Abstract:
During the 17th and 18th centuries, several ecclesiastical scholars who worked in Brazil, especially Jesuits, produced a series of writings of a moral, doctrinal or prescriptive nature - sermons, books of devotion, manuals for good death, manuals of confession, manuals for slave masters, synodal constitutions, spiritual regiments - which had as one of the main goals the care of the soul, highlighting the references to the Eucharist as a fundamental sacrament for the nourishment of Catholics’ spirit. In view of the importance that these edifying, instructive or prescriptive works had in the modern period and, especially, in colonial Brazil, to guide the souls and actions of the faithful towards a virtuous and morally good life, and the emphasis given to the Eucharist as appropriate food for the sustenance of souls and for the guarantee of good Catholic behavior, the purpose of the article will be to examine, in these writings, the main benefits of the body and blood of Jesus Christ for souls and how such benefits could be guaranteed by the faithful from the tropics.

Abstract:
Anglican moralist Kenneth Kirk is an early twentieth-century forerunner of Catholic revisionism. Kirk critiques the moral manuals and defends a historicist, biblically grounded virtue ethic forty years prior to Catholic figures like Bernard Häring. Kirk also utilizes inductive casuistry in analyzing concrete cases to the end of promoting Christian freedom and mature Christlike character. For these reasons his moral theology has historical and ecumenical importance.

AbstractIn the first decades of the XX century, the Brazilian educators seized a collection of ideas for themselves concerning educational renovation, which we have agreed to call New School. The ideas inspired by this New School, that is to say, the “escolanovistas” ideas, permeated by different strands of thought, have leaded the educational reform and the educational practice up to the 60s. In this reform programme, the publication of books was one of the main strategies to disclose values and knowledge aiming at complying with the teaching practice. From the middle of the 40s onwards, there was a renovation of the worries with the theoretical and practical aspects related to teachers’formation, having the pedagogical manuals undertaken the function of guide to the teacher. Some of their authors were “escolanovistas”, who belonged to the catholic group, such as Amaral Fontoura, author of the manual entitled Education Principles (Fundamentos da Educação), the first book of the Brazilian Library Didactic Collection (Coleção Biblioteca Didática Brasileira), signed by this author, which had great acceptance in the Teacher’s Formation Schools in the country. Keywords: Pedagogical Manuals. Abstract:
AbstractDrawing from personal experience or the preparation of aspiring pastors, some English authors sought to refine clerical job descriptions during the first century of religious reform. Although clerical advice manuals consistently demanded a morally upright life and suitable academic training, the pastor's ongoing spiritual formation assumed more importance. Handbooks written by authors as diverse as the "Puritan" Richard Bernard, the "establishment" pastor George Herbert, and the "papist" George Gilbert also outlined the use of several novel methods to deal with individuals who failed to respond to more traditional means of preaching and provision of the sacraments. A close reading of such manuals provides a window on competing visions of English clerical life before 1660.

Abstract:
AbstractLike the Eucharist, the Roman Catholic sacrament of penance, particularly the practice of frequent private confession, became an increasingly important element of lay religious devotion in early modern Catholic Europe. Historians often view this development as part of a larger clerical attempt to impose a somber and uniform institutional piety upon traditional forms of folk Catholicism. Through a close reading of early modern Spanish manuals of confession and related sources, this article argues that the relationship between confessor and penitent more closely resembled a complicated series of dialogues and negotiations than a unilaterally imposed religious settlement. While confession was conducted within a stable and hierarchically ordered framework, significant checks existed that limited the undue exercise of priestly power and gave agency and influence to laypeople.

Abstract:
This article analyzes and compares the 1943 and 1948 editions of the Camp Manual, which provides instructions for the camp commanders of the Youth Front, the Francoist equivalent of Mussolini’s Balilla and the Nazi Hitler-Jugend. In these manuals, the camp appears as a microcosm that reflects the organic structure and government practice of the Francoist State, including its biopolitical aspects: health, food storage, calorie consumption... The political culture that they transmit and its variants maintain an affinity with the normalization of the bodies of the campers: while the Phalangist subculture imposes strength, martiality and rectitude upon the bodies, the Catholic subculture imposes meekness and sinuous forms. The two editions of the manual also reflect the evolution of Franco’s regime. In the 1943 edition, the leaflet of the camp leader reflects the Fascistization of the State. The 1948 edition, on the other hand, stresses the legitimization of the encyclical Divini Illius Magistri or the imposition of a Christian pedagogy (principle of self-direction), and it speaks of the establishment of a Catholic State. This includes the concept of the culture of the participative subject, linked in turn to a new normalization of the bodies (greater distention, oblique lines), without this implying the disappearance of the traditional forms of control or the automatic movements (parades, formations), characteristic of the culture of the subject that gives unity to Francoism.

Abstract:
Mostly based on Belgian and French-language source material (such as hospital archives, medical ethics, Catholic nursing manuals, etc.), this article sheds light on the way that information around serious illnesses was managed in the late 19th and early 20th century. It is suggested that information-giving practices were largely defined by the paternalistic nature of pre-mid-20th century medicine and although these practices aimed to the same objective, their content varied greatly according to the medical professionals or caregivers involved (doctors, catholic nurses, priests). The patients’ and their families’ reactions are examined as well. With the ambition to better flesh out the history of the therapeutic relationship, we argue that the interactions between patients and the various actors of the medical world were in continuity with the broader social dynamics of the time.

Abstract:
The article offers an analysis of ethical concepts in Russian religious-didactic literature of the 17th century. The main sources are alphabets published in Moscow. There were two alphabets printed by Vasily Burtsov, and an alphabet by Karion Istomin, as well as “Azbuka s oratsiey” (Alphabet with Didactics), and the manuscript “Alfavititsy didaskala” (Small Alphabet of a Teacher). These alphabets can be considered as religious-didactic literature because in addition to grammar, these manuals included the narration “On the Letters” by Chernorizets Hrabar (Hrabar, the Black Robe Wearer), extensive religious-anthropological reasoning, prayers, the Credo, Decalogue (in the Alphabet by Karion Istomin only), the Beatitudes, and other texts which were presented in Catholic catechisms of that time, as well as in the “Profession of Faith” by Peter Mogila (he used the Catholic catechism in his “Profession”). The influence of Reformation ideas is obvious, too. Several works by Karion Istomin, the alphabet primarily, were written and illustrated under the influence of “Orbis sensualium pictus” by John Amos Comenius, the last bishop of the Unity of Brethen (Bohemian or Moravian Church). The content of these manuals (including visual content) allows us to conclude that their mass publication was induced by the disciplinary revolution that began after the end of the Smuta (the Time of Troubles) in Russia, which is associated with the House of the Romanovs coming to power. The creation of a new tsardom was impossible without new people whose education was based on religious ideas and regulations. Ethical concepts in these books were almost inseparable from religious regulations, which is explained by the doctrinal aims of primary education in Russia of the 17th century.

Abstract:
This paper proposes a literary journey through the manuals for soldiers written by Jesuits prior to the twentieth century. After briefly outlining the debut of these publications, at the hands of Antonio Possevino and of Thomas Sailly, who led the first permanent mission of military chaplains in Flanders, it will focus on three moments: the second half of the seventeenth century, when the wars of religion wound down and we find the first manuals where, alongside the desire to impose discipline on armies, a patriotic rhetoric begins to be heard; the middle years of the eighteenth century, before the French Revolution, when, after the establishment of barracks and permanent chaplaincies, even texts aimed at the Christian soldier transposed the vocabulary of the Droit des gens in; finally, the nineteenth century, when the Society was restored and undertook the religious conversion of the soldiery against the perils of the modern world. In Belgium, the birth of a liberal Catholic regime supported a patriotically-toned missionary effort from Jesuit chaplains. Later, the mystique of the nation would affect the majority of texts aimed at combatants and their chaplains during the Great War.

Abstract:
This article analyzes the influence of confessional manuals on Catholic priests who solicited sexual favors from parishioners during confession throughout colonial New Spain. It proposes that we think about centuries of sexual encounters between priests and parishioners through the concept of cross-generational abuse, which describes intersecting forms of priestly exploitation based on chronological age differentials, allegorical power relations based on the rhetoric of spiritual kinship, and priests’ own abilities to profess redemption years after conviction and thereby regain positions of authority over parishioners. The plurality of these forms of abuse move beyond the usual associations of cross-generational sex solely with the question of age. It opens up the category of cross-generational sex and enlarges its potential to be a topic for historical reflection.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the Summa Angelica de casibus conscientie written by Angelo da Chivasso (d. 1495), first printed in 1486. Angelo belonged to the Observantine branch of the Franciscan Order and was its vicar general four times. Having documented Angelo's life and career, the thesis centres on the construction and purpose of his Summa. It assesses its originality within the tradition of confession manuals and the reasons for its popularity. It argues that the structure is very clear because Angelo intended it for the use of simplices confessores, by which he probably meant priests who did not have a university degree. He arranged his material alphabetically and in the longer sections, paragraphs were numbered, making cross-referencing easy. He included a list of authorities and explained the manner of quoting from them. Not all these features were original, but together they helped to make the Summa popular. There are several noteworthy features of Angelo's Summa. The procedures described had been laid down in earlier manuals, including the need for more rigorous questions - ad status – relating to the profession of each penitent and where this might lead to sin. Angelo however diverged from some earlier authorities by warning about excessive rigour. Circumstances were to be taken into account, and where possible penitents to be given the benefit of the doubt. The number of copies of Angelo's Summa printed throughout Western Christendom during his lifetime and following his death are a tribute to its importance. The period of fame however, was short. Martin Luther was a particularly virulent critic of the Summa, and the Catholic Church changed the method of hearing confessions, making much of it redundant, though it survived for some centuries more as a work of reference for confessors.

The thesis studies a body of confessional manuals produced in the Chinese territory (and written in Chinese, with the help of local collaborators) by European missionaries during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties (about 1580-1780). Its objective is to examine the modifications that the normative (doctrine and liturgy) of the confession underwent during the process of adaptation to the cultural, spiritual and social circumstances of the Middle Empire, a process that we have called ""transcultural translation"". Specifically, it seeks to unravel the discursive strategies and resources of cultural adaptation to which the authors resorted in order to confront the penitential practices, already present in the Chinese thought in the moment of the arrival of the first European missionaries The thesis analyzes, in short, the diffusion of Christianity in the imperial China as an elaborate and complex evangelizing enterprise, an amalgam of political, religious and cultural interests and motivations.

Abstract:
The objective of this research is to analyse the teaching of embroidery and other works in textile production inside the educational system developed from the second half of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, directing particular attention to the confessional education of the schools of the Congregation Saint-Joseph of Chambéry. The present research analyses how needle crafts have a wide identificiation with women. These works have helped on the construction of an image of femininity, taking active part on the formation of the gender identity. The 19th century recognized the school as a privileged space for diffusion of these female traditions. To women, scholarity emerges with the important mission of forming the wife, the mother and, with it, found the ideals of the nation. On this educational project, the curriculum reserves one particularity, the exclusive education of needle works to schools of the female sex. We believe this particularity to be revealing proof of how needleworks were seen as the perfect instrument for the constructing of femininity, and, in confessional schools, as an inculcation vehicle for the reformative Christian values of ultramontanism.

The object of this work is to investigate the involvement of the Society of Jesus in work on behalf of Catholic restoration. The side view is delimited by the review on the activities of the Jesuits at the Manuel da Nobrega College, in Recife, in the period from 1917 to 1930, in an attempt to try understanding the role played by this institution and the nature of this restoration process. Therefore, the theoretical foundations that were directed our gaze, are especially those found in the concepts of social place of Michel De Certeau and habitus of Pierre Bourdieu. So the everyday issues were examined by the links with their historical context in order to decipher the social reality involving this practice, which made us deduce, during this paper, the Nobrega College as a place of production and reproduction of speeches, connected with the various social sectors, including and especially the political one, linked to a reality that did not seem to need a restoration, at least in the literal sense of the word.

Abstract:
This study questions whether it is possible and how the relationship is established between the Catholic Church and the network society, from the theory of Manuel Castells and an interdisciplinary reading. Proposes a double way, first focused on the individuals and then in the institution, in order to show that, contrary to what appears, the new society offers to the Church more possibilities and opportunities than challenges and threats. The network society supports the arises of a new Christian identity, based on the concept of Christian life as an ethos that encompasses all dimensions of human being; and a new model of institution, as a network, with the recovered of the structure and motivations experienced in the beginnings of Christianity and of the conceptual changes introduced by Vatican II.

Abstract:
The diploma thesis strives to map and analyze the pastoral care of people with disabilities in the Czech Republic, both theoretically and practically. The theoretical scope of the topic uses primarily scientific literature from the field of neurology, psychology and sociology. In this theoretical part, it does not ignore the social policy of the state, which should help these people. Great emphasis is also placed on biblical and ecclesiastical teachings. Professional literature from the field of special pedagogy and pastoral theology is used as well for analysing the practical aspects of the topic, but mainly it draws from the practical experience of respondents to the questionnaire created in the framework of this thesis. The first two chapters describe physical disabilities from the perspective of neurology and psychology. The third chapter analyses theoretically attitude of society and the state to this issue. The fourth and fifth chapters deal with the question of disability in terms of Bible and church documents. The next chapter maps the social activities and services of charities in the Czech Republic which are provided to people with physical and other types of disabilities. The seventh chapter analyses the practical approach and communication of these people, both by the majority of...

Abstract:
Through his Catholic upbringing and Jesuit education Joyce acquired an informal acquaintance with the philosophy and theology of St Thomas Aquinas. Although he rejected his Catholic faith, he remained committed to certain tenets of Aquinas’ philosophy, proclaiming that he was ‘steeled in the school of old Aquinas’. Aquinas inspired the aesthetic reflections which were his central concern in Portrait. One of Joyce’s main sources for Thomistic philosophy were the philosophical handbooks written by professors of philosophy at the historic Jesuit college at Stonyhurst in Lancashire in response to the papal encyclical Aeterni Patris promulgated by Pope Leo XIII in 1879 which encouraged a revival of interest in the philosophy and theology of Thomas Aquinas; these manuals were used in many courses at University College.

Abstract:
This chapter explores masculinity and material culture in the backstage space of the church basement, where devotional and ritual objects are under construction. It argues that manual labor is devotional labor and examines the relationship between masculinity, embodiment, and religious transmission. In the basement men learn to embody masculine values and skills, like craft, creativity, and dedication. Through painting saints and building the giglio men enact their devotion and commitment to the parish and achieve belonging and status in the feast community. In this homosocial space, men demonstrate proficiency in Catholic iconography and negotiate questions of materiality and sacred presence as they repair the broken bodies of saints. This chapter explores the relationship between homosociality, Catholic practice, joking, and camaraderie among lay men. As embodied ethnography, this chapter centers reflexivity by examining the positionality of the female ethnographer in the male space and gender in fieldwork.

Abstract:
This chapter combines two very different but intimately related texts. On the one hand, it reproduces three dalits, devotional poems by Tagalog natives praising the work of Catholic missionaries. On the other, it provides a questionnaire from an eighteenth-century confessional manual used by missionaries to administer the sacrament of Penance. Vicente L. Rafael argues that each text embodies a different attitude toward the written word in the religious life of the colonial Philippines. For the Tagalog authors of the dalits, the book becomes a magical talisman of sorts. For the missionaries, it provides the tactics of an intimate disciplinary strategy meant to alter the behavior of Filipino natives.

Abstract:
Jazz began as a story of the city in church and parades, a performance narrative countering that of the Lost Cause. A chorus of various instruments with vocal-like warmth, jazz offered moderate, relaxed tempos to which people could dance or march, even in a hot climate. Jazz rose from working class roots to popularity with the elite. Some jazz songs satirized issues in the city. Brass bands flourished in towns near New Orleans, and the bands often played funerals for prominent people and benevolent society members. Influential jazz and ragtime musicians included John Robichaux, Buddy Bolden, Paul Barbain, Kid Ory, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Manuel Perez, Lorenzo Tio, and James Brown Humphrey. A white redemption narrative also grew during this time. A large white-unity event happened in 1889 in the form of the funeral of Jefferson Davis, who died in New Orleans. African American funeral processions faced pushback from whites. In 1903, Pope Pius X banned bands from playing in church except in special circumstances. As Catholic churches fell into line, black Creole musicians from Catholic families played funerals in other churches as the burial tradition spread.

Lamas, Carmen E. "Félix Varela’s Hemispheric Interventions." In The Latino Continuum and the Nineteenth-Century Americas. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198871484.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter recovers the transnational and hemispheric interests and influences of the Catholic priest Félix Varela (1788–1853), who lived for almost thirty years in the US and was nicknamed the “Father of the Irish” during his lifetime. It challenges the fractured reading of Varela’s archive in the scholarly literature, where he is normally studied only as an influential Cuban philosopher, his impact on US history having passed almost without note, and fills this lacuna by illustrating the manner in which Varela played a key role in the Protestant-Catholic debates of the 1830s–1840s and in the secularization of the public school system of New York City. Varela’s religious-ethical works Cartas a Elpidio (1835, 1838) demonstrate how these debates facilitated the emergence of minority politics in the US and the important role of Latina/os to that emergence. Nowhere is this more evident than in Varela’s annotated translation of Thomas Jefferson’s Manual of Parliamentary Practice, which exhibits a hemispheric reach and significance. It was intended for Spanish-speaking residents of the US, for readers in the nascent republics of Latin America and in colonial Cuba. An examination of Varela’s US archive, beyond his supposed authorship of Jicoténcatl (1826), locates Varela, on a Latino Continuum that reveals these early Latina/o writers as cultural actors shaping the very foundation of US history while also engaging broader ideas in Latin American political and cultural life. It thereby fundamentally challenges contemporary scholars to rethink the still existing divides between American, Latin American, Cuban, and Latinx studies.

Full text
Abstract:
As an effect way to guarantee pipeline safety, pipeline integrity management (PIM) has been paid great attention in oil-gas pipeline industry. In this paper, a pipeline integrity assessment and management software (PIAMS) has been developed to make pipeline integrity management technique to be applied conveniently. PIAMS has been developed with four main modules: database management (DM), anticorrosion system evaluation (ASE), corroded defects evaluation (CDE), and risk assessment (RA). In ASE module, classification evaluation is used to evaluate coating integrity with holiday density, attenuation of inspection current and insulated resistivity coefficient, as well as cathodic protection efficiency with on/off potential in volts. In CDE module, three methods recommended respectively by ASME B31G-91, DNV RP-F101 and PCORRC are used to evaluate residual strength of corroded pipeline. Being the core of PIAMS, RA plays a crucial role in integrity management. According to significant characteristics, pipeline is sectioned into segments, each of which should be assessed with scoring system recommended by Pipeline Risk Management Manual. This paper describes the framework, database, functions and application of PIAMS.

Abstract:
As part of an ongoing pipeline technology program for BP Alaska, a 1 km, 48-inch diameter, X100 demonstration pipeline was constructed and operated for a period of two years. Artificial defects were introduced into one of the two test sections. These defects were intended to demonstrate that current assessment methods could be used to predict the behaviour of pipeline defects in a very high strength steel under realistic conditions including accelerated pressure cycling and a range of cathodic protection levels. The defects included in the trial were volumetric corrosion, mechanical damage, arc strikes and girth weld defects. The volumetric corrosion defects included both isolated defects and pairs of interacting defects. All the defects and details such as the girth welds were assessed for fatigue failure in addition to failure at the Maximum Operating Pressure. This paper describes the design of the defects for the trial. The defects were designed to be close to failure, so as to provide a realistic test of the predictive methods. Current methods were used including the Pipeline Defect Assessment Manual (PDAM) and ongoing work sponsored by PRCI.

Full text
Abstract:
OAO “GAZPROM” in collaboration with SNAM and Saipem have developed the first stage of the “Blue Stream” Project, which when completed will be unique for the world gas industry in terms of its parameters and route conditions. During this feasibility stage of the project the following new Research and development tasks were addressed: - deep water collapse problems (the depths reach 2150 m), including buckle propagation; - the problem of pipeline protection against an H2S environment (in the near bottom zone H2S concentration reaches more than 14 mg/1); - the problem of installing a reliable pipeline having a diameter of 610×31.8 mm at gas pressures of 25 Mpa while taking into account the subsea currents; - construction problems associated with the specified parameters. Solving such problems required an elaborate and complex set of design tasks and experiments with materials and construction conditions. Special requirements were developed for the pipes and fittings, external anti-corrosion coatings, and the cathodic protection of the pipeline. New procedural documents were developed for deep water pipelining that included: the calculation for determining the strength and stability of the offshore pipelines; an instruction manual for the onshore section of the pipeline designed to carry a gas pressure of 25 Mpa; the necessary software for thermal and hydraulic calculations for the gas pipeline under extremely high pressures.

Full text
Abstract:
The majority of Husky’s fiberglass pipelines in Canada have been used in upstream oil gathering systems to carry corrosive substances. When properly designed and installed, fiberglass pipelines can be maintenance-free (i.e., no requirements for corrosion inhibition and cathodic protection, etc.) However, similar to many other upstream producers, Husky has experienced frequent fiberglass pipeline failures. A pipeline risk assessment was conducted using a load-resistance methodology for the likelihood assessment. Major threats and resistance-to-failure attributes were identified. The significance of each threat and resistance attribute, such as type and grade of pipe, and construction methods (e.g., joining, backfill, and riser connection) were analyzed based on failure statistical correlations. The risk assessment concluded that the most significant threat is construction activity interfering with the existing fiberglass pipe zone embedment. The most important resistance attribute to a fiberglass pipeline failure is appropriate bedding, backfill and compaction, especially at tie-in points. Proper backfilling provides most resistance to ground settlement, frost-heaving, thaw-unstable soil, or pipe movement due to residual stress or thermal, and pressure shocks. A technical analysis to identify risk mitigation options with the support of fiberglass pipe supplier and distributors was conducted. To reduce the risk of fiberglass pipeline failures, a formal backfill review process was adopted; and a general pipeline tie-in/repair procedure checklist was developed and incorporated into the maintenance procedure manual to improve the workmanship quality. Proactive mitigation options were also investigated to prevent failures on high risk fiberglass pipelines.

Abstract:
<p>Bridges are subject to extreme corrosion attack due to the surrounding conditions. Chlorides in a maritime atmosphere, de-icing salts or Sulphur Dioxide in an industrial atmosphere cause high corrosion rates if mild steel is left unprotected.</p> <p>The paper shows the best corrosion protection for a long service life under all these conditions offered by a duplex-coating combining a thermally sprayed zinc-based layer with a fitting top-coat. It introduces the thermal spraying process and ist application on bridges, which can be performed in the plant or at the worksite, du r ing erection and for repair work.</p> <p>Thermal Spraying is a well-established process which has been in existence for more than a hundred years. It is used manually, semi-automated and fully automated. Thermal Spraying with zinc and zinc-alloys is a "cold" process having no influence on the microstructure of the coated steel. It refers to worldwide standards and norms, which assure the highest quality of material, work and coatings.</p> <p>Worldwide references on steel bridges are presented as well as the latest developments in research. Throughout this abstract, the results of an intensive study over a service life of more than 26 years of duplex systems for Offshore Wind Energy plants is shown.</p> <p>In conclusion, the presentation also offers a quick view to the application of thermal spraying on concrete bridge structures to protect the rebar by cathodic protection.</p>
