Abstract:
Considering the market need and customer attraction, automakers are always trying to define new projects and present products with new capabilities in the market. That is why a significant part of car companies’ development research is focused on the definition of new projects. Principally, project risk management in car companies is essential and thus given special attention. There are different theories and methods of project risk control. However, since there is complete awareness of FMEA-related issues (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) in automotive companies due to the establishment of the quality management system, the project's risk analysis using FMEA method to control the risk of automotive industry projects is presented in this paper by a real example. For this purpose, FMEA indicators tables are designed and presented proportionally to project risk management. Results of this research show that using failure mode and effects analysis for project risk management ensures the detection of project's weaknesses and provides a practical model for identification and reduction of project risks.

Abstract:
Sustainable building projects have levels of complexity over conventional building projects that challenge current project management tools at efficiently managing the rigors of sustainable projects. The Continuous Value Enhancement Process (CVEP) is a recently developed tool designed specifically for sustainable building projects. This project management tool enables project teams to systematically generate and evaluate project alternatives for meeting sustainable goals. The goal of this tool is to identify high performance solutions that increase levels of sustainability and improve project performance. CVEP was experimentally implemented and tested on four case study projects to evaluate its ability to support project management decision making in ways that elevate sustainability and project performance. Reported in this paper, the results show CVEP produced first cost and life cycle cost savings. In particular, the study confirms that CVEP has the capability to: 1.) Provide a systematic evaluation process, 2.) Collect high performance building solutions, and 3.) Be applicable to different project types. These results show that it is possible to employ targeted project management techniques, like CVEP, to improve the cost-effective provision of sustainable buildings.

Abstract:
Purpose – In recent years, many development projects of the medical systems encounter difficulties and eventually fail. Failure is often due to very complicated and changeable medical procedures and the inconsistent understanding between system stakeholders, especially the healthcare providers, and information technology staff. Many research results also indicate that poor communication easily results in negative consequences during the implementation of the medical information system. To effectively overcome this obstacle, the purpose of this paper is to propose an enhanced Delphi method to assist in reaching consensus during the software development with some additional steps. Design/methodology/approach – As an alternative to the traditional way to elicit pertinent feedback from respondents, the enhanced Delphi method stresses the systematic, flexible, and cyclic stages to construct a questionnaire with viewpoints from different types of panelists and a self-assessment procedure as a validating step to measure the improvements in the system implementation. Findings – The better communication between the members of project team does increase the comprehensive assessment of a project. Originality/value – Based on a practical case, the enhanced Delphi method really demonstrates good performance and effectiveness.

Abstract:
Sustainable development represents a major challenge of the 21st century. Organizations use projects to implement strategic corporate objectives, exploring sustainable development from a project management perspective is imperative. While current project management techniques are well defined in terms of content and process to manage the budget-scope-time constraint, availability of organization resources and ability to adopt project governance strategies in a changing business environment, like incorporating sustainability in business process is ambiguous, literature has not explored how to cope with a normative situation like sustainability. We consider Small-to-Mid-Size-Construction-Organizations (SMSCOs), which makes up the largest portion of the project-based industry and are most impacted by new government regulations, as our population of interest. This paper addresses two primary objectives in relation to organizational resources available for SMSCOs: to identify an organization's shortcomings in undertaking a sustainable project, and to identify means for improving organizational readiness to cope with governance of sustainable projects. A case study with a SMSCO to understand activities, resource availability, and how to improve organization readiness to undertake projects related to sustainability is discussed. A conceptual framework is presented for the adoptive project governance process to ensure resource constrained organizations like SMSCO's can align better to govern such projects.

Abstract:
The influence of stakeholders and stakeholder management on project uncertainty is examined, and particularly uncertainty regarding functionality delivered by projects. The case studies, two projects in the Norwegian Rail Authority (Jernbaneverket), included interviews with representatives of internal and external stakeholders and also examination of project documentation. In addition, conflicts and use of power between stakeholders in the projects were studied. The projects actively managed relations with external stakeholders, thereby reducing the risks of negative media attention and neighbour disputes, and also cost and time overruns that such disputes may cause. Both of the projects focused on risk reductions regarding costs and time schedules, and less on the functionality delivered by the project. While mastering potential conflicts with external stakeholders well, the largest project appears to have handled internal disputes less convincingly. The smaller project handled internal disputes well, but experienced problems concerning both costs and time schedules.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Project Management has already moved beyond the realms of an "orderwinning"- criteria to a "necessary-to-survive"-criteria. Increasingly people are drawn into project management without the correct qualifications or sufficient education in project management, especially in the area of project risk management. This project details the development of a case study in project management to facilitate this educational infilling in the services industry. This case study is based on a fictitious SPR project at an IT development company. The developed case study is an alternative project for the post-graduate course in Project Management at the University of Stellenbosch's Department of Industrial Engineering. Additionally, a tutorial in Microsoft" Project 2000® was also developed as supplementary material to this course.

Abstract:
In the current market situation today which is changing rapidly, many companies have decided to adopt the project-based organisational structure. However, the literature on this area has been lacking, particularly in the multi-project environment. This is an important subject to explore since it has a substantial impact on a company’s productivity. Therefore, the purpose of this work is to expand the knowledge on project resource management in multi-project organisations. The methodological approach of this work was a case study, where interviews and observations were conducted at a large PBO running multiple new product development projects. The unit of analysis in the case was the way of working in projects and PRM techniques used in the context of two new product development projects. Waterfall Method and APM was identified as two fundamental ways of running a project. Additionally, RBS and RBV, Kitting, CONWIP and Project Freezing and finally CCPM were identified as techniques that can be used in project management. Several similarities and differences were identified when comparing the case study with previously conducted studies. Particularly, similarities regarding the experienced pressure and how resource conflicts caused by this were managed. Lastly, improvement proposals to current PRM techniques were identified. By using both Waterfall Method and APM together, their strengths could be combined. Moreover, HRM has become an increasingly more important task for the line managers, which should be taken into consideration when stating the work description. The results of this study will contribute both theoretically and practically. This work supports the evolution of the PRM techniques by evaluating them in a practical context. Finally, the conclusions of this work provide recommendations which are more practically applicable for PBOs.

Abstract:
Millions of people around the world consider project management as their major task in their profession, yet the demand for project managers is still increasing. To face this demand many organizations use consultants as project managers for their projects. However, the literature in project management tend to ignore potential differences between internal project managers and consultants as project managers. This thesis is written on commission for LKAB which is a Swedish mining company who conduct around 60-80 projects yearly. Projects at LKAB is managed by internal professional project managers, internal line-managers and consultants as project managers. Despite having three different categories of project managers LKAB has little knowledge about potential differences in how they manage projects. Thus, the purpose of this thesis is to make a case study on project managers at LKAB in search to answer our research question: How do internal project managers, line-workers and consultants manage projects differently? To answer our research question we developed a theoretical frame where we present research which we suggest have given an answer towards the previously discussed question if project leadership has a direct impact on project success or not. Research has found that project leadership has a direct impact on project performance which we consider crucial since it impact the relevance of our study. In our theoretical frame we also present research in outsourcing, project planning and organizing, education, perspectives in project management and theories of project management competencies and skills. There are two perspectives in project management, task perspective which focus on achieving the project objectives and the organizational perspective where they emphasize the relationship between the temporary organization and the permanent organization where main focus is to create value for the receiving organization. To gather data we conducted nine semi-structured interviews in Kiruna with three line- mangers, three internal professional project managers and three consultants which has been hired as project managers by LKAB. We found support to a previous study which showed that project managers have different perspectives towards project management. Furthermore, we found a connection between the project managers perspective and how they prioritized between project goal or effect goal. Project managers with an organizational perspective consider the effect goal to be more important than the project goal and vice versa. We also found that line-managers as project managers do not plan their projects, or manage risk in the same way as professional internal project managers or consultants.

Abstract:
Digitalization in the modern economy creates a productivity platform that is regarded by many experts and researchers as the 4th industrial revolution. The dramatic increase of the project management related software development, combined with the decreasing costs of these solutions, have spurred a remarkable interest in these digital PM-solutions reducing the gap between the theory and practice of project management. The selection process of a feasible digital project management solution can be a highly demanding task for any organization regardless of the field it operates in. The aim of this study is to define the concept of project management digitalization, but also to evaluate how project management work can be further developed and supported by digital project management solutions. This research has a qualitative nature, and it is a empiria driven inductive case study, supported by a literature review. As a part of the case study, project management experts within the Supply Chain Engineering (SCE) -unit of Nokia have been interviewed. The empirical case study consists of a current state analysis and requirement specification of project management in Nokia MN/BM/SCE, but also from a comprehensive feasibility study of three state-of-art digital project management solutions available in the markets: JIRA, HP PPM and MS POL. A digitalization proposal was given for the case company on how to proceed in the project management digitalization journey, and what commercial solutions need to be taken in use. These digital PM-solutions can support project planning, execution, monitoring and controlling, but also make projects more predictable and manageable in terms of schedule, costs and quality. This study is strongly tied to recent development trends in the web- and cloud-based Project Management Information Systems (PMIS) and Decisions Support Systems (DSS), that set the basis for defining the new concept of project management digitalization. Several theoretical and business managerial conclusions can be drawn based on this study, that support the project management digitalization pursues of various organizations. Thus, most of the conclusions and results of this study can be exploited in organizations operating in other industries as well, especially when the target is in initiating the project management digitalization journey.

Abstract:
In the context of a growing social complexification, projects have evolved in the pastdecades from simple endeavours to complex and uncertain undertakings. Consequently, project complexity has emerged as an important research direction, and recently severalproject complexity frameworks have been suggested. However, little research has beendone in this area and there has been no study on the relationship of project complexity,in its holistic sense, and the risk of delay. Therefore, the study investigates the intricaterelationship between project complexity and project delay. The research is conducted inthe context of Enterprise Resource Planning system (ERP) implementation projects, which are inherently complex and often record delays. The study has a qualitative nature and adopts an inductive approach. Nine ERPimplementationprojects have been studied in order to answer the research question.Several sources of evidence (semi-structured interviews and questionnaires) have beenutilized to ensure the credibility of the research findings through triangulation. The study contributes to the research field by verifying and augmenting the existingframeworks on reasons for project delay, complexity categories and their interplay. Itwas identified that complexity in a holistic sense represents a necessary condition forproject delay. Moreover, the study showed that although ERP projects are oftenconsidered to be technically complex, their complexity stems mainly from ‘subjective’(or perceived) and ‘uncertainty’ complexity dimensions. Finally, the conceptual modelof Eden et al. (2005) was modified to reflect the findings of the study.

Abstract

In recent years funding aid operations has dramatically increased, along with the concern about the real impact of its initiatives. Despite considerable amount of money have been invested world widely and a great number of projects already implemented changes have been considered inconsistent. As a result, major donors are pressuring Non governmental organizations (NGO) to evidence their achievements and legitimate their cause. There are several factors which distinguish the NGO as unique within project management environments, such as the social accountability claimed and the nature of the impact aimed. Therefore, traditional project management practices might not be suitable in the case of NGO’s project. This study analysed project methods most applied for NGO’s project and discussed about it accountability challenges related to project management. Willing to further understand how in practice NGO managers are dealing with those challenges, a case study was developed with a NGO that works with environmental issues. As a result, it was evidenced that practical methodologies are applied to embrace the organization own needs. It was apparent that project management methods were adapted to the institutional purpose, even though adjustments might not be completely in accordance with internal procedures. Project management tools are assumed as a semi structure basis and can be adjusted if the work is justified. A flexible approach relies on the trust and expertise of the organization staff. As a conclusion, it was evidenced that NGO’s projects carry particular aspects and expectations over project accountability and management methodologies must be adapted and complementary methodological approaches are being developed.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2015.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Mega projects have fascinated human beings for as long as history can remember. The urge to build something bigger and better than has ever been done before has always been a driving force behind the human race’s relentless pursuit of technological advancement. It is in this vein that mega projects have evolved over time, as methods of construction improved, so did the scale on which people could attempt new projects. The Channel Tunnel between England and France, the Hoover Dam in America and the Millau Viaduct in the French countryside are some of the biggest examples of infrastructure projects in the world and these are all unequivocally, mega projects. Costing at least $ 250 million and incorporating major technological challenges, mega projects continue to inspire and motivate artists and engineers alike. This thesis seeks to expand people’s understanding of the analysis of these mega projects. Mega project analysis is a field that has struggled to differentiate itself ordinary project analysis. The Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) and the associated e-tolling mega project will be analysed in this thesis. The framework for analysis will be provided by the work of Flyvbjerg, Bruzelius and Rothengatter (2003), who seek to analyse mega project success or failure based on three key indicators of economic sustainability, environmental concerns and the effect of public support. This thesis will use the indicators of economic sustainability and the effect of public support to determine whether the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) can be viewed as a failed mega project or not. After an in-depth study of the data and material available, this descriptive and explanatory study shows that the GFIP and associated e-tolling mega project is indeed a failed mega project. This is because it has failed the analysis in both categories of economic sustainability and the effect of public support.

Abstract:
The recent increase in international projects has resulted in higher risk along with difficulties in control and coordination. Effective project management can therefore be seen as being essential to the success of projects. The purpose of this paper is to understand how a large multinational company currently handles these issues. This paper conducts a case study that will look at the relationship between contingencies and their effects on project risk management. The findings show that although project risk management handles contingencies in standard projects it still requires improvement within complex projects. Therefore, based on research into agile project management a concept is proposed as an alternative for the case company to select project management method.

Abstract:
AbstractWe present an application of the operational monitoring tool SIPRIUS+ to an ongoing case study representative of urban brownfield regeneration projects: the Pôle Viotte neighbourhood, located in Besançon (France). We start with a description of the brownfield site, followed by the regeneration project. Then, we evaluate 52 indicators linked to the context, project, and governance. Each monitoring result is illustrated by a graph showing the evolution of the performances. Then, we analyse the overall results, which allows us to assess the sustainability strategy of the regeneration project. Through this analysis, we identify four actions to improve sustainability objectives. Finally, we conclude that SIPRIUS+ has the potential to contribute to the integration of sustainability issues into the dynamics of neighbourhoods in transition. The operational monitoring tool is expected to contribute to decision-making in a multi-disciplinary manner, without giving ready-made solutions. Interactions with project stakeholders reveal that, while the use of such a tool would require a change in project management, the evolutions to adopt to include this practice appear not only feasible but realistic and desired.

Abstract:
The Generator Recovery Project Case Study is a technical paper that will discuss a project which started with a simple open, clean, and close of a 40MW air cooled generator and turned out to be much more. The unit experienced a gradual increase in winding temperatures over the last several years, with a more notable increase in phase B temperatures. In the history of the unit, it was observed that the unit became contaminated with carbonaceous deposits due to the environment in which it operated. Routine cleanings during scheduled outages were successful in lowering the increased temperature trends. With today’s market environment and an increasing commonality of extending outage intervals, the routine outage interval had been extended to 7 years from the previous outage. The scope of work was to remove the rotor, clean, inspect, test and return the unit to service in just over one week’s time. The requirements of the project were that the efforts be maximized so that the unit returned to service in the most economical means while adhering to practices that would maximize the unit’s availability and reliability. With findings of significant contamination of carbonaceous deposits and significant foreign object damage (FOD), the project lead to overwhelming questions and concerns. The case study will discuss the immediate concerns of the unknown, such as if the core was even recoverable and what was the source of FOD. The case study will walk through the questions raised and the actions taken to first assess the condition of the unit and what actions to be taken to recover the core damage, if at all possible. Most importantly, determining the source of FOD and the rectifications to eliminate future sources of FOD from this area. Detailed information on repair assessments and validation will be presented and procedures for repair and recovery will be discussed. Final testing and validation to return to service will be discussed and the operational characteristics after the repair will be revealed.
