Full text
Abstract:
A performance-based approach to the interaction of geometric design, speed, and safety is considered given the availability of two key documents: the Highway Safety Manual and Modeling Operating Speed: Synthesis Report. A historical look at the concept of design speed shows that although the definition of design speed has changed on more than one occasion, the same basic philosophy that related design speed to a safe speed is still reflected in current policy in supplemental guidance related to the selection of design speed. A conservative approach to establishing design criteria, used to address the range of driver, vehicle, and roadway conditions and capabilities that a designer must consider, is demonstrated. Operating speeds are shown to be higher than design speeds for design speeds of approximately 55 mph or less. This outcome may be considered undesirable, but that categorization seems to be based more on subjective judgments of what is desirable than on actual safety findings. Finally, the idea of speed management through the use of roadway geometrics (i.e., geometric designs that influence driver selection of operating speed)—one component of self-enforcing, self-explaining roadway design—is explored. Findings uncover possible challenges to implementing this idea. Five related questions are addressed: (a) What is known about the relationships between road geometry and operating speeds? (b) To what degree does road geometry influence operating speeds? (c) How are safety and security influenced by road geometry? (d) What are the potential impacts on large vehicles? and (e) What is the nature of the speed–safety trade-off?

Schintu, Paula. "“The gully-hole of literature”: On the enregisterment of cant language in seventeenth-century England." Sederi, no. 28 (2018): 99–117. http://dx.doi.org/10.34136/sederi.2018.5.

Full text
Abstract:
This essay places seventeenth-century literary renditions of cant, the language spoken by rogues and criminals in Early Modern England, into the context of “enregisterment” so as to examine its role in the process of recognition, categorization and legitimation of the canting tongue and the values it entailed. Literary representations of this variety became common in the period under analysis as a result of the criminal element that threatened the English population. Drama emerged as one of the main vehicles for the representation of cant, leading to the appearance of numerous plays that dealt with the life and adventures of English rogues. In the pages that follow, it will be argued that the study of these textual artefacts can provide valuable historical insight into the use of cant and the social connotations associated with it. In fact, the corpus-based analysis of the plays selected for this study has made it possible to identify both a common lexical repertoire and a set of sociocultural features that were associated with this underworld variety and its wicked speakers by the London non-canting audience. At the same time, it has shed light on the processes whereby this encoded speech came to index derogatory cultural values, which were spread and consumed thanks, in part, to dramatic performance, leading to the enregisterment of cant language and its recognition as a stable and unique linguistic variety.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the past 50 years of driver research from a historical context linked to the political and economic developments of the US motor carrier industry. Design/methodology/approach A comprehensive literature review was conducted and studies were targeted that exemplified eras of historic change pertaining to trucking published within the top-tier logistics journals. Findings Distinctive categorizations of driver research emerged: organizing era from 1930 to 1949, era of the collective mind from 1950 to 1979, era of the individual from 1980 to 2009 and the era of the driver as extension of the firm from 2010 to present. Research streams are highly influenced by current industry developments, economic conditions and the political landscape. Research limitations/implications The chronological framework of research established specific time-based eras. An alternative framework or other emerging eras may be conceived as scholars consider factors in addition to those explored within this research. Practical implications Managers within developing countries may leverage the research within a specific era to help resolve driver problems that have already been researched in the USA. Scholars are encouraged to further study truck drivers as critical extensions of the firm in light of the advances in autonomous vehicles, drones and other technology impacting the motor carrier industry. Social implications For nearly a half century, the turnover of truck drivers has been a major issue. This research provides driver managers with the knowledge to better understand and to more adequately provide for the needs and welfare of truck drivers. Originality/value This research is the first to fully connect the research and developments pertaining to the motor carrier industry, the occupation of truck driving and the historical developments of US policy and the economy.

Abstract:
This paper presents a novel approach to categorize multi-view vehicles in complex background using only two dimension characteristic vectors instead of high dimension vectors. Vehicles have large variability of models and the view-point makes the appearance change dramatically. Significant characteristics should be chosen as the evidence to categorize. In this paper, we categorize the vehicles into two categories – cars and lorries. Line detection method is used and calculating the average line length and the number of parallel lines as the two characteristics. A linear classifier is trained using 30 different view cars and lorries as the training set and an 10 additional different cars and lorries as the testing set.

Abstract:
Prediction of high magnitude flows is of interest in many hydrological applications such as operation of flood control reservoirs, flood forecasting and gated spillways. Of the various types of existing streamflow prediction approaches, data driven models (such as ANN) are increasingly being preferred over the traditional conceptual models due to their simplicity, fast speed and ease of use. For models that consider only historical streamflow data, an attempt has been made to design a robust model over a wide range of streamflow magnitudes. The model inputs are the immediate past streamflow data which generally do not predict the typically high flows well, particularly for large lead times. In this study, the flow range is divided into three regions (low, medium and high flow regions) and the attributes are decided based on the underlying hydrological process of the flow region. A flow forecasting model is applied for each flow region, using only the historical streamflow data as input. The proposed approach is implemented in Tryggevælde Catchment (Denmark) for 1- and 3-lead days, using the Support Vector Machine (SVM), which yields promising results, particularly for high flows in a 3-lead day model.

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper, we tackle the problem of categorizing and identifying cross-depicted historical motifs using recent deep learning techniques, with aim of developing a content-based image retrieval system. As cross-depiction, we understand the problem that the same object can be represented (depicted) in various ways. The objects of interest in this research are watermarks, which are crucial for dating manuscripts. For watermarks, cross-depiction arises due to two reasons: (i) there are many similar representations of the same motif, and (ii) there are several ways of capturing the watermarks, i.e., as the watermarks are not visible on a scan or photograph, the watermarks are typically retrieved via hand tracing, rubbing, or special photographic techniques. This leads to different representations of the same (or similar) objects, making it hard for pattern recognition methods to recognize the watermarks. While this is a simple problem for human experts, computer vision techniques have problems generalizing from the various depiction possibilities. In this paper, we present a study where we use deep neural networks for categorization of watermarks with varying levels of detail. The macro-averaged F1-score on an imbalanced 12 category classification task is 88.3 %, the multi-labelling performance (Jaccard Index) on a 622 label task is 79.5 %. To analyze the usefulness of an image-based system for assisting humanities scholars in cataloguing manuscripts, we also measure the performance of similarity matching on expert-crafted test sets of varying sizes (50 and 1000 watermark samples). A significant outcome is that all relevant results belonging to the same super-class are found by our system (Mean Average Precision of 100%), despite the cross-depicted nature of the motifs. This result has not been achieved in the literature so far.

Abstract:
Understanding natural scenes involves the contribution of bottom–up analysis and top–down modulatory processes. However, the interaction of these processes during the categorization of natural scenes is not well understood. In the current study, we approached this issue using ERPs and behavioral and computational data. We presented pictures of natural scenes and asked participants to categorize them in response to different questions (Is it an animal/vehicle? Is it indoors/outdoors? Are there one/two foreground elements?). ERPs for target scenes requiring a “yes” response began to differ from those of nontarget scenes, beginning at 250 msec from picture onset, and this ERP difference was unmodulated by the categorization questions. Earlier ERPs showed category-specific differences (e.g., between animals and vehicles), which were associated with the processing of scene statistics. From 180 msec after scene onset, these category-specific ERP differences were modulated by the categorization question that was asked. Categorization goals do not modulate only later stages associated with target/nontarget decision but also earlier perceptual stages, which are involved in the processing of scene statistics.

Abstract:
Purpose For digital libraries, it is useful to understand how users search in a collection. Investigating search patterns can help them to improve the user interface, collection management and search algorithms. However, search patterns may vary widely in different parts of a collection. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how to identify these search patterns within a well-curated historical newspaper collection using the existing metadata. Design/methodology/approach The authors analyzed search logs combined with metadata records describing the content of the collection, using this metadata to create subsets in the logs corresponding to different parts of the collection. Findings The study shows that faceted search is more prevalent than non-faceted search in terms of number of unique queries, time spent, clicks and downloads. Distinct search patterns are observed in different parts of the collection, corresponding to historical periods, geographical regions or subject matter. Originality/value First, this study provides deeper insights into search behavior at a fine granularity in a historical newspaper collection, by the inclusion of the metadata in the analysis. Second, it demonstrates how to use metadata categorization as a way to analyze distinct search patterns in a collection.

Abstract:
Abstract The establishment of a museum in the precinct of Ch'anggyŏnggung Palace in 1909 marked an important moment in the historiography of Korean art. Although recent studies have examined the founding, organization, and financing of the first Korean museum, the formation of its Buddhist art collection and its historical implications remain unexamined. Given that not a single Buddhist temple was allowed to exist within the capital city, the entry of these objects into the palace demonstrates a radical paradigm shift in the royal court's relation to Buddhist icons. The museum's Buddhist art collection reveals what was available in the art market of the time and what was considered worthy of being collected in a royal museum. Through close examination of Korea's first museum and its collection, this study traces the recontextualization of religious icons into art objects and the historical implications behind the category of “Buddhist statues.”

The study focuses on the relevance of categorization in the management of the quality of service of hotel enterprises. The main approaches to categorization of hotel business actors in the world and in Ukraine have been analyzed, attention has been paid to the need to define key concepts in the management of the quality of the placement service, the issues of standards and the current categorization process in Ukraine, the direction of their solution has been substantiated. The spatial organization of categorized hotel enterprises in Ukraine was analyzed, and the dependence of the share with the rating and structure of the star categories on the tourist attractiveness of the regions was determined. The international and Ukrainian hotel corporations, whose enterprises are all categorized in a high segment, have a significant influence on the categorization. Among the main issues of categorization in Ukraine are as follows: obsolete, not appropriate current requirements regarding the quality of the service of regulations, complicated procedure of categorization, absence of a legal mechanism of influence on hotel enterprises, which publicly declare a certain category without passing the categorization process, unequal regulatory requirements for the passage of categorization the subjects of the hotel business of different legal form, capacity, historical status of the building, not formed in the majority of investors, top management, hotel business, professional consciousness that needs to be taken globally. Abstract:
Experiments investigating the mechanisms involved in visual processing often fail to separate low-level encoding mechanisms from higher-level behaviorally relevant ones. Using an alternating dual-task event-related potential (ERP) experimental paradigm (animals or vehicles categorization) where targets of one task are intermixed among distractors of the other, we show that visual categorization of a natural scene involves different mechanisms with different time courses: a perceptual, task-independent mechanism, followed by a task-related, category-independent process. Although average ERP responses reflect the visual category of the stimulus shortly after visual processing has begun (e.g. 75-80 msec), this difference is not correlated with the subject's behavior until 150 msec poststimulus.

This research challenges the long-standing paradigm that considers compositional analysis to be the key to researching historical Islamic geometric patterns. Adopting a mathematical description shows that the historical focus on existing forms has left the relevant structural similarities between historical Islamic geometric patterns understudied. The research focused on the hexagonal-based Islamic geometric patterns and found that historical designs correlate to each other beyond just the formal dimension and that deep, morphological connections exist in the structures of historical singularities. Using historical evidence, this article identifies these connections and presents a categorization system that groups designs together based on their “morphogenetic” characteristics.

Abstract:
The following study is devoted to the phenomenon of unmanned aerial vehicles used throughout known history on the battlefield or for military purposes. The purpose of the following text is to familiarise the reader with an overview with the contemporary and historical employment of the unmanned vehicles on the battlefield. The study also aims to show that the concept of unmanned combat vehicles, also unmanned aerial combat vehicles, is far more ancient than is it is widely known. The article is based on theoretical research methods, mostly multinational academic literature. The author starts with an introduction on the role of limiting soldiers’ fatalities and the concept of removing military men from the battleground. Then, the author presents known examples of using unmanned ships in battles from Thucydides’ times to the invention of the Hell-burner of Antwerp. Further, the case of first unmanned combat aerial vehicle is presented, the bombing balloons from the nineteenth century, followed by a more contemporary study of the military use of unmanned aircrafts. The article is concluded with an analysis of the present employment of drones when they tend to substitute manned aircrafts on various occasions, especially when a mission is deemed “dull, dirty or dangerous”.

Abstract:
The present article aims to show that collective memories could serve as a criterion in social categorization. We predicted that a target person who shares common collective memories will be perceived as similar (to the self), relatively more favorably and categorized as an ingroup member. We conducted four studies using memories of historical events or childhood objects. These studies consistently showed that a target who shares common memories is more likely to be perceived as an ingroup member than someone who does not. This effect is mediated by perceived similarity to the self. Finally, individuals who share common memories are perceived more favorably than when they do not. However, according to the type of collective memories (historical events vs. childhood memories) sharing memories impacts either perceived competence or perceived warmth. The current sets of studies support the idea that collective memory influences social categorization processes, exemplifying its group identity-defining function.

Abstract:
Estimating characteristics of motor vehicles and their occupants based on sampling a small portion of vehicles on the road is inherently a statistical problem. The problem has two components: construction of an efficient sampling design and application of an appropriate estimator to collected data. Constructing the sampling design should involve optimal utilization of limited resources to maximize information collected. The selected estimator should provide the most precise and accurate estimate of the characteristic of interest. Four sampling designs and two estimators for determining the proportion of vehicles with a particular characteristic are compared. A simulation example comparing these designs and estimators is provided. The illustration is based on a hypothetical road network typical of the primary transportation system in a metropolitan area of 500,000 to 1 million persons. Some suggestions for choosing appropriate sampling designs and estimators for other vehicle categorization problems are provided.

Abstract:
Although a significant amount of work has been carried out for visual perception in the context of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), not so much has been done regarding auditory perception. The latter can complement the observation of the environment that surrounds a UAV by providing additional information that can be used to detect, classify, and localize audio sources of interest. Motivated by the usefulness of auditory perception for UAVs, we present a literature review that discusses the audio techniques and microphone configurations reported in the literature. A categorization of techniques is proposed based on the role a UAV plays in the auditory perception (is it the one being perceived or is it the perceiver?), as well as a set of objectives that are more popularly aimed to be accomplished in the current literature (detection, classification, and localization). This literature review aims to provide a concise landscape of the most relevant works on auditory perception in the context of UAVs to date and provides insights into future avenues of research as a guide to those who are beginning to work in this field.

It is argued that a combination of pre-production factors such as raw materials and technology breakthroughs, as well as post-production factors such as rise of East-Asian competitors will define the next market trend of EV batteries. Among the implications of this study, the competition between Korean, Chinese and Japanese battery suppliers is also explained.

Some aerodynamic issues affecting low-speed Urban Maglev vehicles are studied, focusing primarily on the effect of ambient winds on levitation electromagnet loads. Aerodynamic characteristics of a representative vehicle are estimated by means of wind tunnel tests of a 1/12th scale model. The wind environment influencing the existing Maglev guideway at Old Dominion University are established from historical data. It is shown that ambient winds, particularly crosswinds, can pose significant challenges, including substantial redistribution of levitation forces among vehicle electromagnets. The development of large lateral forces, particularly at the forward electromagnet stations, may also be of concern.

Abstract:
Social groups are a pervasive feature of human life. One factor that is often understudied in the literature on person perception and social categorization is language. Yet, someone's language (and accent) provides a tremendous amount of social information to a listener. Disciplines across the social and behavioral sciences—ranging from linguistics to anthropology to economics—have exposed the social significance of language. Less social psychological research has historically focused on language as a vehicle for social grouping. Yet, new approaches in psychology are reversing this trend. This article first reviews evidence, primarily from psycholinguistics, documenting how speech provides social information. Next it turns to developmental psychology, showing how young humans begin to see others’ language as conveying social group information. It then explores how the tendency to see language as a social cue has vast implications for people's psychological processes (e.g., psychological essentialism and trust) and also for society, including education and the law.

Abstract:
This study aimed to establish an vehicular emissions inventory to the Pelotas city, for the 2012 base year. An analysis of vehicular emissions was proposed to the CO, NOx and NMHC atmospheric pollutants, following the methodology proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The vehicle fleet data was obtained from the National Traffic Department (DENATRAN-RS), resumed in five vehicle categories (light vehicles, light commercial vehicles, trucks, motorcycle and bus). The categorization of fuel consumed (gasoline, alcohol, biofuel and diesel) follows distribution obtained from the National Agency of Vehicle Manufacturer (Anfavea) and emission factors have been corrected by the deterioration factor, according to the methodology proposed in the National Inventory of vehicle emissions. As evidenced in inventory results, automobiles (totaling 59% of Pelotas fleet) accounted for approximately 63% of the emission of CO and 72% of NMHC emissions. As expected, the heavy vehicles (trucks / buses) accounted for 76% of NOx emissions in the city. It was estimated that the fleet vehicle Pelotas emits 11,497 tonnes of CO, 3,727 tons of NOx and 2,280 tons of NMHC.

Abstract:
This paper deals with the historical development of the noise emission of cars, trucks and their petrol and diesel engines; it focus on the European Union and the time period between 1910 and 2020. Combustion engines were and are important noise sources of road vehicles. Until around 1970 engine noise levels were increased strongly by higher speeds, by higher cylinder pressures and especially for truck engines by the introduction of the diesel combustion process. The noise emission was mainly caused by the drive train until the 1960ies for cars and until the 1970ies for trucks. Since then the development of acoustically more advantageous engines was forced by noise regulations and simultaneously enabled by technical advancements. As a consequence of the acoustical optimization of the engines the tire/road noise became dominant. Despite of the technical advancements the road noise stress of the population is still much too high. Therefor the necessary short-term reduction of noise stress has to be realized by regulatory measures.

Abstract:
Because of their broad range of applications, electrochemical energy storage devices are the subject of a growing field of science and technology. Their unique features of high practical energy and power densities and low prices allow mobile and stationary applications. A large variety of electrochemical systems has been tailored for specific applications: Lithium-ion batteries for example have been optimized for mobile applications ranging from mobile phones to electric vehicles. On the other hand, sodium-sulphur accumulators – among others – have been developed for stationary applications to account for the capricious nature of renewable energies. Chemistry, physics and materials science have led to the optimization of existing cell-chemistries and the development of new concepts such as all-liquid or all-solid state batteries as well as high-energy density metal-air batteries. The aim of the BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Germany)-financed project "CryPhysConcept" is to develop new concepts for electrochemical energy storage applying a crystallographic approach. First, a categorization of the main solid components of batteries based on their underlying working principles is suggested. Second, an algorithm for the identification of suitable new materials and material combinations, based on economical, ecological and material properties as well as crystallographic parameters, is presented. Based on these results, new concepts using multi-valent metal ions are proposed. Theoretical as well as experimental results including an iron-ion approach are presented.

Abstract: The next paper tries to approach in a descriptive way the Military Historical Memory in Colombia so it can determine which will be its' conformation and establishes a possible categorization of the same by using critical in-depth and semi-structured interview analysis, getting to identify common places that could establish bounds and scopes both temporality and social space. In this sense, in first place, it made a conceptual and theorist approximation to the historical memory to introduce the memory levels. Later, in a second place, it made an analysis of the national and international legal tools of the Right to Memory and especially, it puts emphasis on the Military Forces Duty of Memory as a public organism. Abstract:
Close calls in aviation are frequent occurrences. Many reports have described encounters with unmanned aerial vehicles or conflicts due to increasingly congested airspace. The Aviation Safety Reporting System, developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, contains many close call narratives. However, few theoretical frameworks facilitate analyses of close call reports. This article describes an examination of close calls within the ASRS over a three-year period (2014-2016). The authors analyzed 117 close call reports from the ASRS involving near-midair collisions. Using Bliss’s (2013) taxonomy, the reports were successfully analyzed in terms of category and severity level. Results indicated that nearly half of the close calls occurred during the approach phase of flight. Also, a disproportionate number of close calls were “Un-signaled” and “Event-Driven.” Report frequency was negatively associated with aircraft separation distance. Recommendations include modification of the close call taxonomy to account for events caused by lack of responding.

Abstract:
This article analyzes approaches (philosophical, linguistic and historical) to the concept of “value” in the political discourse. When some critical events occur in the country or in the world, there is the transformation of axiological concepts. The article substantiates the point of view that the process of identification with a sociocultural community is clearly seen in modern political leaders. Based on philosophical and historical analysis, the authors disclose the transformation of the concept of “value”. In each language, one can trace the component of categorization and assessment of political reality. Modern problems of transforming society and ensuring its sustainable development lead to the evaluation of the value system. The application of various scientific methods (including theoretical analysis of the provisions of philosophical, historical, pedagogical, sociological, cultural science) made it possible to perform this study.

Abstract:
The presented proposal to approach expressive appellation from a cognitive and cultural perspective in historical terms is an attempt to perceive certain continuity and permanency by common perception and categorization of the world, and specifically - of another man. Apart from obvious, in this case, axiological bases, it is worth remembering about explicit stability of appellative foundations of expressive lexis that are cognitively conditioned and generally based on the fundamentals of common categorization. In this dimension, the stability of expressive lexis is the most visible indeed. In the case of cultural factors, we can talk about larger flexibility and susceptibility to changes, nevertheless, we cannot forget that transformations in this sphere are not too significant as they just concern a few cultural factors (aesthetic standards, a role and place of religion in social life, modern age changes) which have transformed in time.

Abstract:
Environmental problems such as air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions are caused by almost all transport modes. A potential solution to these problems could be electric mobility. Currently, efforts to increase the use of various types of electric vehicles are under way virtually worldwide. While in recent years a major focus was put on the electrification of passenger cars, electricity has already, for more than hundred years, been successfully used in some public transport modes such as tramways and metros. The core objective of this paper is to analyze the historical developments and the prospects of electric mobility in different transport modes and their potential contribution to the solution of the current environmental problems. With respect to the latter, we analyze the effect of the electricity generation mix on the environmental performance of electric vehicles. In addition, we document major policies implemented to promote various types of e-mobility. Our major conclusions are: (i) The policies implemented will have a major impact on the future development of electric mobility; (ii) The environmental benignity of electric vehicles depends to a large extent on the electricity generation mix.

Abstract:
This article is intended to build a procedure for imagery discourse analysis and to apply it to samples of a particular discourse – that of the Polish Solidarity movement. The main assumptions underlying this aim are: that the discourse of a certain historical period keeps its content regardless of the nature of its manifestation and can be traced by analysing the art of the period, and that images are texts and, thus, are subject to text/discourse analysis. To elaborate a research program and to see the categories of such analysis, the author adapts the qualitative research procedure of the Grounded Theory to the study of imagery discourse, combining it with the categories and procedures of the Causal-Genetic Theory. This approach proves that images carry information of two types – thematic and cortege information. The thematic content of an image represents the physical context of historical events, actualizing a certain fragment of reality. The cortege content of an image represents and actualizes the addresser – addressee interaction. In the proposed research program, both of the content/information types are under reconstruction. The whole procedure of imagery discourse analysis is presented as involving multistep categorization on different levels: categorization on the level of visual characteristics followed by categorization on the level of propositions, which in turn presupposes reconstruction of thematic and cortege propositions. Application of this procedure to the analysis of four pieces of art that represent the period of the Solidarity movement in Poland allows conclusions to be drawn about the primary categories of imagery discourse (colour, type of lines, characters and disposition) and their subcategories (opposition, universality, intertextual capacity, photographic accuracy, size and perspective). It also becomes possible to formulate some preliminary conclusions about the typical propositions of the discourse of the Solidarity movement.
