The story of Christian missions among Native North American tribes continues to be fiercely debated both in the church and in the academy. I offer the following study of missionary-theologian Carl F. Starkloff, who has devoted the past 40 years of his life to these issues, as a particularly effective contemporary example of someone engaged in this encounter. On August 17, 1961, Pope John XXIII appealed to religious communities in the United States to send ten-percent of their personnel to assist the Church in Latin America. Thousands answered his call. This unprecedented effort drew four members of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon to the village of Tamshiyacu in the jungles of Peru from 1966 to 1973. The purpose of this thesis ls to examine the experience of the sisters within the context of the total missionary effort and the religious changes affecting the Catholic Church in the United States and Latin America during the 1960/s.

AbstractThis chapter focuses on the role of Russian institutions in Palestine before, during and after WWI. The task of the first Russian mission was the control over the distribution of Russian donations, supporting Orthodoxy against Catholic and Protestant proselytisation and organising pilgrimages. Being founded with both political and philanthropic aims, the Russian organisations in Palestine supported the local Orthodox Arab population. Along with the traditional colonial modes of “soft power” in Palestine and Greater Syria (acquiring land and organising schools), on the eve and during WWI more flexible trends appear, providing a dialogue and cooperation with both the Greek Patriarchate and the Arab party. After the revolution of 1917 the Russian presence in Palestine was reduced to a few institutions of the Russian Church Abroad, and lost its political significance.

Abstract:

This chapter explores the mission celebrations that developed in Southern California, among newly arrived Anglo settlers and tourists, and between the 1880s and World War I. It talks about mission writers who celebrated the Spanish Franciscans that were led by Junípero Serra and founded missions in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It also argues that the celebrations in the Midwest elevated Catholic missionaries to the status of regional and national founding fathers in ways that naturalized U.S. territorial expansion. The chapter mentions the Serra celebrations that contended with the recent history of violence in Southern California. It describes the war with Mexico and ongoing violence against Mexicans, as well as the murder and displacement of Native Americans.

This chapter opens with a broad survey of Christianity’s initial appearance in West Asia and the several papal-sponsored sending missions of a handful of friars that followed. It then moves to a more extended treatment of the first organized and subsidized effort by the Church to penetrate China with the gospel—the first Jesuit mission of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Particular attention is given to the conversionary efforts of Matteo Ricci, the conversion of Xu Guangqi, and European missionary attempts to convert rural people and villagers. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion of the homegrown variety of Christianity that survived during the period when Christianity was officially outlawed in China as a heterodox and “perverse sect.”

Chapter 5 takes a closer look at three of the most important sets of actors involved at a national level in defining the agenda for migrant integration in Ecuador: the Ecuadorian state (especially the Ministry of Foreign Relations and Plan Ecuador), the United Nations system (especially UNHCR and UNDP) in Ecuador, and the Catholic Church. By tracing the institutional development and interaction of these three sets of organizations, the chapter seeks to understand how the differing political incentives and institutional missions and structures of each component of the migration governance network have impeded or promoted human security and peacebuilding. The chapter identifies trust, mission, capacity, and transnational linkages as key factors influencing outcomes. Recognizing the importance of change over time, the chapter traces three distinct phases within the time frame of 2000–2017: Absence, Coordination, and Regression.

Abstract:

The first chapter is concerned with spelling out a theological context common to both a ‘theology for’ and a ‘theology of dialogue’, namely a Church called to witness to its faith. While the ‘new way’ of dialogue is sometimes understood as replacing traditional forms of missionary witness like proclamation, mission remains central to any account of Church and Christian faith. According to Vatican II, the Church is ‘missionary of its very nature’. These familiar words from Ad Gentes, the Council’s decree ‘on missionary activity’, lead to a discussion of the Roman Catholic contribution to the ecumenical consensus on mission which has coalesced around the Trinitarian theme of the Missio Dei. The typically Catholic principle of ‘inculturation’ or translation into new languages and cultural forms is a response to the Father’s work of sending the Word and the Spirit for the creation and redemption of the world, a work in which the Church is invited to participate.

Abstract:

This chapter analyses the broad conceptualization of mobility by Catholics. It explores the different understandings of migration for Protestants and Catholics, and highlights the specifically Catholic interpretations of mobility. A narrative of ‘exile’ is not dominant in Catholics’ writing on mobility; instead, the centrality of ‘mission’ in Catholic thinking becomes manifest. This changes the dynamic of how we should interpret mobile Catholics: not as isolated sufferers, but as militant defenders of their Church. Rather than victims escaping hardship, English Catholics went abroad with a mission and purpose. Moreover, the preference for ‘missionary’ over ‘exile’ indicates that Catholics did not understand physically leaving their country as breaking all ties with it in order to embrace the life of an isolated wanderer. On the contrary, expatriate Catholics were seen as active participants in an English Catholic community that did not have clearly defined geographical borders.

Abstract:

This chapter traces a number of different trajectories whereby a religion emanating from Western societies became, in the course of the twentieth century, a faith rooted in the soil of West African or Melanesian societies. Catholic missions before Vatican II were fearful of unleashing the vernacular Bible on the laity and relied instead on a tightly controlled network of schools to grow a Christian community from childhood upwards. Conversion came not through sudden movements of indigenous revival and initiative, but through the steady growth in the numbers of school rolls and hence of the baptized. Meanwhile, Protestant mission schools were even more conscious than their Catholic counterparts of the dangers of mere head knowledge or forms of adherence to the church that appeared to lack strong personal conviction. The real point of education was that it opened the door to read the Bible for oneself, in one's own language, and thus laid the individual soul open to the regenerating power of the Spirit. However, reading the scriptures in one's own language was enough to permit individual and corporate appropriations of the Christian message that radically challenged European preconceptions. As vernacular translations exposed the extent to which European Christianity had denuded the biblical text of its prophetic and miraculous elements, Africans and Melanesians who had unusual charismatic gifts or mana sometimes assumed the mantle of the prophets and challenged their missionary mentors to join their many indigenous converts in believing their mighty works.

The city of Córdoba, site of the 1969 social protests the Cordobazo, encapsulated perhaps more than anywhere else in the country what the military viewed as the subversive influences that threatened the country’s sovereignty and its natural traditions, its cultural identity. A radicalized youth culture, liberation currents within the Catholic Church, and a militant labor movement targeted by the left for recruitment of party activists, collectively threatened the city’s conservative, Catholic culture. The military, Catholic Church hierarchy, business and the Peronist labor bureaucracy all viewed Córdoba as locus of radical ideologies and leftist activism.

Chapter 5 examines the confusion in Catholic teachings regarding mission to the Jewish people. The chapter establishes various reasons for this confusion: lack of a consensual reading of St Paul on this matter; concern that Catholics show sensitivity to a long history of anti-Semitism; distancing of Catholic approaches from recent aggressive evangelical approaches to Judaism; and the recognition that destroying Jewish identity in conversion is unacceptable. On this basis, drawing on recent Vatican documents, it is argued that Hebrew Catholic communities are a witness to the non-eradication of Jewish identity while following Jesus. This view will be problematic for Catholics and Jews but is already grounded in the Church’s new and emerging position.

This chapter focuses on the contributions that Catholic international sisters make to the United States—to religious life, the Church, and the nation. Sisters identified their contributions along two lines—the benefits of diversity and the benefits of evangelization. The sisters responded that their presence and their cultures added a beneficial diversity to a wide variety of settings—to community, ministry, the Church, and the society more broadly. The chapter concludes with the point that there is a disjuncture between the sisters’ acceptance of diversity in the society and, to a degree, in the Church, but their nonacceptance of diversity in the charisms and lifestyles of religious life.
