Abstract:
This study is a critique of a transitional state of mind and a comment on a juncture of indecision in J. D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye (1951). It is about a teenage boy who got expelled from his school and avoided going to his home for a few days. Lonely, on the cusp of adulthood, Holden Caulfield reclusively vacillates between what he was and what he is going to be. Since its publication till present, J. D. Salinger's Catcher is perceived as one of the perceptible novels to protrude from post-World War II. It revolves around the mettle of a troubled boy, called Holden Caulfield, towards a revelation. Tracking Holden's biography allows Salinger to wander into the minds of his peer adolescents and create a microcosm for them. The analysis will, therefore, be designated as a coming of age novel and as a trauma of World War II. The paper aims at examining the psychological structure of adolescence and what lies beyond and of the trauma of war and what did leave behind. The notions of Holden's angst and alienation justify the concept of vacillation and deepen the psychological and mental disorder of his oscillatory time and age. In short, this article aims to give a comprehensive account of the ambience of adolescents and how certain psychological and social conditions are crystalized behind their vacillation.

Abstract:
According to philosopher Stanley Cavell, “what philosophy is dissatisfied with is inherently the everyday” (1988: 171). The everyday is also an ambiguous but central concept in Nabokov’s and Salinger’s most famous novels. Their narrators mock and criticize the vulgarity of whatever they associate with everyday life – clichés, stock ideas, routines. This seemingly harmless mindset has serious ethical consequences: Holden and Humbert start associating the concept of the everyday with moral depravity. They become blind to the redeemable qualities of the ordinary, which leads them to consider the Other merely as a product of clichés. Both Nabokov and Salinger imply that one cannot acknowledge the alterity of the Other without making peace with ordinariness of everyday life. However, there is an important difference between the two novels: while Salinger sets out to depict how the everyday can be reclaimed and the Other acknowledged, Lolita employs a narrator who never manages to re-evaluate his approach to the ordinary.

Abstract:
The first Russian translation of J. D. Salinger’s novel The Catcher in the Rye (1951) was produced in 1960 by Rita Rait-Kovaleva, a renowned translator of contemporary Western literature (English, French, German) in the Soviet Union. This essay examines Rait’s translation of The Catcher in the Rye in the context of the problem of censorship and translation, focusing on several instances of Rait’s translation of profanities and sex-related passages of The Catcher in the Rye. It demonstrates how the creative strategies of the translator not only helped her overcome censorship barriers but also transformed a foreign text into a new cultural model.

Abstract:
The Catcher in the Rye, a 1951 novel by J. D. Salinger, highlights the construction of the character as the leading role of the narrative. The fictional character has provoked closer looks on the part of the Literary Studies, mainly on Narrative Studies field, which analyses the fictional figure considering its ideological, social, and identity aspects. Therefore, in this article, I aim to discuss character figuration in the cited novel, focusing on the main character, Holden Caulfield, through the lens of his figuration dynamics. For the analysis, I consider the themes through which the constitutive material of the fictional figure is constituted, namely: his relation to time, childhood, innocence, and sexuality. The theoretical framework is shaped through authors such as Ian Watt, Mikhail Bakhtin, Michel Zéraffa, E. M. Forster, Carlos Reis, and Maria da Glória Bordini.

Abstract:
This paper deals with satire in two novels: The Catcher in the Rye and Lucky Jim by J. D. Salinger and Kingsley Amis, respectively. It aims at considering the elements encompassed in the process of satirizing in both works and each writer's manipulation of them, taking into consideration the differences.Making use of characterization, style, humor, irony, ridicule and even fallacy as tools of satire, both writers intended to criticize, occasionally, all society under the title of social satire, and in other occasions, some certain aspects of society or certain establishments and enterprises. Through a synchronic perspective, the research is to underline, analyze and assess the use of satire in both works and how far each writer has come to his aims by means of it.The conclusion at the end of the paper sums up each writer’s use of satire. The results of the comparisons, analysis and assessment of the two novels show that the writers varied in their use of satire. J. D. Salinger tends to satirize all around him. As for Kingsley Amis, he satirizes the academics who betray and the milieu and motivations leading to make them as such.

Abstract:
The research features syntactic structure in the twentieth century "The Catcher in the Rye" by J. D. Salinger and the twenty first century "Fates and Furies" by L. Groff. The research objective was to study the nature of syntactic relations expressed by word order in speech of narrators and characters. The paper outlines the rules of word order in the English sentence and reviews related studies in the field of syntax. The author analyzed the syntactic structure of sentences in the speech of narrators and characters in the two novels. The analysis was based on the descriptive method and techniques of observation, interpretation, comparison, and generalization. There were numerous examples of omission of auxiliary verbs in interrogative sentences in characters' speech, as well as interrogative sentences with affirmative structure. In "The Catcher in the Rye", affirmative sentences obecame interrogative with the help of interjections eh and ah. Both novels contained sentences where adverbial modifiers, objects, or attributes preceded the main parts – in the narrators' speech. A lot of one-member and contextually incomplete sentences were used to describe events and personages in both novels. In "The Catcher in the Rye", the narrator's speech revealed few cases of violations of word order rules, mostly in sentences with direct word order. The characters' speech appeared to contain much more cases of word order violations, since the novel features colloquial speech of twentieth century American teenagers. The speech of adult personages was characterized by correct word order. In "Fates and Furies", the narrator's speech demonstrated a significant number of elliptical sentences where auxiliary verb to be was omitted in simple verbal predicate with the verb in Present Continuous, as well as in compound nominal predicate and in passive voice. A comparative study of syntactic structure contributed to a deeper understanding of the nature of syntactic relations reflected by word order in the English sentence, grammatical structure of the English language, and popular types of sentences. In addition, the study showed the way native speakers express their ideas and thoughts by linguistic means and violate linguistic norms. The results can be used in various grammar courses and compiling textbooks.

Abstract:

ABSTRACT: The present Dissertation constitutes an applied Psychoanalysis exercise to J. D.´s Salinger masterpiece “The Catcher in the Rye”. This book entails a powerful story about the internal conflicts of an adolescent, and the present analysis seeks to bring to light new possible meanings of the story through a psychoanalytic reading and interpretative approach. The problem of adolescence is adressed to what concerns the demand for an identitary construction and the concomitant demand for the place of the individual self in the world, and its constant confrontation between the internal conflicts lived and the surrounding reality, or is, in the relationship of the main character with his social and family environment.

Abstract:
Jerome David Salinger´s Holden Caulfield, the protagonist in The Catcher in the Rye, is seen through the lens of psychoanalytical literary criticism. He is a complex character, who is torn between his dreams and emotions. He is often depicted as a liar, a rebel who drops out of school or as a depressed young man who is admitted into care for his mental problems. Some of these issues are hidden in the vernacular teenage language. The image of Holden as having a personality that is in line with narcissism is therefore discussed. The intention is to question whether or not Holden shows symptoms of a narcissistic personality. Contrary to the personality traits that some critics have described, this essay focuses on the sides of Holden´s personality that show empathy, generosity and love, despite the traumas of his childhood.

Abstract:
Ce mémoire de maîtrise propose une étude détaillée des répercussions sociales et psychologiques des évènements traumatiques sur le développement de l’enfant en utilisant trois Bildungsromane importants, The Catcher in the Rye de J.D. Salinger, The Outsiders de S.E. Hinton et The Perks of Being a Wallflower de Stephen Chbosky.
This thesis examines the psychological and social repercussions of trauma on a child’s maturation process using three landmark novels of the Bildungsroman genre, J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, and Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Grounding my analysis on the findings of trauma theorists Cathy Caruth, Shoshana Felman, Ronald Granofsky, and Dominick LaCapra, and psychiatrists Dori Laub and Judith Lewis Herman, I demonstrate that trauma can occupy two contradictory but inextricably linked functions in the maturation process, that of both hindering and catalyzing a child’s coming-of-age. I demonstrate that Holden Caulfield, Ponyboy Curtis, and Charlie all display behaviours that suggest the paralyzing nature of trauma and its initial ability to prevent the child from growing up. I then argue that trauma, or the acceptance of one’s traumatic past, has the potential to accelerate the maturation process. My study also highlights the importance of the testimonial process in the recovery from trauma and the character's ensuing maturity. Because of the omnipresence of testimony in young people’s literature, its ramifications and implications are explored in each chapter of this thesis. Through the use of close reading, I study each work independently, evaluate each character’s individual response to trauma, and establish the thematic vocabulary and the interlinks that allow a conversation between the three novels. Although the studied works propose different types of traumatic negotiation and response, each novel is dialogically linked with the other. This thesis offers new readings of each novel, while establishing insightful comparisons between the three works. The intent of this thesis is therefore to contribute to the assessment of each narrative and to a general understanding of the role of trauma in young people’s literature.

Abstract:

J. D. Salinger’s novel The Catcher in the Rye is often regarded as young adult literature. Salinger portrays the protagonist, Holden Caulfield, as a morbid young man who suffers from the trauma of his brother’s death and an adolescent crisis. Many critics have mentioned the young man’s psychological condition, but very few of them give a systematic interpretation with professional terminologies. Moreover, they seldom observe Holden’s interpersonal relationships in detail, especially parents-son relationship. My study employs Karen Horney’s psychological theory (largely from her Neurosis and Human Growth) to examine closely Holden’s psychological problems and his mental breakdown in three chapters. Chapter One studies Holden’s resigned tendency. According to Horney’s theory of neurosis, Holden is dominated by resignation. He seldom strives for achievement and thinks little about his future. He merely wants everything to stay the same forever. Meantime, he does not know how to build meaningful and lasting relationships with other people. Chapter Two investigates Holden’s ambivalence through his interpersonal relationships, sexuality, and his attitude toward movies. Holden wants to be alone but constantly seeks company. Unfortunately, there are no good role models around for him to follow. Also, he shows interest in sex but he fails to build intimate relationships with females. Sometimes he even feels confused about his sexual tendency. Moreover, he confesses that he hates movies but he often sees himself in terms of some conventional characters from the movies. Although he professes to hate movies, he cannot help but be deeply influenced by them. His two-sided attitude reveals his unstable psychical condition. Chapter Three focuses on Holden’s search for glory. Because of unfavorable growing surroundings, Holden feels anxious and unsafe. Therefore, he creates idealized self-images to release his anxieties. However, the idealized images fail to release his negative feelings; they merely aggravate his psychical problems. Altogether, the three chapters of my thesis scrutinize Holden’s psychological problems and struggles in a professional and organized manner. My investigation surpasses previous criticism in giving a systematic picture of Holden’s mental breakdown.

Thesis Title: Journey to Self-identity: A Research on Teenagers’ Process of Socialization in J. D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye The Graduate Program of the Department of English Language, Literature and Linguistics Providence University 89th School Year Graduate: Hank Jean-Hwah Huang Advisor: Dr. Patricia Haseltine Abstract The Catcher in the Rye is J. D. Salinger’s most remarkable work that attracts widespread attention in modern American literature. In Salinger’s acute portrait, this novel manifests the bitterness and difficulties of a sixteen-year-old hero, Holden Caulfield, and his mental development in the process of socialization. The attention in this thesis mainly focuses on the process of adolescents’ development by means of applying both literary review and psychological investigation. This thesis is divided into five chapters. In the first chapter of the introduction, I introduce the historical background and critical review of the novel and summarize my literary reaction and theoretical background. My second and third chapters are mostly literary reaction and discussion of the novel. In Chapter Two, the discussion is concerned with Holden’s social relationship, including the cause of his alienation, his relationship with his peers, his frustration with his sexual immaturity, and his strategy of escaping when facing problems. In Chapter Three, I further explore Holden’s reactions toward the authority, including his school teachers and parents. As for Holden’s teachers, they cannot really help Holden solve his problems because of their failure in communication and their negative demonstration of insincerity and phoniness. For Holden’s parents, their expectations on Holden cause him lots of pressure, and force him to adopt a strategy of escaping away to the West. The fourth chapter is the central concentration of my thesis. By utilizing Kohlberg and Erikson’s assumptions and theories of children’s development, this reading manifests that Holden’s crisis is actually a generalized situation which every young individual may possibly encounter in one’s process of development. For Holden, the key to change in his development is the love from his sister. It is Phoebe who brings him back from the unrealistic childhood innocence to make Holden understand the social responsibility that he has to undertake. In the last chapter, I conclude all my previous discussions into a statement, conveying my opinion that Holden’s story, as a particular case of an individual, could also be cognized as an example to most adolescents who are in their developmental process of their budding period. Through my research, it is best wished that this thesis can somewhat contribute to understand adolescents in their process of development not only in The Catcher in the Rye but also in all other literary works with related themes about adolescents in real life.

Abstract:
Chapter Three begins with analysis of the function of the American West in J. D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye (1951). The chapter goes on to reveal that Salinger’s literary depictions of Nature are significantly informed by the Americanised translations of Chinese and Japanese philosophical texts that he was studying from as early as 1946. The chapter uncovers the sources of translated Taoism to which Salinger was exposed, revealing that the translators Salinger mentions by name in his literary fiction all markedly foreground the role of Nature in their ‘American versions’ of classical Chinese and Japanese texts. Chapter Three then applies this research in close readings of two of Salinger’s later long stories, ‘Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters’ (1955) and ‘Seymour: An Introduction’ (1959), and offers a new reading of The Catcher in the Rye. These ecocritical readings expose the substantial influence of the ‘American versions’ of Taoist texts that Salinger studied on his literary depictions of an infinite and ecological Nature.
