Abstract:
This paper deals with metal matrix composites (MMCs) of Al 7075 alloy containing different weight percentage (2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10) basalt short fiber reinforcement and unreinforced matrix alloy. The samples were produced by the permanent stir casting technique. The casting ingots were cut into blanks to be forged in single stage and double stage, using MN press and graphite-based lubricant. The microstructures and fatigue properties of the matrix alloy and MMC samples were investigated in the as cast state and in the single and double stage forging operations. The microstructure results showed that the forged sample had a uniform distribution of the basalt short fiber throughout the specimens. Evaluation of the fatigue properties showed that the forged samples had higher values than those of the as cast counterparts. After forging, the enhancement of the fatigue strength of the matrix alloy was so significant and high in the case of 2.5 and 5.0 wt. percentage basalt short fiber reinforced MMC, and there was no enhancement in 7.5 and 10 weight percentages short fiber reinforced MMCs. The fracture damage was mainly due to decohesion at the matrix-fiber interface.

Abstract:
This paper presents the mechanical properties and the microstructure of the high performance fiber reinforced concrete (HPFRC) containing up to 3% volume fraction of chopped Basalt fibers. Three types of the concrete were prepared, out of which, the first type was prepared by utilizing 100% cement content. The other two types of the concrete were prepared by replacing 10% cement content with silica fume and the locally produced metakaolin. Using each concrete type, four mixes were prepared in which Basalt fibers were added in the range of 0–3%; that is, total twelve mixes of the HPFRC concrete were prepared. From each of the twelve concrete mixes, total twelve specimens were cast to determine the mechanical properties of the HPFRC including compressive strength (cube and cylinder), splitting tensile strength, and the flexural strength. In this way, a total of 108 specimens were cast and tested in this study. Test results showed that the addition of the Basalt fibers significantly increased the tensile splitting strength and the flexural strength of the HPFRC, while there was slight improvement in the compressive strength with the addition of Basalt fibers. The microstructure of HPFRC was examined to determine the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between the aggregates and the paste by using field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), which showed the improvement of the ITZ due to the addition of the Basalt fibers.

Abstract:
This paper deals with the experiment investigations on the Basalt Fibre Reinforced Polymer composites wrapped concrete specimens for determining the mathematical prediction for retrofitting of concrete specimens. For the past three decades, fibres are being effectively utilized in engineering fields. Some countries do not have specified codes for structural designing of Fibre Reinforced Polymer composites. Especially for this situation, the mathematical predictions were determined by experimentally for Basalt Fibre Reinforced Polymer composites retrofitted concrete. For this experiment, cubes, cylinders and prisms were cast using M30 grade concrete to analyze the characteristic strengths. The tests were carried out with and without Basalt Fibre Reinforced Polymer wrapping and retrofitted after 0%, 30%, 60% and 90% fatigue loaded or preloaded specimens. The retrofitted specimens with Basalt Fibre Reinforced Polymer wrapping, even after 90% fatigue loaded possess higher strength than conventional one. The observed readings were analyzed and mathematical prediction was developed by using readings and graphical representations. From the study, similar results were observed through experiments and mathematical predictions.

Abstract:
Diploma thesis deals with the determination of fracture toughness values of sintered silicon carbide and casted basalt using both the Single Edge V-Notch Beam (SEVNB) and the Chevron Notched Beam (CNB) methods at room and cryogenic temperatures. The first part of this thesis offers general overview and categorization of ceramic materials. Fracture mechanics of the ceramic materials and available fracture toughness testing methods are discussed in following chapters. The last section in the theoretical part is aimed to the microstructure and properties of the silicon carbide. Experimental part of the work summarizes methods used for characterization of selected materials from the microstructural and fracture point of view. Preparation of samples for microstructural observation and samples for fracture toughness determination are described in details. The results of the fracture toughness data for sintered silicon carbide and cast-basalt obtained at room temperature and at -100 °C are displayed. Consideration of possible measurements errors and application of various fracture toughness testing methods are discussed in the next chapter of this work. The difference in the fracture toughness values with the decrease of testing temperature was found. The difference depends on both, the used method of fracture toughness determination and the material used for the tests. The most important results gained during the experimental work are summarized in the chapter “Conclusions”.

Abstract:
Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) methodology's approach to problem-solving that "similar problems have similar solutions" has proved quite favorable for many industrial artificial intelligence applications. However, CBR's very advantages hinder its performance as case bases (CBs) grow larger than moderate sizes. Searching similar cases is expensive. This handicap often makes CBR less appealing for today's ubiquitous data environments while, actually, there is ever more reason to benefit from this effective methodology. Accordingly, CBR community's traditional approach of controlling CB growth to maintain performance is shifting towards finding new ways to deal with abundant data. As a contribution to these efforts, this thesis aims to speed up CBR by leveraging both problem and solution spaces in large-scale CBs that are composed of temporally related cases, as in the example of electronic health records. For the occasions when the speed-up we achieve for exact results may still not be feasible, we endow the CBR system with anytime algorithm capabilities to provide approximate results with confidence upon interruption. Exploiting the temporality of cases allows us to reach superior gains in execution time for CBs of millions of cases. Experiments with publicly available real-world datasets encourage the continued use of CBR in domains where it historically excels like healthcare; and this time, not suffering from, but enjoying big data.

Abstract:
Exposed weathering profiles of a series of Pololu lava flows in Kohala, Hawaii are ideal for investigating the sequence of reactions/reaction pathways of weathered basalt. Weathering reactions for saprolites show mineral sequences that include feldspar → halloysite ± gibbsite + solutes; clinopyroxene → hematite + minor halloysite + solutes; olivine → hematite + solutes; magnetite → hematite or other Fe-oxides/hydroxides. However, the presence of smectite in four samples suggests that smectite-group clays may form as short lived intermediates at the base of the weathering profile. Regionally, on Kohala, soils and saprolites are dominated by halloysite with small quantities of other clays such as kaolinite, gibbsite, and smectite. However, one horizon in the weathering profile at the study site in Kohala is dominated by gibbsite. Smectite is found at the base of the profile above impermeable areas where mass leaching has left increased alkaline and alkaline earth elemental (Mg, Ca, Na, and K) abundances relative to the parent rock. The amount of elemental gain varies from -5% to +75% for samples with smectite. Different climates generate different weathering profile depths. MASW (multi-channel analysis of surface waves) shows that the depth of the weathering profile is 15 meters. Seismic profiles correlate the depth of the weathering profile inland (~15 meters), with cliff face (~13 meters). Other than the gibbsite horizon, most mineral zones are too thin to be resolved through second-order velocity variations. P-wave reflection surveys are unsuitable for imaging the base of the weathering front because the transition to fresh rock may be gradational. However, within the saprolite section, boundaries between relict lava flow textures produce reflections that mimic expected stratigraphic patterns. Perpendicular to the shoreline, reflectors dip gently seaward, whereas parallel to the shoreline, lenticular packages of relict lava flows are observed.

Abstract:
This thesis addresses the study of cash management and short-term financial planning through the movement of money in bank accounts involved in the important financial decisions of a firm. The research is carried within the framework of models for corporate financial planning, whose development has mostly occurred in the last sixty years. Particularly, the work focuses on the Cash Concentration and Disbursements Systems (CCDS), which are used by firms for the purpose of improving the planning and control of current assets and cash management. The aim of a CCDS is to concentrate available cash in a main bank account in order to make best use of money in large amounts to support investment and financing operations. Consequently, the main motivation of the thesis is to achieve an accurate representation of a CCDS, allowing its numerical simulation, analysis and evaluation, as well as the subsequent possibility of exploring new researches and the development of algorithms for the financial decisions support, based on tools of control theory. In this regard, a simulation model of a CCDS seen as an inventory management system is presented, based on difference equations and systems engineering techniques including the existence of delays due to banking procedures. The model assumes the existence of a centrally operated main account. This account receives money transfers from the revenue accounts of each agency. Also from the main account, money is transferred to the agencies' disbursements accounts in order to cover overdrafts. There exist an investment account into which any cash surpluses of the main account are deposited and a credit line in order to avoid the cash deficits. The operating rules for the CCDS are defined, and income and financial costs involved are considered. The model represents the flow of money between the identified elements of the system and the flow of money requirements or transfer orders. An equivalent model represented by algebraic equations through the Z-transform is derived, which allows using rigorous control techniques in the field of finance. Based on a decentralized approach on the model of the CCDS, a Model Predictive Control (MPC) for a revenue account is developed, which is applied to all agencies. Dynamic Programming (DP) is used for the prediction model by including a standard forecasting model for uncertainty. Simplifications of the MPC are included seeking alleviate some of the known problems when DP is applied under uncertainty. Moreover, a band for the uncertainty is established to narrow the input of the DP model, together with a stabilizing regulator in cascade fashion using a linear feedback gain (closed-loop). This combination allows determining a range for the system stability regardless of the size of the prediction horizon. The reference signal used is a sawtooth function, which conveniently adapts to the inventory policy applied. Theoretically, and through simulation, it is shown that the proposed controller meets the control objective. The MPC of the revenue account is adapted by adding delay time in order to be used for disbursement accounts. Accordingly, two proposals of a model predictive control are provided on the overdraft coverage problem. Finally, a case study is presented using hypothetical data in order to test the simulation model of the CCDS. Running the model allows performing a comprehensive analysis of results showing its potentialities and the versatility to suit different realistic scenarios. This research opens up a range of possibilities for further research in which techniques and theories of systems engineering and control are combined, applied to corporate financial field.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to present a methodological approach for the automatic monitoring of batch processes based on a combination of statistical models and machine learning methods. The former is used to model the process based on the relationships among the different monitored variables throughout time, while the latter is used to improve the diagnosis capabilities of the system. Statistical methods do not relate faulty observations with its root cause (they only list the subset of variables whose behaviour has been altered) and they lack of learning capabilities. By using case-based reasoning (CBR) for the diagnosis, faulty observations can be associated with more significant information (like causes). Statistical models also provide a new representation of the observations, on an orthogonal basis, that improves the use of the distance-based approaches of the CBR, giving a better performance

Abstract:
The research presented in this dissertation focuses on expressivity-aware tempo transformations of monophonic audio recordings of saxophone jazz performances. It is a contribution to content-based audio processing, a field of technology that has recently emerged as an answer to the increased need to deal intelligently with the evergrowing amount of digital multimedia information available nowadays. We have investigated the problem of how a musical performance played at a particular tempo can be rendered automatically at another tempo, while preserving naturally sounding expressivity. This problem cannot be reduced to just applying a uniform transformation to all notes of the melody, since it often degrades the musical quality of the performance. We present a case-based reasoning system for expressivity aware tempo transformations. A validation of the system showed superior results compared to uniform transformation. Furthermore, contributions have been made to expressive performance analysis, CBR, melody retrieval, and evaluation methodologies of expressive models.

Abstract:
The first half of the thesis deals with the seed morphology of members of the ANITA grade at the base of the angiosperm phylogeny (Amborella, Nymphaeales, Illiciales, Trimeniaceae, and Austrobaileyaceae), especially Illiciaceae and Schisandraceae. Seed characters support a major division between the New World and Old World species of Illicium. Fossil seeds previously assigned to Illiciaceae were re-evaluated. In Schisandraceae, seed and leaf epidermal characters were added to a previously published morphological data matrix. Phylogenetic analysis using the extended data matrix shows that Kadsura and Schisandra appear to be supported as monophyletic sister taxa by a number of synapomorphies in reproductive and vegetative characters. Fossil seeds from the Eocene of North America show some similarities to the modern Schisandra glabra from North America, whereas fossils from Europe are more similar to modern Asian species. In the second half of the thesis, seed morphology of Lysimachia and closely related taxa (Anagallis, Ardisiandra, Asterolinon, Glaux, Pelletiera, Trientalis) was investigated. The phylogenetic relationships among the endemic Hawaiian species of Lysimachia was also studied, using nuclear ribosomal DNA (ETS, ITS) and chloroplast DNA (rpl16, rpl20-rps12, rps16, trnH-psbA, trnS-G) sequence data. The seeds in Lysimachia and related taxa vary in, e.g., shape, seed coat structure and surface patterns. Seed surface patterns are mostly congruent with molecular phylogenetic relationships. A reticulate surface pattern is diagnostic for, e.g., the subgenus Palladia and the Hawaiian endemic subgenus Lysimachiopsis. Mapping seed characters onto a recent molecular-based phylogenetic tree, reveals that they provide potentially synapomorphic character states for various subclades of Lysimachia. The phylogenetic analysis based on the combined data set using nuclear ribosomal DNA and chloroplast DNA data provides new insights into the relationships within the Hawaiian subgenus Lysimachiopsis. Here our results indicate that earlier taxonomic treatments of the group need to be partially revised.

Abstract:
The Deccan Volcanic Province of India is considered as one of the largest basalts-covered regions in the world, formed due to extensive outpouring of basaltic lavas during Deccan volcanism (∼65 Ma). The sedimentary sequence below the flood basalt is mainly characterized by Mesozoic strata with a varying thickness of 1000 m to 2500 m. It is considered that requisite heat generation due to Deccan Trap volcanism soon after the Cretaceous sedimentation may have acted as a catalyst in hydrocarbon potential in this area (Vardhan et al. 2008). However, it is essentially unexplored because of the limitations of conventional marine streamer P-wave seismic acquisition in imaging the structures both intra-basalt and sub-basalt. The major challenges can be considered as follows: Strong reflections due to high impedance contrasts at the top (and bottom) of the basalts leading to significant loss of transmitted seismic energy; Scattering of energy due to large acoustic impedance contrast at top and bottom of the basalt; Generation of multiples, both surface-related and interbed, from the top and bottom of the basalt, and intra-basalt boundaries, masking genuine primary reflections at the pre-basasediments; Significant attenuation of seismic energy in the basaltic sequences due to its complex internal structure generally causing weak sub-basasignal; Low signal-to-noise ratio creating ambiguity in estimating accurate velocity model of subsurface. This case study demonstrates that, even with legacy marine streamer surveys, an appropriate workflow of combining suitable advanced technologies can help to overcome the long-standing challenges of sub-basalt imaging. The reprocessed data show clear uplift in the sub-basalt imaging and the inversion results validate the quality of the new data in relation to the well logs.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Freiría, Heber, Alejandro Nin Pratt, and Gonzalo Muñoz. Inter-American Development Bank, March 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0003150.

Full text
