Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This dissertation explores references to islands in 13th and 14th century Iberian literature in a corpus of encyclopedias, travel books and chivalry novels from 1223 through 1396. I explore how island geography became part of the Medieval imago mundi. Many Medieval readers were interested in these faraway lands where, they believed, monstrous races flourished, sea monsters lurked, and Paradise awaited to be rediscovered. The physical and human geography featured in these narratives, gave birth to an imaginary, utopian, exotic, extravagant, and mysterious concept of “islandness” located in idyllic places to be interpreted as cognitive maps of the social, politic and economic conventions of the era. The purpose of this dissertation is to contribute with a new approach to Medieval Island Studies by means of a rhetorical analysis in geography through tropes (metaphor, synecdoche, metonym and irony) and fiction modes (romance, tragedy and comedy). This proposal assumes that the author-narrator is a self-aware geographer willing to satiate the desires and prejudices of its audience by constructing an attractive narrative that may stimulate a longing for this unattainable island world.

Abstract:
This dissertation is an inquiry into the nature of medieval conceptions of sleeping and dreaming and how are they reflected in the spanish literary texts between XIIIth and XVIth centuries. It concludes with three convictions: first, that the pagan culture concerning dream visions was not absolutly eradicated from daily popular customs, despite of ecclesiastical censures againts superstitions; secondly, that ascetic christian doctrine is relevant to understand medieval conceptions of sleeping and, consequently, of dreaming; and, finaly, that oneiric literary exploitation increase when medical and psichological theories of dream experiences prevail over theology.
This study deals mainly with medieval hagiography (Vida de Santa María Magdalena), epic poetry (Poema de Fernán González), chivalric romance (Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo's Las Sergas de Esplandián, Páez de Ribera's Florisando, the anonymous Palmerín de Olivia) and two modern texts: La Lozana andaluza by Francisco Delicado, and Luis Barahona de Soto's Las lágrimas de Angélica..

Abstract:
The doctoral research entitled Pubblici poteri e signorie di castello nella Romagna nordoccidentale fra XI e XIII secolo is a critical study about castle-lordships and their rise and growth from institutional, political and social point of view. This work examines local and feudal powers, castle-lordships and fortified settlements in Romagna between XI and XIII centuries, connecting with the historiographical debate about castle-holding aristocracy. It has specifically been taken into consideration north-western of Romagna, which was later conquered by Este family. This is a particular kind of area, without important towns but fully of castles and dominated by Ravenna, Faenza, Imola and, most of all, by Ravennate archbishop. This area has also long time influenced by byzantine rule. Thanks to his work, we can clearly understand that north-western Romagna is a lot more like to the remaining part of northern Italy of Longobard-French tradition.

Abstract:
The objective of this study was to investigate the Christian Catholic female role models of Eve and Mary’s incorporation in the Iberic legislation, Visigothic and Alfonsine’s, through the analyses of the Leges Visigothorum, the Fuero Real, and the Siete Partidas. In order to accomplish this task, the research has been divided into four chapters. The first chapter focuses on the Visigothic historical process of creating a Code of Law following the framework developed by the Romans, as well as the importance of Religion for the Visigothic society and the strong existing relationship between religion and legislation. The second chapter focuses on Alfonso X, king of Castilla and Leon during the second half of the 13th century, and the legislation that was draw up during his reign. The third chapter focuses on the study of the biblical female role models of Eve and Mary, which were encouraged and disseminated by the Catholic Church as a parameter to classify woman’s behavior. Finally, the fourth chapter gives a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the sources used in order to verify the previously mentioned female role models.

Abstract:
Memory and knowledge. The castle of Belmonte in CalabriaA small A small village located in Italy on the Calabrian Tyrrhenian coast, Belmonte Calabro has its historic center with a typical medieval urban structure that has remained almost unchanged over the centuries and is characterized by the presence of the ruins of a castle and its surrounding environments whose. The planimetry succeeds to be identified because it is bordered by a wall, only partially preserved, pronounced by towers and marked by a road that, in its main points still existing, follows its development. The castle, built on the hill’s top of a tuff nature, in an elevated position respect to the urban core, had a plan with a roughly quadrangular shape with four imposing square towers. Of particular note is its curtain wall that originally had four doors, which opened in correspondence at the four cardinal points. In addition to having suffered several collapses in many parts of its structure due to the various earthquakes that occurred over time, as well as various looting and the siege by the French artillery dating back to the early 1800s, the castle is currently subjected to degrading actions due to the attack of biological type, which manifests itself with a widespread presence of patinas, as well as those due to a thick weed vegetation that affects many of the surfaces of its structure. The study aims to provide a useful contribution to reconstructing the profile of the original structure of the ancient castle. To obtain, therefore, more information about it, a specific survey plan was developed to characterize its constituent materials and also its state of preservation. To this end, in correspondence of structural parts still intact, samples were collected that were analyzed and characterized in the laboratory by Raman Spectroscopy.

The castle Colonna of Arnara: from the restoration of the monument to the enhancement of the ancient village and its territoryThe castle of Arnara, is located in Ciociaria in southern Lazio, in what was once the feud of the Conti of Ceccano. For the territory it is the most important monumental complex of medieval architecture. In fact, despite its small size, it is one of the few examples of fortified architecture still original in its essential lines. This castle represents an exceptional case of sedimentation and stratification, which even today, from its reading, allows us to reconstruct both its historical events and those related to the urban development of the adjacent historic village. Moreover it can be considered of priority importance also from the urbanistic point of view because it represents the first historical nucleus of Arnara. Unfortunately, today, the castle is in a bad state of conservation. With the passing of time its conditions have become more and more aggravated also because of the complex events linked to the various passages of property, of private and public nature, which have strongly influenced the management of the monument. The study of the castle of Arnara is part of the national and international debate that considers participation a key factor for the sustainable enhancement of the cultural heritage, because it promotes greater awareness of its social and economic value. The objective of the research work is to develop, taking the castle as a case study, a new approach that sees cultural heritage (tangible and intangible) as an irreplaceable heritage of knowledge and as a precious resource for economic growth, employment and social cohesion; therefore a cultural heritage seen as a driving force. In the specific case of Colonna Castle, attention has been focused on the importance of being able to activate virtuous circles around this very important place of culture, enhancing its role as a centre of knowledge and incubator of creativity and social innovation.
