ABSTRACT: The present Dissertation constitutes an applied Psychoanalysis exercise to J. D.´s Salinger masterpiece “The Catcher in the Rye”. This book entails a powerful story about the internal conflicts of an adolescent, and the present analysis seeks to bring to light new possible meanings of the story through a psychoanalytic reading and interpretative approach. The problem of adolescence is adressed to what concerns the demand for an identitary construction and the concomitant demand for the place of the individual self in the world, and its constant confrontation between the internal conflicts lived and the surrounding reality, or is, in the relationship of the main character with his social and family environment.

Full textThis thesis examines the psychological and social repercussions of trauma on a child’s maturation process using three landmark novels of the Bildungsroman genre, J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, and Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Grounding my analysis on the findings of trauma theorists Cathy Caruth, Shoshana Felman, Ronald Granofsky, and Dominick LaCapra, and psychiatrists Dori Laub and Judith Lewis Herman, I demonstrate that trauma can occupy two contradictory but inextricably linked functions in the maturation process, that of both hindering and catalyzing a child’s coming-of-age. I demonstrate that Holden Caulfield, Ponyboy Curtis, and Charlie all display behaviours that suggest the paralyzing nature of trauma and its initial ability to prevent the child from growing up. I then argue that trauma, or the acceptance of one’s traumatic past, has the potential to accelerate the maturation process. My study also highlights the importance of the testimonial process in the recovery from trauma and the character's ensuing maturity. Because of the omnipresence of testimony in young people’s literature, its ramifications and implications are explored in each chapter of this thesis. Through the use of close reading, I study each work independently, evaluate each character’s individual response to trauma, and establish the thematic vocabulary and the interlinks that allow a conversation between the three novels. Although the studied works propose different types of traumatic negotiation and response, each novel is dialogically linked with the other. This thesis offers new readings of each novel, while establishing insightful comparisons between the three works. The intent of this thesis is therefore to contribute to the assessment of each narrative and to a general understanding of the role of trauma in young people’s literature.

J. D. Salinger’s novel The Catcher in the Rye is often regarded as young adult literature. Salinger portrays the protagonist, Holden Caulfield, as a morbid young man who suffers from the trauma of his brother’s death and an adolescent crisis. Many critics have mentioned the young man’s psychological condition, but very few of them give a systematic interpretation with professional terminologies. Moreover, they seldom observe Holden’s interpersonal relationships in detail, especially parents-son relationship. My study employs Karen Horney’s psychological theory (largely from her Neurosis and Human Growth) to examine closely Holden’s psychological problems and his mental breakdown in three chapters. Chapter One studies Holden’s resigned tendency. According to Horney’s theory of neurosis, Holden is dominated by resignation. He seldom strives for achievement and thinks little about his future. He merely wants everything to stay the same forever. Meantime, he does not know how to build meaningful and lasting relationships with other people. Chapter Two investigates Holden’s ambivalence through his interpersonal relationships, sexuality, and his attitude toward movies. Holden wants to be alone but constantly seeks company. Unfortunately, there are no good role models around for him to follow. Also, he shows interest in sex but he fails to build intimate relationships with females. Sometimes he even feels confused about his sexual tendency. Moreover, he confesses that he hates movies but he often sees himself in terms of some conventional characters from the movies. Although he professes to hate movies, he cannot help but be deeply influenced by them. His two-sided attitude reveals his unstable psychical condition. Chapter Three focuses on Holden’s search for glory. Because of unfavorable growing surroundings, Holden feels anxious and unsafe. Therefore, he creates idealized self-images to release his anxieties. However, the idealized images fail to release his negative feelings; they merely aggravate his psychical problems. Altogether, the three chapters of my thesis scrutinize Holden’s psychological problems and struggles in a professional and organized manner. My investigation surpasses previous criticism in giving a systematic picture of Holden’s mental breakdown.

Thesis Title: Journey to Self-identity: A Research on Teenagers’ Process of Socialization in J. D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye The Graduate Program of the Department of English Language, Literature and Linguistics Providence University 89th School Year Graduate: Hank Jean-Hwah Huang Advisor: Dr. Patricia Haseltine Abstract The Catcher in the Rye is J. D. Salinger’s most remarkable work that attracts widespread attention in modern American literature. In Salinger’s acute portrait, this novel manifests the bitterness and difficulties of a sixteen-year-old hero, Holden Caulfield, and his mental development in the process of socialization. The attention in this thesis mainly focuses on the process of adolescents’ development by means of applying both literary review and psychological investigation. This thesis is divided into five chapters. In the first chapter of the introduction, I introduce the historical background and critical review of the novel and summarize my literary reaction and theoretical background. My second and third chapters are mostly literary reaction and discussion of the novel. In Chapter Two, the discussion is concerned with Holden’s social relationship, including the cause of his alienation, his relationship with his peers, his frustration with his sexual immaturity, and his strategy of escaping when facing problems. In Chapter Three, I further explore Holden’s reactions toward the authority, including his school teachers and parents. As for Holden’s teachers, they cannot really help Holden solve his problems because of their failure in communication and their negative demonstration of insincerity and phoniness. For Holden’s parents, their expectations on Holden cause him lots of pressure, and force him to adopt a strategy of escaping away to the West. The fourth chapter is the central concentration of my thesis. By utilizing Kohlberg and Erikson’s assumptions and theories of children’s development, this reading manifests that Holden’s crisis is actually a generalized situation which every young individual may possibly encounter in one’s process of development. For Holden, the key to change in his development is the love from his sister. It is Phoebe who brings him back from the unrealistic childhood innocence to make Holden understand the social responsibility that he has to undertake. In the last chapter, I conclude all my previous discussions into a statement, conveying my opinion that Holden’s story, as a particular case of an individual, could also be cognized as an example to most adolescents who are in their developmental process of their budding period. Through my research, it is best wished that this thesis can somewhat contribute to understand adolescents in their process of development not only in The Catcher in the Rye but also in all other literary works with related themes about adolescents in real life.
