The need to find biodegradable alternatives for common polymer materials has risen due to the increase in pollution (soil and water) and the effects that it has on the ocean and wildlife. Alternatives can be found by turning to plant-based oils, for example castor oil, to be used in the synthesis of a variety of monomers. Castor oil is suitable as it is non-edible; thus its use does not deplete food sources and it has high chemical reactivity. The importance of spatial variation in abundance for the assessment of climate change impacts was examined using the North American beaver ( Castor canadensis) in Quebec as a model species. A preliminary characterization of the beavers' range edge improved the core-sampling bias and revealed that beavers are present at low densities, in shrubby riparian habitats as far north as the communities of Tasiujaq and Umiujaq. Experiments were conducted to test for ricin content in tissue samples from four castor cultivars, developing castor seed, germinating castor seedlings, and chemically and heat treated seed meal. Ricin content of each sample was examined via Western blotting with ricin A-chain specific antibodies. Results indicate that ricin is present solely within castor endosperm and is not present any other tissues. Its current source is the castor plant (Ricinus communis ) which contains up to 90% ricinoleic acid in its seed storage lipid. Influence of nitrogen (N) deficiency on castor cv. Hale growth, physiology, and leaf reflectance properties were investigated. Treatments imposed were complete Hoaglands nutrient solution (control, 100N), reduced N to 20% of the control (20N) and withheld N from the solution (0N) from 34 to 66 days after sowing (DAS) in 12-L pots grown out doors.
