In Catalan dialectology, the presence of the central vowel schwa is considered a key feature that distinguishes Eastern Catalan from the Western Catalan. The article deals with the question to what extent Western Catalan's Lleida dialect, under the influence of Barcelona's Eastern Catalan prestige variety, nevertheless begins to integrate this sound, which is actually foreign there. The analysis is based on empirical material obtained from television broadcasts by local Lleida TV. Here, the relevant vowel phonemes are examined phonetically for their formant frequencies.

The study of linguistic transfer—understood here in terms of the copying of previous linguistic representations—seeks to reveal how domain-relevant prior language knowledge impacts the acquisition and development of new mental representations more generally. Studying sequential multilingualism offers a natural laboratory to observe cognitive-economical mechanisms that avoid redundancy in language learning. One of the key dividing questions between theories of transfer in sequential multilingualism is the extent of transfer, that is, whether a whole previous grammar is transferred (full transfe

An important question in trait theory is how many major traits are necessary to describe personality and exactly what traits these are. Several investigators have made attempts to answer these questions with solutions of 3, 5, and even 16 primary factors. The Zuckerman-Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire (ZKPQ) is a questionnaire aimed at the evaluation of a five-factor model, which emerged from factor analyses of scales and items. The results were five basic factors, similar in men and women: Neuroticism-Anxiety, Activity, Sociability, Impulsive Sensation-Seeking, and Aggression-Hostility. This

També analitza les observacions i percepcions lingüístiques d’aquests sobre la llengua catalana i sobre l’ús que en fan els habitants d’aquests territoris. En relació amb el segon objectiu, ens interessa saber si reconeixien que la llengua que parlaven els valencians és la mateixa que la dels catalans, mallorquins i altres veïns de la catalanofonia; quina posició ocupa la llengua catalana entre la resta de llengües

In Catalonia, ultrasonographic control of pregnancies is carried out in hospitals and in certain primary care centers within the women's care program. There is no scientific evidence on its efficacy in the improvement of the fetal viability at this level of care; therefore, the question of whether obstetric ultrasonography is efficacious and safe in primary care cannot be answered properly to recommend its application. However, it may be assessed whether routine ultrasonography, the one expected to be carried away in primary care centers, is more effective than selective ultrasonography, i.e.,

In the last ten years, Catalan stages have experienced a new presence of text theater. A whole ‘generation’ of new local playwrights has been established, and the importance and prestige of theater in public life in Catalonia has grown significantly. These developments raise the question of how the problems and conflicts of the surrounding society are reflected in contemporary theater. The article proposes an analysis of Narcís Comadira's L'hora dels adéus as a work of social commitment especially critical of the officially propagated models of Catalan identity, which formulates a vision of cu

The focus is placed not only on the demography and the linguistic situation but primarily on the linguistic politics and the language legislation of this territory. The Balearic Islands have the same political autonomy as the other Autonomous Communities of Spain which, however, use it far less than the other communities. The development of stem-final /g/ in several parts of Catalan verb paradigms via sound change and analogy has created suppletion in a large number of verbs. In this paper I present evidence against viewing these developments as teleological or driven by factors of markedness or naturalness. I also argue that appeal to morphomes must be tempered by the recognition of the highly variable nature of the patterns displayed by the verbs in question and contextualized in mechanisms that do not merely model change but explain how speakers create change.

Determining the linguistic nature of light verbs – whether they are lexical or grammatical units – is still an open question. Light verbs are often characterised as delexicalized. Thus, grammaticalization would be the process by which a lexical verb (lexical unit) assumes the value of a light verb (grammatical unit). However, it has also been argued that light verbs are just regular verbs, albeit ones with little semantic specification. If they are, there can be no grammaticalization, at least in principle. Nevertheless, even if light verbs are considered lexical verbs, the way they evolve inv
