Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Information Technology))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2017.
Over the past decade there was an increase in the availability and usage of cashless payment methods in Africa. Cashless payments allow users to make payments without using cash, and offer multiple benefits to both customers and merchants. These benefits include reduced costs, improved sales, improved security, convenience, etc. However, despite the increased variety, availability and popularity of cashless payment solutions in Africa, the usage of cashless payments methods in Africa is still mostly limited to money remittance and retail payments. While formal traders such as retailers are slowly adopting and reaping the benefits of cashless payments, the large majority of informal traders across the continent are yet to adopt cashless payments and still limited to use cash as their main (and often only) payment method. How cash and cashless payment methods differ from the informal trader’s point of view is not known yet; this study seeks to understand why cashless payment methods are yet to gain popularity amongst informal traders and meanwhile cash is widely adopted and used. This research analyses the characteristics, needs and limitations of informal traders and evaluates the ability of both cash and cashless payment methods to satisfy their payment needs.

Abstract:
Bachelor final work examines e-banking services of the commercial banks operating in Lithuania, for the period of year 2006 – 2010. The first part presents the theoretical aspects of electronic banking. The second part of the work presents the carried out analysis of electronic banking services: the figures of established banking income from electronic banking services were quite unevenly distributed; the number of users of electronic banking is increasing for all banks. Non-cash payments were compared to the cash payments, which showed that most non-cash money is used for transactions of large sums of money. The evaluation of payment card operations showed that residents of Lithuania in period of year 2006 – 2010 tended to pay with cash, but this trend should change in the future. The correlation – regression analysis showed that there is inverse relation between non-cash payments and cash payments and direct relation between non-cash payments and Lithuanian’s GDP. The qualitative assessment of prospects for online banking showed that e-banking in Lithuania continues to grow.

Abstract:
With the emergence of near-field technology (NFC), mobile terminal have become a true instrument of contactless payment. This type of system is a new opportunity to boost the electronic payment systems (EPS) for the micropayment. The objective of this research is to develop a model and measurement tools to handle and to identify factors influencing the acceptance of these systems. Based on the paradigms of the acceptance of technology and research around the SPE, we have developed a conceptual model which integrates the UTAUT and TTF. This model allows both to consider the adoption strategies of individuals and their intention to adopt. Indeed, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use and facilitating conditions are no longer sufficient for a technology to be adopted. The capabilities of this technology have to match the tasks that the user will perform. Our result have been measured and validated thanks to structural equations analysis of data collected from a sample of 629 individuals

Abstract:
Sweden is known for being at the forefront of becoming a cashless society. However, cash continues to be an important part of the payment ecosystem butthere are limited studies and data regarding the preference for holding cash. Previousstudies have shown that the use of cash is declining with regards to comers and thatthere are behavior differences between cultures and sociodemographic groups inregards to characteristics and preferences for payment methods. The aim of thisstudy was to investigate the informational attributes that drives the preference forholding cash by studying two extreme cases, Sweden which is a pioneer of cashlesssociety, and Germany which is one of the most conservative cash-intensivecountries in the Western world. Primary quantitative data was derived fromstandardized questionnaires issued in both countries by Loomis AB; the data wasdescribed and analyzed with applicable statistical procedures. A multivariate analysiswas performed on a specific segment of the collected data were the respondents hadbeen asked to rate cash associated statements based on their agreeableness towardsthem. These segments were then examined through a Principal component analysisto determine the underlying dimensions regarding preferences for cash. Our resultssuggest that Germans withdrew cash more frequently, from a wider spectrum ofdenominations and carried it to a larger extend than Swedes. Swedes made limitedwithdrawals, of small denominations and preferred to carry smaller amounts of cash. The results also show that there were differences in the perception and preferencesfor cash between sociodemographic groups, with e.g. older age groups being used to itand the youngest using it due to ‘status quo bias’. The main conclusions include thatthe informational attributes such as security, anonymity, ease of use and paymentinfrastructure was the main drives for the preferences of holding cash.

Money is whatever is generally accepted in Exchange for goods and represents a temporary adobe of purchasing power to be used for buyng still other goods and service. the coming of the checkless and cashless society will involve a shift from the check or document system to an electronic system. The order will be transmitted via electronic impulse initiated at a terminal in the merchant's establishment. The merchant will be paid at the instant of the cardholder's order transmittal by means of a credit to his account: the cardholder's account will be debited at the same time. In Italian civil code art. 1277 there is nominalistic principle that applies to fluctuations in the value of money , that means if an obligation to pay one euro was incurred in 2010 but payable in 2020, it remains an obligation to pay one euro. This paper analyze the evolution of concept of money and the consequences about nominalistic principle, paying attention to different way to perform the duties of money obligation.

Abstract:
The digital payment industry has become one of the fastest evolving markets in the world, but in the wake of its rapid advancement, an ever increasing gap between academic theory and the actual reality of this market widens - and especially so when it comes to entry theory. It is widely acknowledged that the world is moving towards an ever more homogeneous economy, but despite the fact that payment preferences differ greatly from country to country - research on this subject continues to revolve mainly around localized efforts. But as historical inequalities between poor and rich societies continue to dissipate - learning from nations at the forefront of technological advancement increases the likelihood that the developed strategy becomes applicable to an increased number of countries. By selecting a nation most conducive to technological growth, the purpose of this report is to map the present dynamics in its digital payment industry using both recent and traditional market entry theory. However, studies geared towards globalized strategy formulation cannot be assumed as having guaranteed access to internal company-data at all times. So in order to facilitate such studies, the level of dependency on primary data required for conducting such research needs to be understood first, which is why the work in this report is constrained strictly to data of secondary nature. This, not only to further map the characteristics of this market, but also to see how open the market is to public inspection. Ultimately, the academic contribution becomes that of providing a road-map towards adapting currently available market entry theory to suit the rapidly evolving conditions of the digital payment industry from a global perspective and, when failing to do so, the aim is to also explore avenues for further research towards this end goal.

Abstract:
Around the globe, countries move away from banknotes and coins in the favor of digitized payments. A number of findings from academic research conclude various benefits associated with decreased cash usage, such as enhanced economic development, less costs for governments and banks, financial transparency as well as lower economic-related crime rates. In a light of various benefits moving towards cashless payments, it is hypothesized that there also could be a relationship between how innovative a country is and how much cash circulates in economy. The relationship could be both-sided like less cash circulation can trigger innovation and, at the same time, adoption of cashless payments could be driven by how innovative a country is. To be able to investigate a potential correlation, a correlation analysis is conducted between the two variables: an innovation level of a country and cash circulation in econom. The Global Innovation Index score will be used to summarize various factors that provide an overview of national innovation performance, and percentage of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will be used for currency in circulation. According to the findings, the hypothesis that there is a correlation between cash circulation and innovation performance in a country could not be rejected with a 5% significance level.

Bachelor final work examines e-banking services of the commercial banks operating in Lithuania and compared with EU countries, USA, South Africa, Russia, China, Brazil and Australia. The first part represent the theoretical aspects of electronic banking: sorts, devices, advantages and disadvantages. The second part of the work represent the carried out analysis of electronic banking service in Lithuania and other selected countries. Based on cashless payments, payment cards, ATMs describing indicators, Lithuania is very similar with other countries in e-banking devices using but in cashless payments operations values Lithuania is at the lowest positions in the context of the analysed countries. The correlation-regression analyse showed that there are five factors which determine the cashless payments in Lithuania: the average monthly average, the number of unemployed, the number of payment card in country, inflation, cash withdrawals from ATMs value. The qualitative analyse of prospects for e-banking showed that e-banking in Lithuania will grow: the number of e-banking consumers continues to grow, consumers’ service platforms will become more modern and safer.

Abstract:
Rapid digitalisation development has been stampeding widely across today’s societies, and not least in the payment industry. Though, the digitalisation in the payment industry has been very deviating, even between similar well-developed countries, and while there are positive and negative effects with both digital- and physical payment means, there is little knowledge that highlights the influencing factors and accompanied problems. This study therefore explore swhich, and how, different factors influence a country’s degree of digital payments, and creates further understanding of where the payment markets are heading in the future. It is done through a case study of four different industrialised countries, Sweden, Italy, Canada, and Switzerland which involves mapping the countries’ payment markets, as well as potential factors influencing a population’s payment habits, through a perspective of innovation theory in terms of dominant designs and technological discontinuities. Theory of network externalities and two-sided platforms are further used to explain and discuss how a two-sided market, likethe payment market, is affected by changes and other circumstances in different ways. Conclusions are then drawn from the used theories together with a comparison of the findings, and identifies certain influencers to a country’s distribution of payments, as well as provides indications of where the different payments markets are heading in the future. Data is mainly gathered through written material and credible databases, but also from semi-structured interviews.

Pratheeba, S. "A Theoretical Framework To Measure Diffusion In Intermediary B2B Market : A Case Of Electronic Payment Systems (EPS)." Thesis, 2012. https://etd.iisc.ac.in/handle/2005/2473.

Full text
Abstract:
Electronic Payment Systems (EPS) are gaining popularity all over the world. An EPS consists of many component technologies which facilitate cashless payments for services. The focus of this thesis is on device associated technologies that an end customer uses to initiate an e-payment for a particular service via a Payment Service Provider (PSP). A technology solution in an EPS is developed by a Payment Solution Developer (PSD). The market between a PSP and a PSD is a B2B market. A PSD must understand and develop that combination of technology and service which will successfully diffuse. The success of a PSP therefore depends a lot on what a PSD develops. A theoretical framework to measure diffusion of e-payment technologies, services and their combinations in the B2B market was developed and empirically assessed in this thesis. Two concepts namely concept of breadth and concept of spread were defined. The concept of breadth and spread were applied to e-payment technologies, services and their combinations. The derived concepts namely technology breadth, service breadth, technology spread, service spread and technology-service combination spread were defined and measured. We then extended the concept of breadth to understand utilization of technologies and services within an EPS. Set theory was used to describe the framework. A sample of 45 EPS was compiled from various sources. This secondary data of EPS consisted of 8 technologies and 16 services. The 8 technologies are Interactive Voice Response (IVR), text messaging using Short Messaging Service (SMS), text messaging using Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD), mobile internet using Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), mobile application, Near Field Communication (NFC), Personal Computer (PC) internet and smart card. The 16 services are retail shopping payment, banking, health payment, insurance payment, mobile bill payment, mobile recharge, money transfer, movie ticket booking, parking fee payment, restaurant payment, payment at sports/swimming club, toll payment, transportation payment, tuition fee payment, utilities payment, and vending machine payment. Three categories of PSPs namely core payment service providers (n=18), non-core payment service providers (n=12) and merchants (n=15) were identified from the 45 EPS. Binomial proportion test was used to verify the concepts of breadth and spread. Spearman correlation was used to find correlation between the concept of breadth and spread of technologies and services. The 45 EPS in the sample were then grouped under three sub groups based on the categories of their PSPs. Binomial tests were used within each sub group to understand the preferences of technologies, services and their combinations by each category. The results verified that certain e-payment technologies possess more breadth i.e., capability to deliver many e-payment services and certain e-payment services possess more breadth i.e., delivered by many e-payment technologies. A difference in diffusion i.e., spread of technologies, services and their combinations were observed. Details of these differences are discussed in this thesis for technologies, services and their combinations. A positive correlation was observed between the concept of breadth and spread. Specialization of technologies, services and their combinations within categories of PSPs were observed. Variations in utilization of technologies and services by EPS were observed.

Cashless mobile payment has become an important trend in the world. This study investigates the relationships among consumers’ positive and negative cognition, affection, and usage intention on mobile payment by adoption the tricomponent attitude model as the theoretical background. The results indicate that trust is the key factor of continuance intention in mobile payment. Affective trust has a stronger effect on continuance intention than cognitive trust does. Both brand identification and similarity have significant and positive effects on affective trust. Brand identification is the most important factor of cognitive trust. In addition, cognitive trust is the most important factor of affective trust. Both ambiguity and information privacy concerns have significant and positive effects on perceived uncertainty. Information security concerns do not have a significant and positive effect on consumer perceived uncertainty which subsequently has a significant and positive effect on discontinuance usage intention.

Abstract:
Currently, the payment methods developed by traditional Portuguese banks accelerate the transition to a cashless society. A cashless society is, by definition, a society where cash, that is, the metallic currency and the paper currency, must be replaced by electronic or even digital payments, and this reality is strongly supported by the banking sector. This dissertation is divided into six parts. Initially, a review of the literature on the subject is made, then a model and research objectives are presented, followed by a description of the methodology to be used in the research, as well as the analysis of the results obtained and, finally, the limitations of the analysis and the conclusions reached are presented. In order to identify the challenges of traditional Portuguese banking for a cashless society, a questionnaire was carried out with a sample of the Portuguese population and six interviews with individuals representing the Portuguese population. The results obtained confirm that banks should develop payment methods that are easier to use and understand from the users' perspective, increase their acceptance network, reinforce the security of cashless payment methods, and use more assertive and explanatory communication for the population.

Abstract:

The rapid evolution of mobile-based technologies and applications has led to the development of several different forms of digital payment methods (DPMs) but with limited enthusiasm in consumers for adopting them. Hence, several academic studies have already been conducted to examine the role of various antecedents that determines consumers’ intention to adopt DPMs. The degree of effect and significance of several antecedents found to be inconsistent across different studies. This provided us a basis for undertaking a meta-analysis of existing research for estimating the cumulative effect of such antecedents. Therefore, this study aims to perform a meta-analysis of five antecedents (i.e. attitude, cost, mobility, price value and innovativeness) for confirming their overall influence on intentions to adopt DPMs. The results of this study suggest that the cumulative effect of four out of five antecedents found to be significant while influence of price value was found insignificant on behavioural intentions. The recommendations drawn from this research would help to decide if and when to use such antecedents for predicting consumer intention to adopt DPMs.

Abstract:
Organizations act in very dynamic and rapidly changing environments, wherein they face multiple exogenous shocks that threaten their sustainability and competitive advantage. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that firms continuously adapt and change their strategies to find a fit with the changing environment in order to guarantee survival and remain competitive. Scholars have developed management literature on the importance of strategic change on firm’s alignment with unstable and dynamic environments. Moreover, the Dynamic Capability view, which illustrates how firms can achieve sustainable competitive advantage and cope with the changing ecosystems, has gained increased awareness over the years. In order to demonstrate a real-life example of Strategic Change and the dynamic capabilities' theory in action, this dissertation examines the case of SIBS's digital transformation. The teaching case focuses on SIBS' changing process, strategic reorientation and also examines how, by introducing MB WAY, SIBS coped with the payments industry's dynamism. This case clearly illustrates the firm’s imminent need for strategic change and the importance of the company’s use of dynamic capabilities to successfully adapt to the external environment and enact superior performance.

Digital payment methods (DPMs) are evolving fast but they are yet to be widely adopted particularly in the developing countries. An initial review of literature suggests that several studies have already been conducted on this topic for understanding antecedents of digital payments adoption. However, only a few studies have examined this emerging topic in the context of developing countries. The aim of this submission is to identify antecedents of consumer adoption and usage of digital payments methods. The results of this literature analysis suggest that constructs related to technology acceptance model (TAM) and unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) along with trust and risk are the most frequently examined constructs for determining consumer’s behavioural intention to use and usage of DPMs. The findings from this work can help researchers selecting factors for inclusion in the future empirical works on this topic.
