Abstract:
Brazil is the world eighth largest tomato producer and, within the country, the tomato production chain is segmented according to fruit destination: fresh consumption and processing (industrial supply). In contrast, Mozambique does not have a differentiated chain and cultivars are expected to serve both purposes. As there are no tomato breeding programs in Mozambique, cultivars used in the country come from other regions of the world, including Brazil. This paper describes the development and assessment of tomato hybrids with dual-purpose: fresh use and processing. Five tomato genotypes (B13LD, Castone, Massag-72, "Viradoro", and "Rio Grande") were crossed in complete diallel design without reciprocal, and the general and specific combining ability (GCA and SCA) and heterosis were estimated to ten agronomic and fruit quality traits. The offspring of cross B13LD x "Rio Grande" showed potential for use in dual purpose, considering SCA and heterosis estimates for fruit firmness (FF), total content of soluble solids (TSS), number of fruits per plant (NFP) and yield (YLD). Combinations B13LD x Castone, Massag-72 x "Viradoro", and Massag-72 x "Rio Grande", although having no strength to increase YLD, had positive heterosis for FF, TSS, and NFP. The development of high-yielding genotypes, with agronomic traits that meet the expectations of both markets are a breakthrough for Mozambican tomato producers and may also be very convenient to family farmers in Brazil. In both countries, these dual-purpose cultivars represent the freedom of choice to farmers, who will be then in position to allocate their production to the most profitable market segment.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Dual-purpose tomato breeding, for table and industry, has great importance for tomato production and strong impact on Brazilian socioeconomic development. In the present study, we used the methodology of mixed models to estimate the combinatorial ability of five tomato lines evaluated in complete diallel scheme without reciprocal, and cluster analysis to prospect new double and triple hybrids constitutions. Thus, we observed that positive values of general combining ability occur in ‘B13LD’, ‘Viradoro’ and ‘Rio Grande’ (for fruit firmness), ‘B13LD’, ‘Castone’ and ‘Massag-72’ (for soluble solids content); and ‘Viradoro’ and ‘Rio Grande’ (for productivity). The crosses ‘B13LD x Rio Grande’ and ‘Massag-72 x Viradoro’ showed positive estimates of specific combination ability for soluble solids content, fruit firmness and productivity. The hybrid ‘B13LD x Rio Grande’ showed itself promising to be among those with the highest estimates of the genetic value of the cross for the three aforementioned traits. For the analysis of genetic divergence and estimate of combining ability it was possible to indicate two double and three triple hybrids.

Abstract:
The mistletoe Psittacanthus macrantherus Eichl. (Loranthaceae) is an important parasite of pines (Pinus spp., Pinaceae) in Mexico (1). It has been reported to parasitize Pinus engelmannii Carr., P. herrerai Mart., P. lawsonii Roezl ex Gord. & Glend., P. lumholtzii Robins & Fern., P. oocarpa Schiede, and P. pseudostrobus Lindl. (1). During July 2005, we found this mistletoe parasitizing P. devoniana Lindl. and Quercus castanea Nee near Route 40 in Sinaloa, Mexico approximately 12 km west of El Palmito (23°30′N, 105°07′W, elevation 1,900 m). The mistletoe was common in P. devoniana, and some trees were severely infected (>10 plants per tree). However, no mortality associated with mistletoe infection in P. devoniana was observed. Only one infected tree of Q. castanea was observed in this area and it was not severely infected. We also observed this mistletoe on P. douglasiana Mart. along Route 40 west and east of El Palmito, but no specimens were collected because plants were very high in the crowns of the infected trees. To our knowledge, this is the first report of this mistletoe parasitizing P. devoniana, P. douglasiana, and Q. castanea (1). Specimens of Psittacanthus macrantherus from P. devoniana and Q. castenea have been deposited at the Deaver Herbarium (ASC), Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff (Accession Nos. 79534 and 79535). Prince, Leland Fred. "Leland F. Prince's Earth Divers." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2010. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2085.

Full text
Abstract:
My stoneware sculptures in my MFA final project were named Earth Divers because clay as a material is earth and clay is also symbolic of the Earth. The way that I physically dive into clay up to my elbows is a poetic performance. The sculptures were built in sections horizontally and then stacked vertically. I began the process by first making life size plaster molds of the human figure taken from live people. Earth Divers take their architectural structure specifically from the organic curves of the negative voids that are characteristic of the plaster figure molds. I built into these plaster molds a block or brick like section. I then removed the large block sections from the molds and stacked the sections one on top of the other combining the figurative and architectural structures with gothic influence. The sculptor, Stephen De Staebler, who works in a similar fashion, describes his work as, "... first laying the figure down and later standing it in a vertical position." The way of life that was lost with the manufacturing past of my family at Castone Brick is found in the use of industrial nostalgia by modeling I-beam shapes as part of the structure of the stacked sections. I also fired nuts, bolts, and washers of various sizes in the clay that build the surface of the human forms. The square nut seen in my work is no longer being manufactured and is symbolic of the passing of the industrial age in America. Finally, to build the surfaces of my sculptures I used slips, glazes, and a variety of clays on top of clay, and laid glass fragments on the horizontal surfaces to create a look of pooled water when my work was fired similar to what I have seen in the Lehman Caves in Baker, Nevada. "I believe there is a force in this world that lives beneath the surface, something primitive and wild that awakens when you need an extra push just to survive, like wild flowers that bloom after a fire turns the forest black. Most people are afraid of it and keep it buried deep inside themselves. But, there will always be a few people who have the courage to love what is untamed inside us." (Tim McGraw)

Abstract:
Abstract A new concept for omni-directional platform and vehicle design using active split offset castors is presented. An active split offset castor (ASOC) unit consists of two coaxial conventional wheels driven independently and connected to the platform chassis by a link. The kinematics and characteristics of the ASOC are analyzed and compared with conventional active castors and steered wheels. The concept of building omni-directional platforms and vehicles using the ASOC is presented and their design and control are discussed. Experimental results from a prototype omni-directional platform are presented, which demonstrate the feasibility of the concept.

Abstract:
The water supply system of the most iconic fortress of the Order of Calatrava at the Command of Martos (Jaén, Spain): The Castle of the RockThis article deals with the analysis of the conserved remains of the water storage system of the Castle the Rock or the High Fortress of Martos (La Peña or Fortaleza Alta de Martos), which constituted the castle and main headquarters of the Master of the Order of Calatrava at the Commander of Martos between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. The elements that compose it make a unique hydraulic complex that still allows to be recognized and documented. Due to its importance and meaning, this castle is one that better shows the constructive techniques and the polyorcetic typologies developed and updated by this Order in its Commands in Castile-La Manche and Andalusia. The hydraulic system to supply water to this rocky fortress is a reflect of these technology, and it is unique in its design and layout.
