Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 was envisioned as a way to improve society by helping to equalize educational opportunities for economically and educationally deprived school children. The law provided for students in nonpublic schools to receive services commensurate with those received by their public school counterparts.
This dissertation describes and analyzes the implementation of Title I of ESEA and amendments, in the Catholic Diocese of Richmond, Virginia, from April 1965 through December 1976. The implementation of Title I in diocesan schools resulted in a conflict between church and state. An historical study in church-state relations, this study provides documentation of the conflict and a view of the issues, events and results. Positions of some officials of the Richmond diocese, the Virginia Department of Education, the U.S. Office of Education, and the U.S. Catholic Conference are presented.
Three chronological phases of Title I implementation between April 1965 and December 1976 are identified. Efforts of diocesan officials to secure Title I services for children in schools of the diocese varied in concert with events and issues and the personalities of the leaders throughout the time frame. The study documents that the amounts of services parochial school children received were determined, to a large extent, by external factors not under the control of the Richmond diocesan staff. The issues involving the implementation of Title I (now Chapter I, ECIA) remain unresolved. The dissertation suggests the need for future study regarding the implementation of Title I for the period following December 1976. A number of general hypotheses about church and state relationships; about administrative processes in state, federal, and church bureaucracies; and about leadership emerged from the study. Previous issue date: 2015-06-16<br>Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos<br>Trying to understand a process through which individuals are raised in certain skills and dispositions, "physical and moral states" that are required by society as a whole, but also by specified groups to which one belongs, I conducted a research about the formation of Catholic priests process. I tried to understand from the experience of the diocese of São Carlos / SP, which dynamic, actors and situations were involved in this process of socialization, through which are cultivated in seminarians a number of provisions that in the future will contribute to the exercise of their priestly ministry. This set of provisions that I call priestly habitus is unconsciously and sometimes deliberately instrumentalized by these social actors, both in the daily performance of their social roles and in the maintenance activity or achievement of social positions in the Catholic Church or even in other fields such as the academic one. The dynamics of such priestly habitus cultivation takes place in a broad context, larger than the boundaries of a seminary, covering a range of training situations arranged through an institutionalized itinerary experiences that culminates in ordination. Such a priestly itinerary - equipped with native significance through a structured vocational speech that reduces the importance of profane motivations in the admission at the seminary provides the trajectories of these actors with a purity of inclination that omits the possibility of other interests (less transcendental ones). Finally, I discuss how to some members of the Catholic clergy, to be a priest not as regarded in the official speeches, but in the daily practices is less of an inescapable fixed identity than a contingency identification activity, which is evoked or omitted by these social actors according to the nature of relations at stake.<br>Procurando compreender um processo pelo qual se suscitam em indivíduos determinadas competências e disposições, "estados físicos e morais" requeridos pela sociedade como um todo, mas também a grupos determinados a que se pertence, realizei uma pesquisa acerca do processo de formação de sacerdotes católicos. Procurei entender a partir da experiência da Diocese de São Carlos/SP, quais dinâmicas, atores e conjunturas envolvem esse processo de socialização, por meio do qual se cultivam nos seminaristas uma série de disposições que futuramente contribuirão no exercício de seu ministério sacerdotal. A esse conjunto de disposições denomino habitus presbiteral, que é instrumentalizado inconscientemente e às vezes deliberadamente por esses atores sociais, tanto na performance diária de seus papeis sociais, quanto na atividade de manutenção e conquista de posições sociais no campo eclesial e até mesmo em outros campos, como o acadêmico. A dinâmica de cultivo de tal habitus sacerdotal se dá num contexto amplo, maior do que as fronteiras da casa de formação ou seminário, abrangendo todo um conjunto de situações formativas organizadas por meio de um itinerário institucionalizado de experiências que culmina na ordenação, o itinerário presbiteral, as quais são ainda dotadas de uma significação nativa, por meio de um discurso vocacional estruturado, que disassocia as motivações profanas do ingresso no seminário, dotando as trajetórias desses atores de uma pureza de inclinação que omite a possibilidade de interesses outros, menos transcendentais. Por fim, abordo ainda como para alguns membros do clero católico, ser padre, não no que toca os discursos oficiais, mas no que tange as práticas cotidianas, parece ser menos uma identidade fixa inescapável, do que uma atividade de identificação contingencial, que é evocada ou omitida por esses sujeitos de acordo com a natureza da relação social em jogo.

The Church is involved in the creative and saving mission of God. This ecclesiological perspective was deepened and assumed in the Second Vatican Council. This research portrays a reading of the missionary nature of the Church in the Diocese of Coari. It points out three facets taken over and built during its fifty years of evangelization: ecclesiology, sociopastoral action and missionary life as evangelizing and pastoral reflection. The primary sources are the Dogmatic Constitution Lumen Gentium, the Pastoral Constitution Gaudium et Spes and the Ad Gentes Decree. The bibliographical sources, the texts of the Magisterium and the Tradition are based and help to indicate the perspectives of the mission of the Local Church and its inspirations for the communion of the People of God. The diocese is missionary and continues its construction. You always need to update your evangelizing action. Installed in the ambience of the traditional Amazonian culture, the presence of urban culture has a strong presence. O movimento interno da comunhão divina é transbordante de vida. O Povo de Deus é envolvido na missão criadora e salvadora de Deus. Essa perspectiva eclesiológica foi aprofundada e assumida no Concílio Vaticano II. Esta pesquisa retrata uma leitura da missionariedade da Igreja na Diocese de Coari. Aponta três facetas assumidas e construídas ao longo de seus cinquenta anos de evangelização: a eclesiologia, a ação sociopastoral e a missionariedade enquanto vivência evangelizadora e reflexão pastoral. As fontes primárias são a Constituição Dogmática Lumen Gentium, a Constituição Pastoral Gaudium et Spes e o Decreto Ad Gentes. As fontes bibliográficas, os textos do Magistério e da Tradição fundamentam e ajudam a indicar perspectivas da missão da Igreja Local e suas inspirações para a comunhão do Povo de Deus. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the effect that the Catholic Diocese of Aitape in the Sandaun Province of Papua New Guinea, and by implication, the Catholic Church, has had on the lives of women, as assessed by women of the Diocese themselves. Much research has been done into how women can be, and/or become, empowered through development project approaches and through the agency of development agencies and people. Many such projects have been relatively short lived and have also been sector specific. If such projects are seen to have an impact upon the lives of women, a long standing institution such as the Catholic Diocese of Aitape which has such a great influence on the lives of the people living within the Diocese could also be expected to have an impact upon the lives of women. Women reflecting upon their own lives and the lives of their mothers and grandmothers and what differences there are and how the Diocese/Church has contributed to these changes has provided the data for analysis within this thesis. Based upon the reflections of women, selected as being representative of the women of the Diocese, the Diocese and the Catholic Church have indeed contributed to a degree of empowerment for women that these women may not have otherwise achieved within contemporary Papua New Guinea society. The various teaching, policies and practices of the Diocese and the Church have enabled a greater freedom of association, movement and opportunity for women to individually and collectively become empowered to some degree. The patriarchal nature of the Church hierarchy and the interaction between the Church and the Diocese however remains a barrier to true gender equality across all aspects of the Diocese and Church. While this remains so, increasing localisation of the Church within Melanesian society may well mean that gains made by women through the agency of the Catholic Diocese of Aitape, need to be defended from erosion by a more Melanesian version of that same Diocese. Daremos Ãnfase à educaÃÃo, cuja aÃÃo estava direcionada para a formaÃÃo de uma elite intelectual que defendesse os ideais desta instituiÃÃo. No final do sÃc. XIX, com a quebra do padroado e o advento de novas igrejas disputando o territÃrio brasileiro, a Igreja passa a preocupar-se com uma formaÃÃo mais conservadora, numa tentativa de barrar as manifestaÃÃes de um catolicismo popular que surgiam no Brasil. SeminÃrios e escolas foram criadas em todo o Brasil, com o objetivo de difundir a religiÃo catÃlica, no processo de romanizaÃÃo da educaÃÃo brasileira. Este trabalho tenta aliar as temÃticas sobre religiÃo e educaÃÃo, envolvendo as aÃÃes da Igreja CatÃlica acerca da CriaÃÃo da Diocese do Crato e do ColÃgio Diocesano para empreender o seu projeto que viabilizava a manutenÃÃo do seu poder. Com o objetivo central de analisar tal processo, buscou-se o entendimento do papel sociocultural desempenhado por esta instituiÃÃo de ensino na cidade do Crato. Ao longo de sua histÃria, Crato foi fortemente orientado pela religiÃo CatÃlica que marca sua presenÃa desde a chegada do Padre Ibiapina e suas instituiÃÃes de caridade. A atuaÃÃo da Igreja CatÃlica no Crato reflete na formaÃÃo de intelectuais que defenderam esta instituiÃÃo em vÃrias frentes, a exemplo da disputa para sediar a diocese contra o Padre CÃcero do Juazeiro. Com efeito, o estudo da religiÃo e da histÃria da educaÃÃo no Cearà servirà de arcabouÃo teÃrico para reafirmar o poder desta InstituiÃÃo.<br>The Catholic Church, in the course of its history, intended and implemented projects that make feasible his maintenance in the power in all the social fields: political, economical, cultural and education. We will give emphasis to the education, which action is oriented for the formation of intellectual elite that was defending the ideals of this institution. In the end of the nineteenth century, with the break of the ecclesiastical patronage and the advent of new churches disputing the Brazilian territory, the Church starts to be concerned by a more conservative formation, attempting to stop the demonstrations of a popular Catholicism that were appearing in Brazil. Seminars and schools were created all over Brazil, with the catholic religion spreading goal, by means of the Brazilian education romanizing process. This work attempts to ally the themes about religion and education, dealing with the Catholic Church actions about the Creation of the Diocese in Crato and the Diocesan College in order to undertake the project that made feasible the maintenance of catholic power. The central objective is to analyze this process, aiming to understand the sociocultural role fulfilled by this educational institution in Crato city. Along his history, Crato was strongly orientated by the Catholic religion which imprints its presence since the Priest Ibiapina arrival and his charity institutions. The Catholic Church activity on Crato reflects the intellectualsâ formation that later defended this institution in several fronts, for instance the diocese host contest against Juazeiroâs Priest CÃcero. In fact, the study of the religion and history of education in the Cearà will serve as theoretical outline to reaffirm the power of Catholic Institution.

Thesis (DTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research study addresses the assessment of the role of the Roman Catholic Church in addressing poverty within the Diocese of Lindi in Southern Tanzania. The study is interested in assessing whether the Roman Catholic Church in the Diocese of Lindi is fulfilling its mandated role of diakonia – the ministry of service, philanthropy (initiatives for communal good focusing on excellence of human life), and Christian love to ones neighbor and its role, commitment and application within the Diocese. In addition, this research will focus on the assessment of the fulfillment of the diocese‟s diaconal role of empowering the rural poor to “develop their capacity and skills so that they become competent decision makers with their confidence to act on their choices” (Roy and Hartigan 2008:67).
In this study, efforts are made to study poverty from the reality experienced by the poor in the Diocese of Lindi. The component themes in this research study are:
- The research design of this study and the literature review; relative to Diakonia; Catholic Social Teaching of the Roman Catholic Church; and Bryant Myers‟ framework for Transformational Development.
- The experience of poverty, diakonia, Catholic social teaching and transformational development by the respondents, with specific reference to the selected parishes in the Diocese of Lindi.
- A reflection of the reality of poverty from what emerged in literature with empirical qualitative research that is conducted among the poor.
- This research study suggests a model of Diakonia, which is contextual, relevant and liberating. Focusing on the Scriptures, the social teachings of the Church, the literature and listening to the poor during interview process, this research proposes that the Diocese of Lindi implement a model consistence with Diakonia that takes the following seriously:
1. The role of the church is mandated to carry out as it ministers to the poor in deed and word, guided by Christian love, to enable the poor to lead a better life (Pieterse 2001:111). Also, an African worldview1, which focuses on communal and systemic approaches to life and its problems.
2. The Roman Catholic Church deals with social, economic and political issues (Zalot and Guevin 2008:46). Socio-economic and political dimensions of life, with the recognition that poverty is structural and if the problems of the poor are to be dealt with effectively, the socio-economic and political structures are also to be addressed and transformed.
3. The reflection of concern for seeking positive change in the whole of human life, socially and spiritually (Myers 1999:3, 14). The poor, as living human documents, should not only be read and interpreted, but also taken seriously and regarded as central to the process of community development. The poor are to play the central role in the transformation of society. They are to be involved in the “functional priesthood of all believers” (Stevenson-Moessner 2005:21). The local churches of the Diocese must take seriously the socio-economic and political structures that perpetuate poverty and other injustices in society. The proposed model of Diakonia described herein is offered as a contribution in the direction of community development.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie fokus op die evaluering van die rol van die Rooms-Katolieke Kerk in die aanspreek van armoede binne die Bisdom van Lindi in suidelike Tanzanië. Die studie is geïnteresseerd in die assessering van die rol van die Rooms-Katolieke Kerk in die bisdom van Lindi rakende haar mandaat om diakonia te vervul – die bediening van die naastediens, filantropie (inisiatiewe gefokus op die gemeenskaplike welheid ten opsigte van die uitnemendheid van die menslike lewe), en Christelike liefde in toewyding aan die naaste en die toepassing daarvan bine die Bisdom. Daarbenewens sal hierdie navorsing fokus op die assessering van die vervulling van die bisdom se diakonale rol ten opsigte van die bemagtiging van die landelike armes deur die ontwikkelling van hul kapasiteit en vaardighede sodat hulle bevoegde besluitnemers kan word wat met selfvertoue hul keuses uitoefen” (Roy en Hartigan 2008:67).
In hierdie studie, word pogings aangewend om warlike armoede soos ervaar deur die armes in die bisdom van Lindi te bestudeer. Die volgende toepaslike temas word in die navorsing behandel:

- Hierdie navorsing studie dui op'n model van Diakonaat, wat kontekstueel, relevant en bevrydend is.
Terwyl daar gefokus word op die Skrif, die sosiale leer van die Kerk, die literatuur en luister na die armes tydens die onderhoudsproses, wil hierdie navorsing voorstel dat die Bisdom van Lindi uitvoering gee aan 'n model in ooreenstemming met die Diakonaat deur die volgende ernsting te neem:
1. Die rol wat die kerk het as 'n mandaat om die armes in woord en daad te bedien aangedryf deur Christelike liefde,sodat die armes in staat gestel word om 'n beter lewe te lei (Pieterse 2001:111). Ook 'n Afrika-wêreldbeskouing, wat fokus op 'n kommunale en sistemiese benadering tot die lewe en sy probleme.
2. Die Rooms-Katolieke Kerk se werkswyse van die hantering van sosiale, ekonomiese en politieke kwessies (Zalot en Guevin 2008:46). Sosio-ekonomiese en politieke dimensies van die lewe, met die erkenning dat armoede struktureel is en om die problem van die armes doeltreffend te behandel moet die sosio-ekonomiese en politieke strukture ook aangespreek en getransformeer word.
3. Die weerspieëling van besorgdheid oor die nastreef van 'n positiewe verandering in die geheel van menslike lewe - sosiaal en geestelik (Myers 1999:3, 14). Die arme, as die lewende menslike dokumente, moet net nie gelees en geïnterpreter word nie, maar moet ook ernstig opgeneem word en beskou word as sentraal tot die proses van gemeenskapsontwikkeling. Die armes moet die sentrale rol speel in die transformasie van die samelewing. Hulle moet betrokke wees in die “funksionele priesterskap van alle gelowiges” (Stevenson-Moessner 2005:21).
Die plaaslike gemeentes van die Bisdom moet ernstig op te neem die sosio-ekonomiese en politieke strukture wat die armoede en die ander onreg in die samelewing laat voortbestaan. Die voorgestelde model van die Diakonia soos in die tesis beskryf, word as 'n bydrae aangebied met die ontwikkeling van die gemeeskap as uitkoms.

For this analysis, we considered social initiatives discussed, above all, from the Second Vatican Council, and with more vehemence, in Latin America, in the meetings of the Episcopal Conferences of Medellin, 1968, and Puebla, 1979.
Based on actions promoted by Don Jorge Marcos de Oliveira and Don Claudio Hummes, we have tried to go through important historical moments about the struggle of the workers of the region and the support offered by the Catholic Church, through its movements, in a period of economic recession, social problems, political repression and intolerance by the Brazilian State.
To understand this context, we get support on historical and critical reading about the period, documents that retains vestiges of that time, subject who lived their experiences that time and pastoral guidance documents from the Catholic Church
The Don Jorge Marcos de Oliveira and Don Claudio Hummes initiatives influenced the actions of the working class in ABC Paulista and participated in the process of reorganization of labor unions in the late 1970’s, resulting in big strike movements that, therefore, reflected in the process of political opening<br>O presente trabalho explora algumas das questões vivenciadas no âmbito da Diocese de Santo André, localizada na região, então, conhecida como o maior parque industrial da América Latina, no ABC Paulista, zona metropolitana do Estado de São Paulo, entre os anos de 1964 e 1980, período de Ditadura Civil-Militar no Brasil. Para esta análise, consideramos as iniciativas sociais discutidas, sobretudo, a partir do Concílio Vaticano II, e com mais veemência na América Latina, nos encontros das Conferências Episcopais de Medellín, em 1968 e Puebla, em 1979.
Partindo da atuação das figuras de Dom Jorge Marcos de Oliveira e Dom Cláudio Hummes, procuramos percorrer momentos históricos importantes para a luta dos trabalhadores da região e o apoio que a Igreja pode oferecer através de seus movimentos, num período de recessão econômica, problemas sociais, repressão e intolerância do Estado Brasileiro.
Para compreender este contexto, nos apoiamos na leitura histórica e crítica sobre o período, documentos que conservam resquícios desta época, em experiências de sujeitos que viveram este tempo e nos documentos de orientação pastoral da Igreja Católica.
As iniciativas de D. Jorge Marcos de Oliveira e Dom Claudio Hummes influenciaram a ação da classe operária no ABC Paulista e participaram do processo de reorganização sindical em fins da década de 1970, resultando nas grandes movimentações grevistas e que, consequentemente, refletiram no processo de abertura política

Previous issue date: 2011<br>The Catholic Church, in the course of its history, intended and implemented projects that make feasible his maintenance in the power in all the social fields: political, economical, cultural and education. We will give emphasis to the education, which action is oriented for the formation of intellectual elite that was defending the ideals of this institution. In the end of the nineteenth century, with the break of the ecclesiastical patronage and the advent of new churches disputing the Brazilian territory, the Church starts to be concerned by a more conservative formation, attempting to stop the demonstrations of a popular Catholicism that were appearing in Brazil. Seminars and schools were created all over Brazil, with the catholic religion spreading goal, by means of the Brazilian education romanizing process. This work attempts to ally the themes about religion and education, dealing with the Catholic Church actions about the Creation of the Diocese in Crato and the Diocesan College in order to undertake the project that made feasible the maintenance of catholic power. The central objective is to analyze this process, aiming to understand the sociocultural role fulfilled by this educational institution in Crato city. Along his history, Crato was strongly orientated by the Catholic religion which imprints its presence since the Priest Ibiapina arrival and his charity institutions. The Catholic Church activity on Crato reflects the intellectuals’ formation that later defended this institution in several fronts, for instance the diocese host contest against Juazeiro’s Priest Cícero. In fact, the study of the religion and history of education in the Ceará will serve as theoretical outline to reaffirm the power of Catholic Institution.<br>A Igreja Católica, no decorrer da sua história, pensou e implementou projetos que viabilizassem a sua manutenção no poder em todos os campos sociais: político, econômico, cultural e educacional. Daremos ênfase à educação, cuja ação estava direcionada para a formação de uma elite intelectual que defendesse os ideais desta instituição. No final do séc. XIX, com a quebra do padroado e o advento de novas igrejas disputando o território brasileiro, a Igreja passa a preocupar-se com uma formação mais conservadora, numa tentativa de barrar as manifestações de um catolicismo popular que surgiam no Brasil. Seminários e escolas foram criadas em todo o Brasil, com o objetivo de difundir a religião católica, no processo de romanização da educação brasileira. Este trabalho tenta aliar as temáticas sobre religião e educação, envolvendo as ações da Igreja Católica acerca da Criação da Diocese do Crato e do Colégio Diocesano para empreender o seu projeto que viabilizava a manutenção do seu poder. Com o objetivo central de analisar tal processo, buscou-se o entendimento do papel sociocultural desempenhado por esta instituição de ensino na cidade do Crato. Ao longo de sua história, Crato foi fortemente orientado pela religião Católica que marca sua presença desde a chegada do Padre Ibiapina e suas instituições de caridade. A atuação da Igreja Católica no Crato reflete na formação de intelectuais que defenderam esta instituição em várias frentes, a exemplo da disputa para sediar a diocese contra o Padre Cícero do Juazeiro. Com efeito, o estudo da religião e da história da educação no Ceará servirá de arcabouço teórico para reafirmar o poder desta Instituição.

O estudo procura fazer uma análise dos pressupostos que fundamentam o Projeto de Restauração Católica na Diocese de Caxias do Sul, no período de 1934 a 1952. Os dados sobre as linhas norteadoras e os princípios cristãos e filosóficos, seguidos pelos colégios confessionais pioneiros em Caxias do Sul, foram levantados junto aos arquivos das instituições: Colégio São José, Escola Nossa Senhora do Carmo e Seminário Nossa Senhora Aparecida, e também consulta aos arquivos do Círculo Operário Caxiense, instituição que procurou, por meio da educação informal, ministrar cursos aos trabalhadores. As bases desses pressupostos, que vêm explícitos nesta pesquisa do mestrado em Educação da Universidade de Caxias do Sul, na linha de História e Filosofia da Educação, remontam ao Concílio de Trento, que unificou a doutrina, a disciplina e a prática da Igreja Católica. O fim do regime do Padroado no Brasil, mais a vinda de imigrantes e de congregações religiosas européias para o Brasil, no fim do século XIX, permitiram que esse Projeto se consolidasse no Rio Grande do Sul. Os mecanismos adotados por essas instituições favoreceram a coexistência colaborativa com o Estado laico e difundiram a importância de relações harmoniosas entre capital e trabalho para alcançar o desenvolvimento e combater o comunismo. The data about guidelines and Christian and philosophical principles followed by pioneer confessional schools in the city of Caxias do Sul were collected at the archives of the following institutions: Colégio São José, Escola Nossa Senhora do Carmo and Seminário Nossa Senhora Aparecida. Data were also collected from the archives of Círculo Operário Caxiense, an institution that, through informal education, tried to provide some courses to workers. The basis for these assumptions, which are explicit in this research for the Master´s in Education at the University of Caxias do Sul, in the research line for Education History and Philosophy, go farther back to the Council of Trent, which unified the doctrine, discipline and practice of the Catholic Church. The end of the regime of Ecclesiastical Patronage in Brazil, along with the arrival of immigrant and religious congregations to the country in the end of the XIX century, allowed this Project to consolidate in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The mechanisms adopted by these institutions favored the collaborative coexistence with the lay State and helped spread the importance of harmonious relations between capital and work to reach development and fight communism. The conclusions reached by this study show that the construction of the educational proposal developed by the religious institutions, based on teaching quality, school environment and discipline, supplementary educational activities, and participation in social and religious activities contributed, on the one hand, for the political, social and cultural development of the city of Caxias do Sul and other cities and towns in the surrounding region known as Serra Gaúcha; and, on the other hand, contributed for the development of a communitarian, humane and fraternal spirit, which are peculiarities of Catholicism, and noticed in the populations in these regions.

The northern Iberian Bishopric of Calahorra was re-founded in 1045 by Garcia 111 of Navarre. Between that date and the death of its eighth post-restoration bishop in 1190 all or part of its diocesan territory changed hands seven times between the Kingdoms of Navarre, Leon-Castile/Castile, and Aragon, as they competed over the riojan frontier- zone on which it was located. The position of the diocese on such a volatile secular frontier had consistently profound, but also steadily changing, effects on its political and institutional development. In the initial phase of Calahorra's restoration, its bishop was enormously empowered by his central role in the consolidation of Navarre's southern and western frontiers, but was held back from establishing a centralized diocesan administration by the insecurities inherent in the borderland condition of his see. Following a change of political regime in the Rioja in 1076, the bishopric suffered the severe consequences of its total identification with a defeated secular power when its embryonic diocesan structures were comprehensively dismantled and its bishops subjected to a dominant and hostile crown that effectively undermined their diocesan authority. The debilitation of royal authority in the Rioja and the region's political marginalization between 1109 and 1134 provided the context for the emergence of the see's independent political stance and its notably autonomous and rapid development of a strong cathedral. When Leonese-Castilian regional dominance was forcefully reasserted between 1134 and 1157, the Bishops of Calahorra were able to put the forceful currents of canonical reform that emanated from an increasingly comprehensive and emphatically territorial secular ecclesiastical hierarchy to use in combining their centrality to the north-eastern border politics of the Crown of Leon-Castile with the independent pursuit of a specifically diocesan agenda. When Castile ceased serving Calahorra's territorial interests towards the end of the twelfth century, the see used the political leverage it gained by its inclusion in the Aragonese Metropolitanate of Tarragona to distance itself from Castilian politics, thus revealing its maturity as a frontier power in its own right.

L’Església catòlica baixmedieval, va aplicar la reforma que havia de regular la moral dels fidels centrant el seu control en les qüestions relatives a la moral sexual (segle XIV) a la diòcesi de Barcelona.
Aquesta tesi explica els mecanismes d’aquest control i recull el que visites pastorals i processos episcopals expliquen sobre l’intent de regular les formes d’unió de parella i conductes com l’adulteri, l’incest, la prostitució i molt particularment, el concubinat del clergat.
Sosté que, en posar en marxa aquests mecanismes de control, l’Església partia d’una posició de desconfiança, -o de temor-, envers la dona, que portà a un control ferri de la sexualitat dels feligresos en general i dels clergues en especial.
Els esforços de reforma dels costums morals van tenir èxit divers, que van abocar en una conseqüència, potser no conscientment volguda, però real: la definició d’una imatge de la dona perillosa, la bruixa, que calia combatre.<br>Medieval Catholic Church attempted to reform the moral of its members by focusing on aspects related to sexual morality in the 14th C in Barcelona.
This thesis explains the mechanisms of such control and compiles the information that pastoral visits and Episcopal trials provide about the attempts to regulate sexual relationship behaviors and conducts, such as: adultery, incest, prostitution and specially Clergy’s concubinage.
This thesis supports the statement that when these mechanisms for control were activated by the Catholic Church, they stemmed from distrust –or suspicion- towards women. Such position led to a fierce control of sexual behavior for all Catholic Church members and particularly the Clergy.
The efforts made to reform moral behavior had different effects on issues addressed. However, the real consequence –which might not have been deliberate- was the image definition of a dangerous woman, and fighting the Witch.

During this period, a Catholic movement inspired by Liberation Theology was developed in the city of Nova Iguaçu, which was easily spreaded alongside the poor people, against the will of the dictatorship and in defense of Human Rights. This movement had as central figure the bishop of that city: Dom Adriano Hypólito. The objective of this work is to analyze and discuss the ideas of this Catholic bishop with other authors and researchers who have dedicated themselves to the question of religiosity and social formation in Brazil, paying special attention to the issue of violence in the 1970s and 1980s, pointing out that the words of Dom Adriano can help in the understanding that Violence is linked to historical factors, misguided public policies and neglection. The sources of this work are from the diocesan newspaper of Nova Iguaçu called A Folha, interviews given by Dom Adriano, some articles of the period and two documentaries: Nova Iguaçu, the city of my eyes (2003) and Diocese of New Iguaçu: 50 years of mission (2013). In order to deal with my sources, I used the method of reading and analyzing Dom Adriano's speeches with works that refer to the social, spatial and ideological formations of the Catholic Church, Brazil and the Baixada Fluminense. An analysis was then made of the pastoral work of the Church of Nova Iguaçu in the 1970s and 1980s, when the bishop assumed a political position of resistance to the dictatorship and denunciations of the actions of the death squads in the region. The reason behind this work was produced lies in the proposal of discussing on the role of religiosity in brazilian society, since it is important to rediscuss a Church that, at a certain historical moment, has positioned Itself between the collectivity and individualism, sought to strengthen community ties and fought against the violence covered and often undertaken by the State<br>Durante a ditadura civil e militar no Brasil (1964-1985) ocorreu um agravamento da violência na Baixada Fluminense. Neste mesmo período desenvolveu-se na cidade de Nova Iguaçu um movimento católico inspirado pela Teologia da libertação, que se posicionava ao lado do povo pobre, contra as arbitrariedades da ditadura e em defesa dos Direitos Humanos. Este movimento teve como figura central o bispo dessa cidade: Dom Adriano Hypólito. Objetivo deste trabalho é analisar e discutir as ideias desse bispo católico com outros autores e pesquisadores que se dedicaram à questão da religiosidade e à formação social do Brasil, dando especial atenção à questão da violência na Baixada Fluminense nas décadas de 1970 e 1980, apontando que as palavras de Dom Adriano podem ajudar na compreensão de que a violência está vinculada a fatores históricos, políticas públicas equivocadas e descaso. Nous étudierons, pour appuyer nos analyses, les diocèses de Rennes, Autun et Fréjus-Toulon. Un glissement de la logique d’enclos à la dynamique de pôles centralisateurs sera appréhendé, parfois en tensions, par les acteurs d’Eglise, à la lumière de quatre enjeux structurant l’argumentation : le « biotope » (rural/urbain), la diversité communautaire, le militantisme et la question de l’identité (statuts des clercs, coresponsabilité, modalités de l’évangélisation, communautarisme…).L’histoire et la géographie sociale permettront de renouveler les problématiques de l’appartenance spatiale et religieuse en partant d’interrogations sur le territoire selon des indicateurs précis : réseaux de fidèles et des militants, apport des nouvelles communautés (effectifs, choix pastoraux, gouvernement), options épiscopales en faveur de tel territoire ou tel groupe ecclésial… Pour l’historien, l’espace peut être considéré comme un outil heuristique, dans lequel des changements d’échelle se sont imposés dans le temps court. En délimitant nos recherches (1980-2013), nous voulons nous attarder à l’intérieur d’espaces qui ne possèdent plus la relative homogénéité que l’histoire leur prêtait avant le XXème siècle.Nos recherches s’inscrivent dans une structure en trois parties. La première partie se veut avant tout contextuelle, à la lumière de la postmodernité et de la sécularisation qui modifient les modes d’appartenance à une religion déclarée par beaucoup en soins palliatifs. Nous analyserons les liens étroits entre le catholicisme et ses modes d’insertion territoriale (rural/urbain) à partir de nos diocèses de référence. Nous présenterons les dé/recompositions des formes de militantisme dans le diocèse de Rennes, terreau d’Action catholique de plus en plus stérile et laissant la place à une militance familialiste très urbaine.La seconde partie de la thèse abordera les enjeux de la gouvernance ecclésiale dans les trois diocèses d’étude. Nous étudierons, dans le temps court, l’évolution du « munus regendi » des évêques et des prêtres avec le croisement des générations, avec le principe de coresponsabilité et le développement différencié selon les diocèses du diaconat permanent et des laïcs en mission ecclésiale. Nous développerons tout particulièrement le cas toulonnais pour lequel peu d’études approfondies ont été réalisées.Enfin, la troisième partie mettra l’accent sur la problématique du développement croissant d’un catholicisme attestataire polarisé en quête de visibilité. Nous analyserons la genèse du Renouveau et sa trajectoire dans le diocèse de Rennes. Nous nous pencherons particulièrement sur la communauté de l’Emmanuel, sur sa promotion de la nouvelle évangélisation et l’intégralisme de ses modes pastoraux. Ensuite, fort d’une certaine fécondité sacerdotale et d’un dialogue chaotique avec Rome (Motu proprio en 1988 et 2007), la galaxie traditionaliste très hétéroclite reste le cadre de mutations contemporaines que nous étudierons dans les diocèses de Rennes et d’Autun. Enfin, nous changerons d’échelle en nous focalisant sur la ville-sanctuaire de Paray-le-Monial, pôle militant et laboratoire incubateur d’un « nouveau catholicisme », sur l’articulation entre les différents territoires (ville, sanctuaire, paroisse) et les acteurs en place<br>This thesis aims at analysing, in the contemporary world (1980-2013), the trajectory of catholicism, in the wake of microhistory, through the study of its actors, its territories and its communities, the modes of ecclesial government. We will highlight the paradox of the fabric of the local Church which expands and fragments, but also contracts and polarizes, forcing the Ordinary, in his government, to think of a paradigm shift: from the challenge of proximity to the one of unity, taking into account the plurality of communities and associated territories. To support our analyses, we will study the dioceses of Rennes, Autun and Frejus-Toulon. A shift from the logic of enclosures to the dynamics of a centralizing pole will be apprehended, sometimes in tension, by Church actors, in the light of four issues structuring the argument: « biotope » (rural/urban), community diversity, activism and the question of identity (status of clerics, co-responsibility, modalities of evangelization, communautarism...).History and social geography will enable us to renew the problems of spatial and religious belonging by starting from questions about the territory according to precise indicators: networks of the faithful and militants, the contribution of new communities (numbers, pastoral strategies, government), episcopal options in favour of a particular territory or ecclesial group... For the historian, space can be considered as a heuristic tool, in which changes of scale have been imposed in short time. By delimiting our research (1980-2013), we want to focus on the interior of aeras that no longer possess the relative homogeneity that history lent them before the 20th century.Our research are presented in a three-part structure. The first part is intended above all to be contextual, in the light of postmodernity and secularization, which modify the modes of belonging to a religion declared by many in palliative care. We will analyse the close links between Catholicism and its modes of territorial integration (rural/urban) from our dioceses of reference. We will present the recompositions of the forms of militancy in the diocese of Rennes, a breeding ground for Catholic Action that is increasingly sterile and leaving room for very urban familyist militancy.The second part of this thesis will address the issues of ecclesial governance in our three dioceses of study. We will study, in the short time, the evolution of the « munus regendi » of bishops and priests with the crossing of generations; with the principle of co-responsibility and the differentiated development according to the dioceses of the permanent diaconate and of the laity in ecclesial mission. We will particularly develop the Toulon case for which few in-depth studies have been carried out.Finally, the third part will focus on the problem of the growing development of a polarized Catholic witness in search of visibility. We will analyze the genesis of the Renewal and its trajectory in the diocese of Rennes. We will look particularly at the Emmanuel community, its promotion of the new evangelization and the fundamentalism of its pastoral modes. Then, with a certain priestly fruitfulness and a chaotic dialogue with Rome (Motu proprio in 1988 and 2007), the very heterogeneous traditionalist galaxy remains the framework of contemporary mutations that we will study in the dioceses of Rennes and Autun. The purpose of this research is to explore possible ways of making the Eucharistic celebration more meaningful to Catholics in Mutare diocese, Zimbabwe. The reason for this concern is that the Eucharist is the `source and summit' of the Christian life. Since inculturation is a possible means of achieving this aim of a meaningful celebration, it was found necessary in this study to examine how the Eucharist has been taught and inculturated in the Catholic Church over the years. From this It was discovered that inculturation was absent in the writings and catechesis of early Church authors and Fathers during the periods reviewed. Although an observation was made that it was indirectly implied in the Eucharistic prayers of the early Christians, it was only after a new `understanding of culture' emerged, following Vatican II, that permission was given by Rome to use local languages at Eucharistic celebrations.
In the course of this study, efforts were made to determine the elements that constitute Eucharistic inculturation in Mutare diocese. These include: symbolic gestures, local languages, proverbs, enthronement, local staple food, invocation of ancestors, and others. In an empirical study to find out the extent of inculturation that has taken place in Mutare diocese, questionnaires were sent to sixteen out of twenty-four parishes in the diocese. Oral interviews were also conducted for this purpose. After analyzing the responses from respondents and those interviewed, it was discovered that some areas of inculturation have been realized, though not fully. Two outstanding areas which have not yet been realized were found to be the use of local staple food and the invocation of ancestors. The conclusion was that inculturation is not fully implemented in Mutare diocese and this impacts negatively on the celebration of the Eucharist. Eucharistic inculturation is an achievable goal in Mutare diocese, however, provided there is intensive catechesis which takes into account Shona-rich cultural values, aided by active involvement of small Christian Communities and the support of the hierarchy.<br>Systematic Theology and Theological Ethics<br>M. The laxity and continuous apathy among some members of the Catholic Church of the
Masvingo Diocese in Zimbabwe towards the Sacrament of Confession prompted this study.
The claim of Zvaiwa (2009) that confession is disappearing while psychology is being used
more, as reflected in the title of his article ―Confession out, psychology in‖, motivated this
research. The objective of the study was therefore, to explore the practical therapeutic value
of the Sacrament of Confession among members of the Catholic Church in Masvingo
Diocese in Zimbabwe. A theoretical and qualitative life narrative study was done from within
a practical pastoral therapeutic perspective of practical theology. The sample of the empirical
study consisted of 30 priests and laypeople in the five deaneries. A lifeline and semistructured
interview instrument was used. A key finding of the study was that the Sacrament
of Confession was not threatened by psychological counselling or psychotherapy. Another
significant finding was that the Catholic Diocese of Masvingo was experiencing a
devaluation of the church‘s pastoral confessional practice among its priests and laypeople.
The study confirmed that the Sacrament of Confession has therapeutic value and spiritual
meaning in the Church. The Sacrament of Confession and psychological counselling or
psychotherapy were found to collaborate as therapeutic disciplines in pastoral therapy. A new
model of therapeutic counselling that embraces spiritual direction through psychological
counselling and reconciliation is proposed. It is rooted in cultural value; spirituality; private
confession followed by prayer and absolution; and change in existential life, to enhance the
pastoral role of the Sacrament of Confession in the Diocese of Masvingo, Zimbabwe. This
model has interdisciplinary elements borrowed from medical, pastoral, psychological and
social research fields. If adopted in the Diocese it would decrease the spiritual indifference

its implications in terms of levels of inclusion and participation of church members in the
Catholic Diocese of Masvingo. The background of the study is the 1994 African Synod that
suggests the ecclesiology of the mission of the ‘Church as family.’ The study helps the
Catholic Diocese of Masvingo to evaluate the implementation of the ideal of the mission of
the ‘Church as family’ and draw implications for nuclear, single parent, child-headed,
reconstituted and extended families within the church. The study explores Shorter’s culture
model to examine how cultural practices, symbols, values and belief systems can be used as
an analytic framework for the human dimension of the church. A qualitative research
methodology that involves 36 participants in semi-structured interviews, three focus group
discussions in urban, semi-urban and rural parishes and participant observation was used to
collect data from parishioners, priests and religious of the Catholic Diocese of Masvingo. The
study reveals that each family type contributes to Evangelisation as proclamation of the Good
News and inculturation differently thereby enriching the ideal of the mission of the ‘Church
as family.’ Furthermore, the study shows that guilds, associations and commissions help to
strengthen families through spiritual, psychological, social and economic support. Findings
also indicate that the Trinity is the theological foundation of the family and it finds
acceptance in African communal setup. Family types in Masvingo Diocese are analysed
using the notion of the Trinity to show that dignity, equality and respect among family types
can be used to strengthen the ideal of the mission of the ‘Church as family.’ At pastoral level,
economic, social and cultural obstacles to family ministry stand as a challenge to the full
implementation and realisation of the ideal of the mission of the ‘Church as family’. In the
light of the research, recommendations for mission strategies were suggested at different
levels that involve Diocesan administration, priests, religious, catechists and parish leaders.
Recommendations for further researches were also suggested for areas that seem to be
important yet outside the scope of this study. The theological, pastoral, and cultural issues
raised in this study combine to help the Catholic Diocese of Masvingo to become an

The study investigates the spirituality of the Congregation of the Companions of Saint Angela Merici a Catholic women religious community. This religious Congregation was founded in 1954 in the diocese of Johannesburg, to serve the needs of the indigenous people. The person who founded this Congregation was Bishop William Patrick Whelan aMI, with the encouragement and support of Father Jean Verot aMI. At first the Catholic Church was a settler Church taking care of the needs of the settlers. It is only later that the Catholic Church became a missionary Church, outreaching to indigenous people. It is in the 1950's when the Congregation of the Companions of Saint Angela was founded , during the apartheid time. The history and the spirituality of the Congregation of the Companions of Saint Angela Merici are looked at. The first members of the Congregation of the Companions of Saint Angela Merici were trained and guided by the Ursulines, of the Roman Union in Munsieville, Krugersdorp. Some of the elements of the spirituality of this women 's religious Congregation that are explored are mutual love, hospitality, prayer life and education. The Sisters of the religious Congregation looked to Saint Angela Merici, their foundress and model , an Italian Saint who lived in the sixteenth century , and learned from her spirituality. The Sisters living In the twentieth century look at how relevant Saint Angela Merici's spirituality is to them, and how they as black women, in townships, can live this spirituality. Interviews were conducted to get some information about the religious Congregation of the Companions of Saint Angela Merici. A questionnaire was send to two Sisters who belong to this religious Congregation of the Companions of Saint Angela Merici but only Sister Mary Modise CSA responded positively to being interviewed. Father Thomas O'Dea, a Missionary Oblate of Mary Immaculate gave some direct information that he remembered regarding this particular Congregation of the Companions of Saint Angela Merici. A final conclusion to be drawn from this study is that the Congregation of the Companions of Saint Angela Merici is faced with the challenge to inculturate some of the elements of this spirituality and re-Iook at their charism at some General Chapters. This thesis is an evaluation of the members of the missionary religious Congregation of the Holy Spirits' understanding of their mission to the poor in the Dioceses of Bethlehem and Durban in South Africa. The Congregation of the Holy Spirit was founded on 27th May, 1703, Feast of Pentecost. A group of poor clerical students knelt before the statue of the Black Virgin of Paris (Our Lady of Deliverance) in the Church of St. Etienne-des-Gres. Their friend and leader was Poullart des Places. This small group of young men consecrated themselves to the Holy Spirit so marking the foundation of the Congregation. In the year 1848 some forty missionaries of the Congregation of the Holy Heart of Mary founded by Francis Libermann in 1841 were integrated into the Congregation of the Holy Spirit. From its foundation, the mission of the Congregation has always been the "evangelization of the poor" (Luke 4:18). For the founders, the poor meant those who were oppressed and marginalized among whom were the poor students and slaves in the colonies. My particular concern, however, is to evaluate the members of the Holy Spirits' understanding of their mission to the poor in the Dioceses of Bethlehem and Durban in South Africa. How do Spiritans in these two dioceses understand or interpret "the poor" whom they serve? How does this contemporary South African Spiritan understanding of the poor match with that of the founders or constitution of the Congregation? My response to these questions is an affirmation. In the evaluation, we will discover that the poor in the dioceses of Bethlehem and Durban include those who are unemployed, HIV/AIDS patients, orphans, children and women who are abused, refugees / asylum seekers, street children and many others. In summary, it is noted that the poor are those who lack physical necessities, socially oppressed and spiritually poor. In faithfulness to the intuition of the founders, it is observed that Spiritans in both Bethlehem and Durban Dioceses are attempting to be at the service of the poor. They are serving the poor through the proclamation of the Word, administration of the Sacraments, visitation of people in their own homes, attending to those who are infected and affected by HIV/AIDS pandemic, promoting the values of the Kingdom of God through justice and peace ministries and finally, Spiritans are working among the refugees, prisoners and hostel dwellers. Looking at these Spiritan ministries, it is noted that their choices of works are in accordance with the vision of the founders a well as what is in the Spiritan Rule of Life or constitution. Spiritans in both Bethlehem and Durban perceive their vocation as being at the service of these people. However, as religious, there are other elements which should be taken into consideration, such as prayer, community life and missionary spirituality. These are essential elements in the life of the members of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit. In general, the interviews show a lack of community life among members of the Congregation. This lack of community life affects prayer life as well. gravitação de forças, de pretensões, de esforços e de oportunidades.
Este itinerário, do pensamento à realidade da diocese de Santarém, foi
conquistando feições em dois períodos, com consecuções distintas: o século XVI, na
esteira do Concílio de Trento, em que esta realidade foi planeada, mas não
concretizada; o século XX, sob a égide do Concílio Ecuménico Vaticano II, e com a
sua criação, a 16 de Julho de 1975, pela Bula Apostolicae Sedis Consuetudinem, do
Papa Paulo VI.

This dissertation titled The History of the Catholic Church in Lesotho 1862-1989 has
three chapters. The first chapter deals with the formation of the seventy-seven
missions in Lesotho, and the establishment of the four dioceses of Lesotho the
seventy-seven mission had all been formed during the period mentioned in the title,
and those formed after appear in the appendix.
The second chapter deals with the socio-political involvement of the Catholic Church
in Lesotho, this part deals with the authority of the bishop and the Church
government and again with the role of the bishop and his relationship to the Oblate
authority. In this part four bishops are taken to illustrate this point, and this covers the
period from 1930 to 1966. In short this deals with the internal affairs of the Church,
and its finances. And we go on to deal with the involvement of the Church in the
party politics which led to independence of the country.
The last chapter deals with the church under the indigenous clergy, which actually is
