Full textThe aim of the study was to assess the frequency of traumatic life events, associated peritraumatic distress, psychosis-like experiences and personality disturbance among individuals suffering from substance-dependence compared to a control group. One hundred patients from substance-dependent treatment centers and 98 control subjects were interviewed regarding traumatic life events and associated peritraumatic distress. The severity of addiction, medical and psychosocial problems were also explored, as well as psychosis-like experiences and personality disturbance. Substance-dependent participants experienced significantly more traumatic events than the control group (p <0. 001). They experienced events related to crime, general disaster, and physical and sexual abuse more often than the control group. Their score of traumatic exposure was greater (between 1 and 193) than that of controls (1 to 62) (p <0. 001), indicating an exposure at a younger age. Forty-two percent of substance-dependent participants experienced their "worse" event before age 12 compared to 11% in the control group (p <0. 001). The associated peritraumatic distress was higher among substance-dependent participants (20. 85 (9. 9)) compared to controls (11. 25 (8. 4)) (p <0. 001) and predicted psychosis-like experiences (beta = 0. 45, p <0. 001). Medical and psychosocial problems were higher among substance-dependent participants, who also experienced more psychosis-like experiences (145. 3 (26. 7)) than the control group (115. 7 (17. 6)) (p <0. 001). These participants reported more personality disorders such as paranoid (65% vs. 33. 7%) and borderline personality disorders (55% vs. 5. 1%), followed by obsessive-compulsive (53% vs. 25. 5%) and avoidant personality disorders (49 % vs. 21. 4%) as well depressive personality-type (46% vs. 5. 1%) (all p <0. 001). To date, studies focusing on vulnerability to traumatic events are lacking among substance-dependents. The present study confirms the high prevalence of traumatic events and reveals the higher prevalence of peritraumatic distress among substance-dependents compared to the control group

Full textThis research study self representations among children from 9 to 12 in relation to socioprofessional class, cultural origin (from the maghreb or french), school adaptation, gender and separation of the parents. The hypothesis come from several domains : social, differential or developmental psychology but also from the role of self-esteem in cognitive therapies of depression as well as from sociological studies of suicide. Self representations are regarded as social representations, at the juncture of social and psychological fields. The methodology consisted of assessing responses to 688 questionnaires, essentially self evaluations. Concerning the social and cultural categories, it has been found that self-esteem reproduces the social hierarchy with the exception of children of workers from the maghreb who enjoy a higher level of self-esteem than all the others. Self diagnosed anxiety is above average among children of blue collar workers in general, especially among children from the maghreb in separated housing. The school level influences self-esteem only for certain social or cultural categories : it is a determining factor among children of french workers for instance but without any effect among children from upper classes. Concerning the separation of parents, self-esteem is lower among children of separated parents, boys or girls, but boys react particularly through trouble in school and behavioral disruption whereas girls indicate a declared anxiety most important. In a general way, boys declare an anxiety level very lower than girls. On that subject the notion of male alexithymia has been developed and extended to adults. Self-esteem in childhood is finally regarded as a measurement of + family integration ;, an idea wich is borrowed from durkheim's theory of suicide

Full textThis research is in keeping with our job as teachers of adults at the department of agriculture. This has led us to work with office employees (C and D category). These employees, mostly women, suffer from a lack of recognition from the managerial staff which mainly valorises engineering projects ; they live within an institution which is not favourable to their personal opening out. By checking the following main assumption : there is a link between the employees personality structures and their professional careers, we have developed a five points-typology : from the go-getter to the person who retreats into himself, this study identifies the elements which make up either a strong or an injured personal identity, and their links with the job. The study shows the importance of parental affection on the building of a personality. It points out parents influence on their child's professional career through their own vocational wish and their interest for the child’s success at school. The last part of this thesis suggests a new and indidualized training which is specific for these employees and contributes to the restructuring of personal identity, through the carrying out of a personal and vocational project which will enable them to play an active part within their institution

Full textThe link between personality, health and disease has been a central question for centuries, even if it remains controversial in France. Much research around the world has been carried out in this field particularly in the study of cancer, which is the basis of the present approach. This kind of research immediately raises the question of measurement, which is quite complex in relation to personality traits. The present research selected five self-evaluation tests, which are among the most widely used and which have already provided promising results in health Psychology. Although these tools emerge from different theoretical backgrounds, they were examined together through various statistical procedures with the aim of determining the relationships among them. A main objective was to categorise subjects, since health or disease primarily concerns individuaIs who tend to be overlooked in dimensional approaches focusing on variables. The main results uncover an underlying construct composed of two central dimensions in the theory of attachment: self-and other-representation. This structure is recurrent throughout the analyses of our sample. It accounts for the coherence of previous results obtained with these different scales and constitutes a solid basis for categorising subjects. A complementary set of results provides finer analyses and the assessment of other theoretical factors relevant to clinical or health Psychology. Globally, this research contributes an evaluation tool which is more reliable than each of the separate tests composing it. As such, it constitutes a useful way to advance research in many areas concerned with assessing personality traits
