Abstract:
Abstract In the Valencian Community in Spain, the coexistence of Spanish and Catalan as co-official languages and English as a foreign language, which is learned as a third language (L3), shapes a unique multilingual setting. This study examined the extent to which multilingual learners’ use of two interpersonal pragmatic markers (PMs), i.e., hedges (e.g., I believe) and attitude markers (e.g., fortunately), is related across languages and whether the relationship changes over time. Participants were 313 Spanish-Catalan bilingual high school learners of L3 English. They wrote three opinion essays over one academic year in the three languages of instruction: Spanish, Catalan, and English. Quantitative results revealed a trend towards stronger correlations over time in both PMs. At Time 3, correlations were statistically significant for all language pairs in hedges and for two language pairs in attitude markers (Spanish and Catalan, Spanish and English). Qualitative analyses of the learners’ essays lend support to these results and show transfer at the phrase and discourse-level.

Abstract:
Translation is a par excellence cultural communication and translators are agents of cultural transfer by means of language. Literary texts provide the translator with a higher grade of freedom than any other type of texts because of the self-referentiality of art encoded in language. Decoding the original and creating a new body in a different referential system are individual hermeneutic acts of the translator. Deciphering an author’s world is a step closer to the heart of the source culture and an ever-open language-game. The challenges I met translating Irene Solà’s novel gave me a special insight to Catalan culture and the English, Italian and Spanish translations gave me the opportunity to study other translation strategies. This essay is the first in the series of traductography essays centred on the Catalan-Hungarian intercultural communication revealing the processes in the black-box of the translator’s mind that on the one hand can serve as a guide to Catalan culture and, on the other hand, as a basis for further translatology research.

Abstract:
This essay offers a few meditations on what the language and the homeland repre sent for the philosophy. These thoughts are motivated by the publication, in the present issue of Estudios, of the Essays from Catalan by Eduardo Nicol, philosopher who was forced to produce his works not only from exile from his homeland, but in a, to a certain extent, foreign language. The aim, nonetheless, is not to propose the corresponding questions from a particular nationalist point of view, but from a universal metaphysical one, activity to which Nicol devoted himself throughout his entire work.

El eclipse de este ámbito de investigación no se debe, en modo alguno al agotamiento de sus fuentes, antes bien, en este trabajo se muestra cómo existen fuentes prácticamente inéditas que permitirían ampliar hacia atrás el marco cronológico de Cataluña en la Carrera de Indias extendiéndolo hacia el siglo XVI.AbstractThe anniversary of the publication of a fundamental work in the Catalan and Spanish historiography of the Early Modern period , Carlos Martínez Shaw’s Cataluña en la Carrera de Indias, serves not only to pay a worthy tribute to the author, but also as the starting point of an essay reflecting on the evolution followed by line of research which, opened by Cataluña en la Carrera de Indias, bore its best results in the last two decades of the last century, but which has currently disappeared from the research agendas of the Catalan universities. Relations between Catalonia and America have thus been left at the mercy of the distorted opinions of supposed researchers. The eclipse of this area of research is not at all due to the drying-up of its sources, and this paper shows that there are practically unpublished sources which would make it possible to extend the time frame of Cataluña en la Carrera de Indias back to the sixteenth century.

Abstract:
This essay is an exploration of Seneca’s influence on the bilingual (Catalan and Castilian) production, including poems and prose works, of Fra Francesc Moner, an extraordinarily talented Catalan writer of the late Middle Ages. After sampling Moner’s pithy renditions of Seneca’s sententious rhetoric, this essay delves into Moner’s assimilation of the salient topics and motifs that distinguish the Stoic philosophical system of Senecan vintage. The essay takes into account, particularly, some points of coincidence between Moner’s senequismo and that of Ausiàs March, the incomparable Valencian poet of the first half of the fifteenth century. An analysis of these coincidences suggests that Moner inherits from March a keen sensitivity to the metaphysical bond between the literary text as an icon of subjectivity and the moment-to-moment unfolding of human existence.

Abstract: This essay represents an approach to the phenomenon of social emulation as to feeding and the objects around it. Some of the most representative works by Ramon Llull, Francesc Eiximenis and Vicent Ferrer are studied for this purpose, for they fiercely criticized the moral of those ordinary and humble individuals that wished to eat and drink like the rich. Relying on the perceptions and statements contained in their writings, this essay addresses which aspects of the food of the elites could be reproduced by common people, how food fashions could spread, and why it all was so severely attacked by these authors. Keywords: social emulation, food, materiality, Catalan literature, later Middle Ages.

Abstract:
This essay applies Valerie Flint’s thesis about the adoption of astrology and derivative forms of prognostication by the medieval Catholic Church to Catalan treatises on astrology. Two main arguments against the practice of magic in the Middle Ages actually favored the development of astrology and astrological magic. By demonstrating that astrology does not subjugate free will to celestial bodies or contravene God’s authority, Christian astrologers smuggled it into the mainstream of scientific practice. Catalan scholars contributed to this defense, providing textual evidence from the thirteenth to the late fifteenth centuries. The use of these two arguments to defend astrology will become so embedded in the literature that, by the late fifteenth century, such defenses appear as commonplaces. We find them even in popular texts on astrological lore, far removed from their original context as part of academic and theological discourse.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Paraules clau: Teresa d’Àvila, poesia carmelitana, manuscrits, àmbit català Abstract: In this essay we address one of the most important poetic subgenres in the tradition of Carmelite women: the works composed for ceremonies of vestition and solemn profession in which the nuns left behind his mundane life and opened a new life as the wife of Jesus. First of all, we provide a general overview of the customs and functions of the poetry in the Discalced Carmelites, which has been already analysed in the context of the Hispanic literature, but rarely from the perspective of the Catalan area. Secondly, we present and contextualize a corpus of twenty-five unpublished compositions on vestitions and professions, copied in the manuscript of the Discalced Carmelites of Barcelona. Keywords: Teresa d’Àvila, Carmelite Poetry, Manuscripts, Catalan area

During the last few months, ever years, in Spain, we have witnessed the worsening of the problem of Catalan nationalism and its claim to independence. Beyond the particularities of the Catalan issue, this question involves a broader need to restructuring a State capable of accommodating all regions in our country. This essay aims to look at the past and analyze how the Spanish Second Republic – a Democratic reference in current Spanish society – tried to rearticulate Spain’s regional and cultural diversity in such a tumultuous decade as that of the 1930s.

Abstract:
This essay uses frequency of appearance as a tool of linguistic analysis to look at the syllable structure of Central Catalan. Analysis of syllable frequency has been conducted on an oral text produced by an speaker of this variety of Catalan; the solutions that appear in the phonetic version of the text have been tallied and classified in terms of consonant-vowel (CV, VC, CCV, etc.) on the one hand, and as concrete segments on the other (liquid + vowel, vowel + obstruent, etc.). The results have been studied according to George N. Clements (1990), The Role of the Sonority Cycle in Core Syllabification, in which degrees of complexity are assigned to different syllable types. This study attempts to determine to what extent the complexity of a syllable structure may be proportionate to its frequency of appearance in Catalan.

Abstract:
This essay analyzes what I call processes of destitution as a result of the various social movements that took place in Spain throughout the 2010s. I argue that the exhaustion of the Regime of ’78 meant an epistemological turn away from hegemonic concepts such as consensus, truth, and historical agreement toward those central to a new destituent process: dissent, divergence, and plurality, among others. Over the course of this essay, I carry out a genealogical review of the two intersecting social movements of the period which drove that change: first, the anti-austerity movement—better known as the indignados, or 15M, movement and its political derivatives, such as municipal platforms, the “mareas,” and Podemos—and second, the Catalan pro-independence movement. Finally, based on Carl Schmitt's political theology, I study the Spanish State's reaction beginning in 2017 as the creation of a state of exception based on the intensification of “the political” and on a shift in the “friend/enemy” paradigm, from a relationship between nation-states to an intranational relationship between the Spanish State and the Catalan pro-independence movement.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Like many other regions in Europe, Catalonia has seen significant changes in the demographics of motherhood over recent decades, with decreasing fertility rates and an increase in the average age of women at the birth of the first child. Together with increased social awareness of gender and identity issues such as gestational loss or the sexual and reproductive rights of people with disabilities, this changing landscape seems to have had a noteworthy impact on contemporary Catalan theatre. Indeed, throughout the long 2010s, a significant number of female-authored plays focused on motherhood premiered in Catalan venues, and a significant portion of these addressed doubtful, fraught, and denied access to motherhood. This essay analyses four important works associated with this trend: Júlia & The Empty Lot (2018) and To Be a Mother (2021) by Clàudia Cedó, Conversations With My Uterus and Other Interlocutors (2018) by Núria Planes Llull, and Stigmas (2019) by Concha Milla. These plays respectively address the experience of perinatal loss, the desire of women with disabilities to become mothers, doubts concerning one’s maternal desire, and the consequences of infertility and assisted reproductive technology processes. The analysis is based on dramatic and video criticism, accompanied by a study of performance documentation and paratexts. This essay contends that the analysed plays shed light on the tension between hegemonic narratives around motherhood and the actual experiences of contemporary Catalan women in terms of access to motherhood, which can be fraught with social, political, or physiological obstacles, as well as denied to certain subjects who have historically been excluded from womanhood, such as women with disabilities. In so doing, the plays expand the available narratives for what we understand as motherhood while elaborating feminist responses to the lived experiences they bring to the stage.

Abstract:
In 1492 the first edition of the bestselling almanac, the Reportorio de los tiempos, was published by Pablo Hurus in Zaragoza. Written by the converso Andrés de Li, the Reportorio incorporated in toto the Lunari, a Catalan text by Bernat de Granollachs, and published in 1485 in Barcelona. The Lunari contained month by month lunar charts of the years 1485 to 1550. These two works were enormously popular and versions of them appeared in over ninety editions in French, Catalan, Castilian, Latin, and Italian. It was probably the extreme popularity of Granollachs’ text that led to its expansion by Li and the subsequent success of the Reportorio. In the early days of printing, the success of each volume, and indeed the survival of the press, was determined for the most part by the type of work selected for production. This essay explores the evolution of the Lunari to the Reportorio de los tiempos, particularly in terms of text selection, marketability, and medieval traditions of textual incorporation.

Abstract:
It has often been noted that Violant de Bar, wife of Joan I and Queen of Aragon 1387-96, played an important role in the diffusion of humanistic or pre-humanistic culture in the Crown of Aragon. Indeed, Violant encouraged the spread of French customs throughout the kingdom, particularly the new literary currents that contributed to the study of classical authors, and in so doing appears to have caused a true cultural revolution. Her influence continued even after the death of King Joan in 1396. This essay attempts to determine the real cultural impact of Violant de Bar’s presence in the Crown of Aragon by answering the following questions: Did Catalan literary culture undergo a renewal in the 14th century brought about by Violant? Did Catalan humanism originate from a French rather than an Italian model? Was Violant’s legacy truly revolutionary, and what changes did it occasion in the literature produced in the peninsula between the late 14th and mid-15th centuries?

Abstract Two Galician poems (one from each of two collections: Cantares Gallegos and Follas novas) by Spain’s most renowned poetess are examined in this critical essay, which includes translations into English, Spanish and Catalan together with an analysis of both poems and a commentary on each with a discussion of such technicalities as metre, rhyme, imagery, lexis and syntax insofar as they aff ect the end-product in each case. The essay discusses the linguistic features of Galician as a preliminary to the appreciation of the poems, draws attention to Rosalia’s statements on her art and works, and concludes with a review of the pertinent aspects of poetry in translation — its theory and practice. In Yo maté a Kennedy, Manuel Vázquez Montalbán wrote with irony: “ecological truth drives historical truth.” Today, the direct connection between ecological and historical truths is quite serious. In his polemical essay “Four Theses on Climate History,” Dipesh Chakrabarty argues that, in order to explain anthropogenic climate change, geological history should be included in human history. In other words, “ecological truth” should be integral to “historical truth.” What is missing in this observation is a sense of socio-political difference. What is needed is not a consideration of isolated regions, whether they are national, ecological or linguistic, but rather an analysis that investigates a constellation of social movements, objects and events. This means that transatlantic ecocriticism should consider how regions are connected, thinking in line with the logics of movements such as the indignados, vía campesina or altermundisme. This essay approaches a series of steps between Spain and Cuba, examining various texts and terrains that are stylistically and historically distinct. I focus on the tropes of the island and the archipelago in the works of Cuban poet José Lezama Lima and the Catalan writer Francesc Serés. Abstract:
In recent years, there has been an increasing production of narratives that reassess various aspects of the Spanish Civil War and its aftermath. While many deal with prisons, work camps, and other cases of the mistreatment and suffering of the “vencidos,” some examine actions by factions on the Republican side, including Ignacio Martínez de Pisón’s Enterrar a los muertos, which investigates the assassination of author José Robles by Communist Party forces. Prior to all this activity, Catalan author and activist Teresa Pàmies had already contributed her own very personal and, at the same time, more general reexamination of the Communist Party’s actions during the war and after in Els anys de lluita (2001), which is formulated as a letter to her granddaughter. In this text, we see her analyze mistakes and attempt to explain political decisions and positions. Her situation is representative of many Spanish intellectuals of her generation who, after an early alliance with the Communists, eventually had to come to terms with the reality of Stalinism, the Prague Spring, and the errors that were made during the Civil War. Pàmies and her father, Tomàs, have always been associated with revolution and commitment to workers’ movements. From her early days as a leader in the Catalan Communist youth organization during the Civil War and throughout her exile, Teresa was a champion of the Communist Party. This essay explores how this text represents a significant change in the rhetoric typically found in her memoirs and other accounts of the war and her exile. With this volume, Pàmies makes a significant contribution to the necessary revision of a part of Spanish and Catalan history.

AbstractLanguages are a defining identity component, intrinsic to all individuals and societies. Identities are not fixed but ever fluctuating, hence the process of learning a second or foreign language may entail a negotiation of shifting identities, modifying positioning, attitudes and beliefs. Departing from this premise, in multilingual contexts the potential of education in shaping multilingual identities should be addressed. This study contrasts the attitudes of two groups of secondary education students (n=73), partaking in two different language learning programmes in the Balearic Islands (formal instruction in English as a Foreign Language –EFL, and Content and Language Integrated Learning –CLIL), where the introduction of English as a medium of instruction may be perceived as a threat to the unbalanced coexistence of Spanish and Catalan as the majority and minority languages, respectively. A 31-item questionnaire quantified the values ascribed to multilingualism, Spanish, Catalan, and English, the internationalisation of the latter, and the perception of the classroom as a genuine community of language practice. Qualitative data were collected through an essay eliciting students’ metalinguistic reflection on the position of different languages in their future imagined communities. The results shed light on the relevance of teaching methodologies in the development of identities, ascertaining the positive impact of integrative approaches such as CLIL on the construction of summative multilingualism.

En un momento político caracterizado por la innegable radicalización de los partidos nacionalistas que desde 2010 gobiernan Cataluña, concretada en la reiterada manifestación de su intención de separarse de España —bien de manera negociada, bien mediante una declaración unilateral de independencia—, y por la insoslayable existencia de una corriente de opinión numéricamente importante y socialmente muy influyente favorable a esa separación, el objetivo de este trabajo es el de levantar acta de los sucesivos proyectos o borradores de constitución para una futura Cataluña independiente surgidos en los últimos meses a la sombra de este así llamado «proceso», para a continuación tratar de desbrozar su contenido, advertir de sus carencias, poner de relieve los aspectos más relevantes —y también más controvertidos— de su articulado, y valorar sus posibilidades reales de llegar a convertirse alguna vez en norma jurídica, y —en última instancia— tratar de hallar algunos rasgos comunes a todos ellos que permitan entender mejor los objetivos últimos del secesionismo catalán en lo tocante a la configuración constitucional del Estado que aspira a conformarIn a political situation characterized by the undeniable radicalization of the nationalist parties that have been governing Catalonia since 2010, as expressed by the repeated demonstration of their intention to secede from Spain —either through negotiation or by a unilateral declaration of independence—, and by the inescapable existence of a numerically important and socially influential public opinion in favor of the separation, the objective of this essay is, firstly, to record the successive draft constitutions for a future independent Catalonia that have been made public in recent months in the middle of this so-called “process”; then to clarify and sistematize their contents, noting its shortcomings, and highlighting the most relevant aspects —and also the more controversial ones— of their provisions; to assess their real chances of ever becoming standard legal norms; and —ultimately— to find some common features to all of them in order to better understand the ultimate objectives of Catalan separatism as regards the constitutional configuration of the State that it aspires to conform.

Abstract:
Abstract This critical essay examines the literary and linguistic features of two short stories by Mercé Rodoreda, the best-known Catalan woman writer of the twentieth century. Chosen from among others published together under the general title of La meva Cristina i altres contes (My Christina and other stories), these are thought to be fairly representative of the style and content of the collection as a whole. Written under the infl uence of Ovid, Joyce, Kafk a, Sartre and the Symbolists, the author mingles direct and indirect styles and uses ‘monologue’ as an alternative to narration in the third person to delineate the character of their protagonists through the medium of speech with another person who cannot (as in La Mainadera) and probably does not (in Amor) respond. The result is an evocative, lyrical prose as important for what it says as for how it says it. Ingenuity of expression and interpretation, malice in the choice of its elements, insinuation and irony are its chief characteristics.

In opposition to the process of integration at the European level, there is an increasing desire for independence within a number of European States such as in Catalonia’s case. Catalans invoke the right to self-determination and argue that they have a right to secession according to international law and that the Spanish Constitution of 1978 does not contradict this right. This essay analyzes the conflict between the principles of territorial integrity and self-determination in international law and explores the challenge which the secessionist movements pose for the European Union.

Abstract:
From the moment El mètode Grönholm first opened as part of Projecte T-6 (2003), a breeding ground for new playwrights, it became a cultural phenomenon in Barcelona. This play by Jordi Galceran enjoyed a successful and recordbreaking run at the Teatre Poliorama under the subtle direction of Sergi Belbel. In addition to garnering critical praise the play also achieved the success that Catalan audiences usually reserve for more commercial offerings and rarely for a new work. The plot revolves around four candidates for an executive-level position at a multinational company. The application and interview process the candidates must undergo soon turns into a twisted psychological game where reality and fiction merge while a corrosive power struggle takes place until the surprising ending. This essay analyzes how Galceran’s text acerbically critiques the new Catalan society whose ascension has coincided with the arrival of socio-economic policies that have not only transformed the city but also forced its citizens to adapt rapidly to a brand new set of rules —the realm of liquid modernity as coined by Zygmunt Bauman. By infusing his play with copious references to a Catalunya that cannot handle the transition and the depravity of the present, the playwright simply retells a story that mirrors the process his audience undergoes daily amid the aseptic and überdesigned space named Barcelona.

The essay deals with the five rulings dictated by the Constitutional Court in 2014-15 in relation with the secessionist process started in Catalonia in 2012. Most of the cases follow the procedure of section 161.2 Spanish Constitution and Title V of the Organic Law of the Constitutional Court. They are focused on i) the constitutionality of two resolutions passed by the Catalan Parliament on the right to decide, the sovereignty of Catalan people and the beginning of the political and constituent processes and ii) the regulation and exercise of the instruments to reach the secessionist process followed until now: a so-called popular consultation without referendum and a participatory process. The rulings take into account the contradiction of the norms and acts contested with the Constitution, in both substantive and allocation of powers perspectives. For the Court the constitutional amendment is ineluctable to confront the secessionist process. We conclude that the Constitutional Court assumes in the different rulings differently the obligations of a pluralist and of a constitutional democracy.

Abstract:
In the summer of 1920 Joan Salvat-Papasseit (1894-1924), arguably the best-known poet of the Catalan avant-garde, published a series of five poems in Castilian in one of Spain’s most influential literary magazines of that time: Grecia (Sevilla-Madrid, 1918-1920). Interestingly, these poems which comprise his only verse in Castilian do not appear in any of the anthologies of Salvat’s completed poetic works. The purpose of this essay, then, is threefold: (1) To present and reproduce the five poems; (2) To contextualize the circumstances under which they appeared in addition to analyzing their content; and (3) To suggest that Salvat-Papasseit’s role as a bridge between Barcelona and Madrid so as to offer at least a glimpse of an alternative, more unified version of the history of the Spanish avant-garde. Since the poets in Madrid never fully developed a Castilian version of Futurism but rather by 1919 fused some of its ideals into the mélange that was Ultraísmo, these five Castilian poems by Salvat may be seen as emblematic of what could have been a Castilian Futurist movement. Catalan Futurism was not Italian Futurism, but it shared many of its principles, and poets like Salvat tried to put those principles into practice. The publication of these poems in Madrid at this particular point in time proves that Salvat-Papasseit’s contribution to Ultraísmo and, more generally, to the spirit of the avant-garde in Madrid, was considerably more important than literary histories have so far led us to believe.

Abstract:
This article analyzes the contribution of the new Catalan documentary in the current process of reclaiming the collective historical memory repressed by Francoism and by the Silence Deal established during the political transition to democracy after Franco’s death. This analysis will consider some films that use the family metaphor as a national allegory to represent the plight of the Catalan nation. The main thesis of this study is to underline the need for reparation regarding the crimes committed by Francoism during and after the Spanish Civil War and the fact that such a reparation has not taken place neither in fiction nor in historical terms. This essay relies on the post-Derridian concept of “hauntology” as a theoretical framework to study the spectral textual encounters that mark the symptoms of an uninterrupted mourning process that appeals to the historical memory in search of dignity and closure. Methodologically, this study offers a close textual reading of Jesús Garay’s film Mirant al cel (Eyes on the Sky, 2008) as a perfect case study where the spectral conflict between victims and victimizers is acted out in the context of Barcelona and Catalonia and the series of urban mass bombings carried out by the Italian Royal Legion under the direct supervision of Il Duce, Mussolini. Garay’s film special relevance lies in the fact of its being one of the few documentaries that revisits those three dramatic days in March 1938 that became a tragic rehearsal of the massive urban aerial raids of the Second World War.

Abstract:
This paper examines the museum dedicated to Pierre Soulages and its relationship with Soulages, the city of Rodez, the Forirail Garden (which is the site of the museum), and the ideas and practices realised by Catalan architects Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem and Ramon Vilalta (RCR). The Musée Soulages is defined by the colour black and the luminous fluidity of steel as designed by RCR Arquitectes; it is also aligned with an environmental ecology that literally and figuratively represents the town of Rodez with its Notre-Dame Cathedral. The central thesis is that the Musée Soulages inducts the visitor into a role of active participation and exchange in an atmosphere of transcendental logic, and, ultimately, a new way to experience black as a colour rather than the lack of one. A visitor to the Musée Soulages becomes part of a theatrical event in which two actors —one French abstract painter, three Catalan architects—communicate in physical terms about the metaphysical environment, and the relationship between the scenographic and the tectonic in architecture. The Musée Soulages is a fascinating metaphorical representation of not only Pierre Soulages's character and his work, but also of the role of the built environment and material culture that is intertwined with the body of Soulages's expressive works. This essay focuses on the material and symbolic gestures created by Pierre Soulages and RCR Arquitectes to maintain and promote their particular world views, and examines the ways in which their expressive mediums and ideas are by turn harmonious and contradictory.

Abstract This study investigates the impact that a semester-long study abroad program has on the L2 reading and vocabulary development of a group of Catalan/Spanish bilinguals learning English as an L2 (n = 30). Another objective is to determine whether gains in participants’ vocabulary and reading – if any – are related to their initial L2 proficiency and L2 vocabulary level. Participants were administered (1) a reading text, (2) the Updated Vocabulary Levels Test, (3) a written essay, (4) a placement test and (5) an online questionnaire before and after their SA experiences. The results suggest that the sojourn was positive for participants’ reading comprehension, receptive vocabulary and lexical accuracy, but not for reading fluency, lexical fluency, lexical density and lexical sophistication. It was also found that the students’ initial L2 vocabulary and proficiency level were related to gains in receptive vocabulary and reading comprehension.

Our research is double-focused: on the one hand it examines issues of empire, colonisation, and orientalism, and on the other hand it explores issues of modernity and feminism. The travel texts under study offer personal registrations of self-fashioning strategies that both authors employ, which significantly question gender expectations regarding women’s social and sexual practices, their professional, familial and marital roles, and their opportunities for education. Presenting them as emancipated modern women, however, the accounts are also embedded in an orientalist and colonial discourse and seem to impose their own views of modernity and feminism on other women–despite ardent appeals to intercultural understanding.

Abstract:
This essay revises post-15M movement political party landscape, emphasizing the intentional yet unusual use of the present within the New Left's organizing grammar. Against sectors of the traditional Left, who see presentism as a product of neoliberalism, I claim that in the post-15M conjuncture, the present constituted a battleground in the struggle for a dignified life. First, I focus on the Catalan left-wing nationalist party CUP's use of anarchist symbols to suggest that references to sabotage were deployed to disrupt parliamentary politics, forcing constant interruption. Second, I analyze Podemos founding member Iñigo Errejón's speech after the party's 2016 national election defeat, where his rhetoric linked the temporality of the present with anti-austerity protestors’ embodied presence. Last, I read the rise of neomunicipalisms as another iteration of presentism, aiming to politicize everyday life. To conclude, I advance that such material practices of “generative presentism” problematize presentism's assumed depoliticizing nature.

Abstract:
This article focuses on the biographical novel, Pas pleurer (2014) and the author Lydie Salvayre’s development of two diametrically opposed experiences of the Spanish civil war. Pas pleurer deploys the author’s parallel engagement with Montse, Salvayre’s mother, and with Georges Bernanos through a reading and commentary of the polemical essay, Les Grands Cimetières sous la lune. Biographical material provides the ground for intersecting narratives: on the one hand, the Bernanos intertext with its keen analysis of the complicity of secular and religious institutions to maintain control of Spain through terrorism and violence reverberates throughout and finds its echo in the tragic story of Montse’s older brother José. Set against this is the adolescent Montse’s encounter with the dramatic social revolution underway in the Catalan city and her life-altering experience of passionate love, the memory of which remains intact and luminous despite age and disease. Examining both n arratives highlights the act of resistance at the heart of the novel and captured by its title.

This essay discusses translation and translator choices in the context of importing a small-language poet into English-language circulation. Small-language imports play a modest but supporting role in counteracting the sort of cultural daltonism that screens any number of cultures and literatures from general global view. Taking the first English-language anthology of poetry by nineteenth-century Catalan-language poet Jacint Verdaguer (<i>Selected Poems of Jacint Verdaguer: A Bilingual Edition</i>, University of Chicago, 2007) as a case in point, the author/translator argues that if the native-culture value of poetic production is to be preserved in the new cultural and literary currency, contextual essentials (historical, social, literary) must be brought to light. Where the texts themselves are concerned, the translator of poetry must seek to re-create the form-content synthesis of the original, even as new intratextual and intertextual meanings and correspondences emerge in translation.

This essay examines the work of Joan Colom, a Catalan photographer who has come to receive a welter of honors, including the National Prize in Photography, but whose career has been anything but easy and uninterrupted. Colom’s fame derives largely from Izas, rabizas y colipoterras, a photo-book produced in collaboration with Camilo José Cela that focuses on the prostitutes of the Barri Xino of Barcelona and that quickly acquired a cult status among members of the “divine left” critical of Franco’s morally smug regime. Addressing tensions between amateurism and professionalism, art and documentation, the studio and the street, and the image and the word, Fontcuberta presents Colom’s work as a radiography in which the camera serves as an instrument of political critique and the vibrancy and sordidness of street life come to the fore. Inimitable as the book is, it nonetheless allows for productive comparisons with more recent, feminist inflected work on streets, streetwalkers, and sex workers from beyond Barcelona: Susan Meiselas’s Carnival Strippers; Elisabeth B’s Das ist ja zum Peepen; Merry Alpern’s Dirty Windows, and Erika Langley’s The Lusty Lady.

Abstract:
Abstract This essay examines the groundbreaking work of Catalan art photographer Eugènia Balcells’s 1979 black and white series, Ophelia (variacions sobre una imatge) as an act of feminist re-appropriation of one of the most popular subjects of Victorian painting and early photography. Baleei Is reclaims the canonical literary character by reproducing John Everett Millais’s famous Ophelia (1852) in 37 black-and-white photocopies, then manipulating each of the images in ways that both reveal and resist the patriarchal constructs that informed earlier artists’ view of Shakespeare’s heroine as submissive, passive, ethereal-dead, asleep or in a melancholy trance. After a careful historical contextualization of nineteenth century images of Ophelia in painting and in commercial photography, Keefe Ugalde engages in a close reading of a dozen or more of Balcells’s images, explaining how the artist relied on postmodern conceptual art practices to critique, disparage or subvert the ways in which Ophelia served to anchor patriarchal representations of women, and particularly young desirable women, to traditional models of submissive femininity.

Abstract:
Heavy metal resistant bacteria are of great importance because they play a crucial role in bioremediation. In the present study, 11 bacterial strains isolated from industrial waste were screened under different concentrations of cadmium (Cd) (100 µM and 200 µM). Among 11 strains, the Cd tolerant Bacillus cereus (S6D1–105) strain was selected for in vitro and in vivo studies. B. cereus was able to solubilize potassium, and phosphate as well as produce protease and siderophores during plate essays. Moreover, we observed the response of hydroponically grown rice plants, inoculated with B. cereus which was able to promote plant growth, by increasing plant biomass, chlorophyll contents, relative water content, different antioxidant enzymatic activity such as catalase, superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase and reducing malondialdehyde content in both roots and leaves of rice plants under Cd stress. Our results showed that the B. cereus can be used as a biofertilizer which might be beneficial for rice cultivation in Cd contaminated soils.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This essay examines three different points of cultural contact between Muslims and Christians in medieval Iberia as documented in three different bodies of texts. In each example, the use of a lingua franca results in the exchange of cultural ideas and the re-presentation of one group in the language of another. The first point of contact is in the court of Córdoba in the early 9th century as recorded in an Arabic biography of a musician, which has survived only as excerpted in a later encyclopedia compiled across the Mediterranean in Syria in the 14th century. The second point of contact takes place only a few decades later, also in Córdoba, and is documented in a Latin epistle composed by a Christian during a period of increasing tension between Muslims and Christians. The third point of contact occurs in Aragon and Catalonia in the late 14th and early 15th century, where ‘Moorish’ and Jewish musicians and dancers were regularly hired to perform at the courts of the royal family and other nobles, the evidence for which is found in financial records composed in Old Catalan. Each of these examples provides evidence of cultural contact that could significantly change our understanding of the relationship between cultural and linguistic groups in this period.

Abstract:
The role of Mary in the Middle Ages has often been discussed in the context of theological or even social interpretations. A new collection of essays edited by Paul Bretel, Michel Adroher, and Aymat Catafau draws from that same tradition. But while most studies have specialized in certain aspects of the Marian tradition, this book proposes an interdisciplinary approach that encompasses both literary <?page nr="311"?>and artistic analysis. Relying heavily on works like Kathy M. Krauses’s Gautier de Coinci: miracles, Music and Manustripts (Turnhout: Brepols, 2006), La vierge dans les arts et les littératures du Moyen Age offers a multifaceted approach that proposes in turn new perspectives of studies on the role of Mary in the literature and art of the Middle Ages. Perhaps significantly, the authors have decided to include all the illustrations of the book in the middle section, offering at the same time a new examination of the works in a novel, unprecedented way. The different indexes (persons, authors, works, themes) speak also to the interdependence of all the articles and the value of this collection.
