Full textThere are still today few investigations about post-war public space reconstruction projects in Barcelona that were achieved in a monographic, extensive and deep manner. The main aim of this piece of work is to analyze the strategies of the reconstruction and the intervention that were carried out by the City Council of Barcelona which took the advantage of the situation of the Spanish Civil War destruction, in order to implement urban reform projects. For a better understanding of the practice of these actions, the project of opening and of the urbanization of Avenida de La Catedral between 1939 and 1958 has been taken as a study model. This project was considered by the City Council as one of the main urgent reconstruction works which were included in the extraordinary budget for the reconstruction, urbanization and improvement of the areas devastated by the war. At the same time the project was considered as a part of the old town reform plan. In this respect, the work of the municipal architects was fundamental, especially Adolf Florensa, who was considered as ‘’The Old Town Conservator’’.

Full textThis work is focused on the study of Monuments of Easter in Barcelona’s Cathedral along modern and contemporary ages. We call “monument” as the liturgical and artistic piece that is dedicated to keep the Holy Sacrament from Thursday to Friday inside churches and that later, is given to remember the Sacrifice of Christ to catholic community. The study is based on Barcelona’s cathedral, and it explains all the ephemeral structures (most of them made of woodworks, paintings, sculpture pieces and architectonic designs) that were used to look after the Holy Form for this important calendar days. This thesis is presented not only as an study of historical and artistic meaning, but provides both sociological and theological interpretations around this sort of pieces. Besides, our study explains the prominence of the monument that played a crucial role in the religious liturgy inside Church. The relevance of these works is shown with the participation of important Catalan painters, sculptors and architects such: Antoni Viladomat, Josep Sunyer, Josep Oriol Mestres, August Font, Enric Sagnier, etc. Finally this work unveil new information coming from archives and gets enriched of some additional artistic pieces that were given for missing but that luckily have been saved and studied. To sum up, this research tries to open new fields of study about this subject.

Full textThis PhD thesis analyses the cathedral chapter of Barcelona and its members at the end of the 15th century. This institution proves to be a major urban actor. Beyond their religious powers, bishops and canons proved to be closely involved in the history of Barcelona. Their functions grant them lands, which turn them into important landlords in the city and its surroundings. The canonicate gives them access to the "ecclesiastical arm" of the Crown of Aragon’s political institutions such as the Diputació del General de Catalunya and the Corts. Their social origins integrate them into the networks of personal relations that structure the urban oligarchy: they are fully part of the ruling elite of Barcelona and they occupy a very specific place there, because of their belonging to the Church. This situation places them at the junction of power networks, sometimes antagonistic and sometimes allied: those of the Church, those of the municipal political elite, and those of the family groups constituting the oligarchy. At the end of the Catalan Civil War of 1462-1472, Barcelona, main city of Catalonia, undergoes profound socio-political transformations: an official list of the patricians is established, the municipal government opens to the nobility and undertakes several economic recovery measures after the disturbances caused by the war. The study shows that the cathedral chapter, fully integrated with the ruling elite of the city, has to play a real role in the public life of the city during this period
