In Catalan dialectology, the presence of the central vowel schwa is considered a key feature that distinguishes Eastern Catalan from the Western Catalan. The article deals with the question to what extent Western Catalan's Lleida dialect, under the influence of Barcelona's Eastern Catalan prestige variety, nevertheless begins to integrate this sound, which is actually foreign there. The paper presents the special characteristics of the Catalan past perfect tense. In the majority of languages, and, more specifically, in neo-latin languages, similar structures, containing verbs of movement tend to modify into future tense. As opposed to this, the structure“anar + infinitive” stands for past perfect in modern Catalan. The development of stem-final /g/ in several parts of Catalan verb paradigms via sound change and analogy has created suppletion in a large number of verbs. In this paper I present evidence against viewing these developments as teleological or driven by factors of markedness or naturalness.
