Abstract:
This essay examines the creation of a notorious anecdote about a Machiavellian mother — Caterina Sforza. The adjective "Machiavellian "functions on two levels: first, Sforza often simply appears in her role as mother in Machiavelli's works; second, her behavior in this particular instance might well be characterized as "practising duplicity in state craft. " Yet if one considers the pertinent historical documents and Machiavelli's very first, although virtually forgotten, version of the events, it becomes apparent that Machiavelli "de-Machiavellizes" Caterina Sforza. The historical record offers a narrative in which Sforza provides a localized, targeted political response to undermine her children's would-be assassins. Machiavelli, however, rewrites the episode by altering Sforza's quip to her enemies and adding the audacious gesture of lifting her skirts; as a result, he creates a version in which she no longer responds to the political predicament in which she finds herself. This essay juxtaposes Machiavelli's long-ignored first version of the tale with his other two more well-known prose versions and contextualizes all three in relation to contemporary sources.

Abstract:
In the early spring of 1608 a calamity befell the Gonzaga court at Mantua with the sudden death of their young virtuoso singer, Caterina Martinelli. And the shock felt at her untimely demise was made all the worse by the realisation that the court's prestige and the standing of Duke Vincenzo himself were thereby threatened. More precisely, what was at risk were the elaborate plans that the Mantuans had made – plans in which Caterina Martinelli had figured very prominently – for an extraordinary series of musical-theatrical events to be held later in that spring to which the whole world (or at least all of it that mattered) had been invited.

Abstract:
Gianfrancesco Pico’s interest in Caterina da Racconigi, a mystic and prophet revered in Piedmont in the first decades of the sixteenth century, was born out of a scientific curiosity prior to becoming devout admiration. The Compendio delle cose mirabili, Gianfrancesco’s last work, written after the completion of his Life of Savonarola, is a continuation of his treatises on prophecy and premonition and on the discernment of spirits and witchcraft; it aims to observe and describe the mystical phenomena attributed to a woman whose conduct is inspired by a specific model of holiness. The Compendio is therefore a composite text, part scientific treatise and part hagiography. This article examines the text in terms of hagiography by relating it to the model of Catherine of Siena and to the lives of the living saints that inspired Caterina da Racconigi’s own behaviour. It also explores the significance of the work within Gianfrancesco’s religious thought.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract New documents relating to Handel and one of his singers have come to light at The National Archives in London. In a legal dispute between Caterina Galli and two of her servants, the singer provides an outline of her earnings for the period 1744–48 which mentions the names not only of Handel, but also of Francesco Geminiani, Niccolo Pasquali, and a “Mr Glooc” (almost certainly, Christoph Willibald Gluck). From the documents we learn of the singer's alleged extravagance and financial difficulties in London, her peripatetic lifestyle, and the probable reasons why she returned to the continent in 1754. They also add to our scant knowledge of singers' salaries and, in particular, record what Handel paid Galli for performing in his oratorios. The complainant's bill and interrogatories mention several significant patrons of the London music scene, and the defense's case is supported by a series of signed depositions, including one from John Christopher Smith the elder, Handel's secretary, treasurer, and principal copyist. Galli's claims to have sung for Handel as early as 1744 are examined and largely dismissed; nevertheless, the fees she says she earned are credible because they accord with Smith's testimony and the little we know about singers' salaries in the 1740s and 1750s.
