This dissertation is an inquiry into the nature of medieval conceptions of sleeping and dreaming and how are they reflected in the spanish literary texts between XIIIth and XVIth centuries. It concludes with three convictions: first, that the pagan culture concerning dream visions was not absolutly eradicated from daily popular customs, despite of ecclesiastical censures againts superstitions; secondly, that ascetic christian doctrine is relevant to understand medieval conceptions of sleeping and, consequently, of dreaming; and, finaly, that oneiric literary exploitation increase when medical and psichological theories of dream experiences prevail over theology.
This study deals mainly with medieval hagiography (Vida de Santa María Magdalena), epic poetry (Poema de Fernán González), chivalric romance (Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo's Las Sergas de Esplandián, Páez de Ribera's Florisando, the anonymous Palmerín de Olivia) and two modern texts: La Lozana andaluza by Francisco Delicado, and Luis Barahona de Soto's Las lágrimas de Angélica..

Full textThe doctoral research entitled Pubblici poteri e signorie di castello nella Romagna nordoccidentale fra XI e XIII secolo is a critical study about castle-lordships and their rise and growth from institutional, political and social point of view. This work examines local and feudal powers, castle-lordships and fortified settlements in Romagna between XI and XIII centuries, connecting with the historiographical debate about castle-holding aristocracy. It has specifically been taken into consideration north-western of Romagna, which was later conquered by Este family. This is a particular kind of area, without important towns but fully of castles and dominated by Ravenna, Faenza, Imola and, most of all, by Ravennate archbishop. This area has also long time influenced by byzantine rule. Thanks to his work, we can clearly understand that north-western Romagna is a lot more like to the remaining part of northern Italy of Longobard-French tradition.

Full textThe objective of this study was to investigate the Christian Catholic female role models of Eve and Mary’s incorporation in the Iberic legislation, Visigothic and Alfonsine’s, through the analyses of the Leges Visigothorum, the Fuero Real, and the Siete Partidas. In order to accomplish this task, the research has been divided into four chapters. The first chapter focuses on the Visigothic historical process of creating a Code of Law following the framework developed by the Romans, as well as the importance of Religion for the Visigothic society and the strong existing relationship between religion and legislation. The second chapter focuses on Alfonso X, king of Castilla and Leon during the second half of the 13th century, and the legislation that was draw up during his reign. The third chapter focuses on the study of the biblical female role models of Eve and Mary, which were encouraged and disseminated by the Catholic Church as a parameter to classify woman’s behavior. Finally, the fourth chapter gives a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the sources used in order to verify the previously mentioned female role models.
