Abstract:
Cat-scratch fever is a bacterial zoonotic disease most commonly caused by the bacteria Bartonella henselae. In the majority of cases, the pathogens enter the body as a consequence of a scratch by young cats. The disease usually presents as local lymphadenopathy and resolves spontaneously over a period of 8–12 weeks. The epidemiological status of bartonellosis in Poland varies. According to the latest epidemiological data, a total of 36 cases of the disease were reported in 2008, with 75% of cases requiring hospitalisation. The clinical presentation of cat-scratch fever is often non-specific, so a wide panel of tests is required to rule out other diseases that may be accompanied by local lymphadenopathy. The disease is usually mild and selflimiting, but some patients may require antibiotic therapy. The case reported here shows that a thorough evaluation of medical history plays a key role in the diagnostic process, providing a rapid and accurate preliminary diagnosis.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTIn full passive sentences such as The cat was kicked by the dog, the patient (cat) is promoted to subject and the agent is demoted to the by-phrase. Children 2;10 to 4;7 years (mean 3;6) who were taught the form with animate patients and animate agents (The baby is being picked up by the girl) were better able to produce and comprehend passives than children taught with inanimate patients and animate agents (The flower is being picked up by the girl). The finding of comparable post-teaching performance in children taught with perceptually salient (coloured) VS. nonsalient patients argues against a salience explanation for the patient animacy effect. Moreover, equal access to word forms for animate and inanimate nouns did not reduce the effect. The animacy effect is consistent with claims that ‘perspective’ is the cognitive counterpart to the formal category of subject; and, conversely, inconsistent with attempts to understand language acquisition in terms of a language system that operates in isolation from other facets of human cognition.

Abstract:
The intention of this thesis is to identify and analyze the cat woman archetype as a contemporary extension of the transgressive witch archetype, which rampantly appears over the course of cinema history, working as a signifier of a patriarchal society's fear of autonomous and subversive women. The character of Catwoman is the ultimate representation for this archetype on grounds of her visibility, longevity, and ability to return again and again. More importantly, Catwoman and her sisterhood of cat women work against male creators as a means of female empowerment through trickery. Within this thesis, key films of varying genres are drawn from throughout cinema history and analyzed in order to demonstrate the intertextual network of characters that make up the cat woman archetype, and the importance of the Catwoman character in her many forms.

Abstract:
For decades, situational comedies — commonly named “sitcoms” — have been racially segregated on TV between Black-cast sitcoms and White-cast sitcoms. Extensive research has been led about representation of Black and White masculinities in this segregated context. This master thesis studies what happens when White and Black males are equally casted as main characters in contemporary sitcoms by offering a case-study of the 2011 sitcom New Girl (2011-2017). How is Black masculinity represented in New Girl, and in which ways does it intersect with contemporary societal issues (e.g. racial profiling, Black Lives Matter movement)? This case-study uses tools, methodologies and concepts, drawn from Black and Intersectional feminism as well as Feminist media studies. Based on a 25 episodes sample of the show, it implements Ronald Jackson’s traditional stereotypes classification and “Black masculine identity theory” (Jackson, 2006) to study representations of Black masculinity in New Girl, through its two main Black male characters, Winston and Coach. Given that representations of minorities in popular culture reflect and influence our contemporary society, the results offer new insights about how sitcoms, series and popculture productions in general can challenge traditional stereotypes and display a more progressive Black masculinity.

Abstract:
This study’s intent is to show a positive association between women’s health and women’s education due to the recent introduction of the Let Girls Learn initiative. Health and education indicators in five countries that have implemented Let Girls Learn programs were compared to five countries that have not. The ten countries were otherwise similar in terms of economy, health, and education at baseline. Data was collected for life expectancy, infant Mortality Rate, maternal mortality rate, rate of Cesarean-section, and the ratio of female to male children with less than two years of schooling over a time period of approximately fifteen years for each country. An unpaired t-test was then performed on each indicator for both categories of countries to compare their mean changes over time. A significantly greater improvement in the countries that have implemented Let Girls Learn initiatives was found for infant mortality rate. More research on additional women’s health and women’s education indicators over a longer period of time is needed in order to conclude that the Let Girls Learn initiative is positively associated with improved women’s health outcomes.

This study aims to investigate possible correlations between the morphology of microglia in the hippocampus and dentate gyrus and cognitive performances in individual tests of learning and spatial memory in Cebus apella. Due to the good performance of Cebus apella in hippocampal-dependent cognitive tasks, we used selected tests of Cantab battery successfully used in Old World non-human primates and man. To adapt individuals to the touch screen and to assess spatial learning and memory, Motor Screening Test (MOT) and Paired Associated Learning Test (PAL) were used respectively. To detect possible correlations between microglial morphology and individual performances in the spatal learning and memory tasks, it was necessary to reconstruct and analyze microglial morphological details from the middle and outer one-thirds of the dentate gyrus molecular layer and from the lacunosum molecular layer of CA1, employing three dimensional microscopy. The definition of the boundaries and layers of CA1 and dentate gyrus employed architectural criteria previously defined. For selective microglia immunostaining, it was used polyclonal antibody against the adapter binding ionized calcium Iba -1 protein (anti- Iba1). The occurrence of clusters after multivariate statistical analysis based on microglial morphometric parameters allowed the distinction of at least two major morphological groups of microglia in all individuals. The spatial learning rate and some of the morphometric parameters of microglia from dentate gyrus revealed significant linear and non-linear correlations. In contrast, CA1 did not show any correlation between microglial morphology and behavior. Based on the present and previous studies we suggest that the correlation between cognitive performances and complexity of morphological glial features is not an exclusive attribute of astrocytes and that microglial morphology of the molecular layer of dentate gyrus may be indirectly associated to the performance of individual tests of spatial memory.

Abstract:
History
Ph.D.
This dissertation challenges the dominant interpretation in women's history of the 1920s and 1930s as the "doldrums of the women's movement," and demonstrates that Philadelphia's political history is incomplete without the inclusion of African American women's voices. Given their well-developed bases of power in social reform, club, church, and interracial groups and strong tradition of political activism, these women exerted tangible pressure on Philadelphia's political leaders to reshape the reform agenda. When success was not forthcoming through traditional political means, African American women developed alternate strategies to secure their political agenda. While this dissertation is a traditional social and political history, it will also combine elements of biography in order to reconstruct the lives of Philadelphia's African American political women. This work does not describe a united sisterhood among women or portray this period as one of unparalleled success. Rather, this dissertation will bring a new balance to political history that highlights the importance of local political activism and is at the same time sensitive to issues of race, gender, and class. Central to this study will be the development of biographical sketches for the key African American women activists in Philadelphia, reconstructing the challenges they faced in the political arena, as feminists and as reformers. Enfranchisement did not immediately translate into political power, as black women's efforts to achieve their goals were often frustrated by racial tension with white women and gender divisions within the African American community. This dissertation also contributes to the historical debate regarding the shifting partisan alliance of the African American community. African Americans not intimately tied to the club movement or machine politics spearheaded the move away from the Republicans. They did so not out of economic reasons or as a result of Democratic overtures but because of the poor record of the Republicans on racial issues. Crystal Bird Fauset's rise to political power, as the first African American woman elected to a state legislature in the United States, provides important insight into Philadelphia Democratic politics, the African American community, and the extensive organizational and political networks woven by African American women.
Temple University--Theses

Qi, Qing. "How Can We Understand Children’s Literature through Children’s Psychology? : An Analysis of Pippi Longstocking and The Little Girl at the Window according to Jean Piaget’s pedagogy." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Avdelningen för språk och kultur, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-104833.

Full text
Abstract:
Nowadays, an increasing amount of psychologists and educators find that literature designed for children plays a very important role in a child’s upbringing. A good children’s book not only influences a child’s psychological development, but is also a useful tool for scholars to research children’s psychology, which reflects children’s thinking regarding certain aspects. Astrid Lindgren’s Pippi Longstocking (1957) and Tetsuke Kuroyanagi’s The Little Girl at the Window (1984) undoubtedly are two representative children’s literatures, which were written during a time where the child's perspective in children's literature was not yet an attitude commonly adopted by narrators in novels. The novels illustrate and highlight children's thinking and reasoning abilities, and the characterization appears to draw on children's developmental cognitive theories, describing a child whose cognition ability recalls Jean Piaget's work and ideas. This thesis attempts to analyze Pippi’s and Totto’s thinking and reasoning and how it can illustrate some of Piaget’s theories about children’s drawing and children’s cognitive development. And a further discussion will be going on in this thesis about how Piaget's work might inform and enrich educational practices in accordance with children’s specific needs at different ages and from different cultural backgrounds.

Abdallah, Sara. "Role of Intracellular Ca2+ and pH in CO2/pH Chemosensitivity in Neuroepithelial Cells of the Zebrafish (Danio rerio) Gill Filament." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/23775.

Full text
Abstract:
Neuroepithelial cells (NECs) of the zebrafish gill filament have been previously identified as bimodal O2 and CO2/H+ sensors that depolarize in response to chemostimuli via inhibition of background K+ channels. To further elucidate the signaling pathway underlying CO2/H+ chemoreception in the NECs we employed microspectrofluorometric techniques to examine the effects of hypercapnia on [Ca2+]i and pHi. NECs increased their [Ca2+]i in response to acidic hypercapnia (5% CO2, pH 6.6) and isocapnic acidosis (normocapnia, pH 6.6), but not to isohydric hypercapnia (5% CO2, pH 7.8). The acid- induced increase in [Ca2+]i persisted in the absence of extracellular Ca2+, and Ca2+ channel blockers (Cd2+, Ni2+ and nifedipine). NECs exhibited a rapid and reversible drop in pHi in response to acidic hypercapnia and isohydric hypercapnia. Isocapnic acidosis also induced intracellular acidification within NECs, but it was less severe than the drop in pHi elicited by acidic hypercapnia and isohydric hypercapnia. The rate and magnitude of intracellular acidification was reduced by the CA-inhibitor, acetazolamide, without effect on the acid-induced increase in [Ca2+]i. Acetate was used to investigate the relationship between pHi and [Ca2+]i. Acetate induced intracellular acidification without augmentation of [Ca2+]i. The results of this thesis demonstrate that (1) extracellular acidification, but not CO2, is critical to the hypercapnia-induced increase in [Ca2+]i (2) the increase in [Ca2+]i is independent of the drop in pHi (3) the increase in [Ca2+]i is not mediated by the influx of Ca2+ across the plasma membrane.

Gilleece, Patricia. "How can a school based mindfulness intervention help teenage girls who have experienced school related anxiety within the last year?" Thesis, University of East London, 2015. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/4560/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research aims to explore if the implementation of a mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) intervention with teenage girls increases levels of mindfulness and well-being and decreases anxiety, as measured by the Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS) and The Spence Children’s Anxiety Scale (SCAS), respectively. An exploratory mixed methods design was used, involving sequential data collection. Quantitative data was collected pre and post intervention, qualitative data was collected following the intervention and after the quantitative phase of the study was completed. Combining both qualitative and quantitative data provided a better understanding of intervention impact and generated a rich picture of both process and outcomes. The mindfulness intervention incorporated MBSR techniques and some exercises which were based on Biegel’s (2009) stress reduction workbook for teens. The key findings from this study indicate a significant difference on the students’ levels of mindfulness and well-being as measured by the MAAS and WEMWBS after the intervention took place. There were slight decreases on the SCAS scores however it was not significant. In the semi-structured interviews students highlighted a range of benefits from using mindfulness including: lower levels of stress, improved levels of concentration and attention and higher levels of self-esteem and self-efficacy. These findings are largely consistent with existing literature regarding the use of mindfulness with children and young people.

Abstract:
Worldwide, 132 million girls between 6 and 17 are out of school, more than 21 times the number of girls in school in France. However, every year at school allows a girl to increase her future income by 10% to 20%, which directly contributes to improving her country's growth. That is why, on the occasion of the International Day of the Girl on 11 October, we recall that education is a fundamental right for all children, Article 28 of the 1989 International Convention on the Rights of the Child ratified by 195 countries. A girl's education is recognized as one of the most powerful levers to escape poverty and be emancipated. It is a priority to take action so that millions of girls can go to school. Schooling a girl is about giving her confidence, making her own choices, having a job to build her future. This chapter explores girls' education challenges and solutions in MENA countries.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper is concerned with the optimal layout of gill cells for minimizing the differential deflection of a very large floating structure under a non-uniform load distribution over the surface of the structure. Gill cells are compartments in the floating structure where the bottom surface is perforated to allow water to flow freely in and out. At the locations of these gill cells, the buoyancy forces are eliminated. When placed appropriately, these gill cells are very cost effective in minimizing the differential deflection of the loaded structure. So the optimal layout of the gill cells is a very important design consideration. In this paper, the modeling of a very large floating structure with gill cells is developed and a computational method based on genetic algorithms for seeking the locations of a given number of gill cells is presented. The model and optimization technique are demonstrated on a floating structure which carries a heavy load in its central portion of the structure. Resulting from the non-uniform heavy load on the structure, the differential deflection may cause operational problems for equipments which are sensitive to tilting. Using gill cells that are positioned optimally, it will be shown that the differential deflection can be considerably minimized.

Abstract:
Abstract In this paper, we investigate that Gate-Induced Drain Leakage (GIDL)-weak cells can be screened effectively by modulation of cell-plate voltage (VPlate) during retention time in dynamic random access memory (DRAM) with Negative Wordline bias scheme (NWL). Boosting storage-node voltage (VSP) by increase of VPlate is the root cause of generating additional GIDL fail bits.

Haider, Huma. Financial Incentives to Reduce Female Infanticide, Child Marriage and Promote Girl’s Education: Impact. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2021.004.

Abstract:
This review examines evidence on the key design features and impact of programmes that use Conditional Cash Transfers (CCTs) or baby bonds to reduce female infanticide, child marriage and promote girl’s education. Conditional cash transfer (CCT) schemes have been adopted to promote the survival and well-being of girls. They provide parents with financial incentives to raise daughters; to delay marrying them until age 18, and to reduce the gender imbalance in school. Given that many CCT programmes aimed at addressing girl children are relatively new, it has in many cases been too early to evaluate their effectiveness. There is thus limited evidence of the impact of their implementation and outcomes. This helpdesk report focuses on recent studies, published in the past five years, on select programmes implemented in South Asia, particularly in India, for which there is the most available information. Evidence suggests that CCT programmes aimed at supporting the girl child have succeeded in promoting school enrolment and delaying marriage in South Asia. It is less clear, however, the extent to which these transfers have affected gender-biased sex selection.

Abstract:
Exposure to good peers of either sex during middle school reduces the probability that top-performing girls are placed in one of their preferred high schools. High-achieving boys have a detrimental effect on the selectiveness of the schools in which top female students are placed. These placement effects are driven by both lower admission scores and weakened preferences for selective and academic schools. Exposure to high-achieving girls improves the admission exam scores of poor-performing girls. This protective effect on scores translates into an average increase in the selectivity of the high schools in which low-performing girls are placed.

Abstract:
This study examines the gendered effects of early and sustained exposure to high-performing peers on female educational trajectories. Exploiting random allocation to classrooms within middle schools, we measure the effect of male and female high performers on girls' high school placement outcomes. We disentangle two channels through which peers of either sex can play a role: academic performance and school preferences. We also focus on the effects of peers along the distribution of baseline academic performance. Exposure to good peers of either sex reduces the degree to which high-achieving girls seek placement in more-selective schools. High-achieving boys have particularly strong, negative effects on high-performing girls' admission scores and preferences for more-selective schools. By contrast, high-achieving girls improve low-performing girls' placement outcomes, but exclusively through a positive effect on exam scores.

Zibani, Nadia. Ishraq: Safe spaces to learn, play and grow: Expansion of recreational sports program for adolescent rural girls in Egypt. Population Council, 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/pgy22.1003.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past three years, the Ishraq program in the villages of northern El-Minya, Egypt, grew from a novel idea into a vibrant reality. In the process, approximately 300 rural girls have participated in a life-transforming chance to learn, play, and grow into productive members of their local communities. Currently other villages—and soon other governorates—are joining the Ishraq network. Ishraq is a mixture of literacy, life-skills training, and—for girls who have been sheltered in domestic situations of poverty and isolation—a chance to play sports and games with other girls their age and develop a sense of self-worth and mastery; the program reinforces the lessons they receive in life-skills classes about hygiene, nutrition, and healthy living. This guide to the sports and games component of the program is geared to the needs of disadvantaged adolescent girls. It is intended for those in the development community interested in the potential of sports to enhance the overall impact of adolescent programs. Sports can be combined with other program components to give girls a more active experience, whether the primary focus is reproductive health, literacy, or livelihood skills.

Abstract:
Bringing a feminist intent to research, monitoring and evaluation practices leads to defining these as tools to contribute to transforming the lives of women, girls and non-binary people, and to bringing about social justice. This has meant putting gender and power at the centre of our practice, which has in turn shaped the technical choices made specifically in quantitative impact evaluations. This paper focuses on describing how these technical choices, as well as ethical considerations, are changed by this feminist intent. The paper also presents the lessons learned and questions raised along the way, which may be useful for MEAL and research practitioners, as well as programme managers. How can we bring intersectionality to the fore? What does it mean to go beyond the gender binary? How can this work be transformative?

Idris, Iffat. Promotion of Freedom of Religion or Belief. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2021.036.

Full text
Abstract:
Freedom of religion or belief (FoRB) is a fundamental human right. However, the general global trend in recent years is towards increased FoRB violations by both government and non-government actors. Notable exceptions are Sudan and Uzbekistan, which have shown significant improvement in promoting FoRB, while smaller-scale positive developments have been seen in a number of other countries. The international community is increasingly focusing on FoRB. External actors can help promote FoRB through monitoring and reporting, applying external pressure on governments (and to a lesser extent non-government entities), and through constructive engagement with both government and non-government actors. The literature gives recommendations for how each of these approaches can be effectively applied. This review is largely based on grey (and some academic) literature as well as recent media reports. The evidence base was limited by the fact that so few countries have shown FoRB improvements, but there was wider literature on the role that external actors can play. The available literature was often gender blind (typically only referring to women and girls in relation to FoRB violations) and made negligible reference to persons with disabilities.

Rost, Lucia, Amber Parkes, and Andrea Azevedo. Measuring and Understanding Unpaid Care and Domestic Work: Household Care Survey Toolkit. Oxfam, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.21201/2020.6775.

Full text
Abstract:
This toolkit provides guidance on using Oxfam’s Household Care Survey (HCS) methodology, which was developed by Oxfam as part of the WE-Care initiative to transform the provision of unpaid care and domestic work (UCDW). UCDW underpins all our lives yet is overwhelmingly provided by women and girls. Recognising UCDW is essential for any initiative that aims to understand and address gender inequality. The HCS is a quantitative survey tool that generates context-specific evidence on how women, men and children spend their time, how care is provided, by whom, and the main factors that affect people’s responsibilities for UCDW, such as access to care services, infrastructure and social norms. The HCS can be used to generate a baseline, or to measure the impact of a specific policy or programme. The methodology can be integrated into different projects with different objectives and adjusted for use in various contexts. The HCS toolkit is designed to be used by development practitioners, policy makers, employers, academics and researchers. Part A provides guidance for planning, collecting, analysing and using HCS data. Part B provides guidance for understanding, adjusting and using the HCS questions. Both sections should be read before undertaking the survey.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of this paper is on the complementary mechanisms and interventions likely to increase the effectiveness and impact of conditional cash transfer (CCT) schemes in South Asia that aim to reduce female infanticide and child marriage and promote girls’ education. The literature on the institutional aspects of these particular schemes is limited, but from this and from the wider literature on CCT programmes in similar contexts, the following institutional mechanisms are likely to enhance success: a strong information and communication strategy that enhances programme reach and coverage and ensures stakeholder awareness; advance agreements with financial institutions; a simple and flexible registration process; appropriate use of technology to strengthen access, disbursement, and oversight; adequate implementation capacity to support processes of outreach, enrolment, and monitoring; monitoring and accountability mechanisms embedded in programme design; coordination mechanisms across government across social protection schemes; an effective management information system; and the provision of quality services in the sectors for which conditions are required. There is a very limited body of evidence that explores these institutional issues as they apply to the specific CCT programmes that are the focus of this report, however, there is more available evidence of the potential impact of ‘cash-plus’ programmes, which complement the transfers with other interventions designed to enhance their results or address the structural barriers to well-being
