Abstract:
The essay examines Cassola’s fiction on the Italian Resistenza, focusing on the short story Baba (1946), the novel Fausto e Anna (1952), and the short novel I vecchi compagni (1953). In these works, Cassola constructs a narrative opposition between the bourgeois intellectual (Fausto) and the communist worker (Baba). Within a narrative space that reconfigures relational dynamics by centering the communist character, the author portrays the failure of intellectual leadership. The essay further explores how this opposition shapes narrative construction – affecting plot structure, character develo

Carlo Cassola was born in Rome in 1907, and lived in Toscana. This region inspired him and not only he lived there, but also Toscana became the stage of his novels. Ordinary people and their daily problems are the aim, although sociopolitical problems are usually the frame of his literary works.

Assumed to be a traditional writer supporting a narrative affected by "crepuscular anguish",Cassola has been firmly put out or, at best, on the fringes of the twentieth-century canon: this is overtly witnessed by school manuals of literary history. In fact, contemporary and, by habits, present-day criticism intended to see Cassola as the proponent of a sort of literary elegiac idyll, full of good feelings, content of the consolations of a quiet life. Far from it, his work is permeated by a profound unease, a sharp perception of the difficulty of living, even and particularly at the level of th

Recent archaeological excavations of the cave of Cyclops, located in the southern cliffs of the islet of Youra (northern Sporades, Greece) have provided evidence of continuous human activity from the Mesolithic Period (10000–6800 BC) up to the beginning of the Final Neolithic (4600/ 4500–3300/3200 BC). The results of the investigation of its Mesolithic stratigraphy lead to the assumption that the economy of the prehistoric local human community was based predominantly upon the exploitation of marine resources (Sampson 1996a, 1996b, 1998; Powell 2003).
