Abstract:
Purpose – The purposes of this paper are to investigate the effects of integrated advertising formats on the persuasion of children, children’s awareness of the persuasive intent of these formats and how this awareness mediates the level of persuasion. Design/methodology/approach – An one-factor between-subjects experiment was conducted among 117 boys from 8 to 12 years old. Findings – This study showed that boys were more aware of the persuasive intent of a non-integrated catalog than of a brand-integrated magazine. In addition, higher awareness of the persuasive intent of the catalog enhanced persuasion in boys. Research limitations/implications – This study only focused on boys’ responses and not on girls. Practical implications – Findings imply that advertisers could focus on non-integrated print advertising formats, such as catalogs, to promote positive product attitudes among boys. Catalogs are also a more ethical way of communicating to boys because boys are generally aware of catalogs’ persuasive intent. Social implications – This study implies that even if children have sufficient persuasion knowledge, they do not necessarily use it to critically evaluate advertising. Originality/value – This paper is the first to systematically test the differences in effects of brand-integrated magazines versus catalogs targeted toward children. Importantly, it shows that persuasion knowledge plays a fundamentally different role in the persuasion process of children than of adults: awareness of the persuasive intent of catalogs increases persuasion among boys, whereas previous studies among adults showed opposite results.

So far, no complete catalogs of observations of Neptunian satellites are available. Aims. We aim to provide new, precise positions, and to compile a catalog including all available ground-based astrometric observations of Neptunian satellites. The observations are tabulated in a single and consistent format and given in the same timescale, the Terrestrial Time (TT), and reference system, the International Celestial Reference System (ICRS), including necessary changes and corrections. Methods. New CCD observations of Triton and Nereid were made at Lijiang 2.4-m and Yaoan 0.8-m telescopes in 2013–2019, and then reduced based on Gaia-DR2. Furthermore, a catalog called OCNS2019 (Observational Catalog of Neptunian Satellites (2019 version)) was compiled, after recognizing and correcting errors and omissions. Furthermore, in addition to what was considered for the COSS08 catalog for eight main Saturnian satellites, all observed absolute and relative coordinates were converted to the ICRS with corrections for star catalog biases with respect to Gaia-DR2. New debiasing tables for both the modern and old star catalogs, which were previously not provided based on Gaia-DR2, are developed and applied. Treatment of missing positions of comparison bodies in conversions of observed relative coordinates are proposed. Results. OCNS2019 and the new debiasing tables are publicly available online. OCNS2019 includes 24996 observed coordinates of 11 Neptunian satellites obtained over 3741 nights from 1847 to 2019. All observations are given in TT and ICRS. The star catalog biases are removed, which are significant for Nereid and outer satellites. We obtained 880 (5% of total now available) new coordinates for Triton over 41 nights (1% of total observation nights so far), and 790 (14%) for Nereid over 47 nights (10%). The dispersions of these new positions are about 0.″03 for Triton and 0.″06 for Nereid. Conclusions. OCNS2019 should be useful in improving ephemerides for the above-mentioned objects.

AbstractSince the establishment of the Hipparcos Catalog as the defining source of the optical reference frame, densification beyond its ≈ 120,000 stars has been made possible by the utilization of the Tycho-1 Catalog. The ACT, combining the old Astrographic Catalog (AC) data with the Tycho-1 positions, is the best known example of this. The Tycho-2 consortium, led by E. Høg, has performed new reductions on the Tycho data. This not only has increased the astrometric and photometric accuracies of the original 1 million Tycho-1 stars, but also has added an additional 1.5 million stars. The U.S. Naval Observatory led the effort to compute the proper motions of these 2.5 million stars. They are based not only on the AC data but also include over 140 other ground-based catalogs, all directly reduced to the Hipparcos system. The result of these efforts is the Tycho-2 Catalog, available since February 2000. Positions, proper motions, and BT and VT magnitudes are given for 2.5 million stars. The catalog is 99% complete to V=11.0, and 90% complete to V=11.5. Positional accuracies at the mean epochs vary from < 10 mas for stars V < 9 to just under 100 mas for V > 12. Proper motion accuracies are estimated to be 1.3 mas/year to 3.0 mas/year for the same magnitude ranges. Photometric accuracies range from 0.02 magnitudes for the brightest stars to 0.25 magnitudes for the faintest.

AbstractMajor advances in our understanding of the Universe have historically come from dramatic improvements in our ability to accurately measure astronomical quantities. The astrometric observations obtained by modern digital sky surveys are enabling unprecedentedly massive and robust studies of the kinematics of the Milky Way. For example, the astrometric data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), together with half a century old astrometry from the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSS), have enabled the construction of a catalog that includes absolute proper motions as accurate as 3 mas/year for about 20 million stars brighter than V=20, and for 80,000 spectroscopically confirmed quasars which provide exquisite error assessment. We discuss here several ongoing studies of Milky Way kinematics based on this catalog. The upcoming next-generation surveys will maintain this revolutionary progress. For example, we show using realistic simulations that the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will measure proper motions accurate to 1 mas/year to a limit 4 magnitude fainter than possible with SDSS and POSS catalogs, or with the Gaia survey. LSST will also obtain geometric parallaxes with accuracy similar to Gaia's at its faint end (0.3 mas at V=20), and extend them to V=24 with an accuracy of 3 mas. We discuss the impact that these LSST measurements will have on studies of the Milky Way kinematics, and potential synergies with the Gaia survey.

AbstractThe SUPERBLINK survey catalogs all stars brighter than R = 19 mag and with proper motions larger than 40 mas yr−1, down to a declination of −33○. The catalog inevitably includes a significant fraction of the presumed low-mass members of several nearby young moving groups (Beta Pic, AB Dor, Tuc-Hor, Argus), or low-mass escapees from the Hyades and Pleiades clusters. We discuss opportunities and challenges in identifying the missing M dwarf members of these moving groups. While rounding up the majority of the potential M dwarf members of these groups, such samples are significantly affected by co-moving field stars, both young and old, due to the heavy clumping of the local field population in velocity space.

AbstractThe mid-infrared provides a unique view of galaxy stellar populations, sensitive to both the integrated light of old, low-mass stars and to individual dusty mass-losing stars. We present results from an extended Spitzer/IRAC survey of M31 with total lengths of 6.6 and 4.4 degrees along the major and minor axes, respectively. The integrated surface brightness profile proves to be surprisingly difficult to trace in the outskirts of the galaxy, but we can also investigate the disk/halo transition via a star count profile, with careful correction for foreground and background contamination. Our point-source catalog allows us to report on mid-infrared properties of individual objects in the outskirts of M31, via cross-correlation with PAndAS, WISE, and other catalogs.

For more than 50 years, the continuous photographic observations of asteroids have been carried outwith telescopes of the Astronomical Observatory of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and the Main Astronomical Observatory of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. About 3,000 photographic plates were obtained, some of which were exposed in 1908. We collected the data on more than 5,500 positions and magnitudes of asteroids on these astroplates taking into account all results of the processing of observations available in various publications and in the Minor Planet Center database. All positional data were compared with JPL ephemeris and analyzed. From different series of asteroid observations the values of positional accuracy were obtained, depending on the methods of measuring and processing the plates and reference catalogs of stars. In order to systematically improve the obtained asteroid positions, we evaluated the possibilities of reprocessing some of the earliest asteroid observations applying the modern star high accuracy catalogs. Using the Tycho-2, Gaia DR2, and Gaia EDR3 as the reference catalogs, the 590 astroplates exposed on the MAO NASU Double Long-Focus Astrograph (DLA) in 1952-1986 were reprocessed based on old plate measurements. All newly determined and previous original asteroid positions were compared with the JPL ephemeris. The comparison results show an improvement in the systematic and random components of the accuracy of coordinates for new positions of asteroids. When comparing the new positions of the asteroids determined in the Tycho-2 and Gaia catalog systems, no significant changes in accuracy were found.

The average undergraduate horticulture major at the Univ. of Florida Academic Program at Fort Lauderdale is 38 years old. The older, non-traditional student population is quite diverse, but many individuals are motivated by a desire to change careers, and many of them have taken extensive academic course work at other institutions prior to applying for admission to the Univ. of Florida. Academic advisement of this type of student presents a substantial challenge because of the uncertainty of content and vigor of prior academic preparation. To help meet this challenge, we have developed several academic advisement checklists that indicate numbers and titles of critical preprofessional and general education courses from the academic institutions that have been most frequently attended by the highest numbers of the incoming non-traditional students. These checklists have been cross-referenced between the catalogs of the various academic institutions and the Univ. of Florida catalog. We use these documents to evaluate the academic preparation of incoming transfer students and to assist them in making correct course selections to remedy any academic deficiencies that could negatively influence their success in upper division horticulture course work.

Abstract:
Aims. We plan to identify the members of the Bochum 7 association by performing simultaneous astrometric and spectrophotometric analyses, and estimate its distance and evolutionary stage. Methods. We used our own visual spectroscopic and UBV photometric data of a 30′ × 30′ region centered at = 8h44m47.2s, = −45°58′55.5″. This information enabled us to estimate the spectral classification and distance of all stars present in the region. The proper motion was analyzed with data of the UCAC 5 catalog and was used to identify the members of this association. We added JHK data from 2MASS and IRAS catalogs to check for the presence of infrared (IR) excess stars. Results. We found that Bochum 7 is an OB association with at least 27 identified stellar members (l = 265°.12, b = − 2°) at a distance of ≃5640 pc. Its proper motion is μαcos δ = −4.92 ± 0.08 mas yr−1, μδ = 3.26 ± 0.08 mas yr−1. We derived an average heliocentric radial velocity of ~35 km s−1 and were able to confirm the binary nature of the (ALS 1135) system and detect four new binary star candidates. Analysis of data for massive Bo 7 star candidates points towards a young age (≤ 3 × 106 years old) for the association, although the presence of a previous episode of star formation remains to be analyzed.

The piano pieces by Argentine composers are a significant contribution to piano literature. They represent the voice of a nation that has enjoyed a strong musical tradition, with a noted European influence and a unique fusion of Argentine folk dances and songs. In that regard, these works possess distinctive qualities and an incomparable style. Unfortunately, a large proportion of these compositions remain unknown.This annotated catalog focuses on the piano literature by Argentine composers from the late nineteenth and the twentieth centuries, that are available in U.S. libraries. Its purpose is to aid pianists, educators, and music historians discover a wealth of repertoire that has long been neglected. The piano works by Argentine composers, including Julian Aguirre (1868-1924), Felipe Boero (1884-1958), Juan Jose Castro (1895-1968), Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983), and Carlos Guastavino (1912-2000) are listed alphabetically by composer. Each entry includes publishing information, level of difficulty, U.S. libraries that hold the scores, and a descriptive paragraph. Transcriptions, arrangements, works for piano and tape, and prepared piano have not been included.

A key concern for private insurers is how the relative contributions to loss from wind and water may change because damage from flood is not typically covered in the residential market. This study addresses the concern by considering how climate change by 2050 under an extreme climate scenario may impact hurricane frequency and damage. Using a stochastic catalog of 100,000 years of possible events that can occur in today’s climate, and available information on how hurricane frequency and intensity may change, multiple catalogs of events are created to reflect future hurricane activity. Climate change impacts on precipitation rate are not accounted for here, although sea level rise is included to understand how much worse storm surge may become. Relative changes to wind loss and coastal flood loss are examined for three economically significant and hurricane prone urban locations: Houston-Galveston, Miami, and New York. Results show that relative changes in wind loss may pale in comparison to relative changes in storm surge loss. Houston shows large increases in relative contribution of surge to total loss because the contribution is currently small, New York shows the least significant increases because contributions are currently large, and Miami is in the middle.

Abstract:
In the vast and varied written heritage of Metropolitan and Patriarch Nikon, the inscriptions on the “holy things” that were written with the participa- tion of, or on his behalf, occupy a special place. These texts, different in volume and content, exist as notes on sheets of manuscript and early printed books, in the form of belts and compositions of tiled temple decoration, as well as on an- timenes, crosses, icons, bells, liturgical vessels, and seals. Many of them by their origin and location are associated with the patriarchal monasteries — the Resur- rection in New Jerusalem near Moscow, the Iversky Svyatoozersky in Valdai and the Onega Godfather on the Kiy-island. The corpus of the inscriptions, united by the name of the Primate, has never been studied in its entirety and systematically. The authors of the article attempted to fill these gaps by applying an integrated approach in the study. They prepared on the principle of a catalog a register of “holy things” — sacred objects that make up a single whole with the texts present- ed on them. The inscriptions are classified according to the functional purpose of the objects on which they are located. The groups of annals-historical, spiritual- educational, liturgical, historical-topographic, supplementary and owner’s in- scriptions are distinguished. Historical and philological research of texts is com- plemented by an analysis of the symbolic and semantic aspects of their architectur- al and artistic design. The inscriptions appear in the context of the iconic work of Patriarch Nikon, including hierotopic, iconographic and architectural programs, embodied with the participation of masters from Great, Small and White Russia. This chapter follows different forms of the Greek cultural catalog from the relatively simple (and probably historically prior) speeches of Palamedes and Prometheus to the more dramatically complex catalogs of Theseus in Euripides' Suppliants and the first stasimon of the Antigone. In all these texts, the chapter argues that the cultural catalog seeks to grasp the essential elements of human culture and understand the relationship to divinity. Yet instead of yielding a clear picture of human and divine agency, the rhetoric and staging of the catalogs have a tendency to complicate the theological issues they raise. Finally, the chapter turns for comparison to the “Sisyphus fragment” attributed to Critias, which shows an extreme form of such theological questioning. It also illustrates a major formal difference between the cultural catalog and developmental narratives of human civilization, which seem to have circulated around the same time.

Spatial data sharing among both private and public organizations is an old issue. Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDIs) have been proposed to solve data integration and discovery problems. Nonetheless, they can only partially work out these problems, as most of their catalog services are built on keyword based search. This approach always results in low precision on searching results. One of the greatest challenges in spatial integration is to provide the semantics for underlying data and services. This chapter describes a distributed catalog service that uses ontologies to describe underlying information so as to improve searching precision. The proposed catalog service can rewrite and propagate queries to other distributed catalogs to cooperate and exchange information directly without the traditional problems imposed by a centralized architecture.

A Web-based Product Catalog is an online product database that requires easy access from anywhere in the world and uses the most efficient method for information retrieval. The database should support all products no matter what attributes the products have. Many large businesses have been unsuccessful in their attempts to create a product database that enables fast, efficient access across the Web. As there are many complex issues involved with the storage of product information, many companies settle for poorly designed databases as a tradeoff to becoming Web compatible faster. This chapter explores database-driven E-Commerce product catalogs and the issues that inhibit its creation. A Web-based Product Catalog System has been put forward in this chapter that allows for storage of all product specific information. Storage and retrieval of attributes that have no structure, like media objects (pictures, video clips, audio samples) have also been implemented in this system. Media objects are becoming an important feature to product catalogs, especially those intended for deployment on the Internet. Another important feature supported by the system is the ability switch between languages. This multi-language feature allows all of the product information to be understood right around the world, broadening the potential users of the system.

Librarians, archivists, and museum professionals are increasingly realizing the value of using and contributing information to Wikipedia through projects such as edit-a-thons and the 1Lib1Ref project. As the amount of knowledge in Wikipedia and Wikidata grows, the benefits to libraries in partnering with Wikimedia projects to enhance their own bibliographic records and catalog search results also increase. Conversely, librarians have created an immense number of bibliographic and authority records that Wikipedia and Wikidata editors can use both as resources in and of themselves and as examples of various approaches to metadata and knowledge creation. Despite some challenges there are numerous benefits for working to integrate library data with Wikipedia more closely. This chapter will serve to highlight differences between Wikipedia resources and library catalog records, and how librarians and Wikipedians can learn from each other to improve description and discoverability in both Wikipedia and library catalogs for their respective users. It will also illustrate differences between these two systems in order to reduce confusion and errors when data are merged uncritically. The discussion draws on experience gained from a previous Illinois State University Research Grant-funded project that used the Wikipedia List of African-American writers to enhance library catalog records.

The National Library of Romania shares digital resources, providing access to knowledge and cultural heritage, through three online platforms. These are: a) The Traditional Virtual Catalog for the books published before 1993. It is the virtual image of the traditional catalog which is organized alphabetically by author name in the appropriate folders physical drawers. 1,600,000 sheets are structured in 1600 folders, and a folder contains on average 1,000 sheets scanned catalog. Book-to-Book Platform, a crowd-cataloguing tool, provides both search and retrieval of bibliographic information in virtual catalog of books traditionally published before 1993 and the possibility to learn and contribute voluntarily in the development of the catalog by creating associated metadata catalog sheets scanned. Book-to-Book is a collaborative project.Through specialized internships and specialized seminars in National Library of Romania, students from Faculty of Letters are better prepared for integration in labor market, achieving skills and abilities, a good level of professional preparation The platform and database was designed by the students from the Techical University Bucuresti. The old town of Arequipa - Peru was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000. The architectural style of the buildings in the city of Arequipa has evolved, adapting to the prevailing architectural trends over time, and to the constant earthquakes that have marked the pattern of its transformation through history. Some of the main identified styles are Andean baroque, neo-colonial, historicist, modernist, and postmodernist. This project proposes a qualitative, historical, spatial, and stylistic analysis of the buildings built in the city according to academic criteria and the collective memory of the inhabitants of Arequipa. The applied method consists of a stage-by-stage evaluation of the main representative buildings in the city using mapping and matrix tabulations from graphic documentation, in situ surveys, academic criteria according to the categories of antiquity, historicity, instrumentality and artistic value. In addition, the study aims to reflect the point of view of the buildings’ inhabitants, whilst becoming a useful tool for them. It will result in the development of a catalog of relevant buildings that will help to understand their representativeness in society.

Some of the key issues are: the optimal search problem, the burden imposed on the server of a network-based catalog or the time spent in data retrieval, identical parts in different vendor catalogs, and the excessive amount of data in a database of component information. The paper addresses the problem of network “burden,” the problem of identical parts, and the excessive data problem. The authors employ a “Configuration-decomposition” strategy in the approach to the excessive data problem. As an example of applying this approach, the implementation of the authors’ experimental system for part selection is discussed.

This paper presents a framework-based procedure to generate three-dimensional electronic catalogs (3d e-catalogs), which link three-dimensional viewing windows (3d viewing windows) to e-catalogs. The 3d viewing windows include the three-dimensional interactive and event-driven objects (3d objects) of products for e-catalogs; the 3d viewing windows view and manipulate the 3d objects. The framework provides users with the template models of 3d viewing windows and 3d objects; the template model of a 3d viewing window is defined in HTML and the template model of a 3d object is defined in VRML. Users will specify the components of the template models, and complete the 3d viewing windows including the 3d objects of the new products to be displayed in 3d e-catalogs. In addition, the framework presents the way to get hierarchical 3d models from CAD models of products.

Abstract In this paper a general design and catalog representation is proposed and implemented. The representation is applied to mixed continuous variable and catalog search using genetic algorithms. The representation addresses a number of common catalog search design scenarios. In addition to catalogs of static data (e.g., different sizes of pipes), it is possible to model/search subdesigns that can provide performance data based upon operating conditions. The use of catalog hierarchies allows the search to simultaneously consider catalogs from different vendors and at different levels of detail, therefore achieving the capability of modeling solutions containing general information. The capabilities of the representation are demonstrated through an object-oriented computer implementation that uses a genetic optimization and search algorithm.

Abstract Catalog design is the process of forming functional systems by assembling selected components from manufacturers’ catalogs. Generally, the engineer performs this design process in two steps: the selection of a basic system configuration, and the subsequent selection of specific components for that configuration. A genetic algorithm approach to catalog design will allow the integration of these two steps. This paper focuses on the four components of a genetic algorithm that must be developed for application to the catalog design problem. These operators include: a genetic representation of the design that includes its component parts and their connectivity, an initialization process for generating an initial set of designs, and a method for the exchange of the designs’ genetic information.

Open and distance learning (ODL) is an important channel for increasing education opportunities and outcomes. It is particularly relevant for the Pacific, given small dispersed remote populations and limited access to secondary and post-secondary opportunities in rural and outer island locations. Despite the importance of ODL to the region and the immediate need to build capacity, there has been limited investment. The COVID-19 pandemic has further reinforced the need for the Pacific to be well-prepared for non-contact teaching and learning approaches outside traditional classroom-based practices. This paper charts the development of an ODL course catalogue, as part of a wider initiative, to build capacity by assisting classroom-based teachers to locate professional development opportunities in and through ODL. The process began with the development of a concept note and an attempt to survey what training was already available in the region. This led to the development of a prototype which was subsequently reviewed through three different stakeholder lenses. The combined feedback from these reviews was then used to inform development of a request for proposals to create the fully fledged version of the ODL course catalogue. Based on this experience, and approached from a pragmatic perspective, the paper will identify some key principles for development work of this nature, particularly within the Pacific region.

Abstract This paper develops a new method for implementing mass-customization, namely, the customization around standard products, or catalog-based customization. The method addresses the customization requirements of a class of products that are complex in configuration, multi-functional and structurally similar. We formulate catalog-based customization as an optimization problem consistent with the manufacturer’s goal of incurring minimal costs in the redesign of existing standard components, while meeting customer specifications and satisfying design constraints. The ‘catalog-based’ nature of the formulation raises concomitant issues of cost function development and problem simplification/solution. We identify the generational structure as best suited to exploit the cost data in existing catalogs and construct a product cost function. The cost-estimation methods used by the generational structure in the construction are identified as weight-based — for modeling the material costs, and methods based on similarity principles and regression analyses — for the production costs. The optimization formulation of catalog-based customization may be simplified by an a priori identification of a standard catalog design as the customization basis. This is accomplished with function costing — a cost-estimation hypothesis that uses product functionality to develop an approximate cost-estimate. The function-costing estimate is also used to abstract features from the standard base design into the optimization formulation. The preferred solution strategy for the optimization formulation is identified as genetic algorithms. We apply the customization method developed to Brushless D.C. Permanent Magnet (BDCPM) motors and obtain optimal minimal cost custom designs (from the standard designs of a BDCPM motor family) for different sets of customer requirements.

As electronic devices and products are being miniaturized, the printed wiring boards (PWBs) within them are also being miniaturized. Therefore, it is becoming increasingly difficult to decide the drilling conditions required for producing small-diameter and high-density holes. We have been focusing on drilling conditions recommended in drill catalogs and have been attempting to gather knowledge that drilling experts use to decide the drilling conditions. In this study, we classify drills using the relationship between the diameter and the flute length and hence show that the methods used for setting the cutting conditions are different in different regions of a PWB. In addition, by using a catalog of microdrills that use alloy steel as the work material, we discuss how unique drilling conditions can be set for PWBs.

Earthquake focal mechanisms have contributed substantially to our understanding of modern tectonic stress regimes, perhaps more than any other data source. Studies generally group focal mechanisms by epicentral location to examine variations in stress across a region. However, stress variations with depth have rarely been considered, either due to data limitations or because they were believed to be negligible. This study presents 3D grids of tectonic stress tensors using existing focal mechanism catalogs from several subduction zones, including Cascadia, Japan, Nankai, Mexico, and northern Chile. We bin data into 50 x 50 x 10 km cells (north, east, vertical), with 50% overlap in all three directions. This resulted in 181380 stress inversions, with 90% of these in Japan (including Nankai). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first examination of stress changes with depth in several of these regions. The resulting maps and cross-sections of stress can help distinguish locked and creeping segments of the plate interface. Similarly, by dividing the focal mechanism catalog in northern Japan into those before and those &amp;gt;6 months after the 2011 Mw 9.1 Tohoku-Oki earthquake, we are able to produce detailed 3D maps of stress rotation, which is close to 90° near the areas of highest slip. These results could inform geodynamic rupture models of future megathrust earthquakes in order to more accurately estimate slip, shaking, and seismic hazard. Southern Cascadia and Nankai appear to have sharp stress discontinuities at ~20 km depth, and northern Cascadia may have a similar discontinuity at ~30 km depth. These stress boundaries may relate to rheological discontinuities in the forearc, and may help us unravel how forearc composition influences subduction zone behaviour and seismic hazard.
