging from the case studies individually and collectively. Findings A number of strategies and tactics for addressing underlying risk factors affecting local populations were identified from the case studies, including collaboration and cohesion. Campaigning, lobbying, communications and social mobilisation in an attempt to bridge the gap between local concerns and the decision-making of government and other powerful actors. Innovation and local mobilisation to address shortcomings in government support for disaster reduction and development. Communications as a first base to influence behaviour of both communities and government. Social change through empowerment of women to act in disaster reduction and development. Research limitations/implications The outcomes of the action research conducted by the authors individually and collectively highlight the necessity for bridging different scales of action through a range of strategies and tactics to move beyond local self-reliance to influence on underlying risk factors. The action research process employed may have wider applications in gathering and formalising local-level experience and knowledge. Practical implications The case studies and their analysis present a range of practical strategies and tactics to strengthen local resilience and address underlying risk factors which are replicable in other contexts. Originality/value Practitioners are activists and do not often engage in critical reflection and analysis. The method presented here offers a means of achieving this in order to generate learning from local-level experience. The findings contribute to the consideration of cross-scale action to address underlying risk factors which impact local communities.

Abstract:
AbstractAfrican women members of the Mothers’ Union in South Africa have forged a neo-indigenous expression of Christianity best expressed in the characteristics of the manyano movement (women’s prayer groups) which include extempore prayer and preaching, extensive fundraising, and the wearing of a church uniform. These women had to resist the restrictions placed upon them by women missionaries and church leadership from England, which included the abolishment of the church uniform during the 1950s. The article traces their struggle of resistance during this period and shows how they fought to wear a uniform and so identified themselves with the movement of women’s prayer unions existing in other churches. It also addresses the significance of the uniform as identified by elderly women from Vulindlela, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and suggests some of the existing ambiguities of the church uniform in the current church context.

Abstract:
Recently, the reputations of celebrities have been scrutinized. Reputation management was a concept thought to be beneficial for celebrities. Image restoration theory has been a concept formulated for use by individuals; therefore it was used for this study. This study is one of the first to review the theory's use in public relations, and its influence on celebrity status.Celebrity R. Kelly was the subject because he was involved in legal scandal. The objective was to determine if Mr. Kelly's publicist utilized image restoration theory as the basis for constructing response statements.A case study approach was utilized to provide an understanding of how this strategic plan might salvage reputations. The researcher reviewed documents and interviewed persons who had knowledge of the R. Kelly crisis. This study found use of elements of image restoration theory in this case as a form of reputation management, thereby confirming the usefulness of it as a cogent public relations tactic.

Abstract:
Abstract In this first-person recollection, Roberts describes in frank detail an expert witness in a civil rights case on behalf of former inmates subjected to a strip and body cavity search in a women's jail. As Roberts relates, the procedure was monitored by female deputies and conducted en masse, and those who were menstruating had to remove their soiled tampons or pads in front of the group and, in some cases, bleed down their legs and onto the floor. Deputies are alleged to have verbally abused the inmates during the procedure. This case, Roberts says, has opened her eyes to the ways the shame and disgust that menstruation engenders gets deployed to debase disenfranchised women. Roberts asserts that this is a uniquely misogynist form of punishment, meted out by and against bodies and minds that have been colonized by objectification and self-objectification, becoming a grotesque platform to dehumanize women who land on the wrong side of the law and who live in bodies that menstruate.

Abstract:
Abstract Lock-in techniques enable the detection of very small signals in a background that can be dominated by noise. This strength makes these techniques valuable especially for failure analysis of active devices where the deviation may be difficult to detect. This paper describes novel use case applications in which the lock-in amplifier plays a key role. The case studies covered are multi-frequency mapping fault isolation with nonperiodic patterns and frequency resonance measurement of a micro electro-mechanical system (MEMS) gyroscope. The paper presents how lock-in amplifiers enable digital failure analysis using compressed scan patterns. It reports on using a lock-in to characterize a MEMS gyroscope and on how to directly observe the gyroscope motion using phase laser voltage imaging/electro-optical frequency mapping. It can be concluded that the lock-in techniques form an essential part of the failure analysis toolkit and will only be more so with this study.

Abstract:
When retrospectively analyzing the design process of a creative product, the creative leap or moment of inspiration is often described by the designer in an ‘idealized way’ [1]. There is little evidence within literature describing when the ideas behind promising concepts were conceived. This study tracks several real industrial design projects in the early conceptual design phase. The development and manipulation of ideas captured during the initial group brainstorm meeting are assessed in terms of the concepts at the following stage gate meeting. In addition, several different forms of stimulus were introduced to the different groups and compared to a control group. The results showed that the frequency of idea production remained virtually constant for the first 60 minutes. However, the number of ideas to form part of a concept at the stage gate meeting dropped markedly after the first 20 minutes. The frequency of appropriate ideas featuring within stage gate concepts increased with the introduction of stimuli, highlighting the positive effect of introducing stimuli.

Full text
Abstract:
Pipelines can be exposed at water crossings where rivers lower the channel bed. Channel bed scour may cause damage to linear infrastructure such as pipelines by exposing the pipe to the flow of water and sediment. Accurate estimation of depth of scour is therefore critical in limiting damage to infrastructure. Channel bed scour has three main components: (1) general scour, (2) bed degradation, and (3) pool depth. General scour is the temporary lowering of the channel bed during a flood event. Channel bed degradation is the systematic lowering of a channel bed over time. Pool depth is depth of pools below the general bed elevation and includes the relocation of pools that result from river dynamics. Channel degradation is assessed in the field using indicators of channel incision such as channel bed armoring and bank characteristics, through the analysis of long profiles and sediment transport modelling. Pool depth is assessed using long profiles and channel movement over time. The catastrophic nature of bed lowering due to general scour requires a different assessment. A design depth of cover is based on analysis of depth of scour for a given return period (eg. 100-years). There are three main steps to predict general scour: (1) regional flood frequency analysis, (2) estimation of hydraulic variables, and (3) scour depth modelling. Typically, four scour models are employed: Lacey (1930), Blench (1969), Neill (1973), and Zeller (1981), with the average or maximum value used for design depth. We provide herein case studies for potential scour for pipeline water crossings at the Little Smoky River and Joachim Creek, AB. Using the four models above, and an analysis of channel degradation and pool depth, the recommended minimum depth of cover of 0.75 m and 0.142 m, respectively, were prescribed. Variability between scour models is large. The general scour model results varied from 0.45 m and 0.75 m for the Little Smoky River and 0.16 m to 0.51 m for Joachim Creek. While these models are more than 30 years old and do not adequately account for factors such as sediment mobility, they nevertheless do provide usable answers and should form part of the usual toolbox in water crossing scour calculations.

Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: In our previous paper, we have proposed a methodology to deliver an applied business course to the multicultural audience having in mind embedding into the course cultural sensitivity and create a safe place for multicultural students to use own cultural metaphors in a learning place. We have proposed a fusion of ancient storytelling tradition creating an overall context for the teaching process and specific use of rich picture coming from Soft System Methodology (SSM). The used teaching approach is promising and brings the required results. However, the proposed method, to be fully effective requires a computerized supporting tool in a form of sophisticated graphical editor/presentation application displaying in real-time case study progress along with the in-class discussion. This tool is a central topic for this paper. Background: The existing tools like for example MS PowerPoint, MS Visio, or Prezi used by us so far cannot be used for our purpose as the interactive image update distract the students. The MS PowerPoint and Prezi require visible mode switching between design mode (edit) and presentation mode. Whereas MS Visio editing is too slow for our purposes. This switching or editing time create a meaningful distraction during the discussion. Methodology: As a solution for the above problem, the authors work on the development of own specialized tool using open source software Blender 3D (http://blender.org) along with Python. The code will be released to open source domain to enable further co-operation with other researchers. Contribution: The described effort, if successful, should create a new presentation tool allowing among the other features, seamless in-class knowledge transfer and in the future will enable the way for gamification of case studies. Impact on Society: A definite improvement of teaching quality in applied business (however, not limited to) with further possibility to extend to deliver courses e.g. for company’s executives. The tool and methodology allow embedding cultural sensitivity into the learning process and will have an impact on digital inclusiveness. Future Research: The tool enables possibility for further analysis of the business situation by artificial intelligence interface. In fact, a whole interactive process of reaching the case conclusion may be observed (allowing collecting analytics and insights on teacher and student’s behavior and performance).

Abstract:
In the highly competitive nowadays markets, many companies actions assume the project form. In special, Information Technology (IT) projects assume great importance, enabling the dynamic actions that organisations need (Porter, 2001; Tapscott, 2001). However, IT applications assume different roles, from operational support to strategic, according to companies’ strategies and operations, besides the peculiarities of the industry in which they compete (McFarlan, 1984; Porter & Millar, 1985). According to this role (appraised by McFarlan’s Strategic Grid), ex-ante evaluation practices for selecting IT projects to be implemented can vary (Jiang & Klein, 1999). The objective of this paper is to analyse practices for selecting IT projects in Brazilian companies classified in different quadrants of the Strategic Grid and to observe any differences in ex-ante evaluation practices among them. The adopted methodological approach was qualitative research, more specifically case study (Claver, Gonzalez & Llopis, 2000; Yin, 1991) performed in four companies.

Abstract:
Product Platform Planning is an emerging philosophy that calls for the planned development and deployment of families of related products. It is markedly different from the traditional product development process, which focuses on optimized designs for individual products. This is a relatively new development in engineering design, which is not typically a part of an engineer’s education. Furthermore, it is different from traditional engineering topics in that it requires an integration of principles from both management and engineering design. All this makes for a new and different topic for which educational material needs to be developed. To address these needs, an online resource has been developed. This resource includes a set of three cases, a tutorial, and a glossary in a multimedia format hosted on the Internet. The tutorial developed for the website presents the basic concepts as well as current research on planning and architecting families of products. The case study section has three cases based on a family of popular power tools. The cases present information in the form of function diagrams, assembly diagrams, customer needs and market-segment data. Links are provided to helpful sites, as well as to relevant sections in the tutorial. Although product platform planning is a relatively new development, a variety of approaches have been used by the research community and practitioners in industry. A need was felt for a comprehensive, coherent source of knowledge in this field on which to base the case studies, and also as a means to providing a single source of information to users of this resource. Accordingly, a literature review was conducted and an overall process description was developed. This paper presents and describes the online learning resource which was developed. In addition, the literature review and the process description of platform planning that were developed are also detailed.

Abstract:
Abstract Design and manufacturing integration at the early design stage in product development, that is, the integration of conceptual design and conceptual process planning, may make a big impact. Thus the development of systematic computer-based support for this integration is desirable. To select and evaluate manufacturing processes, some aspects of form information is necessary. Thus when only the functionally critical forms have been determined from major functional requirements, synthesis of the configuration shape in a generic form would enable early assessment of manufacturing, processes. As a stepping stone toward the development of the configuration shape synthesis and process selection, case studies have been conducted using real world industrial parts. In this paper, we present the case studies using a planet carrier and a gear box housing, and discuss the issues in development of the shape synthesis and process selection method to support the design and process planning integration.

Abstract:
India has a unique and complex religious history, with faith and spirituality playing an important role in everyday life. Hinduism is the majority religion, and there are many minority religions. India also has a complicated class system and entrenched gender structures. Disability is another important identity. Many of these factors determine people’s experiences of social inclusion or exclusion. This paper explores how these intersecting identities influence the experience of inequality and marginalisation, with a particular focus on people with disabilities from minority religious backgrounds. A participatory qualitative methodology was employed in Chennai, to gather case studies that describe in-depth experiences of participants. Our findings show that many factors that make up a person’s identity intersect in India and impact how someone is included or excluded by society, with religious minority affiliation, caste, disability status, and gender all having the potential to add layers of marginalisation. These various identity factors, and how individuals and society react to them, impact on how people experience their social existence. Identity factors that form the basis for discrimination can be either visible or invisible, and discrimination may be explicit or implicit. Despite various legal and human rights frameworks at the national and international level that aim to prevent marginalisation, discrimination based on these factors is still prevalent in India. While some tokenistic interventions and schemes are in place to overcome marginalisation, such initiatives often only focus on one factor of identity, rather than considering intersecting factors. People with disabilities continue to experience exclusion in all aspects of their lives. Discrimination can exist both between, as well as within, religious communities, and is particularly prevalent in formal environments. Caste-based exclusion continues to be a major problem in India. The current socioeconomic environment and political climate can be seen to perpetuate marginalisation based on these factors. However, when people are included in society, regardless of belonging to a religious minority, having a disability, or being a certain caste, the impact on their life can be very positive.

Bolton, Laura. Lessons for FCDO Climate Change Programming in East Africa. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2021.085.

Abstract:
This rapid review synthesises evidence on FCDO climate projects across the East African region in the following countries; Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania. This review established that sector stakeholders in countries like Rwanda lacked climate impact information. This highlights the need of providing the right information in the right form to meet the end users need. The above case studies have shown the need for consistent and harmonised future climate projections that are country specific. According to a study undertaken in Tanzania and Malawi, understanding the likely future characteristics of climate risk is a key component of adaptation and climate-resilient planning, but given future uncertainty it is important to design approaches that are strongly informed by local considerations and robust to uncertainty. According to the findings from the research, policy incoherence, over-reliance on donor funding, change in leadership roles is a barrier to adaptation. There is also an urgent need for mechanisms for sharing experience and learning from methodologies, technologies, and challenges. Further, Stakeholder dialogue and iterative climate service processes need to be facilitated. This review also explores approaches to communicating climatic uncertainties with decision-makers. Particularly, presentation of data using slide-sets, and stories about possible futures.

Abstract:
There is increasingly strong evidence that taxation can contribute to expanded government responsiveness and accountability. However, such positive connections are not guaranteed. Rather, they are shaped by the political and economic context and specific policies adopted by governments and civil society actors. Without an environment that enables tax bargaining, there is a risk that taxation will amount to little more than forceful extraction. We consider how such enabling environments may be fostered through two mixed methods case studies of tax transparency and taxpayer engagement in Sierra Leone and Ghana. We highlight two key sets of findings. First, tax transparency is only meaningful if it is accessible and easily understood by taxpayers and relates to their everyday experiences and priorities. In particular, we find that taxpayers do not just want basic information about tax obligations or aggregate revenue collected, but information about how much revenue should have been collected and how revenues were spent. At the same time, taxpayers do not want information to be shared with them through a one-way form of communication, but rather want to have spaces for dialogue and interaction with tax and government officials, including through public meetings and radio call-in programmes. Second, strategies to encourage taxpayer engagement are more likely to be effective where forums for engagement are perceived by taxpayers to be safe, secure, and sincere means through which to engage with government officials. This has been most successful where governments have visibly demonstrated responsiveness to citizen concerns, even on a small scale, while partnering with civil society to foster trust, dialogue and expanded knowledge. These findings have significant implications for how governments design taxpayer education and engagement programmes and how civil society actors and development partners can support more equitable and accountable tax systems. Our findings provide concrete lessons for how governments can ensure that information shared with taxpayers is meaningful and accessible. Moreover, we show that civil society actors can play important roles as translators of tax information, enablers of public forums and dialogues around tax issues, and trainers of taxpayers, supporting greater tax literacy and sustained citizen engagement.
