.Abstract: The Spanish Transition (1975-1982) is a controversial historical period. In recent years, following the 15-M movement, we have witnessed in Spain a revival of voices critical of the official narrative. In the Valencian area there is a considerable corpus of novels that provide relevant information on the way how the memory of the Valencian Transition has been built. The distance existing between the present and the years in which the facts took place, as well as the ignorance of the new generations on the subject, allows us to consider these novels, in a broad sense, as historical novels, at the same level as those set in the Civil War and the post-war period. Keywords: historical novel, catalan literature, Spanish Transition, Valencia.

Abstract:
Abstract: The Valencian writer Víctor Labrado (Sueca, 1956) has emerged as one of the great contemporary references in the field of the non-fiction novel in Catalan, a narrative subgenre that combines the fictional intention with real testimonial speeches. However, can Labrado’s capital books –peculiar, idiosyncratic and unusual– be considered also, without subterfuges or hints, historical novels? Broadly speaking: are his Spanish civil war plots grafted with interviews, generous doses of documentary journalism and almost absolute absence of fiction, historical novels? Its techniques and style are no impediment to say so, if we pay attention to the topoi agreed by the specialized critic. In fact, these novels become, in short, a living testimony of our past time: they rescue from oblivion the experiences and adventures of anonymous people, from the most universal particularity, and the Valencian reality of a past century stigmatized by the civil conflict of 1936 and the consequent dictatorship. Is that enough, however, to attribute this label to the rest of his literary works? This paper analyses the techniques, the plots and the concepts of Labrado’s essential books to determine what part of his nonfiction novels may or may not be considered historical. Keywords: Víctor Labrado, nonfiction novel, historical novel, Catalan literature, Valencian

Abstract:
The Catalan children's author Josep Vallverdú published two crossover stories based on Robinson Crusoe and Treasure Island. Les raons de Divendres (Friday's Reasons) (2003) gives an account of the episode of Crusoe and Friday told from the point of view of the servant, whereas El testament de John Silver (John Silver's Will) (2007) deals with the adventures of the pirate after searching for the treasure in the Caribbean. This paper demonstrates how Vallverdú uses his experience as a writer and translator to transform two canonical novels, through transposition into a contemporary context, in a way that facilitates an interaction between Catalan literature and English literature. In keeping with this exploration of literary tradition, the two sequels are also analysed as twenty-first century expressions of a Western literary tradition that abounds in adventure stories set at sea.

The massive emigration of people from villages, towns, and small cities to the metropolis of Barcelona in the 1960s has constituted the primary motivation for my writing. In the fol1owing article, I reflect on the various meanings that movement to the Catalan capital has for the characters in three of my novels: Pedra de tartera, Càmfora, and Carrer Bolívia. The city becomes a home and a dream; it becomes a site of anonymity full of challenges and promises; it becomes, in short, a test of adaptation. There is no real return to the point of departure, only the transformation of the individual citizen and of the urban body.

Abstract:
Numerous authors of comics and graphic novels have used the economic crisis in the Iberian Peninsula as a narrative frame for social criticism. Prominent amongst them is the Catalan cartoonist Aleix Saló, who burst onto the comics scene with his animated YouTube video Españistán, a book trailer for his graphic novel Españistán: Este país se va a la mierda [Españistán: This country is going to hell] (2011). This article shows how Saló offers a humorous and didactic portrait of the devastating effects of the economic crisis: he does this through multimodality (using specific shapes, colours, fonts and components of orality) and through creating ‘multimodal extensions’, intertextual relations between published books and book trailers. This analysis presents a case study of the multimodal techniques that authors use to shape and develop their work in the context of the powerful relationship between text and image in the digital age.

Abstract:
This thesis examines one of the most unique novels of contemporary Catalan narrative, Fortuny (1983) by Pere Gimferrer. The aims of the present study are mainly two: to shed light on one of the most important, but least studied, works of Pere Gimferrer, examining the Catalan language facet of this bilingual (or multilingual)) narrator and prose writer; to analyze critical reception of the work and show how the novel has evolved from the time of publication in 1983 until today.

Abstract:
This dissertation is built on the basis that during the first decades of the twenty-first century, it has appeared a diverse corpus of Catalan prose-works characterized by a new representation of both the imaginary and the narrative of rural traditional landscape. Traditionally, the representation of rural landscape was enclosed with specific points of the territory and had idealized visions related to the values of origin and continuity. This dissertation points toward a new representation of the rurality. The critical analysis of seven narratives serves as the starting point to examine a new aesthetics of the rurality and the relationship that individuals build and stablish with it. Hence, this return to the rural place is geographical, literary and it implies a gesture of human and social reflection, as well as the constitution of a new rurality marked by the I-place, as called in this study, and the landscapes of restlessness

Abstract:
This study extracts the literary trends that emerge in the 21st century Catalan-language novel scene from an analysis of seven defining and characteristic axes of this narrative: the thematic relation with the identity crisis, the uncertainty and the lack of general sense; the expression of everyday life and immediate context through characters with attitudes and pathologies which are very close to contemporary individuals; the normalized inclusion of the fantastic in texts of realistic topic and setting by the genre of magical realism or neofantastic; the rise of the method of discursive fragmentation through various techniques that break with consistency, logic and uniformity; the increase in the use of metaliterary practice, that is to say, the narrative that refers to itself; the growing tendency to elaborate autofiction narratives, in which the author is partially introduced into the story, usually from the first narrative person, and the strong implementing of literary formalism, which becomes visible in works that put the form (the how) before the content (the what).

Abstract:
The Catalan language has long had to deal with the competing presence of Castilian on its own territory. Defenders of Catalan, writers in particular, have striven to preserve a written language that would be both viable and “authentic”, that is to say free from Castilian influences. However, their concern about authenticity clashes with the constraint of plausibility in certain genres, where the use of informal spoken language is either required or simply useful, just as informal spoken Catalan is being pervaded with more and more lexical or syntactic castilianisms. The purpose of this thesis is to explore, through several contemporary texts published from 1979 to 2005, how writers of crime fiction, playwrights and realist novelists have dealt with this contradiction – either working against it, around it, or with it

Abstract:
Given that the poetry of Blai Bonet has been thoroughly examined, this study is focused on Blai Bonet as a novelist beginning with the analysis of his first novel, El mar (1958). The study is divided into three parts: “Blai Bonet’s work and his figure in the postwar Catalan literary landscape”, where the literary context in which Blai Bonet begins to write and the importance of the appearance of a novel such as El mar in the narrative production of the 50s are examined. The second part, “The irruption of prose in Blai Bonet”, consists in a narrative and interpretative study of the novel, while in the third, “The exuberance of El mar”, relates the novel to the literary and philosophical currents of the second half of the 20th century. All in all, the objective of the study is to analyse the novel thoroughly to situate it within the Catalan, Spanish and European literary panorama of post-war period

Abstract:
The historical novel played a central role in the resurgence of the Catalan novel during the Renaixença, which occurred in two stages: the first was during the 1860s and saw little in the way of production, the second came during the 1870s when the resurgence started to gain a certain momentum. Whereas only three novels plus one unfinished work appeared in the 1860s, during the 1870s some 32 novels and novellas were published. With specific reference to the historical novel, two were published in the 1860s and fourteen in the 1870s. In terms of type, the most powerful influences on the first novel, L’orfeneta de Menargues by Antoni de Bofarull are clearly the classic historical novels of Walter Scott and Alessandro Manzoni. In contrast, from the 1870s the Catalan historical novel owes much more to the historical adventure fiction of Alexandre Dumas, and by the 1880s there is a move away from the melodramatic with the introduction of Barcelonan costumbrism and sentimentalism. If we group the novels according to historical period, we find there are two novels set in the medieval period, L’orfeneta de Menargues (1862) by Antoni de Bofarull, and Lo castell de Sabassona (1879) by Joaquim Salarich; two set during the War of the Spanish Succession, Lo coronel d'Anjou (1872) by Francesc Pelai Briz, and Vigatans i botiflers (1878) by Maria de Bell-lloch; one set in the 17th century, Lo rector de Vallfogona (1876) by Josep Feliu i Codina; one set during the War of the Pyrenees, Història d’un pagès (1869) by Joaquim Riera i Bertran; four set during the war of Independence, Les òrfenes de mare (1872) by Josep d'Argullol, Lo caragirat (1872) by Josep Martí i Folguera, Cor i sang (1880) by Antoni Careta i Vidal, and Lo Bruch (1880) by Josep Feliu i Codina; and two novels set during the Carlist Wars, L'any 35 (1874) by Frederic Soler (unfinished) and La guerra (1877) by Josep d'Argullol. Despite this diversity, we can still discern a series of common elements, such as history, customs and folklore, melodramatic literary conventionalism, and a patriotic spirit.

Abstract:
This dissertation analyses, through a rhetorical framework and a literary approach, texts written in Catalan and Castilian by four Catalan female writers (Dolors Monserdà, Maria Aurèlia Capmany, Esther Tusquets, Monserrat Roig ), whose works cover from 1900 to the 1980. Utilizing this urban feminine literature, it discusses the historical-geographical vision about the changes in Catalan society during the twentieth century with its consequences for the urban space, especially the space occupied by women. It is also established that Barcelona’s recovery and literary vindication by women has been done through the written text, as literary affirmation and as a matter of conscience in which the city could not be summed up as a backdrop, but rather as an active part of a literary creation, active in the double sense, as a socio-historical space in the novel and as characteristic of their works. The primary purpose of this dissertation is to demonstrate that the use of the city as a setting for the novels determines and characterizes those female writers’ texts. Consequently, these writings are literary material relevant and essential to the understanding of the Barcelonian women’s space. However their use of space is not arbitrary, on the contrary it corresponds to a social order established by the patriarchy where the relation of women to the world is embodied in the intentional and socially restricted space and movements of their bodies. The theoretical perspectives of this study are based on Montserrat Roig’s feminist urban space theories. Her theory advocates the right to individuality, denouncing the patriarchal and hierarchical social system present in gendered space from the outside male world to the domestic feminized space. I also turn to the writings of Maria Aurèlia Capmany, who addresses cultural aspects of women’s roles revealing a purposive controlled patriarchal society according to a historical-geographical analysis. This study of texts permits a new reading of the Catalan capital and demonstrates that Catalan women writers have consciously willed to give birth to a new history of the city: the history of women as protagonist citizens, producers, reproducers, and consumers of the space represented by the Catalan capital

Abstract:
In its beginnings, the French semiotic theory had as its major concern the issues of the intelligible, when Greimas proposed a generative path of meaning capable to comprise many systems of meaning. In the course of time, though, the analysts were defied by issues related to sensibility and affection, which claimed for a place in theory, through texts in which narrative was not central. Claude Zilberberg, in particular, is one of the authors who defends the primacy of the sensibility over intelligibility through the features of which came to be called tensive semiotics. Following this movement both through theory and literature, this dissertation chooses as its subject an experimental novel, Paulo Leminskis Catatau, almost considered an unintelligible work due to its non-linear narrative patterns. We aim to approach this novel through the tensive semiotics theory, proposing some ways for its reading based on the texts iterant strategies and procedures. As Zilberberg finds in Saussures syllabic model a rhythmic system which can be expanded to all semiotic domains, we can find in a novel like Catatau cells or elements which repeat in certain intervals, creating a rule, an orientation, a rhythm at least. In Catatau, this rhythm seems much more to disorganize than to organize the language. It means that its the rhythmic cell interchange that leads the reader to that effect of unintelligibility. Of course that there are more features that reinforce this effect within the novel, as we show along our work. That means that we see Leminskis novel less as a diluted narrative and more as the offspring of some experience only made possible if built upon some persons sensibility, affected by his/her surroundings. On this specific approach we find our means to make explicit the building of the text meaning, which is considered the semiotic theory main goal.

Abstract:
Catatau was written between 1966 and 1975, a period when Brazil was under a hideous military dictatorship. In the same period, the Brazilian culture lived one of its richest and most intense moments, producing manifestations as Tropicália, Cinema Novo, Teatro Oficina, Cinema Marginal etc. Our work aims to demonstrate how Catatau is situated in that historical context and especially how it produces a political critique of the authoritarian regime. Due its critical position on the authoritarian power, we believe Catatau may be considered a \"novel of protest\" and not just an experimental or avant-garde work, as usually Catatau is considered. However, unlike the other \"novels of protest\" written during the period called \"post-64\", Catatau is characterized by its baroque language and its affiliation with the long tradition of carnivalized literature. The theoretical support for the analysis of the baroque is mainly the work of Severo Sarduy. And to the analysis of carnivalization we adopted especially the concepts of Mikhail Bakhtin presented in the books Problems of Dostoevsky\'s poetics and François Rabelais and Popular culture in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and also the important work of Enylton de Sá Rego, O calundu e a panaceia, in which the author studies the relationships between Machado de Assis\'s work and the menippean satire.

Abstract:
AbstractThe ‘Hack the School’ project provides school communities a guided experience to support the transformation of their learning spaces. The aim is to foster change through a comprehensive and co-creative approach facilitating the transition from traditional uses of space to innovative ones with the concept of wellbeing as primary agency. A conceptual framework based on seven principles—welcome, belonging, communication, cooperation, diversity, movement and transduction—and an applied creative toolkit equip the process and provide a unique and novel perspective to the topic of innovative learning environments. Thus, the project channels the emerging needs regarding educational spaces challenging the current regulations that the public administration applies in Spain and initiates a dialogical collaboration between the field of education and architecture. The challenge open to all schools and funded by the Jaume Bofill Foundation received over 170 proposals in the Catalan context, where 30 schools were selected and are now becoming effective ‘hackers’.

Abstract:
The 20th century is definitely the consolidation of Catalan literary movements in which Catalan identity plays a fundamental role. Modernism and avant-garde movements prompted a renewal of literary genres. The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) was a point of conflict that led to the exile of most writers in Catalan. However, they continued publishing their works in Catalan. That´s the case of La Plaça del Diamant by Mercé Rodoreda and Cròniques de la veritat oculta by Pere Calders. That process of exile came to an end between 1962 to 1975 (death of Franco). Terenci Moix, Montserrat Roig, and others belonged to a generation called “generació literària dels setanta.” Most of them were born in Spanish postwar, educated in Francoism, concerned to recover the Catalan national identity, democratic politics, and social liberation of women and gay people.

Abstract:
Nowadays, video lectures are a very popular way to transmit knowledge, and because of that, there are many repositories with a large catalog of those videos on web. Despite all benefits that this high availability of video lectures brings, some problems also emerge from this scenario. One of these problems is that, it is very difficult find relevant content associate with those videos. Many times, students must to watch the entire video lecture to find the point of interest and, sometimes, these points are not found. For that reason, the proposal of this master’s project is to investigate and propose a novel framework based on early fusion of low and high-level audio features enriched with external knowledge from open databases for automatic topic segmentation in video lectures. We have performed preliminary experiments in two sets of video lectures using the current state of our work. The obtained results were very satisfactory, which evidences the potential of our proposal.

Abstract:
Wall Shear Stress (WSS) has been identified as an important factor in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. We developed a novel murine aortic coarctation model to alter the hemodynamic environment in vivo. The model utilizes the shape memory response of nitinol clips to provide a high degree of control over aortic diameter and subsequently WSS. We employed this model to test the hypothesis that acute changes in WSS in vivo induce upregulation of inflammatory proteins mediated by Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). WSS was mapped through a computational fluid dynamic model and correlated to inflammatory marker expression. C57B16 control mice were compared to tempol treated, apocynin treated, p47phox KO, and catalase overexpressor mice in this study. The results show that the coarctation produces low mean oscillatory WSS in the region downstream of the clip. The WSS in this region correlates to a large increase in VCAM-1 expression in wild-type mice. This WSS dependent increase in protein expression is unchanged in animal models of decreased ROS. This suggests that although the redox state is important to the overall pathogenesis of the disease, individual ROS or ROS sources may not be sufficient to inhibit a WSS dependent inflammatory response. Further analysis with this model utilizing other reagent treatments, transgenic mice, and markers will allow us to analyze the functional contribution of transcription factors, ROS, and ROS sources to WSS dependent inflammatory protein expression.

Abstract:
Rock typing is one of the most important steps in reservoir modeling, and it’s the main task in reservoir characterization. In carbonate, the rock typing work that’s been performed during the last two decades had a little progress in term of providing reliable estimation of reservoir behavior. However, the development of Conjunction Rock Properties Convergence, CROPC, a carbonate rock typing concept that provided an important and easy solution to the carbonate rock typing gaps, has a major breakthrough, even though, CROPC methodology was developed to capture the single pore network through the conjunction of Lithology, permeability, capillary pressure and water saturation. Therefore, the need to identify more complex carbonate pore network had led to the initiation of developing the Carbonate Rock Type Matrix RocMat, which will be detailed in this paper, as part of a Master of Science research project. In this novel concept the carbonate rocks were classified into homogeneous, single pore network, and heterogeneous rocks, dual and triple pore network with the utilization of the effective petrophysical properties of permeability, capillary pressure, saturation, porosity and height above free water level, all were classified in a conjunction matrix that honors these properties and at the same time enables generating sub groups as down scaling and estimation for unseen groups with infinite rock complexity capturing, at the same time it enables the ease to lump the groups and generates upscale-groups that make it easier for utilization by the geologist and reservoir engineers to achieve the objective of better reservoir performance prediction, the work was performed and then tested in two carbonate offshore fields data. This RocMat was structured to be the ultimate catalog for carbonate rock types.

Abstract:
Abstract Ultrasonic and sonic logs are increasingly used to evaluate the quality of cement placement in the annulus behind the pipe and its potential to perform as a barrier. Wireline logs are carried out in widely varying conditions and attempt to evaluate a variety of cement formulations in the annulus. The annulus geometry is complex due to pipe standoff and often affects the behavior (properties) of the cement. The transformation of ultrasonic data to meaningful cement evaluation is also a complex task and requires expertise to ensure the processing is correctly carried out as well interpreted correctly. Cement formulations can vary from heavy weight cement to ultralight foamed cements. The ultrasonic log-based evaluation, using legacy practices, works well for cements that are well behaved and well bonded to casing. In such cases, a lightweight cement and heavyweight cement, when bonded, can be easily discriminated from gas or liquid (mud) through simple quantitative thresholds resulting in a Solid(S) - Liquid(L) - Gas(G) map. However, ultralight and foamed cements may overlap with mud in quantitative terms. Cements may debond from casing with a gap (that is either wet or dry), resulting in a very complex log response that may not be amenable to simple threshold-based discrimination of S-L-G. Cement sheath evaluation and the inference of the cement sheath to serve as a barrier is complex. It is therefore imperative that adequate processes mitigate errors in processing and interpretation and bring in reliability and consistency. Processing inconsistencies are caused when we are unable to correctly characterize the borehole properties either due to suboptimal measurements or assumptions of the borehole environment. Experts can and do recognize inconsistencies in processing and can advise appropriate resolution to ensure correct processing. The same decision-making criteria that experts follow can be implemented through autonomous workflows. The ability for software to autocorrect is not only possible but significantly enables the reliability of the product for wellsite decisions. In complex situations of debonded cements and ultralight cements, we may need to approach the interpretation from a data behavior-based approach, which can be explained by physics and modeling or through observations in the field by experts. This leads a novel seven-class annulus characterization [5S-L-G] which we expect will bring improved clarity on the annulus behavior. We explain the rationale for such an approach by providing a catalog of log response for the seven classes. In addition, we introduce the ability to carry out such analysis autonomously though machine learning. Such machine learning algorithms are best carried out after ensuring the data is correctly processed. We demonstrate the capability through a few field examples. The ability to emulate an "expert" through software can lead to an ability to autonomously correct processing inconsistencies prior to an autonomous interpretation, thereby significantly enhancing the reliability and consistency of cement evaluation, ruling out issues related to subjectivity, training, and competency.

Abstract:
The reduction of CO2 concentration in our atmosphere consists in a big challenge for researchers, who are trying to explore novel technologies in order to transform CO2 into high added-value products. CO2 conversion into methane using microwave plasma (MWP) manifests as a very promising solution due to the ease of transport of methane and its storage. Microwave plasma represents a source of high-energy electrons, active ions and radicals that enhance or enable chemical reaction. It can be supplied by electricity generated from renewable resources. Then, MWP does not require any electrode to be generated and thus, the cost of those electrodes and of maintenance is reduced compared to glow discharge or DBD plasmas. MWP also can be generated over wide range of pressure (between 10 mbar-1bar). In addition, in the case of MWP, more electrons and active species are produced in comparison with other type of plasma[1–4]. MWP is a very suitable medium for this chemical reaction and leads to an efficient dissociation of CO2. The catalytic reduction of CO2 with H2 using MWP has been investigated in this work and the synergetic effects between the plasma and several catalysts were studied. First, the reaction was carried out without any catalysts and the effect of CO2/H2 ratio, total flow rate and input energy were evaluated. Then, a microwave generated plasma process was coupled with several Nickel catalysts that we prepared and characterized [5] in order to lead the reaction into methane formation. Multiple configurations were studied by changing the position of the catalyst bed. Obtained results were compared with conventional catalytic tests made with the same catalysts. It was found that the conversion of CO2 and energy efficiency increased using plasma assisted catalytic methanation of CO2 in comparison with conventional process. Operating conditions were studied in order to optimize methane production and energy efficiency of Plasma-catalytic process. References Qin, Y., G. Niu, X. Wang, D. Luo, Y. Duan, J.
