Abstract:

Abstract:
The ability of two tomato cultivars, Lycopersicon esculentum cv. VFNTCherry (chill sensitive) and L. esculentum × L. pimpinellifollim cv. New York 280 (chill tolerant) to acclimate to low temperature storage at 2 °C were compared following prior temperature preconditioning. The activities of catalase, peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase and electrolyte leakage were monitored during a 15-day preconditioning period. Low temperature preconditioning reduced membrane damage in both fruit. In contrast, high temperature preconditioning accelerated the rate of leakage in VFNT, while fruit of NY 280 remained relatively undamaged. Low temperature preconditioning stimulated a 4-fold increase in catalase and peroxidase activities in fruit of NY280. High-temperature preconditioning appeared only to benefit fruit of NY280. Regardless of pretreatment, no significant change in superoxide dismutase activities were observed for either cultivar. These findings suggest that the ability to acclimate to low temperature stress may correlate with increased levels of catalase and peroxidase.

Abstract:
The present article reports on the findings of a case study of bilingual first language acquisition in Catalan and English. It first presents a general overview of a child's syntactic development from the age of 1;3 to 4;2 and then focuses on the question of subject realization in the two contrasting languages he is acquiring simultaneously. In this case, Catalan is a null subject language in opposition to the overt subject properties of English. Such data allow us to provide evidence on a key issue in bilingual acquisition research: the question of language separation in the early stages of acquisition. The data available suggest the absence of any major influence of one language on the other. In other words, our subject seems to be acquiring word order patterns which are different in the two adult systems in a language-dependent manner from the beginning of his production in both languages.

Abstract:
This thesis results from the first comprehensive investigation into children’s acquisition of actional passives in two varieties of Catalan: Central Catalan and Majorcan Catalan. The acquisition of passives by children has proved to be delayed in a number of languages, especially those which do not have s-homophones between an adjectival passive and a verbal passive. Firstly, a study of spontaneous production in children and adults was made to see the frequency of the different kinds of passives (periphrastic, adjectival and pronominal) for both groups. Using a sentence-picture matching task I undertook a first experiment to see if there was delay in the acquisition of actional passives in Catalan. Also, and because the by-phrase in Majorcan Catalan has the same preposition as agentive nominals, a second experiment was run to see the possible facilitation of having the same preposition in the comprehension of long passive constructions; no effect of the preposition was found. Lastly, a third experiment was run to check the comprehension of adjectival passives versus short passives; verbal passives were shown to be interpreted as adjectival until the age of 7.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis exploits quasi-natural experiments, both historical and contemporary, to provide causal evidence on broad questions at the frontier of the development and political economy literature. In particular, it delves into the long-run effects of emigration, the formation of identities and political preferences, and the long-term impacts of school segregation. The first chapter examines the consequences of emigration for human capital accumulation at origin, taking as a laboratory the Galician diaspora formed at the beginning of the XXth century. Leveraging data spanning over one hundred years, it provides the first evidence of a positive impact of emigration in the communities of origin across several generations. The second chapter investigates whether the emotional trigger of sports can influence identity and political preferences. Focusing on Catalonia and Football Club Barcelona (FCB) as an ideal setting, I show empirically that FCB performance is directly linked with feelings of Catalan identity and support for secession. Furthermore, I explore the mechanisms behind this connection and its potential implications for electoral results. The third chapter takes advantage of a major reform under the Pinochet’s dictatorship, which introduced a system of school vouchers, to analyze the long-term effects of school segregation on subjective well-being. The findings show that the reform had unintended consequences, hurting children from poorer family backgrounds who today, more than 30 years later, have significantly lower levels of life satisfaction
