Abstract:
Paraules clau: llengua catalana, historiografia lingüística, literatura de viatges, estatus i nom de la llengua catalana, usos lingüísticsAbstract: This paper examines the descriptions of the Catalan language by foreign travellers who travelled through the Catalan-speaking territories in the last third of the 19th century. It also analyses their observations and linguistic perceptions of the Catalan language, as well as the language spoken by the inhabitants of these territories. Regarding the second objective, we are particularly interested in knowing if they recognise that the language spoken by Valencians is the same as that of the Catalans, Majorcans, and other neighbours of the Catalan-speaking world; what position occupy the Catalan language among the rest of the Romance languages; if they consider that Catalan has the same status as Spanish and French or if they considered it was a dialect. In many cases they do not talk about the language in such detail because the purpose of their travels was different, but often from their different descriptions and statements we can deduce their positions and opinions to answer these questions. In the late 19th century, when Romance philology was a recently created discipline and it was not fully accepted that Catalan is an independent Romance language. Keywords: Catalan language, linguistic historiography, travel literature, status and name of the Catalan language, language uses

The Italianisms in Catalan: a balance and further perspectives
This article presents the research on Italianisms in the Catalan language carried out and in progress within the OIM project (Osservatorio degli Italianismi nel Mondo). The study is divided into two parts in relation to the research phases that have been followed. The first part is a work balance with a quantitative description of the information on Italianisms in the Catalan language collected in the OIM project. In particular, the terms are studied on the basis of their grammatical category, etymology, meaning, bibliographic sources and diachronic use. The second part investigates the possible ways of implementing the number of Catalan entries in the database and perfecting the validated ones, with the use of bibliographic titles that have just come out or are outgoing outside the OIM project, and through cross-comparison with the data relating to languages geographically close to Catalan collected in the database, demonstrating the dynamism of the OIM project.

Abstract:
Summary: The aim of this article is to show that the composition of a future Catalan/German / German/Catalan dictionary can only be carried out as follows: the Catalan part must be coordinated by a workgroup made up of Catalan, Valencian and Balearic researchers who will be responsible for the inclusion of relevant vocabulary. Therefore, the vocabulary of Valencian and Balearic lemmas in both dictionaries must appear with diatopic markings. Only by doing so will the reality of Catalan be assured as a language with a “diffuse and pluricentric standard”. In our opinion, this method will fully acknowledge the pluricentric character of the Catalan language. One must bear in mind that Catalan does not only have an ideal standard, as defined by the Institut d’Estudis Catalans (I.E.C.), but also what the author considers as a diffused standard one, that is, the spoken language used by the upper-middle class Catalan speaker. We thus consider that a future German-Catalan / Catalan-German Dictionary should take into account this diffused standard Catalan, which, after all, forms an integral part of the reality of the language. Abstract:

Abstract:
This study focuses on the work Los col·loquis de la insigne ciutat de Tortosa [Dialogues. A Catalan Renaissance Colloquy Set in the City of Tortosa] by the Catalan knight Cristòfol Despuig. While it was written around 1557, it was not published until 1877. My analysis demonstrates that the issue of language is raised in the Dialogues to defend the memory of the Catalan-Aragonese Empire in which the Principality of Catalonia has always been the dominant part, especially in the Catalan-speaking lands. The prestigious position of the Principality of Catalonia is supported by an explicit hierarchy of the varieties of the Catalan language in which the Catalan used in the Principality of Catalonia is considered superior. This explicit hierarchy implies two important ideological aspects: first, the idea of origin as the main criterion to value the different varieties of the language. Second, the description of the Valencian other as a palimpsest, since while Valencians were colonized first by Catalans and then by Castilians, the Catalan colonial presence can still be recovered. The otherness of the Valencian identity is represented by four linguistic aspects of the text: first, the Castilian name of the Valencian character: don Pedro. Second, don Pedro’s lack of awareness that Catalan was a courtly language. Third, don Pedro’s acknowledgement that the Catalan spoken in the Kingdom of Valencia has been contaminated by its contact with Castilian. Finally, the erasure of the literary achievements in Catalan in the Kingdom of Valencia during the reign of the Castilian Trastámara Dynasty in the Crown of Aragon (1412–1516). This erasure supports the superiority of the House of Barcelona-Aragon over the Trastámara Dynasty. Moreover, it supports a clear association between language and political power in which literature does not play an important role in the value of a language.

Abstract:
Summary: Standard Catalan is based on the Central dialect and, specifically, on Barcelona speech. However, there are standard variants for all dialects, except for the Northern one. Furthermore, the sociolinguistic situation in Northern Catalan differs from that in other Catalan-speaking territories in that the language has almost disappeared. Some cultural activists are still trying to recover the Catalan language by using it in as many situations as possible. The objective of this article is to analyse the variety of Catalan – standard or dialectal forms – used in literature, the media, and education and what this usage demonstrates about Northern Catalans’ attitudes towards their own language. Abstract: Antoni Bulbena Tosell is the author of an unpublished, pornographic vocabulary French-Catalan Catalan-French, a manuscript called the Flora pornogràfica francesa: suplement al argot francès / Flore pornographique catalane: supplément à l’argot catalan. It was written around 1921 and reserved for not being published. Bulbena is the author of a controversial linguistic work, among which are various dictionaries, some of them between Catalan and French. The latest is the Diccionari de les lléngues francesa & catalana / Dictionnaire catalan-français (1921), that includes two appendixes, a «Vocabulari d’argot francès» and a «Vocabulari d’argot catalan». The Flora is thus a pornographic supplement to the lexicon of these vocabularies. Moreover, the title Flora pornogràfica seems to refer to a pornographic French lexicography work that contains obscene words from books by Émile Zola and other naturalist writers: La flore pornographique (1883) by Ambroise Macrobe. Slang sexual terms from the Bulbena’s Flora, with a special focus on the theme of prostitution, have linguistic and cultural interest both for the Catalan and the French language Keywords: Antoni Bulbena, Flora pornogràfica, lexicography, Catalan, French.

Abstract:
Paraules clau: Segle XIX, Nom i identitat de la llengua catalana, Renaixença Valenciana, Benvingut Oliver, Joan Baptista Perales Abstract: This paper analyses the reaction of the Valencian scholars Benvingut Oliver and Joan Baptista Perales against postulates on the Catalan Romance philology in the middle of the nineteenth century. Moreover, this work tries to relate Oliver and Perales position with others scholars and writers of the Reinaixença Valenciana movement and the awareness of linguistic community shared with Catalan speakers from Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and North Catalonia. From the middle of the nineteenth century the German romanists found the Romance philology. They established “Catalan” as the name of the language of the Catalan-speaking areas. Even this is different from Occitan and has nothing to do with Limousin, which was known by this name since the early sixteenth century. Regarding the identity and the name of the Catalan language, these assumptions are quickly received and assumed in Catalonia. Although in the Balearic Islands and North Catalonia they were received positively with very few exceptions. Whereas in Valencia, only a minority of scholars like Benvingut Oliver and Joan B. Perales –among others– accepted and disseminated these postulates.

Abstract: This paper analyses the postulates of the non-Catalan-speaking Romanists about the origin, the identity and the name of the Catalan language between 1806 and 1906. Romance philology emerges in the 19th century and scholars started to categorize and study the different romance languages. Progressively, during this period, Romanists take into consideration the Catalan language and make statements about its origin —shared with the Occitan language or independent from the beginning—, its identity —subordinated to Occitan or autonomous as the other romance languages— and the name with which the language should be mentioned.

Abstract:
In the last two decades, the ecological approach has attracted the interest of Spanish and Catalan linguists. Nonetheless, until recently linguists stated a lack of connection of the fields of language ecology and language policy. The study of language and ecology has not yet become a matter of public interest; it only appears in scientific publications and the media using startling ecological metaphors such as threat of extinction, etc. This contribution analyses the language used both by professional linguists and laypeople in publications and in the public debate on the conflicts in Spanish and Catalan bilingualism in the decade before the constitutional and supreme courts ruled against the prevalence of the Catalan language in Catalonia (1999-2009). The decade analysed here can be characterized by a sensation of growing linguistic conflicts that manifested, for example, through heated debates over what Catalans perceived as life threatening for the Catalan language, on the one hand, and reactions such as demands for the introduction of additional teaching hours to prevent the alleged extinction of Spanish in Catalonia, on the other hand. The Catalan society is reliving the ghost of extinction of their language—probably reinforced by publications which denounce a continuous reduction of living space and the disappearance of more and more niches of the Catalan language. On the other hand, Castilian activists (and among them some linguists) maintain there is a battle the Castilian language in Catalonia has to win in order to survive the said-to-be ferocious reduction of its vital space and the asserted institutionalized suffocation or extermination of the Spanish language. The texts analysed in this contribution belong to a text series which regarding its content and aims corresponds to a reduced number of triggering reference texts. The aim is to determine the importance of the language of ecology in this field and the usage of these elements by both sides, those denouncing the threat of the Castilian language and those fearing the risk of extinction of the Catalan language. It will be shown that in the debate over the struggle for life of Catalan and Spanish in the Catalan speaking areas, the language of ecology and evolution is heavily used and that the re-contextualization of Catalan metaphors in the analysed Spanish texts is systematic.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the edition and study of the Catalan Grammar of Pau Cardellach i Busquets (1818-1879), an unpublished work of which there is only one copy, handwritten, today at the University of Girona. Cardellach's grammar, which only known by indirect references, is an original work that exemplifies a different outlook on the Catalan language than those we knew so far in the nineteenth century. Its study helps to better define the late process of grammatical encoding of Catalan, and enriches the history of philology of Catalan. The necessary work to contextualize this book has also demanded a thorough study of its author and the circumstances that led to his grammar. Therefore, the thesis is divided internally into three sections: a) the bio-bibliographic study of Pau Cardellach and the circumstances in which he produced his Catalan Grammar; b) the critical edition of the work, with attention to all material respects, to the textual problems and to interventions to make it available to scholars; and c) the detailed contents and peculiarities of grammar, and their relevance to contemporary grammatical context study

The doctoral thesis THE INTERVENTION OF JOAN COROMINES IN SOME OF THE GREAT EPISODES OF CATALAN LANGUAGE HISTORY IN THE XX CENTURY. The aim of the linguist was to continue modernising and codifying the language, a process that had already been started by Pompeu Fabra during the first three decades of the past Century. It also describes the input and contributions made by Coromines in regulating the Catalan language. The thesis proves that Coromines is an indispensable figure to understand the dynamic that the language has taken during the crucial twentieth century.

Abstract:
This dissertation is devoted to the study and partial edition of the Gazophylacium Catalano-Latinum by Joan Lacavalleria Dulac, a Catalan-Latin lexicographic thesaurus published in Barcelona in 1696 that constitutes the most extensive and exhaustive collection of Catalan lexicon of the seventeenth century. This work begins with a historical search around the members of Lacavalleria family and their time. Secondly, the sources used by Lacavalleria are identified and the extent of their followup is studied in the elaboration of the Gazophylacium. Thirdly, the elements that make up the structure of the thesaurus and the nature of the vocabulary it contains are analyzed. Fourth, an account on the reception of the thesaurus and its subseqüent influence over Catalan lexicography and linguistics is given. Fifth, the adopted criteria for the critical edition of the selected texts are reported. Abstract:
Languages use different resources to specify the numerosity of the referents and to denote the speech act participants. This thesis describes the morphophonological strategies used in Catalan Sign Language (LSC) personal pronouns to encode these distinctions. In a nutshell, I argue that the expression of person and number is achieved by using two interrelated strategies: person is expressed through spatial features (locations in the signing space which are defined in relation to the signer’s body), number is grammatically marked by the path specifications of the sign (movements connecting spatial locations). Combining these two operations results in the formal marking of three person distinctions (with a further contrast between exclusive, minimal inclusive and augmented inclusive in the first person) and four number values (singular, dual, paucal and plural).<br>Les llengües utilitzen diferents recursos per a expressar el nombre dels referents i designar als participants en els actes de parla.

"Wh-questions in Catalan sign language." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/397751.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation offers a characterization and an analysis of wh-questions in Catalan Sign Language, which show the particularity of placing wh-expressions canonically in sentence final position. This feature, specific to Sign Languages, has been difficult to deal with from traditional models, which have often considered that wh-movement is universally to the left and which have also often assumed that syntactic structure encodes information about the linear order of linguistic elements. The dissertation also argues that syntactic hierarchy and linear order are two different objects with a limited impact over one another, and that the latter is mainly dependent on the mechanisms of linguistic processing and, specifically, on Working Memory. In that sense, the hypothesis that the difference in the placing of wh-elements between Sign Languages and Spoken Languages is due to differences in Working Memory is put forwards.

Abstract:
This thesis provides a morphosyntactic description of polar questions and a pragmatic analysis of biased questions in Catalan Sign Language (LSC). Polar questions in LSC are obligatorily marked with a specific combination of non-manual marking features and optionally marked with a question particle. Given that, at least, the most prominent feature, eyebrow position, does not remain constant, LSC displays different combinations of non-manuals to mark this structure. Empirical evidence supports an analysis in which each combination of non-manuals conveys a different bias and a novel feature-based description system explains and predicts those. Therefore, each combination of non-manuals, as well as the appearance of the question particle, is shown to not only mark sentence type but also to encode specific pragmatic meanings.<br>Aquesta tesi ofereix una descripció morfosintàctica de les preguntes polars i una anàlisi pragmàtica de les preguntes esbiaixades en llengua de signes` catalana (LSC).

Abstract:
This thesis provides a description and a pragmatic analysis of the expression and interpretation of focus and contrast in Catalan Sign Language (LSC). I argue that LSC data provides empirical evidence that contrast is an independent notion in Information Structure that can overlap with topics and foci, and that involves different types, which are built compositionally. All types of contrast share a basic meaning (semantic parallelism), which is essential for an element to be contrastive, and which is expressed through a specific combination of non-manual markers (NMMs). Additional prosodic NMMs are used to trigger more complex meanings, like exhaustivity or counterexpectation. Moreover, a first description of focus particles and clefts in LSC is provided, together with a pragmatic analysis of exhaustivity and non-truth conditional meaning (presuppositions and implicatures) in these constructions.<br>Aquesta tesi proporciona una descripció i una anàlisi pragmàtica de l’expressió i la interpretació del focus i el contrast en llengua de signes catalana (LSC). Abstract:
The Catalan language has long had to deal with the competing presence of Castilian on its own territory. Defenders of Catalan, writers in particular, have striven to preserve a written language that would be both viable and “authentic”, that is to say free from Castilian influences. However, their concern about authenticity clashes with the constraint of plausibility in certain genres, where the use of informal spoken language is either required or simply useful, just as informal spoken Catalan is being pervaded with more and more lexical or syntactic castilianisms. The purpose of this thesis is to explore, through several contemporary texts published from 1979 to 2005, how writers of crime fiction, playwrights and realist novelists have dealt with this contradiction – either working against it, around it, or with it

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis gives a description and a syntactic analysis for coordination and gapping in conjunction in Catalan Sign Language (LSC) within the framework of Generative Grammar and Minimalism. Regarding coordination, Coordination Phrase (CoP) is proposed as the category for conjunctive, disjunctive and adversative coordination, assuming that the conjuncts are specifiers and complements of CoP in a right-branching coordination structure. The specific derivation for each types of coordination is then applied. As for gapping in conjunction, in LSC it shows similarities with VP-ellipsis, especially because it can appear also in subordination. Moreover, the availability of only distributed scope negation (¬A&¬B) and the presence of contrastive topic and contrastive focus require a large coordination structure, that is, CP coordination. In order to derive gapping, I propose movement of the arguments to TopP and FocP followed by the deletion of TP at PF, with [E] feature in the head of FocP.<br>Aquesta tesi ofereix una descripció i una anàlisi sintàctica per a la coordinació i el “gapping” en coordinació conjuntiva en llengua de signes catalana (LSC), dins el marc generativista i minimista.

AbstractDespite its vulnerable position as a minoritised language, the presence of Catalan in the digital sphere is relatively strong, thanks to an active online community with a high technological profile. Technological support for Catalan is slowly growing, following the recent advances in AI and increased awareness of the value of language data and technologies among public and private bodies. However, more effort is needed to promote the creation of open-source solutions and resources so as to lower the investment barrier for companies to build technology for Catalan.

Abstract:
This study investigates the narrative abilities of seven Spanish monolinguals and six Spanish – Catalan bilinguals with Prader–Willi syndrome. All participants were asked to narrate A boy, a dog, and a frog (Mayer, 1967) in Spanish. Additionally, bilinguals were also asked to narrate Frog, where are you? (Mayer, 1969) in Catalan. Both narrative corpora were analyzed according to their macrostructure (Narrative Scoring System) and microstructure (Mean Length per Utterance and Type-Token Ratio measures). Monolinguals and bilinguals showed similar macrostructural abilities as well as comparable morphosyntactic language development; however, a positive effect of bilingualism was detected when evaluating participants’ lexical variability. Bilingual speakers showed comparable narrative abilities in both Spanish and Catalan.

Abstract:
This paper studies structural convergence between two Romance languages that are in close contact. More specifically, it analyzes the differences in clitic realization and object omission in Spanish and Catalan. While in Spanish it is possible to omit phrases corresponding to direct objects based on their definiteness (Campos, 1986; Clements, 2006) and not to their syntactic position, Catalan does not regularly omit object pronouns but requires the use of the partitive en with indefinite antecedents. A five-point Likert scale grammaticality judgment task adapted from Bruhn de Garavito &amp; Guijarro-Fuentes (2002) was designed to measure the acceptability of different object expressions in 70 different constructions in Spanish by monolingual native speakers (n = 44) and Catalan-Spanish bilingual speakers (n = 34). In the task, participants read a short dialogue containing a question and a short answer and were asked to rate the naturalness of the answer. Linguistic variables included the type of syntactic structure (simple or complex clauses), the semantic properties of the referent (+/- definite), and the grammaticality of the utterance. Stimuli were replicated seven times per condition. Results indicated significant differences between monolinguals and bilinguals, as the latter systematically accept ample optionality concerning null direct objects. Conversely, differences according to language dominance in the bilingual group could not be verified. Our data allow us to discuss views on the realization of interpretable features and on bilingual variability.

With an increase in international student enrollment and participation in student mobility programs year over year, the goal of this project was to determine whether Microsoft Translate could be used as a simultaneous translation tool in the classroom to help foreign students understand course material, especially in situations where the instructor is not lecturing in a language the students are fluent in. This was tested in two master's level courses at a Catalan institution with mostly international students. The results suggest that the language of instruction, which was either English or Catalan, determined whether the participants perceived to comprehend the translation. Furthermore, speech style was essential, with scripted speech appearing to outperform unscripted speech. The goal of this study was to detect whether this program might be utilized to make university lectures more accessible to all students. The findings suggest that when the teacher uses scripted speech in the classroom, students of various language backgrounds seem to understand the key ideas of the lectures.

Full text
Abstract:
Social indexicality and enregisterment are basic notions of a theoretical model elaborated in the United States, the aim of which is to describe the relationship between the use of language variation and patterns of social behavior at the level of formal classification. This analytical approach is characterized by focusing on the interrelation of social performance and language awareness. In my contribution, I want to show how this modern methodology can give new impetus to the study of today’s problem areas in Europe, such as migration and language or urban life and language use. In particular, I am interested in the case of Catalan, which has been studied for some time by proponents of the North American enregisterment theory. This leads me to indicate that explicit forms of social conduct, such as language shift or the emblematic use of linguistic forms, can be interpreted with regard to the social indexicality of Catalan. I thus analyze them in a way which shows that authenticity and integration in Catalan society can be achieved to a considerable extent by practicing forms of linguistic enregisterment.

Full text
Abstract:
Whilst younger audiences move away from traditional forms of media consumption, public broadcasters – including those in minority languages – have long been facing declining viewing figures in terms of linear television. At the same time, social media consumption habits are diverging along a generational gap – younger audiences favour TikTok and Instagram over Facebook or Twitter. This blogpost sheds light on one element of this, analysing the attempts of institutional actors – in this case minority language broadcasters – to reach different audience segments by creating content directly through TikTok. Concentrated focus is placed on the Welsh language broadcaster S4C, the Galician language broadcaster TVG and the Catalan language broadcaster TV3, with the conclusions pointing towards greater levels of success for their sub-brands which adopt a less-formal, non-institutionalised approach. The positive examples suggest minority language media are finding ways to adapt to contemporary challenges and that their role for younger generations was perhaps neglected too soon by some critics.

Abstract:
The timing of dormancy induction and release is very important to the economic production of table grape. Advances in manipulation of dormancy induction and dormancy release are dependent on the establishment of a comprehensive understanding of biological mechanisms involved in bud dormancy. To gain insight into these mechanisms we initiated the research that had two main objectives: A. Analyzing the expression profiles of large subsets of genes, following controlled dormancy induction and dormancy release, and assessing the role of known metabolic pathways, known regulatory genes and novel sequences involved in these processes B. Comparing expression profiles following the perception of various artificial as well as natural signals known to induce dormancy release, and searching for gene showing similar expression patterns, as candidates for further study of pathways having potential to play a central role in dormancy release. We first created targeted EST collections from V. vinifera and V. riparia mature buds. Clones were randomly selected from cDNA libraries prepared following controlled dormancy release and controlled dormancy induction and from respective controls. The entire collection (7920 vinifera and 1194 riparia clones) was sequenced and subjected to bioinformatics analysis, including clustering, annotations and GO classifications. PCR products from the entire collection were used for printing of cDNA microarrays. Bud tissue in general, and the dormant bud in particular, are under-represented within the grape EST database. Accordingly, 59% of the our vinifera EST collection, composed of 5516 unigenes, are not included within the current Vitis TIGR collection and about 22% of these transcripts bear no resemblance to any known plant transcript, corroborating the current need for our targeted EST collection and the bud specific cDNA array. Analysis of the V. riparia sequences yielded 814 unigenes, of which 140 are unique (keilin et al., manuscript, Appendix B). Results from computational expression profiling of the vinifera collection suggest that oxidative stress, calcium signaling, intracellular vesicle trafficking and anaerobic mode of carbohydrate metabolism play a role in the regulation and execution of grape-bud dormancy release. A comprehensive analysis confirmed the induction of transcription from several calcium–signaling related genes following HC treatment, and detected an inhibiting effect of calcium channel blocker and calcium chelator on HC-induced and chilling-induced bud break. It also detected the existence of HC-induced and calcium dependent protein phosphorylation activity. These data suggest, for the first time, that calcium signaling is involved in the mechanism of dormancy release (Pang et al., in preparation). We compared the effects of heat shock (HS) to those detected in buds following HC application and found that HS lead to earlier and higher bud break. We also demonstrated similar temporary reduction in catalase expression and temporary induction of ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione reductase, thioredoxin and glutathione S transferase expression following both treatments. These findings further support the assumption that temporary oxidative stress is part of the mechanism leading to bud break. The temporary induction of sucrose syntase, pyruvate decarboxylase and alcohol dehydrogenase indicate that temporary respiratory stress is developed and suggest that mitochondrial function may be of central importance for that mechanism. These finding, suggesting triggering of identical mechanisms by HS and HC, justified the comparison of expression profiles of HC and HS treated buds, as a tool for the identification of pathways with a central role in dormancy release (Halaly et al., in preparation). RNA samples from buds treated with HS, HC and water were hybridized with the cDNA arrays in an interconnected loop design. Differentially expressed genes from the were selected using R-language package from Bioconductor project called LIMMA and clones showing a significant change following both HS and HC treatments, compared to control, were selected for further analysis. A total of 1541 clones show significant induction, of which 37% have no hit or unknown function and the rest represent 661 genes with identified function. Similarly, out of 1452 clones showing significant reduction, only 53% of the clones have identified function and they represent 573 genes. The 661 induced genes are involved in 445 different molecular functions. About 90% of those functions were classified to 20 categories based on careful survey of the literature. Among other things, it appears that carbohydrate metabolism and mitochondrial function may be of central importance in the mechanism of dormancy release and studies in this direction are ongoing. Analysis of the reduced function is ongoing (Appendix A). A second set of hybridizations was carried out with RNA samples from buds exposed to short photoperiod, leading to induction of bud dormancy, and long photoperiod treatment, as control. Analysis indicated that 42 genes were significant difference between LD and SD and 11 of these were unique.
