Abstract:
The Jesuits or ‘The Society of Jesus’ holds a significant place in the wide area of church history. Mark Noll cites John Olin notes that the founding of the Jesuits was ‘the most powerful instrument of Catholic revival and resurgence in this era of religious crisis’.[1] In histories of Europe to the Reformation of the sixteenth century, the Jesuits appear with notable frequency. The Jesuits were the finest expression of the Catholic Reformation shortly after the Protestant reform began. The Society is attributed to its founder, Ignatius of Loyola. As a layman, Ignatius viewed Christendom in his context as a society under siege. It was Christian duty to therefore defend it. The Society was formed at a time that nationalism was growing and papal prestige was falling. As Christopher Hollis observed: ‘Long before the outbreak of the great Reformation there were signs that the unity of the Catholic Christendom was breaking up.’[2] The Jesuits, as a missionary movement at a critical period in the Roman Catholic Church, used creative strategies that later symbolised the strength of what would become the traditional Roman Catholic Church for a long time in history. The strategies involved included, but were not limited to: reviving and nurturing faith among Catholics, winning back those who had become Protestants, converting those who had not been baptised, training of the members for social service and missionary work and also establishing educational institutions.[1] Mark A. AbstractThis article surveys the diasporic life and legacy of the Ethiopian ecclesiastic Täsfa Ṣeyon. After examining his origins in the Christian kingdom of Ethiopia and the circumstances of his arrival in mid-sixteenth-century Rome, the article outlines his contributions to the evolving Latin Catholic understanding of Ethiopia. Täsfa Ṣeyon was a librarian, copyist, teacher, translator, author, and community leader, as well as a prominent adviser to European humanist scholars and Church authorities concerned with orientalist philologia sacra as it pertained to Ethiopian Orthodox (täwaḥedo) Christianity. As such, he was a key extra-European agent in the Tridentine project of Ethiopianist and Eastern Christian knowledge production. The article also surveys the complex modern legacy of Täsfa Ṣeyon's career, documenting his posthumous influence in the fields of Ethiopianist Semitic studies and Ethiopian vernacular historiography.

Abstract:
The article deals with a peculiar document that was found during a field research conducted by the team of the Ethio-SPARE project during the spring 2010 in church libraries of Gulo Mäkäda wäräda, north-east Təgray (historical ʿAgame). This document is a Gəʿəz text written during the 19th century and dedicated to the refutation of the Catholic doctrine. Because of its apparent historical significance, the text and its translation are presented here. Taking into consideration the literary form (discourse) of the work and the place where it was found (the area of the active Catholic preaching) we can assume that the text is a summary of the anti-Catholic argumentation, possibly used by the Orthodox priests, and a witness of the local attitude to the Catholic missionary activities. The treatise does not provide any hints to the political issues of the Catholic settlement in Ethiopia. However, it does highlight some elements of the discourse against Catholic faith in the context of the emergence of a strong religious Täwaḥǝәdo identity.

In this paper I analyse the reasons that lead Portugual to send a Jesuit Patriarch to Ethiopia. Such a mission represented a radical break from the tolerant attitude the Lusitans had been showing vis à vis this African Church; the embassies that for decades flowed between Ethiopia and Portugal were suddenly replaced by a one-way attempt of conversion that deeply affected Ethiopian Christian society for more than a century. This mission is placed at the crossroads of both a process of spiritualization that the Portuguese court, under the influence of the Jesuit fathers and the cardinal infantes, endured, and of the political stagnation of the Indian colonial project. But the Catholic Patriarchate would only come to the fore, I contend, at the outcome of the Bermudez affair. This episode, which has largely been underestimated by historiography, was crucial for pushing forward the King João III, the Pope and the Jesuits in the Patriarchal adventure.

Abstract:
The holiness of Kaleb Ǝlla Aṣbǝḥa in Portuguese baroque iconography reveals the trajectory of a major actor of the triumph of Christianity in the south of the Arabic peninsula. This Christian sovereign, who defeated the Jewish king of Ḥimyar, Ḏū Nuwās, in 525 CE, became one of the most popular figures of Catholic devotion in South America. Pedro Páez, a Spanish Jesuit who lived in Ethiopia at the beginning of the seventeenth century, mentions him in his História da Etiópia. Later, benefiting from the progressive recognition of the holiness of African saints, this iconographical subject was popularized by the Catholic Church, thus breaking with the figure of the other, that of Jew or Moor, that of the enemy. This pillar of the Ethiopian church, refashioned according to western criteria, was presented as a unifying element of the devotion of black people in Brazil and Portugal, among whom he acquired an increasing visibility. La sainteté de Kaleb Ǝlla Aṣbǝḥa dans l’iconographie baroque portugaise révèle le parcours d’une des figures du triomphe du christianisme dans le sud de la Péninsule arabique. Ce souverain chrétien, vainqueur en 525 du judaïsme ḥimyarite, représenté par Ḏū Nuwās, devînt une des figures les plus populaires de la dévotion catholique du Nouveau monde. Pedro Páez, un Jésuite espagnol ayant vécu en Éthiopie au début du XVIIème siècle, mentionne le souverain dans sa História da Etiópia. Puis, au-delà du cheminement de la reconnaissance sacrée de saints africains, ce thème iconographique fut popularisé par l’Église catholique, rompant ainsi avec la figure de l’autre, celle du Juif ou du Maure, celle de l’ennemi. Abstract:
Both the Chinese state and the Vatican have an interest in maintaining more regular control over local Catholic community life. Their interests partially converge in seeking a regularized process for selecting Catholic bishops in the officially recognized part of the Chinese Church. This overlapping of interests is the basis for the “provisional agreement” between the Vatican and China on the selection of bishops signed on September 22, 2018. The agreement fails to address the area where Sino-Vatican interests diverge, i.e., the status of the thirty-six “underground” bishops, recognized by the Vatican but not by the Chinese government. Meanwhile, grassroots Catholic communities in China are deeply embedded in local social structures and their leaders have long exercised a considerable degree of agency in managing local affairs and adapting Catholic practices to local culture. The interaction between local communities and the long-term development of the Chinese Catholic church will depend, on the one hand, on the complex cooperative and competitive arrangements between the Vatican and the Chinese state and, on the other hand, on the interaction between the agency of local communities and the forces of control from above.

Abstract:
A dispute between Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and Walter Kasper beginning in the 1960s reveals two competing worldviews within the contemporary Roman Catholic Church with regard to Catholic-Jewish relations: An ontological approach, represented by Ratzinger, which understands the truth to be eternal, unchanging and handed down from above, and a historicalphenomenological approach, represented by Kasper, which understands human experience as dynamically shaping conceptions of the truth. These competing worldviews hold further theological implications (anthropological, Christological, soteriological, ecclesiological, and missiological) in terms of how Catholics approach and understand their relationship with Judaism. This thesis will argue that because Kasper’s worldview is more open to the experience of the religious other, it has proved more beneficial to the Catholic-Jewish dialogue process and, therefore, represents a better articulation of the directives of Vatican II, which mandates all Catholics to renounce hatred and anti-Semitism and to engage in friendly dialogue and theological enquiry with Jews in order to “further mutual understanding and appreciation.” The thesis will further argue that the Catholic Church, on the whole, is trending toward the historicalphenomenological worldview and away from the ontological worldview, most noticeably in its relation with the Jews. The election of Pope Francis in 2013 is the best example of this trend as his magisterial teachings and publications thus far indicate that his worldview is more in line with Kasper’s historical-phenomenological approach than with Ratzinger’s ontological approach.

The design of the complex addresses Roman Catholic and pre-Christian legends, symbols, and signs. It transforms them based on our understandings of ourselves and our universe today. Saint Barbara is a Roman Catholic Church located on a suburban site in Chantilly, Virginia on the eastern coast of the United States of America. Chantilly was chosen because it has been victimized by a lack of comprehensive planning. The complex is composed of a bell tower, baptistry, Sunday school, sanctuary, outdoor funeral chapel, cemetery, and parking area. The church of Saint Barbara addresses the dichotomy of human existence as both spiritual and material being.

To, perhaps, determine ourselves in a different way according to the existing solutions ... to understand what a strong dynamic has gripped the world we live in, colored our attitudes with a different color, influenced our thoughts about life, its values, altruism, selflessness, charities. the desire to give up something special without thinking that we will get something in return. Transplantation of human organs and tissues for therapeutic purposes has been practiced since the middle of the last century. She started (of course, in a very primitive way) even in ancient India (even today one method of transplantation is called the "Indian method"), over the 16th century (1551). when the first free transplantation of a part of the nose was performed in Italy, in order to develop it into an irreplaceable medical procedure in order to save and prolong human life. Thousands of pages of professional literature, notes, polemical discussions, atypical medical articles, notes on the margins of read journals or books from philosophy, sociology, criminal literature ... about events of this kind, the representatives of the church also took their position. Understanding our view on this complex and very complicated issue requires that more attention be paid to certain solutions on the international scene, especially where there are certain permeations (some agreement but also differences). It's always good to hear a second opinion, because it puts you to think. That is why, in the considerations that follow, we have tried (somewhat more broadly) to answer some of the many and varied questions in which these touch, but often diverge, both from the point of view of the right regulations and from the point of view of medical and judicial practice. times from the perspective of some EU member states (Germany, Poland, presenting the position of the Catholic Church) on the one hand, and in the perspective of other moral, spiritual, cultural and other values - India and Iraq, on the other.
