Abstract:
Design review is a stage that undertaken to improve the quality of a design in buildings, cities and landscapes. The design review stage can be used to minimize the impact that will occur. Inappropriate design in the planning of the central city of Bandung in Gedebage could have caused the phenomenon of Urban Heat Island (UHI) in the region. The occurrence of this phenomenon can cause the lack of thermal comfort in the area. The potential of Urban Heat Island (UHI) in the planned area can be detected early by conducting design review towards RTBL document of Gedebage Technopolis, Bandung. This study aims to assess the 2014 RTBL of Gedebage with simulation using the ENVI-Met 4.3.1 tool. Design review was carried out with a climate sensitive urban design (CSUD) approach so that the design of The Integrated Terminal area of Gedebage Technopolis can have thermal comfort accords with standard. In this study, it was found that the design of The Integrated Terminal area of Gedebage Technopolis includes in the comfortable category and it has an average Predict Mean Vote (PMV) value of 1.6 for 24 hours. In addition to evaluate the design, it was found that by adding the principle of climate sensitive urban design, a design can be improved and improved its quality of the microclimate. The initial recommendation that given is reducing building height, increasing open space, and replacing material in the pedestrian area.

Abstract:
The cold chain management is the temperature control process which is essential for maintain the quality of fresh produce from upstream to the consumer in the supply chain so that the loss is minimized. Our objectives are to monitor the temperature during transportation, analyses and identify the problem cause loss of fresh vegetables by using causal-loop diagram. We monitor the temperature during transportation of fresh vegetables from a farm in Northern Thailand to a packing house in the central Thailand around 750 kms. for 17 to 18 hours. The fresh vegetables are packed in a stereo foam box with the cool packs and pile up on the back of a truck. At the packing house, fresh vegetables are bruised and rotten and loss about 30-40 percent by weight. The temperature is monitored by the data loggers. The result showed that the temperature inside the box during transport is 20oC-30oC where the range of external temperature is 20oC-40oC. Then, we suggest how to reduce loss by using proper management such as suitable material to control the temperature during transportation, location of box in the truck and packing method. Abstract:
Abstract. This paper investigates the spatial differences in fresh vegetable spending in Guilford County, North Carolina. We create a geo-coded spatial-temporal database for both human factors and natural factors to understand why food deserts have become a serious issue in a county with many farming activities. We find that residents living in food deserts do not buy enough fresh vegetables compared with their counterparts, even when they are shopping at full-service grocery stores. Social-economic factors are most sensitive and are important determinants of fresh food demand. Using an agent-based toy model, we find that fresh vegetable demand in each census tract in Guilford County varies to a large extent. The results suggest that the formation of food deserts may root from the demand side.

Abstract:
Subject area Strategic management, Strategic marketing, Entrepreneurship and Small business ventures. Study level/applicability This case study will be useful for undergraduate level students majoring in strategic management, entrepreneurship, small business ventures and marketing. Case overview Just Fresh Juice is a small entrepreneurial venture in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), specialising in preparing all-fresh juices, special mixes and fruit salads. The purpose of this paper is to analyse how Just Fresh can maintain its competitive advantage, and how it could sustain its rapid growth in the market and gain more market share in the long run. Just Fresh focuses on satisfying its customers more effectively than its competitors through a competitive strategy of cost leadership (Papulova and Papulova, 2006), direct interaction with the customers through social media (Srinivasan, 2014) and creating a customer experience (Porter, 2008), as delivering a good customer experience is often more effective in building a competitive advantage than optimising internal processes. Expected learning outcomes The purpose of this case is to enable management students to evaluate and analyse a small business established in the United Arab Emirates. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of new business set-up and build proper business strategy. They will be able to perform the company’s competitive standing using Porter’s Five competitive forces and analyse its business strategies as well. They will be able to analyse the current status of the company using SWOT analysis and to design alternative strategies for the company using TOWS analysis. Furthermore, students will be able to build a cost analysis model for the company. Supplementary materials Teaching notes are available for educators only. ABSTRACT: Looking at specific populations of knowers reveals that the presumption of sameness within knowledge communities can lead to a number of epistemological oversights. A good example of this is found in the case of survivors of sexual violence. In this paper I argue that this case study offers a new perspective on the debate between the epistemic internalist and externalist by providing us with a fresh insight into the complicated psychological dimensions of belief formation and the implications that this has for an epistemology that demands reasons that are first-person accessible.

Abstract:
Borja-Bravo, M., García-Salazar, J. A. and Skaggs, R. K. 2013. Mexican fresh tomato exports in the North American market: A case study of the effects of productivity on competitiveness. Can. J. Plant Sci. 93: 839–850. The North American market for fresh tomatoes (Lycopersicon escolentum Mill.) involves a complicated web of bilateral trading relationships between the United States, Mexico and Canada. Trade in fresh tomatoes between the three countries has changed significantly in recent years. In particular, Mexico's share of total US fresh tomato imports from all countries decreased from 93 to 88%, while Canada's share of US fresh tomato imports increased from 3 to 11% between 1996 and 2009. Mexico's declining competitive position in the US fresh tomato market is also evidenced by the fact that the Mexican share of combined Mexico–Canada exports to the United States decreased from 97% to 89% between 1996 and 2009. A spatial and inter-temporal model was used to analyze the impact of increased Mexican tomato yields on the North American fresh tomato market. Results indicate that for the average year between 2005 and 2008, 20% higher yields would have resulted in a 15.1% increase in Mexico's tomato production and a 28.9% increase in fresh tomato exports from Mexico to the United States. As a result of higher Mexican tomato sector productivity, Canadian and US producers’ shares of the US fresh tomato market would decrease and Mexico's would increase from 35.0 to 41.9%. The model shows that Mexico's share of US fresh tomato imports from both Mexico and Canada would grow from 88.1 to 90.3% as a result of the increased productivity. These results lead to the recommendation that increasing yields of this important export crop are key to maintaining and increasing the North American market competitiveness of Mexican-produced fresh tomatoes.

Abstract:
When purchasing food, consumers make their choices by comparing prices and qualities. As a wide and subjective notion, food quality deals with different kinds of attributes. They could be either verified by consumers or not before or after purchasing food e.g., colour, taste/flavor, nutritional facts, added substances during the productive processes, risks perceptions, and retail channel preferences. The aim of this research is to examine consumers' preferences for fresh potatoes quality attributes and also to identify those factors associated to purchases of potato of better quality. Data come from a household survey conducted in Mar del Plata city, Argentina, in June 2009. A representative sample of the population included 500 randomly selected households. Related to potato nutrients, 50% of the sample mentioned at least one nutrient (carbohydrates 83%, vitamins 24%, potassium 16%, and fibre 12%). Households with many members have a higher probability to consume fresh potato more frequently than smaller households, and older respondents consume fresh potato more frequently than younger individuals. Households considering potato as a relevant component of a balanced diet are likely to consume fresh potatoes more frequently than households that did not emphasized the role of this product in their meals. Consumer perception about the relationship between price and quality showed that the higher educational level, the lower the number of respondents who declared that the price is a trustful sign of quality. Finally, when asked about willingness-to-pay for fresh potatoes of better quality, 34% of households were willing to pay a premium of 0.13 US$/kg and 19% were willing to pay a price premium of 0.26 US$/kg.

Abstract:
Ready-mix concrete (RMC) in Tunisia is becoming more and more in demand in the civil engineering sector thanks to its qualities of handling in the fresh state and resistance in the hardened state, this composite material must respect the quality-price ratio. A RMC with a minimal cost is the object of our work. This research is part of the opening of higher education on professional life, where we optimized the formulation of a RMC. This work has 3 axes. In the first place the resources in building materials were characterized, namely various samples of sand, gravel, cement and water. Subsequently, the adjuvant-cement ratio (A/C) was optimized. Finally, the workability of the concrete as well as its mechanical aptitude at various ages 7, 14 and 28 days were characterized. These examinations have resulted in an appropriate formulation for any type of resource that varies according to the provenance of the quarries (gravel and sand), the effect of the plasticizer-water reducer is found for a very interesting A/C ratio, the mechanical tests for different ages are also conclusive.

Abstract:
Drawing upon insights from growing strand of value chain literature, this article examines primary data collected from farmers supplying cauliflower and spinach to Reliance Fresh in the outskirts of Jaipur to understand the implication for farmer households of emergence of supermarket in a smallholder-dominated setting. The article finds that as a lead firm, Reliance Fresh is adopting flexible models of sourcing, devoid of any resource provision, to procure fresh produce of required quality and standards. In such a context, the barrier to participation of smallholders in supermarket-driven agri-food system varies across crops, depending on resource intensity of crops. Participation of smallholders, poorly endowed with human and physical capital, is limited in resource-intensive crop, such as cauliflower, because of high entry barrier in terms of requirement of assets. In contrast, entry barrier is low for smallholders in labour-intensive crop such as spinach, but competition among them, endowed with family labour, bid the rent down to the minimum. Gini decomposition exercise indicates that the emergence of supermarket-driven agri-food system has adverse distributional consequence in rural agrarian setting. Promotion of wholesale market with better infrastructure and encouragement of farmer federation as institutional innovations are suggested for inclusive agri-food marketing system.

Abstract:
Today the requirements for concrete restoration are not only aspects of retrofitting or restoration of bearing capacity but increasingly aspects of preservation of historic structures, such as industrial monuments, civil engineering structures and buildings of the 60s. The Polymer modified self-compacting concrete (PSCC) is a suitable material to be applied in this field, as it not only has excellent mechanical properties (e.g. high bond strength, low Young's modulus) but it is also possible to imitate colours and textures similar to those of the original surfaces. PSCC is therefore an interesting alternative to well established materials, such as PCC, sprayable PCC (SPCC) and shotcrete.Presented in this paper are the results of the further development of PSCC for a particular scenario where due to limited accessibility, the application method and therefore the mix design had to be optimised. Characteristic fresh and hardened concrete properties were investigated and special attention was given to deviation of the fresh concrete with regard to variations in the amounts of source materials. It is shown that although PSCC is a high-performance material, dosage of its source materials, mixing and application of the material itself can be done with simple conventional building site equipment. At the same time a robust fresh concrete as well as excellent surface properties of the hardened concrete can be obtained. Purpose-made mix designs can be developed for various applications with excellent results in performance and appearance.

Abstract:
The presented research work is aimed at investigation of the influence of indoor environmental conditions on employees in office buildings. Monitoring of carbon dioxide, temperature, relative humidity and pulse, as well as subjective evaluation, was carried out in three office rooms where air conditioning systems ensured the required amount of fresh air. Investigation showed that in two offices (A and B), the amount of fresh air did not comply with EN 15251:2017. The concentration of CO2 in office A was above 1000 ppm for 72% of the total length of stay. Respondents confirmed fatigue and headaches. In offices A and B, where CO2 concentration was around 1000 ppm, people with a weight of up to 70 kg experienced a significant increase in air temperature as well as odor. Persons with weight higher than 75 kg experienced a slight decrease in air quality. In office C, where CO2 concentration was around 800 ppm, respondents reported a slight decrease in air quality. According to pulse monitoring, it can be stated that in an office where there is an insufficient supply of fresh air, the pulse of a person falls or only slightly rises. A decrease in pulses may indicate the attenuation or stunning of people caused by poor air quality.

Abstract:
Background: Talar body osteonecrosis can be a difficult condition to treat. Recent reports highlight a high rate of failure with the use of femoral head allograft. Additionally, higher rates of failure have been reported in diabetics and smokers. Our institution attempted a novel technique utilizing fresh allograft talus in attempt to improve on a reported 50% nonunion rate. Methods: Five patients who underwent tibiotalocalcaneal (TTC) fusion utilizing fresh talar allograft were clinically and radiographically reviewed to evaluate fusion rates and functional outcomes. Results: Our case series of 5 patients had a 100% union rate, including 2 former smokers and 2 diabetic patients. There were no infections or complications. Functional outcomes also improved in our series of patients postoperatively as noted by their FAAM and SF-36 scores. Conclusion: TTC fusion using fresh allograft talus has a higher union rate than reported with femoral head allograft. This case series requires further study to evaluate whether this technique can be used beyond patients with osteonecrosis of the talus. Level of Evidence: Level IV, case series.

Abstract:
Aiming at the problems in the performance improvement of the fresh food e-commerce supply chain, in this article, the author defines the constraints on the performance improvement of the fresh food e-commerce supply chain and determines the demand to improve performance in quality and safety, logistics traceability, resource integration, and benefit distribution. In addition, this article conducts coupling analysis on the characteristics of blockchain technology, such as intelligent contract, information sharing, traceability, and performance improvement requirements. The author embeds the alliance chain in the fresh food e-commerce supply chain and designs the blockchain information platform model from four levels: application layer, contract layer, network layer, and data layer, with the purpose of optimizing and improving the performance of the fresh food e-commerce supply chain. What is more, the Stackelberg game model between the supplier and the e-commerce platform was constructed to study and compare the profit changes of the fresh food e-commerce supply chain before and after the application of the blockchain information platform. Finally, the result of Stackelberg game is numerically simulated by Matlab software. The results show that blockchain technology is a booster for the development of the fresh food e-commerce supply chain to a higher stage of the whole industry chain management, coordination, and integration. Investing in the blockchain system within a certain budget range can not only improve the reliability of products, but also improve the performance of each main component of the fresh food e-commerce supply chain, as well as the overall performance. Results can offer a theoretical guidance for producer and retailer in investing in BIP, pricing decision, and supply chain coordination after applying BIP.

Abstract:
This research aimed to understand the flow of fish commodity, information, and financial in the fish supply chain at the traditional market, through case study in the Beringharjo market Yogyakarta. Data was collected through systematic interview with 18 fish businesspersons and observation on the study site. The study showed fish commodities in the market consisted of marine, freshwater and processed fish (salted/dried fish and soft bone milkfish/bandeng presto). The fish majorly supplied by suppliers from outside Yogyakarta, that reached 86-90% for fresh fish (marine and freshwater) and 100% for salted fish and raw material of bandeng presto. Suppliers and traders in Beringharjo market used flexible methods of payment, such as manual receipt and trust-based relation (for instance pay on other day). The suppliers and traders had been work together for more than five years. The emerging problems were the lack of fresh fish supply and the low quality of processed fish. The supply chain model for fresh fish involved three stages (supplier-seller-ultimate customer/household) and the supply chain model for processed fish in four stages (supplier-wholesaler-trader/seller-ultimate consumer). The supply chain model for the milkfish also consisted of four stages (supplier-fish processor-seller-ultimate consumer). The study indicates the importance of improving local fish production systems to fullfill growing fish consumption in DIY.

Abstract:
The case is all about the journey of an entrepreneur Mr. Musthafa with his venture iD Fresh Foods India Ltd. Back in 2006 with a humble beginning, as a small store selling Idli and Dosa batter at Tippsandra, Bengaluru, iD at 2018, has grown multi-fold, presented in over 21,000 stores, 17 cities and is planning to expand to 30 cities in next few years. A number of accolades in its hat like “Best food marketing idea 2016”, “Vocational excellence award 2016”, “Best packaging design award 2015” and many other appreciations, “iD Fresh Food” would be a great case study for the B-school students or students of other business management courses and would add value to the marketing or entrepreneurship literature. This case study specially examined the marketing strategies adopted by the company to establish itself in the cluttered RTC (Ready to cook) packaged food sector in an emerging market scenario. The issue of the case is to examine whether the company should diversify or continues its basic philosophy of serving natural preservative free packaged food items and how far the closely-knit management style is going to sustain its market leadership position in future.

Abstract:
Urban food systems primarily rely on foods grown in rural spaces, and often face challenges in creating spaces to grow fresh, healthful and affordable food in cities. Urban food harvest organizations aim to overcome these challenges by locating and harvesting food that already exists in cities on the numerous fruit- and nut-bearing trees located on public and private lands. Hidden Harvest is a leading initiative for urban fruit and nut harvesting in Canada, and unique in its for-profit social enterprise model. The organization aims to legitimize and support the practice of harvesting fruits and nuts in urban areas, and provides a means to increase access to—and availability of—fresh, healthful foods hyper-locally in Ottawa, as people harvest from their own (or nearby) neighborhoods. This field report examines the challenges and opportunities faced by Hidden Harvest in attempting to link multiple social, environmental and economic goals relating to food sovereignty, social justice and ecological sustainability. In particular, the organization seeks to establish a self-sustaining business model through innovative solutions and the development of networks with local food processes, food organizations and businesses, which enables Hidden Harvest to grow and develop distinct ties and relationships in Ottawa. This case study reveals how organizations such as Hidden Harvest use food to enhance and tie together local economies, knowledge, food security and community well-being.

Abstract:
Safety of food in the fresh market has been a critical issue for many countries, including Thailand. In this study, data related to the criteria pertaining to food safety in selected fresh markets in Thailand are collected and analyzed using selective analytical methods to understand the perspectives of stakeholders in food safety system. In particular, our study considered 2 methodologies in the analysis-1) Mixed Method Research based on questionnaires and interviews with an aim to analyze stakeholders’ behaviours and 2) Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), one of the Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) tools, with an aim to analyze criteria weights for food safety. Our case study was conducted at two fresh markets in Ubonratchathani province in Thailand: Municipal Market and Donklang Market, by collecting samples of vendors and consumers. It was found that vendors considered rental arrangement as the most important factor with weight 0.5489 (54.8 percent), whereas consumers concerned with the market building and related environment the most with criterion’s weight 0.2480 (24.80 percent). This initial result can be used for further analysis of fresh market layout and design, subject to viewpoints of stakeholders.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to determine growing degree day (GDD) for pomegranate fruit Shishe-Kab cultivar and study the phonological stages of fruit from bloom to harvest. A completely randomized block design was carried out on the research orchard of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Birjand, 2017. During the May to October, the diameter and length of the fruits and calyx were recorded using the non-destructive method by a digital caliper on the tree. Next fruit samples were randomly taken from the trees to determine fresh and dry weight. Furthermore, by using the metrological data, the thermal requirement based on the growth degree day (GDD) has been determined from April until harvest day. The effective heat requirement for Shishe-Kab cultivar that was calculated from blooming to reach maturity was 2560.95. The highest cumulative temperature was recorded in the commercial harvest date. By receiving this degree day, fruit reached the highest fresh and dry weight, length and also diameter at the end of growing season. The results indicated that all fruit characteristics significantly increased from the first recording day till the end, except the ratio of fruit length to diameter. A slight decrease in growth rate was presented in fruit diameter and length, which was concomitant with their seed hardening. Results showed that calyx diameter and length of pomegranate fruit has a slow continues liner growth pattern, fruit length and diameter exhibited a double sigmoid growth curve, while the fresh and dry weight followed a single sigmoidal curve. By determining the fruit growth pattern under climatic conditions, it is possible to determine the length of growing season and the critical stages of growth for proper management in the garden.

Abstract:
Vertical electrical sounding has been carried out in a coastal area in the southern part of Bangladesh to locate the groundwater aquifers containing fresh water. The Interpex1X1Dv3 computer program was used to process the field apparent resistivity data sets obtained from the vertical electrical sounding. Geoelectric layers were identified in the context of resistivity and thickness from the vertical electrical sounding data. From the initial parameters layered model was achieved using the inversion technique. Correlation of the obtained layer model with a nearby lithologic log concludes the groundwater aquifer system of the area. From the electrical properties of the subsurface layers, water bearing layers were detected and characterized. Very fine sand geoelectric layer with a thickness varying from 20 to 143 meters is an upper aquifer and has 0.66–14.02 Ωm apparent resistivity value. Fine sand geoelectric layer with 0.21-5.99 Ωm apparent resistivity value is lower aquifer with maximum thickness ~250 meters. From the resistivity value, it is observed that the upper aquifer contains saline to brackish-fresh water while the resistivity value of the lower aquifer indicates that it contains saline water. The water quality of the upper zone varies geographically from the southern to the northern part in the investigated area. The water quality of the upper aquifer is fresh in the northern part of the study while lower aquifer contains saline water there.

Abstract:
Abstract. In many parts of the world, freshwater is already a scarce and overexploited natural resource, raising concerns about global food security and damage to freshwater ecosystems. This situation is expected to intensify with the FAO estimating that world food production must double by 2050. Food chains must therefore become much more efficient in terms of consumptive water use. For the small and geographically well-defined Australian mango industry, having an average annual production of 44 692 t of marketable fresh fruit, the average virtual water content (sum of green, blue and gray water) at orchard gate was 2298 l kg−1. However, due to wastage in the distribution and consumption stages of the product life cycle, the average virtual water content of one kg of Australian-grown fresh mango consumed by an Australian household was 5218 l. This latter figure compares to an Australian-equivalent water footprint of 217 l kg−1, which is the volume of direct water use by an Australian household having an equivalent potential to contribute to water scarcity. Nationally, distribution and consumption waste in the food chain of Australian-grown fresh mango to Australian households represented an annual waste of 26.7 Gl of green water and 16.6 Gl of blue water. These findings suggest that interventions to reduce food chain waste will likely have as great or even greater impact on freshwater resource availability as other water use efficiency measures in agriculture and food production.

Abstract:
During treated wastewater transport, phenomena related to the presence or absence of dissolved oxygen (DO) have been observed. In Tenerife reclaimed urban wastewater (RUWW) transport from the capital, Santa Cruz to the south of the island for agriculture reuse was studied. Anoxic conditions and H2S generation were noted during transport. As RUWW has an electrical conductivity (EC) of about 1600 μS/cm, BALTEN decided to add fresh water (FW) with low EC, saturated or over saturated in DO at an intermediate point in the pipe to reduce the conductivity of water supplied to agriculture, also thus reducing the organic load and consequently H2S generation. However, injection of DO over-saturated fresh water brought on the appearance of nitrification and later denitrification. A study was carried out of H2S generation, nitrification and denitrification during RUWW transport with and without added FW.

Abstract:
Aquifers along the coastal regions around the world are facing severe level of saline water intrusion problems. Rapid development and the associated increase in groundwater withdrawals intensify the problem. Extensive mapping of migration and extent of salt water plumes is difficult and costly. Several surficial geophysical methods have been developed for measuring salinity levels in coastal aquifers. The present study is an attempt to delineate the saline water and fresh water intrusion in parts of west coast of Maharashtra, India. A total of 86 vertical electrical soundings were carried out using the Schlumberger configuration. The contour maps for Dar-Zarrouk parameters viz. the transverse resistance (T), longitudinal conductance (S), and coefficient of anisotropy (λ) were computed at 84 sites to generate the resistivity regime of saline and fresh water bearing formations. The results exemplify that the Dar-Zarrouk parameters provide a practical elucidation in demarcating the saline and fresh water aquifers, particularly when the resistivity data interpretation encounters constraints due to intermixing of saline water aquifers, fresh water aquifers etc. Several NE-SW and NW-SE oriented major lineaments and its cris-crosses have been observed in this region.

Abstract:
Common bean fresh pod is a niche market product consumed worldwide including in Eastern Africa region. It is more preferred to dry bean due to the fresh taste and ease to cook. A lot of research has been done on production and disposition of dry bean product; however, little information is available on production and marketing of fresh bean pod in Uganda. The general observation indicates wide consumption of fresh bean pods however, there is limited information on its entire value chain, yet, its value cannot be undermined. Based on this background, a reconnaissance study was undertaken in Mpigi district, a major fresh bean growing area and eight retailing markets within Uganda’s capital, Kampala, to understand the economic feasibility of fresh bean pod market. Using qualitative approaches, farmer and market analysis was conducted to explore and understand fresh bean market dynamics. The results show that there are over 10 varieties being sold for fresh pod, unstandardized weight measures are being used, and price variation of over 50%. Additionally, unsatisfied demand for fresh pod beans is 45%. The results indicate existence of a lucrative fresh pod market valued at more than USD 2.0 million within Kampala and suburbs. It was also revealed that production faces significant gaps in seed availability to ensure consistent quality supply to the market while at selling points, bronzing effect was a major challenge leading to product deterioration. Thus, interventions are needed to eliminate the existing production and marketing challenges for a sustainable fresh bean pod business.

Abstract:
We present an optimization model for dragon fruit plantations in Vietnam. The timing of cultivating and harvesting decisions are taken into account as the dragon fruit plant has an approximately ten-year life cycle with maximum average yield in the fourth year. Another consideration also included is the prevalence of forward-buying contracts with locked-in prices. The dragon fruit supply chain faces several difficulties as yield, price, and demand are highly sensitive to weather conditions and global uncertainty factors. The risk factors in the dragon fruit supply chain also depend on species—for example, the red varieties, while more profitable than the white varieties, also have higher export risk because they are subject to global prices and adverse geopolitical conditions.
