The act of whistling, being called as “darling”, “gek”, “handsome” or “beautiful” and unwanted verbal comments are classified as “catcalling”, which is included as a form of harassment. This harassment can be easily experienced by anyone in their daily lives, even today, it is still considered as something normal. Seeing this phenomenon, it is deemed necessary to study the “catcalling” regulation in the Indonesian legal system and the view of the community towards “catcalling” itself. This reveals to the conclusion that catcalling is accepted as normal. Even though catcalling is like a compliment, there is a significant difference between the two. Compliments are given sincerely, whereas catcalling aims to indirectly harass women. This thesis investigates women's feelings on being subjected to piropos (catcalling) in their everyday lives. Through interviews with four Cuban women living in Havana, I analyse women's experiences of piropos through a phenomenological lens and through speech theory, investigating how norms surrounding sexualities and gender are materialised in and between language, bodies and spaces. I also investigate which acts of resistance and defence mechanisms my interviewees employ in order to cope with piropos. The first part of the analysis investigates the gendered dimensions of piropos, discussing

So much for the logic of misogyny. What about its substance? How does it manifest itself in contemporary cultures like those of America and Australia, i.e., suspected of being post-patriarchal? It is argued that the patriarchal norms and expectations misogyny continues to enforce largely consist in an unjust (pseudo-)moral code, obligating women to give, not withhold or eschew, or to ask him to give her, moral goods such as attention, care, sympathy, and other forms of feminine-coded labor. And privileged men’s corresponding sense of entitlement manifests itself in taking her attention and att

Everyone should be able to navigate through public spaces without facing harassment or the threat of sexual assault, yet that is a right that millions of people worldwide are routinely denied. In a country where not only women in media but females in general are subjected to catcalling, sexually offensive remarks, and harassment, there is a need for more focused research in order to bring such issues to public attention and propose relevant protection policies and mechanisms.
