Casque-headed tree frogs (Lophyohylini) can have a very large and distinctive head characterised by hyperossification of their cranial skin. This type of skull was primarily associated with phragmosis, a behaviour in which the frog enters holes backwards and seals them with its head to prevent water loss in challenging environments. Further investigations revealed that hyperossification also gives rise to bony spines interspersed with skin poison glands. These peculiar anatomical features of the head make it challenging for predators to prey on the frogs in phragmosis. When bitten on the head,

An interesting hypothesis suggests that species with intermediate states, with sex chromosomes but also thermal-induced sex reversal at specific incubation temperatures, could be more susceptible to sex determination turnovers. The tadpole of Itapotihyla langsdorffii is described and illustrated. Morphological data are compared with available information on tadpoles of casque-headed frogs occurring in the Atlantic Rainforest (genera Aparasphenodon and Trachycephalus), and also with Osteocephalus. The ontogenetic shift in tooth row formula and the great similarity on tadpole external morphology among these genera do not allow the use of the examined larval characters on generic diagnoses. However, we present some juvenile characters which may support the validity of Itapotihyla. The confrontation of the hypotheses con

ABSTRACTParreira. I.P. 2025. Age structure and size variation in three closely related species of casque‐headed frogs of the genus Trachycephalus (Hylidae: Lophyohylini)—Acta zoologica (Estocolmo). This study provides insights into longevity, sexual maturity and growth curves in closely related casque‐headed treefrogs distributed across distinct Brazilian biomes. Age estimation based on the counting of lines of arrested growth (LAGs) in bone tissue revealed a longevity of 6 years in Trachycephalus nigromaculatus and T. atlas, which is uncommon among Neotropical species.
