Abstract:

The Mancomunitat represents the first experience of self-government in Catalonia in the 20th century. This idea began to form among Catalan intellectuals in the second half of the 19th century, when the interests of the local bourgeoisie and the cultural elite of the region unexpectedly coincided in connection with the need to defend their interests before the central authorities. The Mancomunitat emerged at a time when the political system of the restoration was in crisis as the main monarchist parties were ousted from the political life of the region by Catalanists and Republicans. In these conditions, the Spanish government preferred to satisfy the demands of the nationalists, since they were a more conservative force and did not pretend to change the political system of Spain. As a result, the Catalan provinces were able to create the Mancomunitat, which allowed them to coordinate efforts to deal with administrative issues.

Resum: Enmig d’un panorama periodístic escrit exclusivament en castellà, sorgeix el primer rotatiu escrit íntegrament en català a Tortosa: La Veu de Tortosa. El succeeix La Veu de la Comarca en la voluntat de «desvetllar la consciència catalanista de la comarca tortosina». Tots dos rotatius representen la introducció del regionalisme a les terres de l’Ebre i del catalanisme conservador, en una ciutat on predominaren els partits dinàstics espanyols durant la primera dècada del segle xx. Després del silenci de la dictadura primorriverista, apareix un setmanari homònim del de principis de segle com a plataforma de difusió d’un partit comarcal afí al de la Lliga Regionalista. En contrapartida, la revista Vida Tortosina, primer, i el quinzenari Acció, després, esdevenen els òrgans d’expressió d’Acció Catalana i representen un moderat nacionalisme d’esquerres. Regionalistes i nacionalistes pretenien fer front a la força política majoritària a Tortosa amb l’establiment de la ii República, els republicans marcel·linistes. Paraules clau: terres de l’Ebre, premsa comarcal, catalanisme, actituds lingüístiques Abstract: In the middle of a journalistic circuit written exclusively in Spanish, comes the first newspaper written entirely in Catalan in the city of Tortosa: La Veu de Tortosa. This one is followed by La Veu de la Comarca which has the firm intention of «awake the Catalan consciousness of the district of Tortosa». Both newspapers represent the introduction of regionalism in Terres de l’ Ebre and the Catalan language in a zone dominated throughout the first decade of the twentieth century by Spanish dynastic parties. After the silence of the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera appears a homonymous weekly as a diffusion platform of a district party related to the Lliga Regionalista. In counterpart, the magazine Vida Tortosina first, and the biweekly Acció after, become organs of expression of Acció Catalana and represent a moderate progressive nationalism. Regionalists and nationalists tried to fight the greatest political force in Tortosa with the establishment of the II Republic, the «marcel·linistes» Republicans. Ramon d’Abadal i de Vinyals was a singular historian in the Catalan 20th century. With solid legal and institutional training, he was a big rural owner that developed his essential works on the national origins of Catalonia and its relationship with Spain, outside the academic realm. Abstract:

AbstractThe Corrida de tores, as an important component of Spanish culture, has also been the subject of a dispute between the aficionados (supporters of the corrida) and the antitaurinos (opponents of the corrida) for centuries. Naturally, the spectacle has become an object of interest for researchers not only in the socio-cultural context, where it is becoming a spectacle full of artistry, accompanied by great emotions, or a tradition in some aspects resembling the Fiesta Nacional, but also becoming increasingly important on the political, moral and ethical level. The latter is related to the issue of animal protection and their humane treatment, while in the political dimension the links between the taurammatic tradition and the actions of political decision-makers are mainly analysed. Importantly, in the Catalan and Spanish public spaces, the corrida has become a national sporting role, with similar links to politics. In the light of the Catalan-Spanish antagonisms, this perspective is gaining particular importance, as evidenced, for example, by the flashback of football competition (Real Madrid FC vs. FC Barcelona) in the country under Francisco Franco’s regime, where sporting competition became an exemplary political game.The aim of the article is to analyze the dispute between politicians in Madrid and Catalanists and independents in the region in the context of the banning of the de toros corrida in Catalonia in 2010 and the reaction of the centre’s decision making centre to these actions. Moreover, the motives for this ban are sought, whether they are of an autotelic nature - in this case, the protection of animal rights -or whether they show the traits of instrumental use of tradition, de facto considered to be a “foreign”, because Spanish, part of the rhetoric and real policy pursued by Catalan nationalists and independents in the era of radicalisation of the independence movement in Catalonia.

La colectividad catalana de Buenos Aires se caracterizó por su heterogeneidad. Los «catalanes de América» porteños se destacaron por su compromiso cultural y político catalanista, que difundían a través del periodismo. Analizaremos el pensamiento de la docente, periodista, folclorista y poeta catalanista Gràcia Bassa de Llorens en las «Glosses Femenines» que publicó entre 1917 y 1925 en la revista Ressorgiment de Buenos Aires para indagar en la manera en que fomentaron el compromiso político femenino y difundieron el imaginario catalanista entre la colectividad catalana de América.

Abstract:

Dejando a un lado el ingente número de catalanismos presentes en la traducción al castellano del De re rustica de Palladio, atribuida a Ferrer Saiol, en el presente trabajo se analizan algunos de los también muchos aragonesismos que la pueblan. En concreto, se presenta un estudio sistemático de once de ellos: conrear, empeltar, borrò ~ borrons, senalla, lambrusca, brocada, entrecavar, palafangar, pámpano, espleyto y espleytar. Algunas son formas que el catalán compartía con el aragonés, pero no con el castellano, donde tampoco tuvieron un amplio recorrido. No obstante, la importancia del aragonés no hemos de medirla solo por los aragonesismos que se introdujeron en castellano, sino también por el hecho previo de que no dudaran los traductores en servirse de ellos, a sabiendas, incluso, de que muchos no iban a pervivir. Es la prueba de una actitud abierta hacia las lenguas de la Corona de Aragón. Leaving aside the huge numbre of catalanisms present in the Spanish translation of Palladio’s De re rustica, atributed to Ferrer Saiol, in this paper some of the many aragonesisms that populate it are also analyzed. Specifically, a systematic study of eleven of them is presented: conrear, empeltar, borrò ~ borrons, senalla, lambrusca, brocada, entrecavar, palafangar, pámpano, espleyto and espleytar. Some are forms that Catalan shared with Aragonese, but not with Castilian, where they did not have a long life either. However, the importance of Aragonese should not be measured only by the aragonesisms that were introduced into Spanish, but also by the fact that the translators did not hesitate to use them, even knowing that many were not going to survive. It is proof of an open attitude towards the languages of the Crown of Aragon.

Abstract:

Este trabajo estudia la influencia de la Primera Guerra Mundial en la evolución del catalanismo radical en América durante las primeras décadas del siglo XX. Centra el análisis en los «catalanes de América» porteños, el sector del colectivo catalán que desde la capital argentina contribuyó a diseñar las características principales del separatismo radical de ultramar. Profundiza en su etapa más activa durante el siglo XX, integrándola al cisma que la guerra produjo en la civilización occidental y a las nuevas corrientes de pensamiento que aparecieron en el campo teórico europeo. Indaga también en la posición del grupo hacia el conflicto armado. Finalmente, estudia la impronta de la Gran Guerra en el proceso de construcción y reproducción de la cosmovisión y del activismo del catalanismo porteño.

Para reforzar esta vinculación con Cataluña, el Comissariat de Propaganda de la Generalitat de Catalunya editó en Barcelona el Butlletí Especial per als Catalans Absents de la Pàtria. Realizaremos el primer estudio específico de esta fuente primaria enmarcándola en el contexto de las publicaciones del Comissariat y efectuaremos un análisis de sus aspectos formales. También analizaremos las causas históricas de su aparición, para integrar su existencia al estudio del catalanismo americano durante la Guerra Civil Española. Abstract:

The article explores the transformations of Spanish and Catalan national identities and the growth of the pro-independence movement in Catalonia following the 2008 global recession. It argues that the Great Recession provided a new historical context of hot nationalism in which Catalanist narratives of loss and resistance began to ring true to large sectors of Catalan society, whereas the Spanish constitutionalist narratives seemed increasingly outdated. The article also shows the limits of the process of mass nationalization by both the Catalan and the Spanish governments and the eventual ‘crystallization’ of an identity and political divide between pro and anti-independence supporters which split Catalan society down the middle and led to a sort of national identity deadlock.

Abstract:

Abstract: During the last years of the Spanish fascist regime, two politically contrary music scenes emerged in Barcelona. While Catalanist folk music emerged for political freedom, Spanished rock’n’roll, punk, and heavy scenes emerged in the working-class suburbs of Barcelona, denouncing bad conditions of everyday urban life. The great success of this last music scene in Barcelona in the 1980s led to the then nationalist, conservative government of Catalonia to promote a new socially and politically sanitized music scene in response to such class-based contestation. This study aims to explore how a new Catalan(ist) pop-rock scene was created to socially and culturally sanitize the working-class suburbs of Barcelona along the decades of the 1980s and 1990s.

Este artículo se aproxima al desconocido campo de la recepción de la Antigüedad en el pensamiento anarquista mediante el análisis de un texto específico: un artículo de 1926 sobre la ciudad de Ampurias escrito por Federica Montseny en La Revista Blanca, una autora y una publicación emblemáticas del periodo de auge de la ideología libertaria en España. Se comentan y contextualizan varias facetas del texto: el legado literario que incidió sobre su evocación poética de las ruinas, la proyección de la información histórica y arqueológica derivada de las excavaciones coetáneas, su idealización filohelenista vinculada al refuerzo identitario catalanista y el mensaje anticristiano que transmite al confrontar las distintas etapas del enclave. Se sondean así algunos temas, conexiones y particularidades en la compleja relación entre anarquismo y mundo antiguo.

La reciente publicación de las Memorias de Francisco Cambó (1876–1936) en Alianza Editorial y una nueva biografía escrita por Ignacio Buqueras en Plaza y Janés, en su colección de Biografías y Memorias, ha reactualizado la figura de uno de los principales protagonistas de la vida política y económica española del primer tercio del siglo XX.Desde el punto de vista de la historia política, las Memorias constituyen lectura obligada, en particular en lo que se refiere a la explicación de la forma en la que el nacionalismo moderado catalán, el catalanismo, supo convertirse en una poderosa y constructiva palanca de gobierno y de canalización del sentimiento nacionalista.

Abstract:

ABSTRACTThis sociolinguistic investigation analyzes an innovative usage of Spanish motion verbs, demonstratives, and locatives in Barcelona that involves crosslinguistic pragmatic transfer. Speakers in the two social networks examined (N = 58) use these Spanish deictics following pragmatic rules that generally correspond to the rules for their Catalan counterparts. Quantitative analysis demonstrates that this innovative usage of the Spanish deictics is not predictable from the lexical form of the deictic systems in both languages. Multiple regression analysis (SPSS) demonstrates that as relative exposure to Catalan increases so does the amount of innovative usage observed, although degree of integration into a Catalan social network and degree of Catalanist ideology do not affect such usage. Qualitatively, this innovative usage is a linguistic marker of a unique contact variety of Spanish spoken in Catalonia (i.e., Catalan Spanish). In this variety, such usage represents a potential resource for performing Catalan identity.

La gran implantación de los espectáculos taurinos en Barcelona, donde llegaron a existir simultáneamente tres plazas de toros, obligó a la prensa local a posicionarse sobre la llamada “fiesta nacional”. Por lo general, los diarios en castellano publicaban regularmente crónicas taurinas, aunque también hubo excepciones como la de “La Vanguardia” entre los años 1900 y 1939. Por su parte la prensa en catalán, adscrita al catalanismo político, se abstuvo de informar sobre los festejos que se celebraban en Barcelona, salvo para criticar la tauromaquia, aspecto en el que destacó algún semanario satírico. A pesar de la simbiosis existente entre el antitaurinismo y el nacionalismo catalán, el autor concluye que la línea editorial de la prensa ante las corridas de toros obedecía a cuestiones identitarias

Abstract:

In the summer of 1936, with the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, the Catalan Church underwent a ferocious assault, without precedent in modern European history. Catalan society in the early decades of the twentieth century had been divided over its relationship to the Catholic Church, with some sectors being profoundly anti-clerical. Yet by the early 1960s, attitudes towards the Catholic Church had changed. This article is concerned with reconstructing Catalan and Catalanist Catholicism from one of profound crisis during the Civil War to its re-emergence from the confines of Spanish National Catholicism. Francoist victory in the Spanish Civil War meant the ending of indigenous Catholic traditions. However, from the mid-1940s we can trace the slow reconstruction of Catalan traditions, language and culture. All of the major expressions of Catalan identity until the 1960s were enabled due to this Catholic patronage. Whilst the Church was unable to reverse secularization trends, this involvement in cultural activity would transform its place within wider Catalan society. By the end of the period examined in this article, historic and deep rooted anti-clericalism in Catalonia was ending.

L’anàlisi de les línies d’acció i de les prioritats polítiques de la Generalitat de Catalunya a través de l’estudi de les seves finances ens aporta una imatge més clara del seu paper en el primer exili francès. Les dificultats per aconseguir recursos, causades per la permanent incapacitat d’arribar a un acord de finançament amb el Govern espanyol a l’exili, van fer que les polítiques de suport a les institucions, a la cultura i a l’assistència als refugiats catalans de base es despleguessin amb resultats minsos a curt termini i mediocres a mitjà termini. El suport de la Generalitat a la concentració física dels principals polítics i intel·lectuals catalans va ser prioritari i on va esmerçar els seus millors recursos, especialment a la residència de Montpeller. La dependència econòmica de la Generalitat respecte a les institucions republicanes a l’exili va afeblir la figura del president Companys, va contribuir amb força al seu aïllament i va facilitar, finalment, la dispersió dels exponents del catalanisme polític.

Este artículo es una aproximación a la trayectoria de Fernando Soldevilla Ruiz (1854-1931) escritor relativamente prolífico y periodista respetado, con una larga trayectoria en diarios de la relevancia de El Imparcial o La Correspondencia de España. De orígenes humildes fue un dirigente del liberalismo español. Ejerció de gobernador civil, siendo elegido por dos veces diputado a Cortes. En 1913, con cincuenta y nueve años, fue nombrado jefe de la Inspección Mercantil y de Seguros, detentando este cargo hasta su jubilación en 1929. Se caracterizó por ser un acérrimo defensor de una España políticamente centralizada y culturalmente uniformizada, sosteniendo un discurso de un marcado nacionalismo español. Su retórica españolista se tradujo en sus sistemáticas críticas hacia el catalanismo y el nacionalismo vasco, movimiento que identificaba como bizcaitarra. Soldevilla era conocido por ser el autor de El Año político, el más influyente dosier de prensa de carácter anual, publicado de forma ininterrumpida durante las primeras décadas del siglo XX.

Abstract:

En el artículo se analizan las opiniones de las dos principales publicaciones catalanas de Buenos Aires, las revistas Ressorgiment y Catalunya, respecto del desarrollo de la Guerra Civil española (1936-1939). También se consideran los vínculos entre estos medios de prensa y las instituciones de la comunidad catalana de la ciudad y el rol desempeñado por los primeros exiliados que llegaron al país como consecuencia de la guerra. Ambas revistas reflejaron la influencia del catalanismo en la región del Río de la Plata durante la primera mitad del siglo XX y defendieron enérgicamente los derechos históricos de Cataluña frente al avance del franquismo. Pero mientras Ressorgiment asumió como propias las posturas en favor de la secesión respecto de España y observó la guerra principalmente como un conflicto externo, Catalunya combinó una firme oposición a la rebelión militar con la apertura hacia la cooperación con la Segunda República española en la lucha antifascista. Esta diferencia habría de reflejarse también en la mayor presencia de los exiliados en la segunda revista, tanto durante la guerra como en la inmediata posguerra.
