ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Project Management has already moved beyond the realms of an "orderwinning"- criteria to a "necessary-to-survive"-criteria. Increasingly people are drawn into project management without the correct qualifications or sufficient education in project management, especially in the area of project risk management. This project details the development of a case study in project management to facilitate this educational infilling in the services industry. This case study is based on a fictitious SPR project at an IT development company. The developed case study is an alternative project for the post-graduate course in Project Management at the University of Stellenbosch's Department of Industrial Engineering. Additionally, a tutorial in Microsoft" Project 2000® was also developed as supplementary material to this course.
Abstract:
In the current market situation today which is changing rapidly, many companies have decided to adopt the project-based organisational structure. However, the literature on this area has been lacking, particularly in the multi-project environment. This is an important subject to explore since it has a substantial impact on a company’s productivity. Therefore, the purpose of this work is to expand the knowledge on project resource management in multi-project organisations. The methodological approach of this work was a case study, where interviews and observations were conducted at a large PBO running multiple new product development projects. The unit of analysis in the case was the way of working in projects and PRM techniques used in the context of two new product development projects. Waterfall Method and APM was identified as two fundamental ways of running a project. Additionally, RBS and RBV, Kitting, CONWIP and Project Freezing and finally CCPM were identified as techniques that can be used in project management. Several similarities and differences were identified when comparing the case study with previously conducted studies. Particularly, similarities regarding the experienced pressure and how resource conflicts caused by this were managed. Lastly, improvement proposals to current PRM techniques were identified. By using both Waterfall Method and APM together, their strengths could be combined. Moreover, HRM has become an increasingly more important task for the line managers, which should be taken into consideration when stating the work description. The results of this study will contribute both theoretically and practically. This work supports the evolution of the PRM techniques by evaluating them in a practical context. Finally, the conclusions of this work provide recommendations which are more practically applicable for PBOs.

Abstract:
Millions of people around the world consider project management as their major task in their profession, yet the demand for project managers is still increasing. To face this demand many organizations use consultants as project managers for their projects. However, the literature in project management tend to ignore potential differences between internal project managers and consultants as project managers. This thesis is written on commission for LKAB which is a Swedish mining company who conduct around 60-80 projects yearly. Projects at LKAB is managed by internal professional project managers, internal line-managers and consultants as project managers. Despite having three different categories of project managers LKAB has little knowledge about potential differences in how they manage projects. Thus, the purpose of this thesis is to make a case study on project managers at LKAB in search to answer our research question: How do internal project managers, line-workers and consultants manage projects differently? To answer our research question we developed a theoretical frame where we present research which we suggest have given an answer towards the previously discussed question if project leadership has a direct impact on project success or not. Research has found that project leadership has a direct impact on project performance which we consider crucial since it impact the relevance of our study. In our theoretical frame we also present research in outsourcing, project planning and organizing, education, perspectives in project management and theories of project management competencies and skills. There are two perspectives in project management, task perspective which focus on achieving the project objectives and the organizational perspective where they emphasize the relationship between the temporary organization and the permanent organization where main focus is to create value for the receiving organization. To gather data we conducted nine semi-structured interviews in Kiruna with three line- mangers, three internal professional project managers and three consultants which has been hired as project managers by LKAB. We found support to a previous study which showed that project managers have different perspectives towards project management. Furthermore, we found a connection between the project managers perspective and how they prioritized between project goal or effect goal. Project managers with an organizational perspective consider the effect goal to be more important than the project goal and vice versa. We also found that line-managers as project managers do not plan their projects, or manage risk in the same way as professional internal project managers or consultants.

Abstract:
Digitalization in the modern economy creates a productivity platform that is regarded by many experts and researchers as the 4th industrial revolution. The dramatic increase of the project management related software development, combined with the decreasing costs of these solutions, have spurred a remarkable interest in these digital PM-solutions reducing the gap between the theory and practice of project management. The selection process of a feasible digital project management solution can be a highly demanding task for any organization regardless of the field it operates in. The aim of this study is to define the concept of project management digitalization, but also to evaluate how project management work can be further developed and supported by digital project management solutions. This research has a qualitative nature, and it is a empiria driven inductive case study, supported by a literature review. As a part of the case study, project management experts within the Supply Chain Engineering (SCE) -unit of Nokia have been interviewed. The empirical case study consists of a current state analysis and requirement specification of project management in Nokia MN/BM/SCE, but also from a comprehensive feasibility study of three state-of-art digital project management solutions available in the markets: JIRA, HP PPM and MS POL. A digitalization proposal was given for the case company on how to proceed in the project management digitalization journey, and what commercial solutions need to be taken in use. These digital PM-solutions can support project planning, execution, monitoring and controlling, but also make projects more predictable and manageable in terms of schedule, costs and quality. This study is strongly tied to recent development trends in the web- and cloud-based Project Management Information Systems (PMIS) and Decisions Support Systems (DSS), that set the basis for defining the new concept of project management digitalization. Several theoretical and business managerial conclusions can be drawn based on this study, that support the project management digitalization pursues of various organizations. Thus, most of the conclusions and results of this study can be exploited in organizations operating in other industries as well, especially when the target is in initiating the project management digitalization journey.

Abstract:
In the context of a growing social complexification, projects have evolved in the pastdecades from simple endeavours to complex and uncertain undertakings. Consequently, project complexity has emerged as an important research direction, and recently severalproject complexity frameworks have been suggested. However, little research has beendone in this area and there has been no study on the relationship of project complexity,in its holistic sense, and the risk of delay. Therefore, the study investigates the intricaterelationship between project complexity and project delay. The research is conducted inthe context of Enterprise Resource Planning system (ERP) implementation projects, which are inherently complex and often record delays. The study has a qualitative nature and adopts an inductive approach. Nine ERPimplementationprojects have been studied in order to answer the research question.Several sources of evidence (semi-structured interviews and questionnaires) have beenutilized to ensure the credibility of the research findings through triangulation. The study contributes to the research field by verifying and augmenting the existingframeworks on reasons for project delay, complexity categories and their interplay. Itwas identified that complexity in a holistic sense represents a necessary condition forproject delay. Moreover, the study showed that although ERP projects are oftenconsidered to be technically complex, their complexity stems mainly from ‘subjective’(or perceived) and ‘uncertainty’ complexity dimensions. Finally, the conceptual modelof Eden et al. (2005) was modified to reflect the findings of the study.

Abstract

In recent years funding aid operations has dramatically increased, along with the concern about the real impact of its initiatives. Despite considerable amount of money have been invested world widely and a great number of projects already implemented changes have been considered inconsistent. As a result, major donors are pressuring Non governmental organizations (NGO) to evidence their achievements and legitimate their cause. There are several factors which distinguish the NGO as unique within project management environments, such as the social accountability claimed and the nature of the impact aimed. Therefore, traditional project management practices might not be suitable in the case of NGO’s project. This study analysed project methods most applied for NGO’s project and discussed about it accountability challenges related to project management. Willing to further understand how in practice NGO managers are dealing with those challenges, a case study was developed with a NGO that works with environmental issues. As a result, it was evidenced that practical methodologies are applied to embrace the organization own needs. It was apparent that project management methods were adapted to the institutional purpose, even though adjustments might not be completely in accordance with internal procedures. Project management tools are assumed as a semi structure basis and can be adjusted if the work is justified. A flexible approach relies on the trust and expertise of the organization staff. As a conclusion, it was evidenced that NGO’s projects carry particular aspects and expectations over project accountability and management methodologies must be adapted and complementary methodological approaches are being developed.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2015.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Mega projects have fascinated human beings for as long as history can remember. The urge to build something bigger and better than has ever been done before has always been a driving force behind the human race’s relentless pursuit of technological advancement. It is in this vein that mega projects have evolved over time, as methods of construction improved, so did the scale on which people could attempt new projects. The Channel Tunnel between England and France, the Hoover Dam in America and the Millau Viaduct in the French countryside are some of the biggest examples of infrastructure projects in the world and these are all unequivocally, mega projects. Costing at least $ 250 million and incorporating major technological challenges, mega projects continue to inspire and motivate artists and engineers alike. This thesis seeks to expand people’s understanding of the analysis of these mega projects. Mega project analysis is a field that has struggled to differentiate itself ordinary project analysis. The Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) and the associated e-tolling mega project will be analysed in this thesis. The framework for analysis will be provided by the work of Flyvbjerg, Bruzelius and Rothengatter (2003), who seek to analyse mega project success or failure based on three key indicators of economic sustainability, environmental concerns and the effect of public support. This thesis will use the indicators of economic sustainability and the effect of public support to determine whether the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) can be viewed as a failed mega project or not. After an in-depth study of the data and material available, this descriptive and explanatory study shows that the GFIP and associated e-tolling mega project is indeed a failed mega project. This is because it has failed the analysis in both categories of economic sustainability and the effect of public support.

Abstract:
The recent increase in international projects has resulted in higher risk along with difficulties in control and coordination. Effective project management can therefore be seen as being essential to the success of projects. The purpose of this paper is to understand how a large multinational company currently handles these issues. This paper conducts a case study that will look at the relationship between contingencies and their effects on project risk management. The findings show that although project risk management handles contingencies in standard projects it still requires improvement within complex projects. Therefore, based on research into agile project management a concept is proposed as an alternative for the case company to select project management method.

In this paper I present a case study of a Norwegian development project where the development team adopted practices from Scrum in the middle of the development effort. My study shows that the developers were happy with this new development method, and among other things thought it gave them a better focus and structure for their work. Since the team only adopted practices from the Scrum method, I look at the differences between their method and Scrum and suggest a few improvements to their method based on my knowledge of Scrum and development methods in general.

Abstract:
In recent years, organizations have become increasingly interested in the principles of project management in order to enhance the operational effectiveness of their undertakings in terms of planned cost, schedule and quality. However, little has been done in the way of recognizing the discipline of project management as one of the core competencies constituting the competitive differential of the business strategy selected. The main objective of this study is to ascertain whether the processes of the project management discipline fit the strategy of the firm at issue. The study adopted the single case study method, focusing on the government firm Eletrobrás Termonuclear S.A. - Eletronuclear. Data collection was performed in accordance with the method triangulation principle (YIN, 2003), together with 1) documental investigation (printed, telematic, electronic); 2) a perceptions survey using a structured research questionnaire; 3) a complementary perceptions survey through interviews. The data collected was analyzed and interpreted using Macedo-Soares` (2001b) generic integrative model. The results evidenced some inconsistencies between the processes of the project management discipline and the firm´s strategy. They permitted the identification of organizational factors that did or did not contribute to projects´ strategic fit. The study concludes by sharing the lessons for other firms that could be drawn from the Electronuclear case.

Abstract:
This thesis is a case study of the Swedish American Bibliography (SWAM), a special subject database in the Swedish Royal Library’s library information system, LIBRIS. The research intentions are to explore and define the bibliography, and, by resolving issues concerning the responsibility for the bibliography, to fulfill the broader intention of clearing the way for its continuation. During the academic year 2006/2007 the qualitative methods of literature analysis, website analysis, email interviews and correspondence were used for investigating the bibliography. Results of research question one showed the SWAM bibliography’s beginnings and its basis in Swedish cultural heritage. Results of research question two showed the bibliography’s relationship to the Royal Library’s duties and instructions. Results of research question three showed the organization of knowledge in the bibliography’s scope, its digital structure and its accessibility. Results of research question four compared the bibliography to similar Nordic bibliographies. Results of research question five covered the Swedish and North American institutions collaborating on the project to keep the bibliography going and addressed the project member institution representatives’ ideas for the bibliography’s future. In addition to the bibliography material’s significance for Swedish cultural heritage, the conclusions revolved around the need for a combination of open communication channels among the member institutions, a sound financial base of operations and strong leadership and around the Royal Library’s ultimate head responsibility for the SWAM bibliography’s continuation.

Abstract:
It has shown to be a challenge for many actors in the retail industry to adapt to the constantly changing consumer behavior. This challenge is argued to partly be caused by the industry’s pattern to work in silos. Cross-functional projects are the opposite of silos because they involve project members from several different departments that come together to work towards a common goal. Cross-functional projects promote knowledge sharing and are frequently used in development projects to adapt to a constantly changing business environment. This study aims to identify and understand some of the challenges that hinders actors within the retail industry to meet the constantly changing consumer behavior the industry is facing by doing a case study of a development project (Project A) with a cross- functional character in a large Swedish retail company (Company A). 11 interviews were conducted with various project members and several findings were made of the different challenges Project A had faced. One of the challenges was related to the project members struggle to balance their regular work with the work in the project which lead to low motivation from the project members to contribute to the project. Another finding was the challenge to synchronize the different activities in the project. However, the main finding of this thesis is that many of the challenges that occurred were due to Company A’s lack of project competence. How project competence has a direct influence on the project outcome is the theoretical contribution of this thesis to the existing literature and for this a revised model is proposed.

Uncertainty is a very significant factor that must be taken into consideration in project front-end phase management. By taking into uncertainty, the planners can to a great extent make sure that the business case could be accurate between specific intervals, hence business case can be based on to make decision. In a highly uncertain environment; the project sponsors should prefer other means to finance the project rather than using debt. Risk management is extremely important in project financing; its role is to guarantee the project will have a positive cash flow to cover the loan and interest. Cost overrun and time delay are lethal in projects financed by means of project financing. Project management hence should put much emphasis on cost and time management

Abstract:
Over the next several years in North America, the power grid needs to be revitalized and extended to deal with aging infrastructure, capacity constraints, and the pursuit of renewable energy sources. In Canada, and particularly the province of BC, very significant complexity and risk is involved in the approval, design and construction of such projects given highly variable terrain and weather conditions, the multiplicity of the environmental, First Nations, and third part stakeholder issues involved, and challenging regulatory and procurement processes. Described in this research is a holistic approach to the identification of risk as a function of project context, the representation of which is made difficult in the context of transmission line projects because of their large spatial scope and the vast volume of data of different types to be distilled and analyzed. Central to the approach is the representation of a project within an integrated environment in the form of multiple views of a project – product, process, participant, environment and risk. Treatment of the first four views aids the identification of risk drivers for a risk event. Knowledge of risk drivers assists with expressing likelihood of occurrence of a risk event and the magnitude of impacts should it occur, and selecting the most appropriate risk response. Application of the approach to a 255 km 500 KV design-build transmission line project is featured and challenges involved in developing its risk profile highlighted. How data visualization can assist development of a project’s risk profile and facilitating insights into it is also demonstrated. The use of the holistic approach described for the development of a project’s risk register and mining its contents using data visualization to generate useful insights has proven to be of significant value to project personnel.

Abstract:
Follow-up is a natural component of both project management and projects which, curiously enough, the research community has not previously addressed. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of the follow-up process in project management. The follow-up process is defined as a process where execution and implementation is improved through the exertion of continuous control. The method used was a multiple-case study, building on data from four organizations actively implementing follow-up processes. The data comprised interviews with project managers from the case organizations, company documentation, annual reports, publicly available information and presentations. The sectors the case organizations operated in were IT services, manufacturing, event organization, and a governmental administrative authority. Five themes emerged from an analysis of the empirical data which were found to influence the follow-up process in projects. The five themes are Documentation, Standardization, Accountability, Learning and Risk Assessment. With insights from the five themes, the research community and project managers can gain a strong understanding of what the follow-up process looks like and its role in project management. The implications for project managers include a better appreciation of the follow-up process and knowledge of the aspects to consider when setting up a new project process. With this paper the authors hope to contribute to the improvement of project management research and practice through a heightened awareness and understanding of the follow-up process.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was to explore what challenges are identified in project portfolio management (PPM) in an internal multi-project environment. The aim of this study was to find the underlying reason for the occurrence of challenges in terms of how these challenges occur, and why do they occur. To realize the purpose and the aim of the study, the research was conducted at ABB Components, a business unit of ABB Group. Further, based on identified challenges provide a set of guidelines and recommendations for managing and countering the challenges. To understand the research problem a literature review was employed and a case study was conducted at ABB Components. The purpose of the literature review was to gain a theoretical background related to the research topic, identify challenges or problems, and potential solutions, with the purpose of establishing a connection to the challenges identified in the case study. The empirical work consisted of the case study conducted at ABB Components and was constituted by interviews person. The analysis of the results was validated with a workshop held with interviewees, with discussions regarding the findings. Guidelines and recommendations for managing challenges related to project portfolio management were designed from the results of empirical and theoretical work. The 11 main challenges related to project portfolio management were identified throughout three defined project phases, initiation of a project, execution of a project and project closure, and was appearing either in one phase or across phases. The challenges in this research were correlated to four main causes; limited resources (budget & time), limited resources (personnel), vague directives, and project maturity. The identified challenges can be encountered and managed by utilizing existing models for project management, improved information handling, expanding the notion of criteria for project success, performing a resource capacity analysis, and planning for the project closure. The theoretical and practical work have contributed to a collective analysis of what types of challenges are evident in phases throughout a single project, and what outcomes these challenges can have on a project portfolio in an internal multi-project environment and . It has to some extent indicated differences among challenges and causes evident in multi-project settings, for projects that are classified as internal development or product development, implicating differences throughout the project phase. Furthermore the challenges have pivoted around the three main themes centered indicating that there are challenges related to each phase of the project life, as well as challenges which are apparent across the project phases.

Abstract:
The implementation of an Identity and Access Management (IAM) solution is a complex process to manage, consuming multiple years and involves organizational changes. In its nature, several challenges tend to appear to different stakeholders involved in the process. However, prior research has mainly addressed the technical components of an IAM-solution, hence the technical challenges that emerge during development and implementation. Therefore, the non-technical challenges of the IAM-project work and the challenges that constitute the client implementation are understudied. The purpose of this thesis is to visualize the challenges that emerge when an IAM-solution is implemented. In addition, the challenges when organizational changes occur. The empirical data is conducted through a series of semi-structured interviews with individuals in the IAM line of business. In addition, secondary data is gathered through the review of papers and reports in Information Systems (IS) and Information Technology (IT) projects and outsourcing projects, as well from a non-academical organization with in-depth knowledge of IAM implementations. A qualitative case study of IAM implementations was conducted to investigate the studied complex phenomenon. The findings display the challenges of Insight, Communication, and Endurance (ICE), which tend to be obstacles for all stakeholders involved. Additionally, the organizational changes describe three further challenges of Anchoring, Communication, and Vision (ACV). These challenges mainly appear in client changes, which IAM implementations initiate. The thesis display connections and incoherent with prior research on IS/IT-projects and IAM-projects. In addition, newly uncovered aspects that contribute to research areas are highlighted. The thesis is summarized with some implications and possibilities for future research.
Dessutom samlas sekundär data in från informationssystem (IS) och informationsteknik (IT) projekt samt outsourcingprojekt.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the present thesis was to evaluate the impact of the ‘Schools on the Move’ project, a pedometer-based intervention aimed at promoting physical activity in young people aged 9 to 13, by using qualitative and quantitative methods along dimensions of the RE-AIM evaluation framework. A second purpose was to identify which factors accounted for the success or failure of the intervention. A case study analysis involving six schools (3 primary and 3 secondary) was conducted in two stages: (1) within-case analysis and (2) cross-case analysis. In within-case analysis, each case was examined in-depth in order to identify what happened, built an explanation, and identify causal links about the case. In cross-case analysis, the factors that could possibly be associated with greater or lesser impact of the intervention were investigated. Specifically, implementation factors, adoption factors, and context (school and socio-regional) were examined to explain variation in project’s impact among schools. The findings indicated that the project had some positive effect in terms of increasing physical activity levels and awareness of health benefits of physical activity. Given the high dropout rates noted in all schools, these findings pertain only to the pupils who remained in the project. Differentiating schools with more or less impact, the results of cross-case analysis indicated that primary schools were more successful than secondary schools. Support provided to children during the implementation of the project appeared to explain variation between less or more successful schools. In primary schools, children were more intrinsically motivated, valued, and enjoyed the project more. In addition, primary school age children, while participating in the project, felt more competent, autonomous, and related to each other. In conclusion, the high dropout rates suggest that the pedometer-based intervention was not acceptable by the participants and that the sustainable use of pedometers was not feasible in the schools. It is hoped that this evaluation in ‘real-world’ settings will inform to better design and implement school-based physical activity interventions.

Magro, Jean Pierre. "Producing a European native transmedia project : a case study." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/16480.

Full text
Abstract:
The delivery of fiction across multiple platforms is becoming an increasingly important component of the contemporary media landscape. Transmedia storytelling is no longer a mere buzzword. Content creators, seeking to expand the lifespan of their IP’s and their revenues, are looking for ways to exploit the migratory consumption patterns of today’s media users. However, to date, storytellers have been unable to fully exploit the possibilities transmedia provides. This practice-led PhD was inspired by the necessity to understand transmedia at a stage when a new grammatical language for creators is needed, as well as updated business models. Rather than examining transmedia from an exclusively theoretical standpoint, this work uses The Tower of Fables, a project created to re-launch fairytales to the hyperlinked kids of today, as a case study. Using research and subsequent assessments, this work aims to shed light on the current situation in Europe, examining the forces at play that influence the way practitioners conceive and design a fictional world meant to unfold across distinct media. Media production is always subject to external pressures, influences and constraints. This practice-led PhD offers a breakdown of the actual development phase of my native transmedia project. Every choice is backed up by a series of theories in the hope that these practical guideposts can be used by others. The finished work was then taken to the market with the intention of investigating the aesthetic and industrial implications on the creative and financing process, and ultimately to evaluate how they affect the final product. From this it was concluded that media convergence does not necessarily lead to industry convergence. This thesis formulates a case for the urgent need of the creation of formats to facilitate dialogue between creators and investors.

Abstract:
Due to its inherent characteristics such as ubiquity, personalization, flexibility, and dissemination, mobile commerce promises business unprecedented market potential, greater productivity and higher profitability. With this in mind, it is perhaps not surprising that mobile commerce is growing much faster than its fixed counterpart. Unlike e-commerce, m-commerce is personalized and there is a need for a novel approach to evaluating risk management in m-commerce projects. Result in the increase of risks management in m-commerce. Besides the business core activities, the increased use of derivative products by both financial and non-financial institutions and recent events or scandals continue to demonstrate the need for enhanced standards and processes of control over risk. In this thesis, I attempt to introduce a new method for performing risk analysis studies by effectively utilizing the existing risk management process framework with adoptions of analysis approach in m-commerce projects. It will provide a sequencing of the core part of the risk management process into sub-processes for identify context, identify risks, analyse risks, evaluate risks and treat risks in different respects of m-commerce. Moreover, it seems that the integration of risk management process and some analysis method indeed provided very useful new insights. To be able to fulfil the purpose of study, qualitative research method was considered, using an inductive approach of a single case study of m-commerce project in Trollhättan with m-commerce related research literature and scenario for development of restaurant in university west as source of data. Based on the analysis, a number of observations were put forward in the conclusion. To begin with the strategy in relation to management structure will be considered. In addition, the role of information technology security is considered in risk management. Meanwhile, the good governance and risk management according to m-commerce application in risk management system and corporate governance are included in the discussion. In attempt of risk management in the m-commerce projects, this thesis examines the issues in one case of m-commerce project in Trollhättan not only information secure issues and some technical viewpoints in m-commerce project but also from the project management's perspective. The contribution of the thesis will be introducing a new framework/module for performing a risk analysis studies in m-commerce projects domain and a proposal for risk management in the m-commerce projects case of Trollhättan.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to create a deeper understanding of why collaboration projects emerge. The background of the study is the fact that collaboration projects are increasing in the society and being impelemented in the welfare. This is the basis of the researched question, why does Lund municipality tend to start collaboration projects within the welfare for young people? The study is conducted as a case study on a chosen project, ComUng. ComUng is a collaboration project that works with youths who are at risk of alienation. Interviews, text analysis and a web survey have been used as methods to find out why collaboration projects emerge. The results have been analyzed using an analysis tool based on research by DiMaggio and Powell (1983), which attempts to identify why organizations become increasingly alike. This phenomenon is called institutional isomorphism and is analyzed using three mechanisms: coercive isomorphism, mimetic isomorphism and normative isomorphism. The result of the study is that primarily two out of the three mechanisms have influenced the formation of ComUng. These are coercive isomorphism and normative isomorphism. The main difficulty I experienced during the study is the low frequency of answers to the web survey. Despite of this I believe the case study of ComUng can contribute with knowledge about why collaboration projects are formed. The conclusion is that a combination of a mindset shared by the personel and the resource possibilities from an external actor, in this case the European Social Fund, are the primary factors that have enabled this project. Previous research has tended to focus on the external resource. However, I believe that the personel and their opinion on how welfare can be operated are equally important.

Abstract:
The contemporary globalisation of economic activities has enormously accelerated the pace of innovation and technology development throughout the world. Continuous transformation of the marketplace and tremendous growth of demand on knowledge-intensive products and services has led to further evolution of knowledge management and project management studies. Increasing number of research done on knowledge management aspects within project environment evidences the expanding interest on the two areas of study. Incubators, representing the accumulators of knowledge management practices which facilitate the innovation and entrepreneurship through start-up projects, encompass vast number of issues for investigation related to the mentioned study areas. Past researches done in incubator field mainly concerned with the knowledge management aspects, neglecting the project management perspectives on it. Only few articles were found which refers to both fields of study within the incubators, although with an emphasis on project management models as catalysts of innovation. Our research basically aims to explore, examine and illustrate both knowledge management and project management interrelationship, in the context of incubators. It provides with a conceptual model, which depicts the contribution and correlation of project management, organisational knowledge management and project specific knowledge management. Based on the observation and analysis of the empirical data collected using the IT knowledge-based risks model as our methodological framework, it was found that incubators do not share the same knowledge management challenges as IT companies. Combining the conceptual model derived from the findings of literature review, and the methodological framework, we developed a new model representing knowledge management challenges in the management of start-up projects within incubators. Out of ten challenges observed in the IT sector, our research finds eight main challenges in incubators that are related to knowledge management. According to the perceptions of the interviewees chosen from a sample of three incubators in Sweden, the main challenges are (i) handling business coach exit, (ii) communicating lessons learned, (iii) creating knowledge map, (iv) establishing knowledge network, (v) selecting appropriate team, (vi) storing knowledge from previous projects, (vii) integrating different expertise and (viii) transferring complete knowledge. Each of the mentioned challenges was placed in each of the three domains defined in the conceptual model, in order to accentuate the domain it directly affects or is mostly affected by.

Abstract:
In a period of time where big data awareness and its implementation tools are constantly evolving, the parallel area of big data projects is growing. Organizations are now at a stage where they understand what big data is and have an idea about the competitive gains they can reap from it. Consequently, it is important to understand how to pass on to the next stage: the implementation of big data within an organization. This study uses the case study method to explore which critical success factors (CSF) exist for the successful implementation of a big data project. Data in the form of an interview and materials were collected and analyzed about two units of analysis (2 projects). A search for patterns among the 2 units was performed and compared with the previously reviewed literature to derive a list of observed CSF. The main CSF found were:(i) choice of a case that is quantifiable, central to the business and fast to implement; (ii) top management sponsorship; (iii) knowledge of the power relationships inside the organization; (iv) appropriate Hadoop tools, and (v) a team with proven implementation experience.

Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 105-107.
Educational projects offering an alternative to the traditional, formal system are increasing in number. Many hold ideals of participative learning and the development of personal autonomy but are also committed to a particular political vision. The interest of this case-study lies in the consideration of how such educational values may interact with a call to support and act upon a set of beliefs. This tension between open-ended educational work and directed action is a central problem in Paulo Freire's pedagogy. Freire talks of consciousness-raising as the process by which people become aware of the political implications of their personal situations. He advocates experience-based learning but also has an analysis of society which 'conscious' people are to realize. Conscientization, in these terms, is caught between a desire to have people take responsibility for their own learning and to teach a specific view of society. The learning process thus comes into conflict with the curriculum content with priority necessarily being given to one over the other. Freireian concepts such as dialogue, praxis and transformation are central to many alternative educational projects although they are frequently ill-defined, containing contradictions and creating confusion. This may be reflected in their organizational structures as well as in their outreach work. This study considers the relationships between learning and action, individuality and unity and equality and expertise so as to articulate the difficulties faced by the project under discussion. The aim of this study is not to provide a set of solutions for the project to adopt but rather to define areas of concern so that the project itself is better able to determine its own direction. The means by which these areas are uncovered and shared with interested parties is therefore of central importance. Thus the limits and possibilities of participant-observation as an evaluative approach are explored with particular interest in the setting up of the contract, the definition of the problem and the communication of the insights gained back to the project stakeholders. The project selected for this case-study is 'End Racism and Sexism through Education' (E.R.A.S.E.), a small, Cape Town based initiative.

Abstract:
Today, organisations are increasingly using project-based activities, as projects can aid organisations to deal with unique and complicated assignments, as well as achieving strategic and operational goals. Two extensive project management methodologies exist, those being Traditional Project Management and Agile Project Management. Agile methods trademark change, adaptability, and flexibility, and are today used across industries and business, as the characteristics of the methodology make it suitable in today’s dynamic business environment. Even though projects are increasingly being used, it is inconsistent with the remarkably low project success rates found. It has been found that only 30 per cent of projects are successful within the technology field. Consequently, this stress the need to understand the inconsistencies found as well as generating suggestions for how to improve them. It is arguable that the inconsistencies may be caused by the difficulty to define project success. Researchers argue that the definition of project success is difficult to pinpoint as it varies depending on both individual perspectives and situational factors such as the organisation and the project type. It is also questionable whether or not appropriate methods have been used to evaluate the success of a project, and that the use of inappropriate methods may have contributed to the low success rates. Researchers argue that the traditional way of evaluating project success, by adhering to schedule, cost, and scope, is outdated and incomplete, and some have therefore developed new models that they consider more accurate for evaluating project success. One of these researchers is Highsmith, one of the founders of the Agile Manifesto. Highsmith has developed the Agile Triangle to better correspond to the agile trademarks of change, adaptability, and flexibility when evaluating success on agile projects. This study aimed to contribute with new insights into theoretical and practical aspects of agile project success by studying agile project success from a project manager perspective. This thesis also aimed to generate an understanding of project managers’ perception of the Agile Triangle as a success criterion. We interviewed seven Swedish project managers who have all worked with agile projects. After thoroughly analysing the results we could create a definition of agile project success as well as develop an Agile Project Success Criteria Model, representing the view of Swedish project managers. Agile project success was defined as a project that generates value in a sustainable manner. The agile project success criteria found important within this study are: Value, Team Success, Quality, Business Benefits, and Constraints. It was also found that Flexibility, even though it should not be included as a success criterion itself, is still a key ingredient when using Agile Project Management methodologies, as it affects all important success criteria. These findings highlight the insufficiency of the Agile Triangle as a success criterion, as Team Success and Business Benefits, criteria additional to those within the Agile Triangle, were found important. It was also found that the project managers question the practical applicability of the Agile Triangle and consider it to be similar to the Iron Triangle.

Abstract:
When discussing the professional aspects of the work of women teachers, it is usual to include the vocational factor as a main element. The question of vocational education incorporated progressively in the training period progresses. Teachers themselves talk about this as something that already appears in their childhood as an explicit desire to dedicate to teaching. With the project «Peruvian Women Teacher’s» we approach the opinions on this and other issues. The process of preparation of the project in Lima initiated includes interviews with twenty-one women. Most teachers insist on their vocational precocity, especially those who working in poverty environments. We use case studies incorporating video through Arts Based Research. Art Education try to make visible the identities of the female teaching group. It is a tribute, but also a professional claim. Participants are teachers of different ages and particular situations. We have again verified that the vocational component is present in personal narratives.

Lundell, Fredrik, and Victor Roxlin. "Achieving a strategically aligned project portfolio : A case study on the Project Portfolio Management activities of selecting projects and allocating resources in a matrix organisation."

Abstract:
Project portfolio management (PPM) is considered a central part for achieving intended strategies for organisations. However, only a percentage of strategies are actually realised, and whilst much previous research has focused on the formulation of strategies, less has been directed towards the realisation. To gain further understanding of how PPM can contribute to realising strategies, this thesis studied the PPM activities of selecting projects and allocating resources, and related challenges when trying to achieve a strategically aligned project portfolio in a matrix organisation. A qualitative case study was performed at a pharmaceutical production company in Stockholm referred to as Medex. An abductive research approach was used, and the data was thematically analysed whilst striving to achieve triangulation. The study was divided into a pre-study and a main study consisting of a total of 15 semi-structured interviews with participants at different positions within the organisation, in parallel to the collection of secondary data from Medex’s intranet.    The study indicate that it is a challenge for a matrix organisation to align projects to strategy through project objectives, and that it is rather project values’ strong connection to strategy that provide a clear link between projects and strategy. It further suggests that using project value for linking projects to strategy can increase the understanding of the motivation of project priorities, as well as creating a foundation for determining if the allocation of resources is oriented towards strategy. Furthermore, the study demonstrates the challenge and necessity for top management to base their decisions on sufficient and reliable information. Moreover, the selection of projects must be performed in accordance with available resource capacity, which highlights the need for strong connections between short-, medium- and long-term resource allocation. Furthermore, the study emphasises the need for a structured way of evaluating PPM processes to improve and address associated challenges. Additionally, the high competition between resources in a matrix organisation is depicted and the study indicates that a strong focus on profits can limit the possibility of achieving a strategically aligned project portfolio. While the study is based on a single case, the findings can be regarded as transferable, at varying extents, to other companies of similar size and organisational structure as well.

Stakeholder relationship management is a key component for the successful design, implementation and operation of complex and socially controversial projects, yet a discipline that is often misunderstood or underrated. In a world were socially controversial projects have become and will continue to be ever more frequent and important, the need to improve the knowledge of stakeholder relationship management in controversial projects is very important. The objective of this report is to contribute to scholarship on stakeholder relationship management by using a newly developed system dynamics model developed at MIT called, the Golay-Williams stakeholder acceptance model. The model seeks to better illustrate complex stakeholder relationships, their dynamic nature and what must be done to gain enough support to ensure project success. This paper studies an emblematic U.S. controversial project, the Cape Wind offshore energy project, located in the Nantucket Sound in Massachusetts, in order to test the model capabilities to represent complex stakeholder dynamics and best practices in stakeholder engagement. The assessment of the Golay-Williams model derived from the Cape Wind Project case study, suggests that the Golay-Williams model can contribute significantly to the successful management of stakeholder relationships on socially controversial projects..

Abstract:
Hydropower helps countries meet their energy needs in an economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable way while saving money and increasing energy security and self-reliance. Being one of the fastest developing countries, electricity demand of Turkey has been increasing and is expected to increase in the future. Untapped hydropower potential is among the prospective alternative resources to supply this demand. Developing a hydropower project requires a great deal of expertise in multiple disciplines. RETScreen software developed by CanmetENERGY helps the planners and decision makers to assess the feasibility of renewable energy projects at the pre-feasibility and feasibility stages. This study is an application of RETScreen to assess the feasibility of alternative formulations for Niksar HEPP, a small hydropower project which is under construction in Turkey. Three alternative formulations are generated and their economic performances are evaluated and compared. First, optimum design discharges are calculated and then economical analysis is conducted for various electricity export rates by RETScreen for all the alternatives. This study provides a detailed literature review on hydropower and its economical, social and environmental aspects, and shows how RETScreen can be used in assessing the economical feasibilities of the current formulation for Niksar HEPP and its alternative schemes.
