Abstract:
This thesis is an investigation on how in architecture structure and material modulate the perception of light. This idea was implemented in the design of a catholic church for the parish of Blacksburg,Virginia. The vision of the church as a community in constant interaction resulted in the design of a complex, in which the chapel is accompanied by a pre-school and a third building containing facilities for the administration of the parish and the residence for the priest. The plaza on which all the buildings have been arranged allows the opportunity for outdoor activities, as well as the contemplation of the beautiful ever-changing views of the mountains that surround the church. The difference in the nature of the activities that take place in each one of the buildings has been expressed through the way structure and materials interact with the natural light producing a distinctive interior quality.

Architecture can influence or be influenced by its environment. Because this is so, buildings often reflect the beliefs, understandings, or prejudices of a society. Architecture can also help to shape society's understanding of the institutions it houses. The traditional forms of the Catholic Church in this country have followed society's expectations of this facility. To date, there have been few significant challenges to this image. Through the transformation of this historic and often inappropriate form, t he architecture can begin to influence both the Church's understanding of it self and its environs, and society's impression of this community. This thesis is an exploration into such a transformation . Through both research and design , the traditional image of the Church is evaluated and challenged. The search for a new image , one more appropriate to both t he original intentions of the Church and the modern environment s in which it operates , is attempted, and a preliminary design is proposed.

Abstract:
The Book of Exodus in the Old Testament recounts the liberation and salvation of an oppressed people and their subsequent journey to and arrival at the Promised Land. In the Christian Church, this journey continues in the lives of believers. The spiritual journey begins with salvation, continues with a repeated process of suffering and redemption, and terminates with an awakening to a better understanding of God.

The spiritual journey made concrete is the concern of this project. The Christian life, grossly simplified, is a passage from one place to another. The believer is constantly passing through the threshold from this life to the next, from an old, limited understanding of the divine to a new understanding.

In the Catholic Church, this process of passage is ritualized in the journey of the believer to the church each Sunday. Upon entering the church building, the believer passes from the secular and mundane to the sacred and holy.

Where does the secular end and the sacred begin? How does one delimit a boundary between the two? How does one cross the threshold from the profane to the sacred? That is the focus of this project.

Abstract:
The following is a design for a new Catholic church for the Sts. Peter and Paul parish in rural 12 Mile, Kentucky. The existing church building is set into a hillside, mostly underground. It was originally intended to be the basement but had to be used as the church once funding ran low during construction. Through my design I wanted to create a space that would be both welcoming for the parishioners to gather each Sunday yet feel spiritual even when mass is not taking place. To achieve this I wanted to make a space used for nothing but the functions of the Liturgy, any circulation, bathrooms, mechanical services or even confessionals should not detract from the space. By using two massive double concrete walls that would encompass all of the non-essential functions of the church, the space between the walls was freed up to be used as the body of the church where nothing but the Liturgy of the Eucharist would take place.

Abstract:
The aim of this research is to analyze the imperial infrastructure and institutions developed by the Inca and Spaniards to control and administer the Piura Region through the major center of Piura La Vieja (or San Miguel de Piura). This study leads with two main questions: What were the functions of the institutional buildings at Piura La Vieja, and how did these functions change from the pre-Hispanic to Transitional Colonial periods? To answer these questions, I developed a methodology to concede the limited documentary sources and surviving archaeological evidence. The Spaniards established San Miguel de Piura in 1534 and according to early documentary sources, a Catholic church was built circa 1539, which operated until 1578. During the 2005, 2008 and 2011, field seasons at Piura La Vieja we identified and excavated a structure to the south of the central plaza, oriented from North-West to South-East. The structure was identified and recorded as the architectural remains of a church, including an atrium, main entrance, tower, outer wall, altar, and sacristy. This church was built over a pre-existing pre-Hispanic building which followed a different axial orientation. The church of San Miguel de Piura is significant in that it is the only surviving building of the first seven churches built in Peru before 1540.This article is organized in five parts: the first is dedicated to explore the pre-Hispanic Period (1800 a.C.-1532 d.C.), the second to the Spanish establishment of San Miguel de Piura, the third to the brief rise of San Miguel, the fourth to the collapse of the site. Finally, some preliminary conclusions and directions for further research are presented.
Esta investigación analiza la infraestructura e instituciones imperiales desarrolladas por los incas y españoles para controlar y administrar la región Piura mediante Piura La Vieja (o San Miguel de Piura). Dos preguntas son abordadas: ¿Cuáles fueron las funciones de las edificaciones institucionales? y ¿cómo sus funciones fueron cambiando desde los períodos prehispánico al Colonial Transicional? Para responderlas, combiné fuentes documentales y evidencias arqueológicas. Los españoles fundaron San Miguel en 1534 y, en 1539, una iglesia católica fue construida según fuentes documentales, la cual operó hasta 1578. Durante el trabajo de campo de 2005, 2008 y 2011, se excavó una edificación, construida sobre una prehispánica, localizada al sur de la plaza central, y se registraron componentes arquitectónicos de una iglesia: atrio, puerta principal, campanario o espadaña, muro perimétrico, altar y sacristía. La importancia de la iglesia radica en que es la única edificación sobreviviente de las siete iglesias tempranas construidas en el Perú antes de 1540. Este artículo es organizado en cinco partes: la primera está dedicada a explorar el período prehispánico (1800 a.C.-1532 d.C.); la segunda, al establecimiento hispano de San Miguel de Piura; la tercera y cuarta, al ascenso y colapso del sitio; finalmente, se presentan algunas conclusiones preliminares y futuras investigaciones son presentadas.

The city of Blacksburg, Virginia, has moved its boundaries farther and farther west of U.S.460. Though a large amount of commercial and residential architecture has accompanied this growth, there has been no sacred architecture to complement any of this secular construction. With this in mind, a rolling pasture along Price's Fork Road west of U.S.46O was chosen as the site for a new religious/community center for the residents of Blacksburg's expanding boundaries. The design scheme, for a Roman Catholic church, consists of a K fellowship hall, meditation garden, and sanctuary surrounded by a protective wall. This scheme responds to the traditions of the Church as well as the spiritual needs of the surrounding community.

Abstract:
What did it mean to be a Catholic elite in Protestant England? The relationship between the Protestant crown and its Catholic subjects may be examined fruitfully through a study of an individual and his world. This thesis examines this relationship through the example of Sir Thomas Tresham, who has often been seen as the archetypal Catholic loyalist. It is argued that the notion of Catholic loyalism must be reconfigured to account for the complexities inherent in the relationship between Catholics and the government. The duty to honour the monarch's authority was bound up with social and national sentiment, but it often accompanied criticisms of the practice of that authority, and the ways in which it encroached on personal experience. Intractable tensions lay behind expressions of loyalty, and this thesis travels in these undercurrents of cultural, social, religious, and political conflict to investigate the nuanced relationship between English Catholics and English society. Political resistance as classically understood - actions which directly opposed and undermined government policy - risks the exclusion of culture and identity, through which resistance was redefined. It is argued that Tresham's participation in elite activities became vehicles for resistance in the Catholic context. Book-collecting, reading, and the donation of books to an institutional library are framed as forms of resistance which countered the spirit of government legislation, and provided for the continuation of a robust tradition of Catholic scholarship on English soil. Through artistic and architectural projects, Tresham found ways to participate in elite culture which were not closed off to him, and in which Catholicism and gentility could sit side by side. These activities were also avenues for resistance, whereby the erection of stone testaments to Tresham's faith defied the government's attempts to redefine Englishness and gentility in Protestant terms, to the devastation of Catholicism. These artistic works combined piety, gentility, and resistance, and, together with Tresham's two Catholic libraries, they were to be his legacy.

O objeto de estudo da presente pesquisa configura-se através da arquitetura religiosa produzida por personagens do Movimento Moderno no Brasil: Oscar Niemeyer, Edgar Guimarães do Valle, Dominikus Böhm, Gottfried Böhm, Adolf Franz Heep, Edgar Oliveira Fonseca, Joaquim Guedes, Hans Broos, Antônio Carlos Farias Pedrosa, Jerônimo Bonilha Esteves, Israel Sancovski e Carlos Alberto Naves. Numa delimitação histórica, restringe-se ao período entre 1940 e 1970, fase de implementação, assimilação e consolidação dos princípios modernos no Brasil. Através do estudo e análise das capelas e igrejas escolhidas, a pesquisa desvenda as formas pelas quais o arquiteto entendeu o conceito luminoso, o problema de medidas e de proporções e como isso se refletiu nas expressões e linguagens que envolvem a arquitetura. Para isso, o trabalho analisa treze obras. Os programas representativos dessa arquitetura a serem estudados serão capelas e igrejas católicas.
The research focuses on modern religious architecture produced in Brazil, its history and its process of renewal throughout the twentieth century and the natural light as the protagonist of this space and the use of proportioning techniques in plastic composition of the churches as effective to mobilize human perception. The study object of this research is configured through religious architecture produced by Modern Movement in Brazil characters: Oscar Niemeyer, Edgar Guimarães Valle, Dominikus Böhm, Gottfried Böhm, Adolf Franz Heep, Edgar Oliveira Fonseca, Joaquim Guedes, Hans Broos, Antonio Carlos Farias Pedrosa, Jeronimo Bonilha Esteves, Israel Sancovski and Carlos Alberto Naves. In a historical definition, is limited to the period between 1940 and 1970, the implementation phase, assimilation and consolidation of modern principles in Brazil. Through the study and analysis of the chosen chapels and churches, the research reveals the ways in which the architect got the bright idea, the problem of measurements and proportions and how it was reflected in the expressions and languages that involve architecture. For this, the paper analyzes thirteen works. Representative programs of this architecture to be studied will be chapels and Catholic churches.

Abstract:
A dispute between Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and Walter Kasper beginning in the 1960s reveals two competing worldviews within the contemporary Roman Catholic Church with regard to Catholic-Jewish relations: An ontological approach, represented by Ratzinger, which understands the truth to be eternal, unchanging and handed down from above, and a historicalphenomenological approach, represented by Kasper, which understands human experience as dynamically shaping conceptions of the truth. These competing worldviews hold further theological implications (anthropological, Christological, soteriological, ecclesiological, and missiological) in terms of how Catholics approach and understand their relationship with Judaism. This thesis will argue that because Kasper’s worldview is more open to the experience of the religious other, it has proved more beneficial to the Catholic-Jewish dialogue process and, therefore, represents a better articulation of the directives of Vatican II, which mandates all Catholics to renounce hatred and anti-Semitism and to engage in friendly dialogue and theological enquiry with Jews in order to “further mutual understanding and appreciation.” The thesis will further argue that the Catholic Church, on the whole, is trending toward the historicalphenomenological worldview and away from the ontological worldview, most noticeably in its relation with the Jews. The election of Pope Francis in 2013 is the best example of this trend as his magisterial teachings and publications thus far indicate that his worldview is more in line with Kasper’s historical-phenomenological approach than with Ratzinger’s ontological approach.

The design of the complex addresses Roman Catholic and pre-Christian legends, symbols, and signs. It transforms them based on our understandings of ourselves and our universe today. Saint Barbara is a Roman Catholic Church located on a suburban site in Chantilly, Virginia on the eastern coast of the United States of America. Chantilly was chosen because it has been victimized by a lack of comprehensive planning. The complex is composed of a bell tower, baptistry, Sunday school, sanctuary, outdoor funeral chapel, cemetery, and parking area. The church of Saint Barbara addresses the dichotomy of human existence as both spiritual and material being.

Abstract:
The thesis examines the coherence of the claim that Catholic education is both distinctive and inclusive. It clarifies the implications for church schools of a Catholic worldview and situates Catholic schools in the context of (and subjects them to scrutiny in the light of) alternative liberal philosophical perspectives in our society. Central questions explored are: what is the nature of, foundation for and implications of the claim that Catholic schools offer a distinctive approach to education? To what extent does the claim to distinctiveness entail exclusiveness or allow for inclusiveness? How far can distinctiveness and inclusiveness (in the context of Catholic education) be reconciled? An extended commentary on key Roman documents about Catholic education is provided. This is related to the particular context of Catholic schools in England and Wales, where an ambivalence in the purposes of Catholic schools is indicated and a way for them to avoid the ambivalence by being both distinctive and inclusive is suggested. The study works at the interface between Christian (and more specifically Catholic) theology, philosophical analysis and educational theory and practice with regard to the raison d'etre of Catholic schools. Through a retrieval and application of the notion of 'living tradition' it is shown that within Catholicism there are intellectual resources which enable Catholic schools to combine distinctiveness with inclusiveness, although there will be limits on the degree of inclusiveness possible. In the face of criticisms of their potentially inward-looking role in a pluralist society, it is argued that Catholic schools contribute to the common good. The argument should enhance clarity about purpose for Catholic educators in England and Wales. It also has implications for Catholic schools elsewhere and for other Christians and for people of other religions in the practice of their oit forms of faithbased education.

Abstract:
This thesis examines three major themes of Catholic education in Northern Ireland. Firstly, the thesis analyses the Catholic authorities' efforts to maintain clerical control of Catholic schools in Northern Ireland from 1921 to the Education (Northern Ireland) Order of October 1993, concentrating upon the events surrounding the major education laws of 1923,1925,1930,1947 and 1968, and the Orders - in - Council of 1989 and 1993. The thesis also estimates the financial and educational price paid by Northern Ireland's Catholics to maintain a network of autonomous denominational schools. Secondly, the thesis assesses the impact of the 'Gaelic' features of Catholic schools upon education policy, to determine whether national issues influenced the decisions of either the Catholic authorities or the devolved government. Thirdly, the thesis studies the Catholic authorities' response to the success of the campaign in recent decades for integrated schools, educating Catholic and Protestant children in 'shared schools'. The thesis relies upon five major sources; the records contained in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, the Catholic Church's archives for the Down and Connor diocese, the debates of the Northern Ireland and United Kingdom Parliaments, the newspapers reports of the Irish News and the Belfast Telegraph, and the Ministry of Education's Annual Reports
