Abstract:
This paper explores Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” in terms of the author’s turbulent magazinist career which has often been overlooked or omitted from the academic analysis. As he wrote of himself, Poe was “essentially a magazinist,” the nineteenth-century term for a working journalist, editor, and reviewer. While critics influenced by post-structuralism tend to construe Poe’s texts irrespective of the authorial presence, the biographical approach is not an outdated mode of investigation in Poe scholarship. Eventually, “The Cask of Amontillado” appears as a personal fantasy of revenge against the powerful cliques, editors, publishers, and the New England literary establishment as a whole in the 1840s, rather than a simplistic tale of revenge against the paternal figure.

Abstract:
Wort-case scenarios depicted in literary works may function to mourn and warn people about the real situation, such as the spread of COVID-19 that has altered worldwide life drastically. This study offers a reflection on the current pandemic time through a close reading of selected American classic literary works. The imagination of fear, isolation, and mask-wearing in Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories is resonant with the new expressions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Three short stories by Poe, i.e., ‘The Masque of the Red Death’, ‘The Cask of Amontillado’, and ‘The Sphinx’ are chosen for examination using the thematic analysis method. Repeated reading of the short stories shows that parallels can be drawn between these stories and today’s phenomenon about anxiety, social restriction, and health protocols. What can be implied from the analysis are as follows: (1) Fear of the disease results in the characters’ added distress, (2) The characters’ aberrant behaviour as to overprotect themselves is exacerbated by the dreadful situation, and (3) Poe’s obsession with dread and death to shock the readers can be historically traced through his own inner predicaments, ill-health, and the 1832 Cholera contagion. In conclusion, the findings resonate with the COVID-19 epidemic’s upshots.

Este artigo busca teorizar e analisar o Gótico e a representação deste estilo em alguns contos de Edgar Allan Poe, sendo eles O Poço e o Pêndulo, Os Fatos do Caso do Sr. Valdemar, Berenice e O Barril de Amontillado. Utilizando a pesquisa bibliográfica, buscamos entender o terror e mistério, assim como o horror, nas obras de Poe por meio de Cortázar (1974), Vanspanckeren (1994), Silva (2012) e Matroca (2017), teorizando sobre os temas que encontramos nos contos poeanos e a relação deles com o estilo literário gótico e com a sua própria persona, que reflete em suas produções. As temáticas de suas obras estão, em sua maioria, voltadas ao terror e mistério, com personagens melancólicos e isolados, resultados da mente de um dos maiores escritores norte-americanos da história da literatura.

Abstract:
Lexical cohesion has been a serious issue as it is one of the important features in a text. Every writer must consider kinds of lexical devices in writing a text and so do the translator. The main problem in translating the lexical cohesion devices is the different structure between two languages. One device can be applied in one language but not in other language. This journal analyzed the translation of reiteration as part of lexical cohesion devices appeared in the short stories The Black Cat and The Cask of Amontillado written by American writer, Edgar Allan Poe. The short stories were translated by two Indonesian translators namely Anton Kurnia and Shinta Dewi. This research is conducted to share the practice of translating literature works especially a short story which contains a lot of lexical cohesion devices and to give contribution to the development of translation as part of linguistic studies. In doing the research, qualitative and quantitative method is applied including observation, interviews, or document reviews. In the source text, it was found 120 of lexical cohesion devices in the short story ”The Cask of Amontillado” and 187 lexical cohesion devices in the short story “The Black Cat”. The results obtained from this research were that Anton Kurnia translated 73% of lexical cohesion devices in the source language into the target language. Meanwhile, Shinta Dewi translated 94% of lexical cohesion devices in the source text to the target text.

Abstract:
The article examines the notion of point of view (POV) in translation by drawing on examples from selected Polish translations of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Cask of Amontillado. First, the paper deals with the question of narratologically-oriented research in translation studies and outlines a short history of the concept of point of view with an overview of definitions proposed by literary scholars. It is argued that recent linguistic analyses of point of view have contributed to examining the notion of POV in literary translations. The article also systematises different research approaches that have been developed to study “point of view in translation.” Finally, the paper follows the linguistically-oriented conception of point of view in order to examine translation shifts with regard to the linguistic indicators of POV, including time markers and modality, based on examples from Polish translations of Poe’s short story.

A união entre Análise do Discurso e Literatura mostra-se cada vez mais frutífera, uma vez que a AD fornece métodos teóricos eficientes para a análise de todo tipo de discurso, permitindo ir além dos limites linguísticos do texto, analisando-os mais profundamente. Nessa perspectiva, nosso estudo objetiva investigar a cenografia como elemento essencial no processo de construção do ethos discursivo do narrador no conto O Barril de Amontillado de Edgar Allan Poe, escrito em 1841 e publicado em livro em 1846. Privilegiamos como aporte teórico-metodológico a Análise do Discurso de linha francesa, em particular, os estudos propostos por Dominique Maingueneau (2005, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2015) sobre a noção de cenografia e de ethos discursivo identificados pelas marcas linguístico-discursivas presentes na narrativa em questão. O resultado desta análise se torna bastante relevante para entendermos como a cenografia contribui para legitimar um enunciado, tornando-se um elemento ativo e essencial no processo de construção da imagem de si no discurso narrativo. A pesquisa evidenciou que as cenografias instituídas pelos discursos no conto em análise influenciaram diretamente na construção da imagem do enunciador, ou seja, o “ethos assassino” do personagem Montresor.

Edgar Alan Poe and Edith Wharton found a way to give their own stories more realistic descriptions and details. The objectives of this research paper are to compare Poe’s The Cask of Amontillado (1846) and Wharton’s Roman Fever (1934) to know how these tales are structured, to describe how their methods works and how similar they can be. To meet these objectives, both stories were read and analysed so that every foreshadowing clue could be detached from the texts and organized in two tables, Group (1), concerning physical elements, such as titles, names of characters, and objects described, and Group (2), concerning events that took important roles in the stories, such as past events and confessions of the hideous crimes. After gathering all this information together, it was possible to compare those two tables and realise that both authors do have a particular way of thinking about the logic behind the plots by leaving clues throughout the stories that may be only recognized when the reader gets to the end. <p> </p><p><strong> Article visualizations:</strong></p><p><img src="/-counters-/edu_01/0771/a.php" alt="Hit counter" /></p>
